Dave McCormack has one of those voices. As lead singer of Custard, his husky tones and the band's playful indie rock beamed out of Brisbane in the 90s. They were a happy haven from the angsty guitar scene of the time. In 1999, after 5 albums and tonnes of shows as one of Australia's favourite live acts, Custard called it a day.Dave McCormack would go on to play in other bands, he began composing soundtracks for film and television, and his voice would become familiar to an entirely new generation playing Bandit, the blue heeler dad in the mega hit kid's show Bluey.Custard reunited in 2015 and have since released another 3 albums together. In 2020, during the first wave of lockdowns, I asked Dave McCormack to Take 5. His theme was cornerstone songs; the tunes he always returns to. And the reason I want to return to this wonderful conversation, is because we're celebrating the most famous blue heeler in the world gracing our screens once again. This time with an epic 28-minute episode of Bluey. That's like the Oppenheimer of the Bluey universe. So settle in for this very fun chat from the archives. Season 2, Episode 1Guest: Dave McCormack, President, Waukeshaw Development Real-estate developers as a class have a less than stellar reputation across much of the United States. You generally don't become a villainous Hollywood archetype by accident, and it's small-wonder given the countless stories of harmful gentrification where members of marginalized communities are pushed out to make way for a more profitable type of resident. However, many areas left behind by our unequal economic system are in need of some kind of revitalization. The question remains, then: can development be done right? For a new perspective on the issue, Renegade Capital turns to long-time, Virginia-based developer David McCormack on his approach to the practice that attempts to prioritize playing to community strengths.About Dave. With roots in the music world, David McCormack is president of Waukeshaw Development, Inc., a leader in historic tax credit development in many challenging markets across Southside Virginia. He specializes in reuse and revitalization projects, including, the revitalization of a six-block neighborhood in Petersburg, Virginia; the repurposing of historic schools in many  Virginia towns and counties, including Bedford, Cape Charles, and Roanoke; and numerous historic warehouses across the state. In the course of his work, David reevaluates the communities and people that have been left behind by mainstream capital, seeking to develop areas by leveraging their pre-existing strengths. Renegade Capital is thankful to David for taking the time to share his strategies for building a community's wealth with our audience.Renegade Capital Tools & TipsA renegade not only listens but acts. We've consolidated a few tips from this episode to help you support local communities.Support local real estate developers who are uplifting smaller communities: Developers need your help when presenting before your local city or county council. If they are proposing a development project that will help your community, either attend the meeting to voice your approval or send a letter of support to the council.Place your cash in a community bank or credit union: One of the easiest ways you can support communities is by moving your money to a community bank or credit union. The institution uses these funds to provide fair loans and financial services to underestimated communities.Contact your elected officials about historic tax credits: Tax credits encourage real estate development in smaller communities. In the mid 90's there was an explosion of bands coming out of Brisbane and gaining attention both nationally and internationally. When Screamfeeder found themselves on high rotation on Triple J (the national youth radio station) in 1996, the band were based in the inner north-west of Brisbane - Paddington, Bardon, Milton and Red Hill - the suburbs that Bluey is now showing off to the world. After days of torrential rain and what meteorologists termed a rain bomb, many parts of Brisbane went under as the Brisbane River and many suburban creeks flooded. Lou lives in the suburb of Oxley which is in Brisbane's south west - it was devastated by the floods in 2011, and while I couldn't get in to speak to her in person because of the flooding, I managed to get her on the phone to chat about what Oxley was going through. There were plenty of good news stories as well, like the cows rescued from a shed roof by a group of kayakers. This was a chat Justin did with Bluey creator Joe Brumm back in 2019. It was halfway through season 1 in Australia and already the show had become the most succesful show in the ABC's history in terms of downloads on their streaming platform IVIEW. You can read the digital story https://www.96five.com/stories/culture/guests-and-artists/2019/bluey-the-kids-show-showing-off-the-beauty-of-brisbane/ (here), which was the original inspiration for this podcast - that Bluey really is showing off the beauty of Brisbane. Topics discussed include modern fatherhood, Dave McCormack as Bandit Heeler and why Joe set the show in the River City. Bluey's Brisbane is the podcast that explores the real life world of your favourite Heeler family. If you're a similar age to Justin and Lou you grew up with Custard and Dave McCormack as part of the soundtrack of your youth. Younger audiences of course now know Dave for lending his voice to one Bandit Heeler. Ahead of Custard playing two very special shows at The Tivoli in Brisbane this week, we thought what better opportunity to chat to Dave about his thirty plus years as a musician, memories of Brisbane, Custard's latest album 'Respect All Life Forms' and of course his role as Bandit! Custard play The Tivoli this Thursday and Friday (04/02 & 05/02/2021) - a small number of tickets remain for Thursday - https://thetivoli.com.au/events/custard 'Respect All Life Forms' is out now on ABC Music. When we caught up with former Brisbane Deputy Lord Mayor David Hinchliffe in his Fortitude Valley studio, he mentioned that the current vide game industry in Brisbane was a direct result of the music scene in the mid to late 90's. In the 90's Dave McCormack was well known as the frontman for Brisbane indie band Custard, who'd had a string of hits on the ABC youth network Triple J. Custard were regulars on the Australian festival circuit, with appearances at the Big Day Out, Livid Festival and Homebake. The band are still touring and recording, and released their latest album 'Respect All Life Forms' in May of 2020. In this bonus episode Bluey creator Joe Brumm shares a little about why he loves Dave voicing the character of Bandit.

Dave McCormack has a golden voice box and wonderful ‘bitsa' musical catalogue. As singer and songwriter for indie darlings Custard he's told us Music is Crap and taken us to his new Apartment (baby), with releases extending from before Y2K all the way to Couples Fights happening in releases made before 2020 was just about the Rona.As a screen composer he's made soundtracks for Australian screen icons like Rake, Jack Irish, and Redfern Now, and as if that wasn't enough he's also the voice of Bandit Healer from Bluey, Australia's greatest Dad since the Norm, the ‘Life Be In It' Bloke. Also a proud dad to two girls himself (who he sneakily steals ideas from!), the chat sees something shiny and gets distracted at times, but we defy you to resist his charm as it oozed from the speakers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For many of us who came of age in the 90's, Dave McCormack was a familiar voice. As lead singer of Custard, his husky voice atop some truly whimsical indie rock drew us out of the angsty guitar scene of the time; they made songs that were playful and were a beacon beaming out of the Brisbane scene. The band called it a day right after their most successful album Loverama. Dave would go on to play in other bands, he began composing soundtracks for film and television, and his voice would become familiar to an entirely new generation. Playing Bandit, the blue heeler dad in the mega hit kid's show Bluey, that raspy tone all of a sudden filled the homes of Gen X'ers (and their kids) once again. This Take 5 is like hanging out with an old friend, one who has really eclectic and fun music taste. What a joy.
