The longer you create mokuhanga, the more your individual tastes reveal themselves in your own  work, your style, your ideas, and your unique way of seeing the world. These are the qualities that make a mokuhanga artist or craftsperson shine, and they represent the place many practitioners aspire to reach. On this episode of The Unfinished Print: A Mokuhanga Podcast, I speak with someone who has spent decades refining his style, developing his ideas, and defining his relationship with mokuhanga at the same time exploring a variety of printmaking mediums. Daniel Kelly lives and works in Kyoto, Japan, and for many years his work has been exhibited in galleries all around the world. It can also be found in private collections and in some of the world's most important museums. We discuss Daniel's studies under Tomikichiro Tokuriki and the lasting influence Tokuriki has had on his work. Daniel explains his preference for papers from outside Japan and why he generally avoids using Japanese washi. He also details his creative process, discusses his use of multiple printmaking mediums alongside mokuhanga, and he reflects on the advantages each brings to his practice. We also talk about galleries, selling work, and Daniel's views on tradition—and how, in some cases, it can hold artists back. Tomikichirō Tokuriki (1902-2000) - was a Kyoto based mokuhanga printmaker and teacher. His work touched on many themes and styles. From "creative prints" or sōsaku hanga in Japanese, and his publisher/printer prints, or shin hanga prints of traditional Japanese landscapes.  Spring Night at Hirasawa Pond  (1970's) deshi (弟子) - is an apprentice under a teacher in Japanese culture. It can be found across many disciplines such as martial arts, fine arts and sport.  Citty Lights Bookstore - City Lights Bookstore is a famous independent bookstore in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood, founded in 1953 by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021). Clifton Karhu (1927-2007) -  was a mokuhanga printmaker based in Japan. Karhu lived in Japan for most of his life after studying with Tetsuo Yamada and Stanton Macdonald-Wright. HIs themes were of his home city of Kyoto, Japan. More information can be found, here.  Shijo River Bank - Famous Places of Kyoto (18.5" x 15.2")  Honoré Daumier (1808–1879) was a French printmaker, painter, and sculptor best known for his sharp social and political satire. Working primarily in lithography, he created thousands of prints that critiqued politicians, the legal system, and everyday life in nineteenth-century France. Daumier's ability to combine technical mastery with keen observation of human character made him one of the most influential printmakers in Western art history, and his work continues to inspire artists today. Les Plaisirs de l'Hiver (1836) Colour Lithograph [7" x 8.3"] Ted Coyler - is a Canadian printmaker originally from Nova Scotia, Canada. He studied under Toshi Yoshida and makes mokuhanga with mixed media as well as CEAHD lithography. More info, here.  Tsumago (20" x 14")  CWAJ (College Women's Association of Japan) Print Show - is one of Japan's most respected exhibitions of contemporary printmaking. Established in 1956, the annual exhibition showcases both emerging and established artists working across a variety of printmaking techniques. Organized by the College Women's Association of Japan, the show has played an important role in promoting contemporary Japanese prints to international audiences while supporting educational scholarships and programs. For many artists, inclusion in the exhibition is a significant mark of recognition within the printmaking community.  Maurice Sanchez - is a New York–based master printmaker specializing in lithography and collaborative fine art printing. Working through his workshop Derrière L'Étoile Studios, he has collaborated with many major contemporary artists, helping translate drawings and ideas into technically precise and visually rich prints. More info, here.  Untitled (1988) by Maurice Sánchez, Barbara Kruger & James Miller - photo offset lithograph on Rives BFK wove paper   Tatyana Grosman (1904–1982) - was a Russian-American print publisher and founder of Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) on Long Island, one of the most influential print workshops in postwar American art. Working closely with artists in a highly collaborative studio environment, she encouraged experimentation with lithography and other print techniques, helping to redefine printmaking as a primary artistic medium rather than reproduction. Through ULAE, she supported landmark collaborations with artists such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Helen Frankenthaler, and Cy Twombly, playing a central role in the resurgence of American printmaking in the 1960s. Nihonteki (日本的) - is a Japanese word meaning Japanese-style. And is often used to describe a thing thsat reflects qualities that are associated with Japan. It's often used to describe something that reflects qualities associated with Japan such as aesthetics, behavior, design, or cultural approach.  Tamarind Institute - was originally founded in Los Angeles in 1960 by June Wayne, and is a world renowned center for fine art lithography. Established to revive and sustain the art of lithography, which was in decline in the United States, Tamarind quickly became a leader in the education and promotion of lithographic techniques. In 1970, the institute moved to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where it continues to thrive as a key institution in the printmaking world. Dedicated to advancing the lithographic arts through rigorous education, collaborative projects, and the production of high-quality prints, the Tamarind Institute's influence extends globally, contributing significantly to the development and appreciation of lithography as a vibrant art form. More info, here.  Michael Verne - is a gallerist based in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.  Michael specializes in contemporary Japanese prints and paintings. Michael's interview with The Unfinished Print can be found, here.  Sarah Brayer - is a visual artist who is based in Kyoto, Japan. Her works are predominantly poured Japanese paper (washi). Sarah was the first Western artist to work at the Taki paper mill in Echizen. This is where she currently make her paperworks. Sarah have worked continuously in Echizen since 1986 as the only Western artist to do so. Sarah Brayer has also produced mokuhanga in her career. More information can be found, here. Her artwork has gained international recognition, having traveled worldwide. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Mayumi is an environmental activist and resides and works at Ginger Hill Farm, an eco-retreat on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Majushri - on a bicycle (1980) [20" x 29"] seriagraph Kremer Pigemente - is a European based seller of various types of pigments for the world market.Kremer sells different pigment powders, binders, tools, and specialty chemicals tailored for fine art painting, restoration, monument preservation, and specialized handcrafts. More info can be found, here.  Fauvist Colour Theory -   is an approach to colour developed by the Fauves in early 20th-century France, including artists like Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and André Derain (1880-1854). Instead of using colour to describe reality, they used it expressively—often applying pure, unmixed pigments directly from the tube to create intense, non-naturalistic effects. Colour became independent from form and light, used to convey emotion, rhythm, and visual impact rather than accurate representation. This liberated approach to colour was short-lived as a movement but had a lasting influence on modern and contemporary art. Kathy Caraccio - is a master printer, artist, curator, professor, and collector who has collaborated with hundreds of artists from around the world. Through her studio, she has fostered a vibrant, supportive community rooted in shared creativity and craft. More info can be found, here.  Offering (1973) viscosity etching [11"x11") Stanton Macdonald-Wright's colour theory - formed the basis of Synchromism, an abstract art movement he co-founded in 1913 with Morgan Russell. Synchromism, meaning "with colour," sought to construct painting through colour alone, treating it as the primary driver of form, rhythm, and spatial depth rather than line or traditional representation. Drawing parallels with musical composition, Macdonald-Wright and Russell aimed to create visual "harmonies" where colours functioned like chords, building dynamic and structured relationships across the canvas. Rentrée 1995. Prince sort son 17e album en 17 ans. À ce stade, il fait déjà partie des artistes les plus productifs de sa génération ; à l'échelle de sa notoriété, il est même le seul à publier autant de disques. Il faut dire que jusque-là, il n'a rien fait comme les autres. Inutile de dresser la liste de ses singularités : disons pour faire simple que Prince est, et restera, une star unique dans l'histoire de la musique. Nouvelle originalité cette année-là : il ne porte même plus de nom. Sur la pochette de ce nouveau CD, on ne trouve qu'un symbole. Heureusement, l'album, lui, en a un : The Gold Experience.Et les avis sont presque unanimes : c'est l'un de ses meilleurs. Ce qui reste sidérant après une telle carrière. La source du génie n'est donc pas tarie. Chez lui, une règle semble s'imposer : ne jamais s'arrêter. Prince recrute toujours de nouveaux fans. Il suffit de voir les jeunes Parisiens qui font le pied de grue avenue Foch. Car oui, en 1995, cela fait déjà quelques années qu'il possède son appartement à Paris : 600 mètres carrés, rive droite, à deux pas de l'Arc de Triomphe. Avec un copain, on passe parfois en voiture la nuit pour s'arrêter sous ses fenêtres, juste pour voir s'il y avait de la lumière. Rien que le fait de savoir qu'il est là, ça nous fait notre soirée.Mais ça ne suffit pas à ses fans, qui attendent surtout le moment où Prince va sortir pour se précipiter sur lui. Ce n'est pas vraiment ce qu'il préfère. Il finira d'ailleurs par se lasser et abandonner cet appartement, qui fut pourtant la base arrière de quelques-unes des nuits les plus folles qu'il ait offertes à Paris.Car quand l'envie lui prend, Prince est capable de jouer n'importe où, et surtout n'importe quand. Aux Bains-Douches, par exemple, où on annonce un concert à deux heures du matin… et où il ne monte sur scène qu'à cinq heures. Le croirez-vous ? Le public est toujours là. Et il a bien fait : Prince jouera jusqu'à sept heures.À Bruxelles aussi, il a fait le coup : Botanique, Mirano, Viagge… Mais à Paris, où il ne rate aucune Fashion Week, ces apparitions nocturnes font presque partie du décor. Et pendant que tout cela se passe, pendant que Paris dort ou veille pour lui, Prince continue d'écrire, d'enregistrer, d'empiler les chansons. Au milieu de tout ça, il en signe une qui, elle, va toucher tout le monde, sans détour. Une chanson simple, directe, évidente, qui rappelle que derrière la machine, le symbole et les nuits sans fin, il y a aussi chez Prince, la capacité à écrire, encore et toujours, des chansons qui parlent à tout le monde.Et c'est ça, le plus rare et le plus fort qu'il y a avec lui. Même quand on pense l'avoir suffisamment suivi pour le connaître, Prince trouve encore le moyen de nous surprendre, avec la plus simple des évidences.

Can we trace where Western Civilization went wrong to the 1400s when Filippo Brunelleschi, known for his brazen duomo designs in Florence, Italy, invented the linear perspective that dominated Art, Architecture, and city planning ever since? This almost-photographic perspective of the world around us translated to cities and their people being separated from nature, and the ecosystems that nourish us all, at least that signifies an auspicious moment in history. Some European painters in the early 20th Century, like Picasso and Matisse, challenged this linear perspective and were called Fauves or wild beasts. But do we need more wild beasts, rather than just bad-boy painters from Europe, to overcome these linear perspective machines and heal our relationship with the Earth? The musical movements that started in the US and the UK in the 90s have been well documented (particularly in reference to certain bands), but not so much has been written about the purple patch of creativity that took place in Australia over that decade. Over the last few years, my guest for this episode has taken it upon himself to rectify that, showing particular dedication to his favourite band....that just happens to be of that decade. Welcome to episode 185 of Love That Album. I'll make a confession here.....my 90s musical choices were probably different to many of the artists that were part of that purple patch, but it is undeniable how new and innovative bands were becoming – partly influenced by what happened in Seattle, but so much was independent of what was happening overseas. The Whitlams, Regurgitator, The Cruel Sea, The Fauves, Something For Kate and some kids from Newcastle were amongst many that were a huge part of the landscape. One band in particular, though, had the knack of combining 90s with the 60s and the 70s. You Am I fronted by the extremely charismatic Tim Rogers started out grunge. In short order, though, they moved away from that to write and perform songs that combined rock aggression with melodicism, and could also write a “tear in your beer” ballad. (Big Star mixed with Hellacopters and The Replacements.....my opinion and I'm sticking with it). You Am I released 3 albums in a row that went to number 1 on the charts.....no other Australian band had ever done that. Yet, in the US and Europe, they remained a cult act. Danny Yau is the host of Just Ace, a podcast dedicated to documenting the 90s Australian alternative music scene – whatever the hell that means (IYKYK). He's also You Am I's number 1 fan, and accidental archivist. I invited Danny to join me to discuss You Am I's 6th album (and their second one after the 90s) Deliverance. The band always made the music they wanted, but with no support from their major label forthcoming, they decided to make an album with no consideration to label requirements. It would have been easy to chat about the albums they're most associated with HiFi Way and Hourly Daily (both 10 out of 10 records), but we do things differently on this little show. Danny and I discuss a myriad of things including the Melbourne–Sydney rivalry, the difference between how Australians and Americans define “rooting”, songs of sadness and joy, and what the 90s meant in terms of Australian music.....and we do a hell of a lot of You Am I talk.....some of it in relation to our focus album, Deliverance. Can we trace where Western Civilization went wrong to the 1400s when Filippo Brunelleschi, known for his brazen duomo designs in Florence, Italy, invented the linear perspective that dominated Art, Architecture, and city planning ever since? This almost-photographic perspective of the world around us translated to cities and their people being separated from nature, and the ecosystems that nourish us all. Some European painters in the early 20th Century, like Picasso and Matisse, challenged this linear perspective and were called Fauves or wild beasts. But do we need more wild beasts, rather than just bad-boy white dudes, to overcome these linear perspective machines and heal our relationship with the Earth? Sept convives, s'étant plus ou moins bien accommodés à l'Occupation allemande, se retrouvent chez l'un d'eux pour fêter l'anniversaire de leur hôte. La soirée se déroule sous les meilleurs auspices, lorsqu'au pied de leur immeuble sont abattus deux officiers allemands. En représailles, la Gestapo investit l'immeuble et décide de prendre deux otages par appartement. Mais le Commandant Kaubach, qui dirige l'opération, reconnaît en la personne du propriétaire de l'appartement, M. Pélissier, un libraire à qui il achète régulièrement des ouvrages. Soucieux d'entretenir les rapports courtois qu'il a toujours eus avec lui, il décide de les laisser finir leur dîner et de ne passer prendre ses otages qu'au dessert. Mieux… il leur laisse la liberté de choisir eux-mêmes les deux otages qui l'accompagneront. C'est ainsi que peut commencer "Le Repas des Fauves". Basset Fauve de Bretagne: Old Breed is New to AKC Miscellaneous [caption id="attachment_12428" align="alignleft" width="289"] Nick Frost, AKC Judge and Hound Authority[/caption] Nick Frost, AKC judge and hound specialist, joins host Laura Reeves to talk about the charming Basset Fauve de Bretagne. Better known for his Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen breeding program, Frost was involved with the Fauve in England in the late 1970s. The Fauve, as the breed is commonly called, entered AKC's Miscellaneous competition for the first time in July of this year. They have previously competed in Open Shows and participated in the Foundation Stock Service. According to the Basset Fauve de Bretagne Club of America, “The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is truly an old French Hound, tracing back to the 1500's when Francois I had a pack of Breton hounds which he hunted regularly.” [caption id="attachment_12430" align="alignright" width="248"] Frost with Merrick, Varon Aymeric at Dehra born in quarantine at Ryslip kennels.[/caption] Fauves, like many European breeds, were nearly lost due to the World Wars and had to be reconstructed from just a handful of breeding stock, Frost said. In France, the breed is a rabbit hunting hound and the French are very proud of the breed's hunting ability. They are kept as pack hounds in their native land and as a result are very good with other dogs. “(The Fauves are) very sweet tempered,” Frost observed. “I found them more so even than the (PBGV). I never experienced a fight with my Fauves.” These short-legged hounds carry a short, hard, dense wire coat, less profusely furnished than the distant cousin the PBGV. Minimal, low maintenance grooming is required for Fauves with correct coats. “It's a breed that needs activity,” Frost noted. “Like all pack hounds, they just need a companion. They are great with kids. The breed is a bit more people-focused than many scent hounds.” [caption id="attachment_12431" align="alignleft" width="308"] Fauves are generally biddable and people oriented.[/caption] “This is still a hound,” Frost said. “It still can be “deaf”, you can't trust them to come when called every time. They are still being hunted and worked full time in Europe. So that prey drive is still close to the surface.”

Anna CavalleraInaugurata ieri, sabato 15 luglio, a Racconigi la mostra con i nuovi spazi espositivi dedicati alle opere dell'artista racconigese Carlo Sismonda, nella pinacoteca che porta il suo nome assieme a quello del pittore Giuseppe Augusto Levis.Curata da Anna Cavallera, con l'organizzazione artistica di Benedetta Lauro, “L'esposizione – spiega Cavallera - presenta una ventina di opere pittoriche e grafiche scelte che sono state generosamente messe a disposizione da collezionisti privati.I quadri intendono ripercorrere visivamente alcuni momenti salienti della lunga carriera stilistica dell'artista racconigese e spaziano dai dipinti incentrati sul paesaggio alle nature morte, tutte caratterizzate da un forte ed acceso cromatismo in un percorso sia stilistico che umano intrapreso nell'arte di Sismonda”.La pinacoteca civica di Racconigi era stata inaugurata il 19 dicembre 2021 e inizialmente tutto il piano terra dell'immobile era dedicato alle opere di Carlo Sismonda, ma da ieri sono stati dedicati nuovi spazi che ospitano i quadri provenienti da collezioni private. Benedetta Lauro giovane volontaria ha curato l'organizzazione artistica della mostra. Laureata in Storia dell'arte e conservazione dei beni artistici ad indirizzo moderno all'Università Ca' Foscari di Venezia Lauro ha discusso una tesi specialista nell'ambito incisorio. Appassionata alle opere di Sismondi ne ha approfondito la loro ‘lettura'.“Sismonda fu pittore appartenente alla grande tradizione figurativa italiana – spiega Benedetta Lauro - con accenti legati alla rivoluzione formale postimpressionista da Cézanne ai Fauves con al centro Van Gogh, la dialettica tra natura e simbolo e le derive neoespressioniste”.Tra le novità della pinacoteca Levis-Sismondi in occasione del riallestimento inaugurato negli ambienti espositivi del primo piano dell'immobile, hanno trovato una nuova collocazione anche alcune opere dell'artista Giuseppe Augusto Levis, che sono state sistemate secondo un ordine cronologico e per temi: dai panorami delle vallate piemontesi immortalati tra la fine del ‘800 all' inizio del ‘900, agli scorci relativi alla Prima Guerra Mondiale, fino alle prospettive olandesi, russe e del Nor Africa.La pinacoteca civica di Racconigi ha iniziato una nuova collaborazione con il museo civico Luigi Mallè di Dronero rappresentato dalla curatrice e storica dell'arte Ivana Mulatero. Frutto di questa sinergia atta a promuovere e valorizzare le due realtà espositive saranno le prossime iniziative previste in cui un opera di Carlo Sismonda fa da trait d'union tra le due sedi espositive in quanto fa parte della collezione appartenente al ‘fondo Berra' conservato nel museo Mallè. Vos recherches portent notamment sur les problèmes sociaux et anthropologiques de l'islam en France ainsi que sur la philosophie des sciences sociales.Vous avez récemment publié, aux éditions Fauves, un essai intitulé « Iran. La jeunesse démocratique contre l'Etat prédateur ». Dans cet ouvrage, vous analysez le mouvement de contestation qui secoue le régime en place depuis la mort, le 16 septembre 2022, de Mahsa Amini, 22 ans, après une garde à vue à Téhéran pour un voile mal ajusté. A ce jour, la répression des manifestants a causé la mort d'au moins 500 civils et quelque 20.000 personnes ont été placées en détention.Les étudiantes et les jeunes actives sont particulièrement mobilisées dans les manifestations et contestent notamment les normes vestimentaires du régime. Ce mouvement traduit l'émergence d'une nouvelle subjectivité féminine en Iran, sensible aux thèses féministes portées par l'Occident et marquée par une exigence nouvelle d'appropriation de son corps, dans le cadre de la diffusion de réseaux sociaux comme Snapchat ou Instagram.Face à ces jeunes femmes, un régime théocratique qui ressemble de plus en plus, selon vos analyses, à un « totalitarisme mou » faisant un usage massif et généralisé de la violence et de la répression. Malgré la propagande du régime, les revendications des manifestants sont largement soutenues par la population et, selon un récent sondage de l'institut Gamaan, 72% des Iraniens sont aujourd'hui opposés au port obligatoire du voile. C'est l'échec de l'Etat théocratique à enrayer le mouvement de sécularisation de la société iranienne, sous l'influence croisée d'Internet, des évolutions du modèle familial, de la diaspora iranienne et de l'extension de l'Université.Dans le sillage de cette « révolte du voile » l'affaire des intoxications dans les écoles de filles, débutée fin novembre entrainant nausée, maux de tête, engourdissements, difficultés respiratoires et palpitations a affecté, selon les autorités, « plus de 5.000 élèves » dans « quelque 230 établissements scolaires ». En janvier, à la suite de la collecte d'échantillons dans l'usine souterraine de Fordo en Iran, l'Agence internationale de l'énergie atomique a détecté des particules d'uranium enrichi à 83,7%, soit juste en deçà des 90% nécessaires pour produire une bombe atomique, sans pouvoir dire à ce stade si ce seuil a été atteint accidentellement ou volontairement. Depuis que Donald Trump s'est retiré en 2018 de l'accord sur le nucléaire conclu en 2015, l'Iran s'affranchit de ses obligations sur le nucléaire militaire. Tandis que la guerre en Ukraine a permis à l'Iran de se rapprocher de la Russie, à laquelle il livre des drones et autres armes par la mer Caspienne, en contrepartie, Moscou ne s'oppose plus à la vente de chasseurs Su-35 pour moderniser l'aviation iranienne. L'Iran vient en outre de procéder à de nouvelles manœuvres navales conjointes avec la Chine et la Russie dans l'océan Indien. Sous l'égide de la Chine, Téhéran a annoncé le 10 mars vouloir rétablir ses relations diplomatiques avec Ryad, rompues depuis 2016.
