The 1990s was a particularly exciting time in Australian rock music. The musical movements that started in the US and the UK in the 90s have been well documented (particularly in reference to certain bands), but not so much has been written about the purple patch of creativity that took place in Australia over that decade. Over the last few years, my guest for this episode has taken it upon himself to rectify that, showing particular dedication to his favourite band....that just happens to be of that decade. Welcome to episode 185 of Love That Album. I'll make a confession here.....my 90s musical choices were probably different to many of the artists that were part of that purple patch, but it is undeniable how new and innovative bands were becoming – partly influenced by what happened in Seattle, but so much was independent of what was happening overseas. The Whitlams, Regurgitator, The Cruel Sea, The Fauves, Something For Kate and some kids from Newcastle were amongst many that were a huge part of the landscape. One band in particular, though, had the knack of combining 90s with the 60s and the 70s. You Am I fronted by the extremely charismatic Tim Rogers started out grunge. In short order, though, they moved away from that to write and perform songs that combined rock aggression with melodicism, and could also write a “tear in your beer” ballad. (Big Star mixed with Hellacopters and The Replacements.....my opinion and I'm sticking with it). You Am I released 3 albums in a row that went to number 1 on the charts.....no other Australian band had ever done that. Yet, in the US and Europe, they remained a cult act. Danny Yau is the host of Just Ace, a podcast dedicated to documenting the 90s Australian alternative music scene – whatever the hell that means (IYKYK). He's also You Am I's number 1 fan, and accidental archivist. I invited Danny to join me to discuss You Am I's 6th album (and their second one after the 90s) Deliverance. The band always made the music they wanted, but with no support from their major label forthcoming, they decided to make an album with no consideration to label requirements. It would have been easy to chat about the albums they're most associated with HiFi Way and Hourly Daily (both 10 out of 10 records), but we do things differently on this little show. Danny and I discuss a myriad of things including the Melbourne–Sydney rivalry, the difference between how Australians and Americans define “rooting”, songs of sadness and joy, and what the 90s meant in terms of Australian music.....and we do a hell of a lot of You Am I talk.....some of it in relation to our focus album, Deliverance. We ran out of time towards the end, but I had a ton of fun chatting with Danny, and we've even agreed on a future episode of See Hear Podcast he's going to join Tim, Kerry and myself on – discussing a film about a fictional 90s band....of course. Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! Why do you like the music you do?  Is it as simple as “It's what I heard on the radio”? Or something deeper? People with elder siblings may be exposed to music earlier than first children.   Jeff had an older brother, so was exposed earlier to cool music - Beatles, Janis, Hendrix, and so on.  Mick was the eldest in his family and had to find his own taste. (No surprise considering what he listens to!) Were you bullied as a child?  Influence!  Did you share music with your friends?  Influence!  Did you have access to a good radio station?  Or print media?  Influence!! We talk about our early influences – musical & otherwise – and look at how they played a role in what we listen to today.    In Rock News, Ringo has released a country album, and Toto is touring.  Oh well, shouldn't take them long to play their 3 hits. You know Jeff's obsessed with AI, so he asked three AI brands to nominate the greatest albums of 1971.  Not much variation, really.  One day, we may ask them to understand quality, rather than sales figures, and see what they give us.    Our Album You Must Listen to Before you Die is “Blue” by Joni Mitchell - an top grade album that deserves to be here.  Mick references Atlantic Records' sampler called “Very Together” which featured “Carey” from this album, and pointed out a link between Joni Mitchell and Scottish hard rock band, Nazareth. How did YOUR tastes develop?  Drop us a line & let us know. Enjoy! References:  RAM Magazine, Rock Australia Magazine, Countdown, Molly Meldrum, 2DoubleJay, The Magus/Holger Brockman, Chris Winter, Mac Cocker, “Never Mind the Bollocks”, The Sex Pistols, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, David Bowie, “Five Years”, “Room to Move”, Chris Winter, “Starman”, “Rock'n'roll Suicide”, Birdland, Weather Report, Joe Zawinul, Brian Eno, “Another Green World”, “Zawinul Lava”, “Rock'n'Roll Animal”, Lou Reed, Steve Hunter, “Sweet Jane”, “Heroin”, “Rock'n'Roll”, Berlin, Alice Cooper, Velvet Underground, Peter Gabriel, “Car”, “Stranded”, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, “Song for Europe”, “Street Life”, “Psalm”, Sisters of Mercy, XTC, Nico, REM, Television, Patti Smith, “Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band”, The Beatles, "Within You Without You”, “Tomorrow Never Knows”, Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Like a Rolling Stone”, Revolver, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon and Garfunkel, Pearl, Janis Joplin, Tapestry, Carole King, Slade Alive, Hot August Nigh”, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, “Dark Side of the Moon”, “Led Zeppelin IV”, “Silk Degrees”, Box Scaggs, “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”, Rick Wakeman, “Woodstock”, “Monterey Pop”, “The Song Remains the Same”, “The Last Waltz”, The Guitar Spa, Redeye Records, John Foy, bootleg records, “His Master's Voice”, “Sheetkeeckers”, Australian electronica/dance music store, Hipgnosis, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Regurgitator, “I like your old stuff better than your new stuff", DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Blue, Joni Mitchell, Henry Lewy, “Very Together”, “This Flight Tonight”, Nazareth  Episode Playlist  The first song played by 2DoubleJay - “You Just Like Me ‘Cos I'm Good in Bed”

Punk rock mainstays Unwritten Law should have been given Australian citizenship by now.Since first hitting our shores in 1996 the band have only toured the US more times, solidifying the love affair that has one so far as to Unwritten Law having one of their members live in this country full time.Best known and loved as part of the Warped Tour Festivals, Unwritten Law have struck the perfect blending of punk and hardcore, almost making the form of music an art form. And so it is Unwritten Law are returning to Australia once more, playing at Hotter Than Hell Festival dates as well as a select number of headlining gigs. Is Australia ready? We should be, but if there's one thing Unwritten Law have instilled in us over the years, it is to never expect anything from them. The band's resident Aussie, guitarist Scotty McLaughlin joined HEAVY to talk more."This is the shortest tour we've done in ten years," he laughed. "Usually we do a month here, but this is the quickest little thing we've done in a long time."We mention the Hotter Than Hell line up and the fact it almost has a Warped Tour kind of vibe about it."It does," he nodded. "I was looking up old tour posters from the 90s, and it's the same bands for the most part (laughs). It does have that old feel to it."In the full interview Scotty talks more about Hotter Than Hell, playing with other bands like Regurgitator, Less Than Jake, Jebediah, and The Bennies, playing their Black album in full and problems that come with doing something like that, their own headlining shows and how they will be different to the festival shows, what to expect from Unwritten Law live and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersAustralian music was a melting pot of talent in the early 90s with bands like Tumbleweed, Regurgitator, Spiderbait, Magic Dirt and the Superjesus planting the initial seeds that would see them still knocking crowds dead to this day - some 30 years later.Punk upstarts the Hard-Ons were also a major player in the thriving scene, but it is an offshoot of that band - formed after internal bickering led to one of the band's many breakups - called Nunchukka Superfly who made perhaps the biggest impact of them all despite never releasing an album and disbanding after a few short years. In that time Nunchukka Superfly - Ray Ahn and Peter Black from Hard-Ons, Massappeal drummer Peter Allen and former Harpoon frontman and future Drones co-founder (and now JJ McCann Transmission main man) James McCann - earnt a fierce reputation as a must see live band, managing to record an albums worth of material that was seemingly lost to the ether and never to be seen or heard again.Until now.The masters of that album found their way back into the hands of McCann, who dutifully passed them along to the rest of the band, ensuring the collection of now timeless punk rock tunes would finally see the light of day.The band released Nunchukka Superfly 95 earlier this year and announced a run of shows in celebration, proving there's still life in the legs and lungs of this Australian musical enigma. And where there's life, there's hope, as evidenced by the fact Blackie and James reached out to us here at HEAVY to talk about the past, present and future of Nunchukka Superfly. We start with the album and ask how it felt to finally release it after so many years."I guess you could call it strange," Blackie mused, "but at the same time it felt really good, and I think we can thank James for that because I didn't even have a copy of the recordings. I forgot what it was like even. But James got in touch about a year and a half ago and said mate, have you heard that fucken thing we did all those many moons ago? It's really ferocious. We should release it and I remember thinking yeah, yeah, maybe one day. He sent me a copy, and I was like holy fuck he's right. This is mad.""I had it on cassette for years," James added. "And I think we all had a cassette copy initially, but I wore that out eventually. In Sydney Jason, who recorded it, was working across the road from where I lived at the Hopeton Hotel on the weekends, and he said I have that DAT tape of that Nunchukka Superfly recording, do you want a copy? I said yes, and I sat on that for years because I didn't have a DAT player (laughs). I had access to this old 90s DAT player about ten years ago at a friend's studio, so we plugged in the old player and put the cassette in and BAM, there it was loud and clear, and somehow I had stored it away well enough to obviously have not lost it. That was the start, then I got it digitized and sent it to Blackie and Ray."In the full interview, Blackie and James talk more about the release of their debut album, Nunchucka Superfly 95, after many years, and the upcoming reunion shows. They shared their memories of the band's formation, their last show in 1996, and their chemistry during the first jam session, expressing excitement about the reunion and the potential for future collaborations.Blackie and James also discussed the process of obtaining and digitizing the original recording of their debut album, emphasizing that no alterations were made to the original recording. They reflected on the quality of the music and the positive reactions on social media and strong initial sales, including overseas interest, and expressed pride and gratitude for the continued interest in their music after so many years.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Dive deep into the heart of the music industry with another enriching episode of "Industry Icons" on Triple M Homegrown. Host Matty O invites Michael Parisi, an industry veteran and host of the new podcast 'Vinyl Tap,' to demystify the complexities of today's ever-changing music landscape. The Backstory Michael Parisi's journey started at the promotions department of Warner Bros. in the early '90s, where he laid the groundwork for what would become a star-studded career. Listen as he takes you back to his early days of orchestrating promo gigs for the legendary Red Hot Chili Peppers on their seminal album, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik." Michael reminisces about his youthful excitement and the challenges of dealing with larger-than-life personalities like Flea and Anthony Kiedis. He even spills a bit of tea on a few borderline-outrageous stories that will make you wish you had backstage access back then. A 30-Year Perspective Fast forward to 2023, and Michael has an established legacy in marketing and A&R positions. He reflects on how the industry has evolved over the last three decades, focusing on the shift in emphasis away from live music and stage performances for budding artists. Michael passionately argues that if you can't command a live audience, your chances of making it big are slim. He elaborates on this by discussing what it truly takes to capture attention in today's digital-first era. The Current State of the Industry It's a different ballgame for emerging artists today. Michael details the unique challenges that artists now face, from navigating social media algorithms to understanding streaming metrics. However, his fundamental advice remains the same: maximum stage time and self-promotion are crucial. "It's your job to build an audience no matter how. If it's playing 50 dodgy acoustic gigs on a Tuesday night in Wesleyanne in Northcote, then so be it," he advises. Stories and Anecdotes Fans of Australian band Regurgitator will be riveted by Michael's experiences dealing with their enigmatic frontman, Quan, whose unconventional approaches to the industry have shocked him time and time again. Plus, don't miss the jaw-dropping backstage stories of playing pool with rock legends like The Rolling Stones and Rage Against the Machine. A Game to Remember To round off the episode, Michael plays an entertaining game of 'Write, Party, Dinner' featuring Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, and Oasis. Who would he choose to manage, party with, and invite over for dinner? His answers might just surprise you. This comprehensive episode is not only a walk down memory lane but also a practical guidebook for anyone aspiring to carve a niche in the world of music. Tune in for an experience filled with invaluable lessons, industry secrets, and untold stories that only a seasoned professional like Michael Parisi can provide.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Throughout the Classic Material podcast series, we've heard about the importance of Triple J. The alternative radio station that represented the only chance of airplay for Australian hip-hop artists. But, what made Triple J decide Australian hip-hop was worth a chance? The station has been responsible for giving a platform to so many of our local hip-hop acts. But it might never have happened if it weren't for one group. One group that broke through in the early 2000s and made local hip hop appeal to the average suburban Australian kid. One group that used a little rock influence to introduce hip-hop to fans of Regurgitator and Powderfinger, creating new opportunities for the next generation to break through. That one group was 1200 Techniques. This is the story of their first album, 'Choose One'.Hosted by Steve DuckPost Production by Posterboy MediaClassic Material is a co-production of Acclaim Magazine and Complex AUSupport Classic Material with a 5-star rating and review to help us tell more of Australian hip-hop's untold stories.

Tonight is all about that Land Down Under !   Australia has produced some amazing bands - many you know VERY well, many you don't - and we are about to introduce (or re-introduce) you to a whole bunch of great tunes...  give us a listen...     HEY !  Please comment on this one... If you were able to meet your favorite band ever... what are the Three Questions you would ask them... we will be interviewing many bands coming up this next year - and want your input... so do that please.   We went through the 70's (The Saints, AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Skyhooks, INXS, etc..) and the 80's briefly (Divinyls, Hunters & Collectors, Nick Cave, Crowded House) the 90's (Savage Garden, Regurgitator, The Vines, The Avalanches, The Sleepy Jackson) and after that... 2000 and beyond...  Jet, Cut Copy, Pendulum, Howling Bells, Wolfmother, and Empire of the Sun.   Look - you don't have to like all the music we discuss... but it's totally fine to appreciate the artists.  If there's something you liked hearing - go buy stuff directly from that band.      Thanks for joining in on this conversation between two buddies who love music, and love talking about it.     Support your local artist !

Scratching The Surface With ANDREW GLITORIS From GLITORIS

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersWhile some bands out there proclaim and advocate freedom of speech and expression, every so often you come across a band that are more than that.A band that would literally bleed for their cause and their stance, and one which hides behind nothing - not even their music - when it comes to having their voice heard. One such band is Canberra outfit Glitoris who have made their name - and rightfully so - on the back of experimentation and confrontation, blending "genre-defying art rock musicianship with razor-sharp lyrics, sardonic wit, on-point politics, and theatrical badassery".Put simply, Glitoris not only walk the walk, they talk the talk as well with their many beliefs personiified and given substance through verse. With their new single Lickety Split out now and a recent tour with Regurgitator in the can, guitarist Andrew Glitoris joined HEAVY to discuss life and music in general."Glitoris is a four piece, protest, kind of feminine punk, rock, pop, metal, art band," she explained. We ask Andrew how the reception has been for Lickety Split, a song described as "a celebration of sex workers and sex positivity that defies norms with a soundscape more akin to a theatrical number"."Great," she enthused. "We've been really happy with it, particularly radio. Community radio have loved it, but, I mean, we chose to lead the album with a single that was directly aimed to the community that we're from rather than the mainstream music audience, if that makes sense? The band has emerged from... I guess what's safe to say is a kind of fringe and queer community. We have always had a very strong LGBT following and the song is about celebrating sex positivity, queer sex positivity. It's about celebrating sex workers and all the work that they do. We feature a lot of our friends and our community in the video, which I think has been quite racy for some. It's funny, because you don't really realise how conservative a lot of music or a lot of popular culture is until you do something like this and you release it. Obviously, our community love it. They've gone off and think it's great, but we've had some eyebrows raised in other areas and it's like wow, we really are in a very conservative time if people get a bit hot under the collar at th sight of a pole dancer. It's like, bloody Hell. There's no nudity in the video. We're just commentating on our community and celebrating it."In the full interview, Andrew talks more about Lickety Split, the fact it is the band's first single in three years, what they have been up to in that time, their upcoming self titled album which will be out on July 14, what to expect from it, the band's sound and how they make it work, if there's such as thing as going too far with genres, the tour with Regurgitator, their own upcoming tour and more.

In the mid-90's the alternative music revolution was well underway, and Brisbane bands like Regurgitator, Screamfeeder, Powderfinger and Custard (featuring one future Bandit Heeler) were taking Brisbane to the world. And 25 years before Bluey had international audiences swooning over Queenslander houses and the steep hills of Brisbane's inner city, writer Nick Earls had readers the world over falling in love with the River City when he released the smash hit Zigzag Street, which was set in Red Hill. Lou sat down with Nick to chat about all things Red Hill and Nick's efforts at renovating a Queenslander workers cottage which featured a three sided dunny. Empires is the new novel by Nick Earls and you can pick it up https://www.booktopia.com.au/empires-nick-earls/book/9781760898700.html (here.) Bluey's Brisbane is the podcast that explores the real life world of your favourite Heeler family. Quan Yeomans is a guy who likes to play. Whether fronting Regurgitator for the past quarter century and bringing his songwriting clout to their punk, pop, and electronic missives, stepping out with the hyper sounds of Happyland, or collaborating on any number of other projects, there's a sense of childlike wonder, of curiosity and risk, to  all he does. That's why I asked him to Take 5 with his inner child songs. I wanted to hear that music that, for him, captured that sense of freedom, of newness, of the silliness of childhood. What I didn't realise when I came up with the theme though, was that his late father was a psychiatrist. And the concept and exploration of the inner child, is something he had been exploring his whole life. From James Chance to The Velvet Underground to Peggy Lee, this is a perfectly wonderful trip through Quan's brain and musical heart.
