Laci and Matt talk about the 2002 college band-centered classic Drumline, a highly entertaining journey into the world of HBCU marching bands. Nick Cannon is either “great” (Laci) or “perfectly fine” (Matt) as Devon, whose me-first attitude doesn't quite gel with his teammates on the campus of Atlanta A&T. He is especially at odds with the band director Dr. Lee (Orlando Jones) and drum major Sean (Leonard Roberts). Will they figure it all out in time for the big showdown against the villainous Morris Brown University, whose razzle-dazzle tactics Dr. Lee disapproves of? It's a fun and sweet movie and, obviously, we're shipping Devon and Sean. Get Laila (Zoe Saldaña) out of here! In 2004, JC Chasez was undeterred by the disappointing sales of his first solo album, Schizophrenic. Instead, he was doing something he does quite well: looking into the future. JC conceptualized a brilliant multimedia production entitled The Story of Kate that he hoped to bring not just to fans' ears, but to stages, TV networks, and beyond. While working with Justin Timberlake, Jimmy Harry, Dallas Austin, Timbaland, and more; JC coined the term "intelligent pop music" as he aspired to go beyond some of the shallow concepts that were topping the charts at the time without sacrificing any of the energy that went along with such music. So what happened? Why aren't we all spinning our Story of Kate vinyls right now? In this two part series-within-a-series, I will explore just that - as always, in depth. Growing up in his hometown of Atlanta, artist/producer Sol Messiah was inundated with the rich and energizing spirit of Hip Hop culture. Getting his start as a breakdancer, Sol Messiah built his reputation as a b-boy before traveling to NYC to join the legendary Rock Steady Crew. Inspired by New York Hip Hop legends, Sol Messiah fell in love with another foundational element of Hip Hop culture: DJing. Spending untold hours mastering the skill, and acquiring the musical knowledge required of the DJ, Sol Messiah was prepared to make the leap into producing records, the next step in his musical journey. A talented and skilled producer, Sol Messiah eventually linked up with Atlanta legend and veteran producer Dallas Austin. For years, Messiah would work alongside Dallas to create a deep catalog filled with timeless tracks for TLC, Madonna, Monica, Boyz II Men and more. At the same time, Messiah would continue to build his reputation as a DJ, securing several club residencies and gaining popularity and acclaim for his classic Sol Messiah Mixtape series. After separating with Austin in 1997 to pursue his own musical path independently, Sol Messiah spent years building an impressive catalog and further established himself as a go-to producer for a wide range of acts. Some of his most notable credits from this era include “Rain” and “Picture Perfect” from Chamillionaire's platinum album The Sound Of Revenge, Nappy Roots' “Roll Again”, David Banner's “Ridin'” featuring Talib Kweli & Dead Prez as well as Dead Prez's “Hell Yeah”, featuring Jay-Z. Soon, Sol Messiah would embark on a fruitful musical partnership with a fierce lyricist named Sa-Roc. Together, Sa-Roc and Messiah have released over a dozen projects thus far, including Sa-Roc's groundbreaking 2020 debut on Rhymesayers, The Sharecropper's Daughter. As a duo, Sa-Roc and Sol Messiah have amassed a global reach, touring internationally and rocking crowds across continents. They have performed at the legendary Jazz Cafe in London, performed live for BBC and have shared the stage with luminaries such as Common, The Roots and Jay Electronica. On his latest album, GOD CMPLX, Sol Messiah connects with some of the finest MCs in the game to create a collection of head-bopping Hip Hop music that's both innovative and inspiring. Featuring guest performances from KXNG Crooked, Sa-Roc, Evidence of Dilated Peoples, Locksmith, Stic.Man of Dead Prez, Che Noir, Lyric Jones, Mickey Factz, Cambatta, Planet Asia, TriState, Narubi Selah, Murs, Da BackWudz, Slug of Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, and Baba Zumbi of Zion I, GOD CMPLX is a powerful and engaging project. The album comes out swinging with the title track, “GOD CMPLX,” which features KXNG Crooked and Sa-Roc trading slick and fiery bars over an epic, grandiose beat. Showcasing the versatility of Sol Messiah's sound, “Limitless” finds Evidence getting busy over a dramatic, piano & string-infused track. From the brassy, drum-heavy sound of “The Hard Way” (feat. Che Noir, Sa-Roc & Lyric Jones) to the haunting vocal harmonies of “Sol Supreme” (feat. Cambatta), GOD CMPLX is not only full of bangers, it's also a diverse gallery of sounds that serves as a testament to Sol Messiah's skills as both a producer and a visionary. The journey that Sol Messiah began so many years ago, as a youth discovering Hip Hop in Atlanta, has no ending in sight. With his gifted ear and fierce dedication to Hip Hop culture, he continues to use his craft to build his own body of work as well as help maintain and elevate the culture of Hip Hop as a whole. Originally from Washington D.C., Attorney Lee Rankin now calls Memphis, TN her home. Lee is the proud visionary and creator of the boutique law firm, Lee Rankin Group, serving clients in music tech, virtual reality, social media influencers and legal marketing as it pertains to the metaverse. In this episode, you'll learn the how and the why Lee planted roots in Memphis wanting to fill the gap with black creators finding opportunities in the tech space. Lee shares how it all began with an Aunt who held executive leadership in Marketing at BET. This began her appetite for the entertainment space in addition to meeting her first child's father, Dallas Austin, as a freshman at Spelman College. Although the definition of an entertainment lawyer back in the early nineties consisted of being a white male, Lee pushed through and broke barriers to enter into this field. Her circle consisted of many celebrities as she climbed the ranks and learned the lay of the land. Lee provides much advice surrounding the process of reinventing yourself and having a strong team. She also shares the importance of financial literacy and quite a few women that have shaped her career.

Founder of Right Hand Music Group and Co-Founder of Keep Cool Records Courtney Stewart joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss representing Grammy-winning artists and popular R&B trends. Stewart joins host Carol Morgan on the Around Atlanta segment and shares the inspiration behind Right Hand Foundation. An Atlanta native, Stewart shared how proud he is to see “Hotlanta” grow through the years and expand into the thriving metro center it is today. With fond memories centered around the 1996 Olympics, Georgia Tech and Coca-Cola, Atlanta has grown into a unique city filled with diversity and economic growth in Stewart's eyes. “[Atlanta] has this flourishing sense of community going back to the Civil Rights Movement,” Stewart said. “The deep culture and roots that Atlanta has had made it such an incredible city. I'm proud to call Atlanta home.” Always a creative kid, Stewart attended North Atlanta High and participated in the performing arts program. Exposed to the early Atlanta music scene powered by Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri and Organized Noize, he was inspired by the early development of the Atlanta music community. This allowed Stewart to be a fly on the wall around groups such as OutKast, TLC and Goodie Mob, all under the banner of Organized Noize. Encouraged by the idea of having a platform to sign and develop artists that bring a left-of-center approach to the table, Stewart founded Right Hand Music Group in 2005 and currently represents Grammy-winning artist Khalid. Stewart shared that he has represented Khalid from day one, watching him directly connect with Gen Z through his powerful songs and relatable lyrics. “My experience being in the business for 15-plus years and his youthfulness and just God-given talent is a perfect combination to be able to balance one another,” Stewart said. On the Right Hand Music Group side, Stewart also represents London-born Sinead Harnett and Marco McKinnis, among others. Stewart and his team place great importance on discovering an artist early to put the necessary time and development behind their craft. In partnership with RCA Records, Keep Cool Records represents Normani, recent Grammy-winner Lucky Daye and many other flourishing artists. Taking the world by storm, TikTok is lighting a fire behind many popular R&B trends, acting as the epicenter of how artists and people connect, reconnect and stay in touch. What's hot from a trend standpoint is more than likely going to become popular on TikTok and follow a domino effect, influencing other social media platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and Facebook. “The more popular genres – pop music, rap music, R&B music – a lot of that is really coming from TikTok because those are the popular genres that a lot of the youth are listening to,” Stewart said. Launched on Stewart's birthday in 2015, Right Hand Foundation began when he organically connected with Stephanie Ford as she was assisting motels and extended stay hotels that were dealing with increased crime and drug activity. Stewart volunteered with Ford for a few months and was deeply affected by the people and stories he came across. Inspired, Stewart founded Right Hand Foundation to provide resources to aid individuals trying to get back on their feet. The foundation offers free housing for single mothers with children for one year in turnkey single-family units. The first Right Hand Foundation property is in historic College Park near Woodward Academy, supplying a sense of community and opportunity for adaptability to residents. While there, all individuals must participate in the program, taking advantage of counseling that touches on mental health, literacy, financial independence and more. “We prepare them for independent sustainability,” Stewart said. Right Hand Foundation maintains relationships with apartment complexes and housing developments, utilizing its connections to place program participants in permanent housing and ...

Welcome back to PART 2 on our Crazy, Sexy, Cool journey of TLC's 2nd album. In this episode, Angie (@poetrysoul3) and Steffi (@inn_mho) breakdown the era. Like in all our Diva Dailies episodes, we give context and explain where TLC was at in their careers and why they made the album. We then discuss the controversies that plagued the group during this time including their infamous bankruptcy, boyfriend troubles, and yes - the fire incident. Because this is an era breakdown, we also introduce some new segments to the podcast: Video Killed the Radio Star (sharing our favorite music videos from the era), The Mic Is On (discussing the live performances from the era), and But We Need the Audience to Buy the Album (exploring the different marketing strategies of the artist & what sets them a part from the rest). And yes, there are A LOT of receipts, WHITNEY.Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track. We hope you enjoyed our TLC “CrazySexyCool” journey!Album Info: CrazySexyCool is the second studio album by American girl group TLC. It was released on November 15, 1994, by LaFace and Arista Records. The album saw the group reunite with producers Dallas Austin, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Jermaine Dupri as well as new collaborators Organized Noize and Chucky Thompson, and also featured contributions from Sean "Puffy" Combs who helped with the notable hip hop soul sound. CrazySexyCool featured hip hop beats, funk, deep grooves, propulsive rhythms and smooth production. The album's lyrical content was seen as a departure from the group's debut and was seen as a coming-of-age project which explored themes such as sexuality, romanticism, inexperience, and youthful optimism.*Email us for show notes: divadailiespod@gmail.com*Twitter & Instagram: @divadailiespod*YouTube: Diva Dailies PodcastSTEFFI'S SOCIAL MEDIA:*Twitter & Instagram: @inn_mho*YouTube: innmyhumbleopinionANGIE'S SOCIAL MEDIA:*Twitter: @poetrysoul3*YouTube: Sleepy Nerd ProductionsTIME STAMPS:- Housekeeping (01:14)- Setting Up the Episode (03:10)- Pop Corn & Pop Stars (06:47)- Spill the Technicolor Tea (13:12)- Video Killed the Radio Star (38:40)- The Mic Is On (47:46)- But We Need the Audience to Buy the Album (56:06)- Show Me the Receipts (65:10)- Impact/ Closing Thoughts (68:42)- Preview Next Week's Episode (77:07)

B. Cox is joined by Charlee D. of the Word To The Mutha Podcast as they review TLC's debut album, 1992's Ooooooohhh...On The TLC Tip. After forming as a group in Atlanta in the early 90s under the tutelage of writer and producer Dallas Austin, TLC burst on to the scene as a combination of R&B and rap, similar to their contemporaries of Bell Biv Devoe. With three big singles, the group made up of T-Boz, Left Eye and Chili quickly found commercial and critical success. With their inventive fashion and quirky style supplemented by funky and hard hitting hip-hop beats with R&B tunes, they found a supportive audience that crossed over demographics. With songs that touched on topics such as independence, female empowerment and safe sex, they laid the foundation for a career that would make not only the most successful American female R&B group of the 1990s, but the most successful American female group of all-time -- period.Visit Charlee D and the Word To The Mutha Podcast!https://wordtothemutha.podbean.com/Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comJoin our Private Facebook Listener Group!https://www.facebook.com/groups/600256077743122Support The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAlbumism: TLC's Debut Album "Ooooooooh...On the TLC Tip" Turns 30 | Anniversary Retrospective https://albumism.com/features/tribute-celebrating-25-years-of-tlc-ooooooohhh-on-the-tlc-tipEssence: TLC Talks The Making of Their Debut Albumhttps://www.essence.com/entertainment/tlc-debut-album/The Quiet Us: Duplicitous Pop: Ooooooh On The TLC Tip 25 Years Onhttps://thequietus.com/articles/21771-ooooooohhh-on-the-tlc-tip-review-anniversaryPeauxetic Expressions: Oooooh...25 Years On The TLC Tip https://www.peauxeticexpressions.com/oooohhh-25-years-tlc-tip/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
