Jay talks the last few weeks of the NFL season, MVP race, and the first year of the NCAA 12 team playoff.
Bomani Jones is joined by Nate Tice, of Yahoo Sports, to discuss all things NFL. Bomani catches up with Nate, the pair discuss the current state of weather between NYC and Las Vegas, and realize just how old they are with this conversation. (0:35) That inevitably leads to a discussion about cold weather football and how smaller players, especially quarterbacks, are not built for the cold vs bigger guys. From there, Bomani asks Nate to help him decide whether or not the Steelers are legitimately good this season. Nate breaks down their defense, offensive live, and admits that even with Russell Wilson as quarterback this team can make some noise in the playoffs. (7:51) After briefly touching on the Chargers and the Bills, the guys transition to Anthony Richardson's performance this past weekend. (16:22) They discuss why the Colts can't give up on him, which leads to a conversation about former big boy QB's like Daunte Culpepper and Donovan McNabb who have succeeded in the league. (33:35) Finally after reminiscing about Mike Vick's prime, Bomani ends the episode by asking Nate to speak praises about his Detroit Lions. (53:20) . . . [A summer vacation re-release of a fan favorite episode from January 2020!] It's a return to the gridiron, and a revealing behind-the-scenes look at the brash, but ultimately ill-fated United Football League of 2009-12 – with its only commissioner, Michael Huyghue (Behind the Line of Scrimmage: Inside the Front Office of the NFL). Formed in 2007 out of big-budget dreams to establish a national top-tier, Fall-season minor league pro football circuit by high-wattage investors like San Francisco investment banker Bill Hambrecht, Google executive Tim Armstrong and Dallas Mavericks owner/firebrand Mark Cuban (who later backed out, along with initially-rumored financier T. Boone Pickens) – the UFL was also conveniently timed to capitalize on fallout from any potential labor/owner strife prior to the 2011-12 NFL season, when the league's collective bargaining agreement with its players expired. The bet backfired when a correctly-anticipated owner lockout of players quickly ended in July of 2011, ensuring no regular season disruption or drama. Over the course of its history, five teams played in the league: the Las Vegas Locomotives, Hartford Colonials (originally the New York Sentinels), Omaha Nighthawks, Sacramento Mountain Lions (née California Redwoods), and Virginia Destroyers (successors to the Florida Tuskers). The Locomotives were historically the best of the franchises, winning two of the UFL's three championship games, and possessing an undefeated regular season record when the league suspended operations (ultimately for good) in mid-Fall 2012. Big-name NFL coaches like Jim Haslett, Jay Gruden, Dennis Green, Marty Schottenheimer, and Jim Fassel were featured attractions, as were recognizable pro talent like Simeon Rice, Josh McCown, Daunte Culpepper, and Jeff Garcia – to name just a few. Huyghue walks host Tim Hanlon through the numerous ups, frequent downs and multiple sideways' of the UFL's brief lifespan, including: how early-career front office experiences in the NFL (Lions, Jaguars), WLAF (Birmingham Fire), and NFL Players' Association uniquely prepared him to the UFL commissioner's role; league ownership's original intention to play as a Spring league; the allure of then-untapped pro markets like Omaha, Las Vegas Sacramento; and lessons learned that could have helped last year's AAF and this year's soon-to-launch XFL. + + + Support the show with Dollar Shave Club's “Ultimate Shave Starter Set” for just $5! + + + BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: "Behind the Line of Scrimmage: Inside the Front Office of the NFL" (2018) FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

In this episode of Vikings Daily Opener, Judd Zulgad and Tyler Forness discuss various topics related to the Minnesota Vikings. Judd Zulgad covers key storylines for the Vikings as they begin their Organized Team Activities. He discusses Brian Flores' task of making the Vikings' defense respectable, as well as the attendance of Danielle Hunter and Dalvin Cook at OTA practices. He also talks about competition at cornerback, with Byron Murphy Jr. playing the outside corner in base and inside nickel, and an open competition for the other two starting spots. Finally, Zulgad discusses Kevin O'Connell's work with his offense, including the expected departure of Cook and the move towards a running back by committee approach. Tyler Forness delves into the Vikings' draft haul rankings and the ongoing debate between Daunte Culpepper and Kirk Cousins as the best quarterback for the team. He also talks about a new rule that could potentially affect the Vikings' kick return game, and NFL owners' approval of flex-scheduling for Thursday Night Football. Furthermore, he discusses ESPN's Football Power Index projections for the Vikings, which gives them a 29% chance of winning the NFC North. Finally, Forness talks about Davante Adams' praise for Justin Jefferson. Adams called Jefferson the best wide receiver in the league outside of himself or the 1b. to his 1a. This praise from such a highly-regarded receiver could be a boost to Jefferson's confidence and a sign of his growing reputation around the league. Overall, this episode provides a comprehensive update on various aspects of the Minnesota Vikings' current status and future prospects. That's all for today's episode of the Vikings Daily Opener. In the latest episode of "The Real Forno Show", Tyler talks about the beginning of phase three of Organized Team Activities. He wonders what can we get from these practices and what he is most looking forward to seeing. However, the debate about who the best quarterback between Daunte Culpepper and Kirk Cousins was re-ignited by PFF's Sam Monson and Steve Palozzolo on an episode of the PFF NFL Podcast. It's a difficult conversation to have, but one that needs to happen. Who is better and why is it Culpepper? Luke Inman weighs in with a comparison of the two quarterbacks. According to Inman, Cousins has 18 more touchdowns, 800 more yards, 4 more 4th quarter comebacks, 36 less interceptions, 34 less fumbles, better QBR and has won 8 more games with a winning percentage of .582 compared to Culpepper's .475. In conclusion, based on Inman's comparison, Kirk Cousins is the better quarterback between the two. Will Ragatz, writer for Sports Illustrated, also agrees that the choice is clear and it's Culpepper. The reporters, analysts, and fans disagree. Who do think is the better QB? Whether it is new math or old math, we'll be looking at which Vikings quarterback is greater, but first… On tonight's episode of The Real Forno Show, we dive into two topics. Host Tyler Forness will give a brief overview of the late-round picks and what the future could be. The picks were: Rd 5 / pick 165 (22) Esezi Otomewo, Minnesota DE Rd 5 / pick 169 (26) Ty Chandler, North Carolina RB Rd 6 / pick 184 (5) Vederian Lowe, Illinois OT Rd 6 / pick 191 (12) Jalen Nailor, Michigan State WR Rd 7 / pick 277 (6) Nick Muse, South Carolina TE The other topic will be a tad more contentious. There was a major discussion over the weekend comparing Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks across eras and who is the most skilled. Who is the best Vikings quarterback? If Randy Moss was able to stay focused on football and football alone, would he currently be regarded as the greatest WR of all-time?

With the NFL Draft approaching, Tarlin and Mike return to explore the history of black quarterbacks taken in the first round over the years. We begin with a quick breakdown of the prospects for the 2021 draft with Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields among those at the top of the list. How does race intersect with the predraft hype and projections for Fields, Lawrence and others. From there we run it back through the history of black QBs taken in the first round and even share the story of one Willie “Mitts” Thrower who was the first black man to take a snap as QB in the NFL back in 1951. We talk about Doug Williams, Warren Moon and even Kordel Stewart, aka “Slash” as we look for lessons from the past and ways to learn from examples throughout the years. Whether it’s Michael Vick, Daunte Culpepper, or Donovan McNabb, we look to the past to help understand the present in an insightful jaunt down memory lane. We conclude with a particularly salient example of why giving black players a shot at the CEO position on the field makes all the difference If you love what you’re hearing, subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and visit us at RunningItBack.fm for more amazing lessons learned from the world of sports.

We kick off a new series we're calling 'What If' that will explore big headlines in sports and discuss how things would have changed if it would have gone differently. To start us off, we go back to 2006 and the NFL offseason. The Miami Dolphins were in search of a quarterback for head coach Nick Saban's team and they narrowed it down to Daunte Culpepper and Drew Brees. Both guys were dealing with injuries but the medical team in Miami determined Brees was a bigger risk and he ended up signing with the New Orleans Saints. Since that time both franchises have gone in completely opposite directions. Join us as we give you the background on Brees before that 2006 offseason, what happened since that decision, and then answer the What If scenario. Some of the things we'll get into: What happens to Nick Saban, Alabama, and college football? Who do the Saints settle on at QB? Does this change Sean Payton's legacy? What does the AFC East look like for the past 10+ years with Brady, Brees, Belichick and Saban? Hit us up on Twitter and Instgram if you have an opinion on what football would look like today with Brees in Miami instead of New Orleans. And visit us online for more: http://distantreplaypodcast.com
We continue the 5 Vikings series with paralympian Vikings fan Chuck Aoki, who plays wheelchair rugby and has two Olympic medals. He's a huge Vikings fan so he got together with Matthew Coller to talk about his story and his favorite Vikings players ever, including some greats like Daunte Culpepper and total surprises too.
0:00 Bill Belichick's girlfriend went to bat for Bill on Instagram. 12:54 More on Phillip Rivers' career and if his lack of Super Bowl appearances will hurt his Hall of Fame status. 28:21 The High Five: Patrick Mahomes practiced in a limited capacity today, Doug Pederson could be taking next year off from coaching, ticket prices for the AFC Championship hit a record high on the secondary market, and Daunte Culpepper and Zach Thomas tried to fight Nick Saban.
Do draft picks depreciate like cars? Zach Thomas and Daunte Culpepper both wanted to fight Nick Saban when he was coaching Dolphins. Magnificent 7 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2006, the Miami Dolphins had a shot at singing Drew Brees coming off a shoulder injury and released by the San Diego Chargers. On today's episode, we look at the career of the last player to have back-to-back fantasy QB 1 seasons, Daunte Culpepper. Culpepper once had the greatest fantasy QB numbers in history, but then took an unprecedented nosedive off of a cliff into irrelevancy. We breakdown the good, bad, and ugly of his career! Twitter: @ff_nostalgia | Instagram: @fantasyfootballnostalgia
We start this episode digging into the contract demands of Dalvin Cook and the apparent stalemate between he and the Vikings. With initial reports saying Dalvin Cook wants Christian McCaffrey money, Nick and Eric jump to outline what Dalvin brings to the table and what might be a reasonable contract for Dalvin based on his skillset, durability, and value added to date as measured by PFF WAR. This conversation pointed to the scheme being a driving force of the Vikings running success because Alexander Mattison's performance relative to Dalvin Cook's was very similar in 2019. After Eric suggested Rick Spielman should call Bill O'Brien to work out a trade for Deshaun Watson, we jumped into PFF's latest QB rankings to discuss the methodology and why Kirk Cousins fell to the middle of the pack after such a strong year in 2019. Nick reminded us that while Kirk graded brilliantly in 2019, his 2018 season was bad across the board and once you average his most recent seasons against his career average, the PFF rankings make a lot more sense. Our conversation then turned to Eric's article about QB salaries and the implications for the rest of your team. With scheme playing such a huge role in Kirk's success and with the Vikings losing Stefon Diggs, we expect regression from Kirk Cousins in 2020. To round out the show, we discussed Kirk's place as the most valuable Vikings player in the last decade before playing a fun game of "this or that" with Daunte Culpepper vs Kirk Cousins. The episode opens with a look at Daunte Culpepper's crazy stats, what made him so entertaining and why the Vikings didn't win more during his time.Matthew and Eric then discuss why the Vikings' offense was ahead of the curve last year and where they could repeat the good things they did as well as some possible areas for regression. Does Kirk Cousins have to be even better this year?Check out Matthew Coller's written work at PurpleInsider.substack.com
Mackey & Judd revisit a conversation that Judd and Declan had from last week. Assuming neither quarterback got injured, who was more likely to lead Minnesota a Super Bowl: Daunte Culpepper from 2005-12? Or Teddy Bridgewater from 2016-20?
Judd & Declan revisit the Vikings quarterback ranking from Purple Daily and Declan asks Judd what Vikings quarterback he would start a franchise over with an alternate reality? Declan has Daunte Culpepper and Judd takes Teddy Bridgewater.
Vent Line on SKOR North - for Vikings and Minnesota sports fans
Judd opens Vent Line with the idea that the Vikings should offer their two first-round picks (plus more if needed) to acquire Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson; (28:05) Where does Daunte Culpepper rank among all-time Vikings quarterbacks?; (48:00) Declan runs down the list of every quarterback that started for the Vikings since he was born in 1992.
Matthew Coller is joined by Sage Rosenfels, Eric Eager, and Judd Zulgad today to discuss a long term contract for Anthony Harris, the 2002 Vikings/Saints game, and Daunte Culpepper's legacy. Coller and Sage open the show discussing what a long term deal for Anthony Harris would mean for the Vikings (1:00). We close out the first hour making Sage recklessly speculate which current QB's will make the Hall of Fame (28:00). Hour Two kicks off with a Way Back Wednesday look at the 2002 game between the Vikings and Saints with PFF's Eric Eager (57:00). Judd Zulgad comes in to close out the show to chat about Daunte Culpepper's legacy (1:19:00).
On this episode of Fantasy Football Nostalgia, Haley and Kevin overview the career of one the most dominant fantasy players of all time, Megatron, Calvin Johnson. We look at his college years, the onslaught of mediocre quarterbacks who threw him the ball including John Kitna, Drew Stanton, Shaun Hill, and an aging Daunte Culpepper, and his record setting season in 2012!
In this episode, Eric Eager and Nick Olson join Jayson Brown to discuss COVID-19, draft strategies, positional learning curves, and rebuilding. To start the episode, Eric helps us to under the “drastic” or “extreme” response to COVID-19 in North America. Eric helps us to understand that the multiplicative nature of COVID-19’s infectiousness poses a great danger to the healthcare system. By practicing social distancing and improving cleanliness, we can flatten the curve which gives healthcare systems the ability to effectively treat people as needed Next up, Nick challenges the conventional wisdom that the Vikings should address their worst starters in the opening rounds of the draft. While Pat Elflein and Shamar Stephen are among the worst starters at their respective positions, getting better at cornerback, especially after Xavier Rhodes was released, and wide receiver will likely net us more wins overall. Eric builds on Nick’s point by pointing to recent work at Pro Football Focus by Mike Renner and Timo Riske letting us know why we should address needs in free agency and how learning curves can delay the returns when drafting talented players. Eric also reminds us that the best Vikings draft picks in recent memory weren’t needs based picks citing Randy Moss, Adrian Peterson, Robert Smith, and Daunte Culpepper. Nick Olson’s reasons for optimism in 2020 Coaching Kirk Cousins Young Stars Front Office Eric gives us a run down on his article in which he discusses year over year defensive performance and then talks about how the Vikings can apply those principles to field a strong defense in 2020. We kick off the new year with a return to the gridiron, and a revealing behind-the-scenes look at the brash, but ultimately ill-fated United Football League of 2009-12 – with its only commissioner, Michael Huyghue (Behind the Line of Scrimmage: Inside the Front Office of the NFL). Formed in 2007 out of big-budget dreams to establish a national top-tier, Fall-season minor league pro football circuit by high-wattage investors like San Francisco investment banker Bill Hambrecht, Google executive Tim Armstrong and Dallas Mavericks owner/firebrand Mark Cuban (who later backed out, along with initially-rumored financier T. Boone Pickens) – the UFL was also conveniently timed to capitalize on fallout from any potential labor/owner strife prior to the 2011-12 NFL season, when the league’s collective bargaining agreement with its players expired. The Locomotives were historically the best of the franchises, winning two of the UFL’s three championship games, and possessing an undefeated regular season record when the league suspended operations (ultimately for good) in mid-Fall 2012. Huyghue walks host Tim Hanlon through the numerous ups, frequent downs and multiple sideways’ of the UFL’s brief lifespan, including: how early-career front office experiences in the NFL (Lions, Jaguars), WLAF (Birmingham Fire), and NFL Players’ Association uniquely prepared him to the UFL commissioner’s role; league ownership’s original intention to play as a Spring league; the allure of then-untapped pro markets like Omaha, Las Vegas Sacramento; and lessons learned that could have helped last year’s AAF and this year’s soon-to-launch XFL. Vikings vs Broncos… Good morning Horners! Your Minnesota Vikings are at home for this contest against the visiting Denver Broncos. After a quick appeal to the football gods, will Mike Zimmer create a defensive scheme that will destroy the rookie Brandon Allen’s [who?] effort in his first road game as a starter? Will the Broncos defense led by nemesis Vic Fangio’s defensive schemes cause problems for the Vikings offense like they did when he was the Chicago Bears’ DC? We will all find out Sunday afternoon, but the Vikes do have a home field on their side and our fans [that means you] make a difference. The guys wondered about the decline in Vikings pass defense play by Xavier Rhodes and Trae Waynes, Mike Hughes’ excessive targeting and if it can be fixed? They like that the offense is stepping forward and that the purple are scoring more points on average than any other squad in the Zimmer era [actually since Brett Favre led the team in 2009]. Kirk Cousins is doing a great job executing the offense and minimizing his mistakes. We may look at the Dallas Cowboys game as the turning point in this season. Let’s just hope that the Broncos aren’t the Buffalo Bills from last year. Drew leads another trivia challenge, Vikings vs Broncos edition, and Ted gets some great answers. Daunte Culpepper to Randy Moss, then lateraled to Moe Williams is one of our favorite memories from the series. There is more Vikings heritage to learn in this series too, all the while tons of laughs along the way. We hope you have a great game experience and this show being part of it.
