In this episode, Eva, a single mum, artist and designer talks about stay and plays. Stay and Plays are often volunteer-run groups, found in church halls. They are places people looking after very young babies and children can go, to play with others, have a cup of tea and a chat, and maybe even make friends. An experienced play facilitator herself, Eva first discovered the value of stay and plays when she was a new parent. They were, she says, life saving and gave her a community that has lasted. If they are so vital, why then does no one talk about them?Eva goes on a mission to investigate why stay and plays are so devalued. During the pandemic stay and plays were the first to close and the last to open. She finds out about the history of Hackney Playbus which turned 50 years old in 2022. The playbus was one of the places she bought her own son when he was small, and talks to parents using stay and plays now. She asks, are the needs of families and children at the heart of conversations around childcare now? This episode contains:an interview with Pauline Weinstein, interviewed by Craig Fees in 1996, reproduced with permission from the Planned Environment Therapy Archives and Special Collections (https://archives.mulberrybush.org.uk/records/TCVOICES/173)an interview with Claire Kelly, member of Hackney Playbus board. We sat down with Claire Kelly from Little Fish Property Developments to get an insight into what it's like running a townhouse development project.   Little Fish is a Melbourne-based full-service residential property development company, specialising in client-side project management. Claire works as a project manager for Little Fish, taking the projects from the planning stage through to the end delivery and handing the project over for sale.   Claire shares what it looks like to develop a client professional relationship that culminates in a great outcome with excellent profits. She highlights that being across the full lifecycle of a project, from site acquisition to sale makes an enormous difference in ensuring a successful development.   The most important skill Claire has learned as a project manager is the ability to bring the experts together to find a solution. Ensuring transparency is also key, and Claire explains how Little Fish's back-end project management portal helps keep both clients and her team across all aspects of the project.   In our conversation, Claire also reveals what she loves about commercial construction as well as her favourite parts of project management (not least, finalising cost sheets and seeing a positive return).   A lot of Little Fish's work focuses on dual lot developments. We chat about the reason for this and how understanding the market and what people are looking for is key.   Claire outlines how to assess a site - from working out what can fit to determining what's appropriate for the market in that particular area. Little Fish's focus is quality over quantity, which is really clear when you look at their project outcomes.   Enjoy the episode!   LINKS:   Website:    https://www.littlefishproperties.com.au/ LinkedIn:    https://au.linkedin.com/company/littlefishproperties   Buy our new book:        BuildHer, A practical guide to building and renovating BuildHer Website:        https://buildhercollective.com.au/ BuildHer Instagram:        @buildhercollective BuildHer Facebook:        Women who Design, Decorate, Renovate & Build Register for a call:         https://go.oncehub.com/BuildHer  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It’s episode 165 of Adobe & Teardrops! Thanks for sticking with me!   Well, everything is coming up Rachel this week. I’ve been on spring break. I joined a fantasy baseball league. I joined a queer softball league. Opening day is in less than an hour as I record this. We might be moving into a 2-bedroom apartment in the same building. Oh yeah -- things are good. Also, an interview with Hey, King!   Album of the Week: Hope Dunbar -- Sweetheartland   Hope Dunbar’s Sweetheartland. This is the kind of music I’ve been looking for since I started Adobe & Teardrops. Dunbar has an awesome heartland rock sound while staying true to herself, something that, frankly, I haven’t seen many women who go for that sound really succeed at. She’s a great storyteller, which we’ll hear on “What Were You Thinking,” and can really pull out the stops with “Evacuate,” which Patreon subscribers will hear. Elizabeth King -- “Living in the Last Days” (Living in the Last Days) (2:46) Cristina Vane -- “Blueberry Hill” (Nowhere Sounds Lovely) (5:55) Kai Mata -- “Wine” (Single) (9:55) Henry Conlon -- “Lucy” (Single) (13:59) Valerie June -- “Stay” (The Moon and the Stars: Prescriptions for Dreamers) (19:00) Hope Dunbar -- “What Were You Thinking” (Sweetheartland) (22:01) Scott Making Cents -- “Profile Picture” (Dog EP) (25:28) Andrew Waite -- “Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That” (Single) (28:55) al Riggs -- “Ragged But Right” (I Got A Big Electric Fan To Keep Me Cool While I Sleep) (33:20) Amina Shareef Ali -- “Honest Song” (In The Dark (Awake Of Course)) (36:33) The Barker Brothers -- “Thinkin’ June” (Single) (39:41) Claire Kelly -- “The Restless and the Reckless” (The Scenic Route) (42:39) Hey, King! -- Interview and “Half Alive.” (Read the rest of the interview here.) With the government announcing a raise to JobSeeker (formerly known as NewStart) for the first time since 1994, welfare groups have been left dissatisfied with the $25 weekly increase. To get to the bottom of whether the implementation is reasonable, we talked to Dr Jeff Borland from the University of Melbourne about how raising the rate to $125 per week would still provide people with an incentive to find work. And for those who are young and out of home, it can often be difficult to receive assistance as the system looks at the income of your parents or partner. So even if you don’t receive financial support from them, why is Centrelink still turning you away? We deep dive into the gaps within the system with AUWU Spokesperson Kristin O’Connell. Also on the show, we look into courses that treat mental health just as importantly as our physical health. Much like the first-aid courses we are given as children and adults, there are now courses which offer training for the public to deal with incidents of mental health. Talking to Dr Claire Kelly from Mental Health First Aid Australia, we discuss how this can help us become better equipped when stressful situations arise. Meanwhile, digital art has found its place online, with artist Beeple selling their original piece of work for $69 million. While it sounds absurd, we give you all the details on how this market has took off. To try and make you smile, we wrap up the show with all the good news happening right now! Dr Claire Kelly is the Manager of Research and Evaluation at MHFA Australia. Claire has been involved with MHFA since 2003, when she first became an instructor while completing her Doctorate at the Centre for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University in Canberra, where the program was first developed. Prior to her current position, Claire worked on the MHFA Guidelines used to inform MHFA courses.   Claire's PhD thesis was written on the mental health literacy of Australian adolescents. Her main passion is the mental health of young people and minimising the impacts that mental health problems can have on development, educational outcomes and long-term functioning.  Claire has suffered episodes of depression and anxiety since adolescence, which has been a driver for this work. Because there's a world of difference between mental health and mental illness. Can you talk about that for a moment? What is mental health It's like health it's on a continuum You can  have good health or poor health You can have an illness and it can be managed and have good health  Some people come out of a mental illness can have high levels of compassion and empathy  Claire talks about the Idea of Japanese pottery art called Kintsugi where cracks are filled with gold.  One in four young people between the ages of 15 and 25 will develop a mental health disorder in a 12 month period What are some of the barriers to help seeking?  Help seeking is low across all ages,  Young people are less likely to seek help Low levels of stigma towards others but higher self-stigma, feelings of I can deal with it myself.  It's hard to know what are normal changes, this can be tricky for people to recognise. Changes during adolescence Changes in  focus and mood Physical changes over time Body Behaviour   Like any other sickness, mental health problems result in missed days, work left undone and wasted opportunities.  What are some of the additional impacts of not getting treatment early? Educational outcomes getting the grades they want at school that they are capable of Impacts the study they may like to do later on Impacts on physical development  Social development  Making friends  Relationships  Withdrawn    Loneliness can be a factor, as you withdraw due to work mental health, you may feel more and more lonely and find it more difficult to reach out.   The MHFA course discusses some of the potential red flags/ things to look out for when someone may be struggling with their mental health, strategies for managing the initial support of friends, family and colleagues safely, and information on obtaining immediate assistance if necessary. Can you talk a little bit about what somebody walking out of the standard and youth 14 hour class is really trained or educated to do specifically? What's it not Doesn't teach counselling skills Doesn't teach you to diagnose  It gives you some education around the clusters of symptoms you may notice and helps you potentially identify if someone is in crisis.  ‘'If you've seen major changes (negative changes) in someone's feelings, thinking and behaviour. If it appears to be having an impact on their ability to function, enjoy relationships study etc and it's lasted more than a couple of weeks they need help. ‘'  Often people are scared they'll make things worse or being nosey. It's ok to have these conversations,   Mental Health First Aid, helps you have a plan in place and connect with someone. It's different to being a professional on the treatment side of things   Tips for doing the course Everyone should attend a mental health first aid course Just like everyone should attend a physical first aid course.  It's a different set of skills than what's delivered in the curriculum, so consider doing a course. If you have an interest in mental health, then consider becoming an instructor.   The main courses 12-14 hrs Standard mental health first aid Youth mental health first aid Older persons mental health first aid Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders mental health first aid Despite young people being in such need, they are also the group least likely to seek help for mental health concerns. One of the newest courses is the teenMHFA course, unlike the other courses it's is peer looking out for peers….  could you talk about the research currently underway?     Young people were more likely to go to their peer to seek help and support.  There's lots of research that says lots of young people are providing lots of inappropriate support to each other already. Potentially a risk to their own mental health and can be unhelpful to the person needing the help. The courses cover the minimum amount you'd want young people to know.   Cover suicides and other traditionally difficult topics.  If we can't talk about suicide then it means they can't which means if they're having thoughts of suicide they cant talk to anyone.    The course encouraged them to get an adult to help.   Tips for helping someone who doesn't want help? It may be that you're not the right person You can encourage them to talk to someone else.  They care too much about you and want to hold /save face Culture and gender differences.    You may have to use language that indicates you may not be a good fit. Using inclusive language Eg you may be asking someone about the support they have and say ‘do you have a boyfriend?'  If she's same-sex attracted then she may feel like it's not ok to talk to you about it.    Makes it easier to start the conversation if you use inclusive language.  Some young people hold myths about what help may look like.    Feeling like I have to be stronger than other people They may have incorrect ideas of what help looks like. May think it's acute and you may need to be hospitalised or not part of the community.    May need to do some myth-busting  What treatment looks like may have come from tv and movies   Mental health first aid for tertiary students   Could you tell me more about the creation of Mental health first aid for tertiary students, what sparked this course and how is it different to the standard and youth MHFA.   Tertiary students mhfa course   How to look out for your peers Some of the youth content and peer to peer support.    Do people report learning any tools of techniques that they can apply to themselves to improve their own mental health?   Research has shown improves the mental health of the participants too.   How do you take care of your own mental health? It needs to be something you incorporate it into your life and practice.  Could be nipping a problem in the bud early so it doesn't become a problem Getting exercise Connect and talk with people   Tips for professionals Using supervision and group supervision Helps them remain in their career  Manage burn out Talk to people Take time off when needed   Do you think mental health problems are getting worse?   Claire personally thinks yes. The research is hard to gather around this topic.   Evidence is limited  Anxiety, in particular, is getting more and more common. Family structures changed, social media, bullying on social media. The impact of social media looking at curated lives.    Impact of diet and exercise A sedentary lifestyle can be problematic Poor quality food Good evidence for the   diet    On a more personal note, how have you managed to balance the work you find so valuable the emotional toll of being so immersed in data, statistics and stories of mental distress of others? Does this have an impact on you? How do you take care of yourself?   Claires self-care tips Practice what I preach It's ok to ask for help. It’s interesting to contemplate why Claire Kelly’s colorful and expertly patterned toy-like animals are so appealing, but perhaps more curious to imagine is what theywould see in us. Much of her recent work centers on elephants because of their unique role as a beloved childhood toy, a popular decorative figure with a strong history in glassmaking, and a perilously threatened species.   In work that examines the connections humanity has with animals and our larger relationship to the world, the artist has created a series of fantastic microcosms that bring a consciousness to their decorative status. As a story about the fragility and conservation of these small worlds is told, their role in a grander scheme is revealed.   “We live in a time when our smallest decisions can affect our environment in unpredictable ways. As a conscientious inhabitant, I am constantly weighing my choices and attempting to choose the lesser evil. My works are a gentle mirror allowing us to examine our contradictory world.”   Graduating with a BFA from Alfred University in 1996, Kelly subsequently worked collaboratively with Anthony Schafermeyer from 2000 to 2008 as Schafermeyer/Kelly Glass. In 2008, she moved to Providence, Rhode Island, to assist glass artist Toots Zynsky with her work.  During this time, Kelly developed her own sculptural series integrating traditional Venetian glassblowing and various cold working processes. Greatly influenced by the unconventional forms and patterning of mid-century Venetian Masters such as Napoleone Martinuzzi and Carlo Scarpa as well as contemporary masters Dick Marquis and Zynsky, Kelly works with cane and murrini techniques in a unique exploration of line, pattern, and color.    In spring of 2017, Kelly worked as Artist in Residence at the Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York, where she created a new body of work using specialty 104 COE glass from Effetre, a glass company based in Murano, Italy. The artist has recently been awarded residencies at Salem Art Works Salem, New York, and at the Museum of Glass, Tacoma, Washington, to further her processes and designs.   From October 12 through December 10 new work was exhibited, and Kelly presented a lecture and demonstration at Duncan McClellan Glass Gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida, in a show with friend and hot glass artist Jen Violette titled Vibrant Perspectives. Penland Gallery, Penland, North Carolina, Vetri gallery, Seattle, Washington, and Montague Gallery in San Francisco, California, also represent Kelly’s work.   A self described “unexpected instructor,” Kelly has taught workshops at Penland School of Crafts, Pilchuck Glass School, the Pittsburgh Glass Center, The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the Centro Fundacion del Vidrio in Spain. Her 2019 teaching schedule includes March 4 – 8 at Espace Verre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and March 18 – 22 at the Glass Spot in Richmond, Virginia.

Talking Out Your Glass podcast

In a world of technological excess and social turmoil, one longs to return to the simple goodness of the earth and its bounty. Like a trip to the local farmer’s market, Jen Violette’s cornucopia of glass fruits and vegetables renews in the viewer a connection with the ground we walk upon and the faith that we remain part of a plan that makes life on earth sustainable.   A full-time glass and mixed media artist based in Wilmington, Vermont, Violette is known for her colorful, garden inspired glass sculptures that often incorporate metal and wood. Recreating plant structures with molten glass, the artist has mastered the use of glass powders to mimic the colors and textures found in nature. “Since the growing season is relatively short in Vermont, I enjoy gardening with molten glass to extend my growing season.”   A 27-year hot glass veteran, Violette received her BFA in Glass and Metal Sculpture from Alfred University School of Art & Design, Alfred, New York in 1994. She continued her glass art education through courses at The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG), Corning, New York; the Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington; the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island; the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Deer Isle, Maine; and Penland School of Crafts, Bakersville, North Carolina. Her mentors and inspirations include hot glass royalty such as Lino Tagliapietra, William Morris, Martin Janecky, Dante Marioni, Richard Marquis, the late Pino Signoretto, Randy Walker, Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen, Jasen Johnsen, Stephen Dee Edwards, Fred Tschida, Walter Lieberman, and Brian Pike.   Violette’s work can be found in private collections worldwide and is represented by a number of fine art glass galleries including Schantz Galleries Contemporary Art in Stockbridge, Massachusetts; Vetri Gallery in Seattle, Washington; Raven Gallery in Aspen, Colorado; Sandra Ainsley Gallery in Toronto, Canada; and Montague Gallery in San Francisco, California. Her work can also be found at Duncan McClellan Gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida, where from October 12–14, 2018, the artist will be featured along with glass artist Claire Kelly in a weekend event including glass demos by both artists.   Currently fabricating larger scale installations and glass sculpturesdirectly mounted to the wall, Violette’s aesthetic now includes forest floor imagery with fall leaves and branches. She moves in and out of the seasons, simultaneously creating a spring inspired installation containing fiddlehead ferns and glass trilliums, as well as an homage to summer with black-eyed Susans and sunflowers, and a wall piece featuring large-scale ferns installed at different angles.   Upon her return from the Glass Art Society conference in Murano, Italy, in May2018, Violette will participate in a Vermont Crafts Council Studio Tour held during Memorial Day weekend. During August 6–11 the artist will teach her first class ever, a Creative Glass Sculpting Techniques workshop, at the CMOG Studio.

Singing Lessons For Kids. The What & The Why.

The world is changing, but are our minds changing just as fast? People may think that meditation or mindfulness practice is quite an obscure topic when talking about singing lessons for kids. But what could a more mindful headspace do for children, their creativity, and overall health? Today I speak with Claire Kelly, operations director of the Mindfulness In Schools Project. Aside from immediately relaxing me with her wonderful demeanour, Claire discusses why children may want (or need) to start considering meditation and more specifically, mindfulness practice. We talk about: 2:55 What is mindfulness 5:33 Why do we need mindfulness practice today? 7:38 What is meditation 9:28 What happens with the brain when we meditate? 10:40 Why should kids meditate? 14:25 How to start meditation/mindfulness practice 18:30 how to group teach meditation/mindfulness practice 21:15 How to break the woowoo barrier Website: https://www.stevegilesuk.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/SteveGilesUK | @SteveGilesUK Facebook: https://facebook.com/SteveGilesUK Email: change@stevegilesuk.com
