Mann's impressive military biography includes being a decorated combat veteran; Corpsman; SEAL Special Operations Technician; jungle survival, desert survival, and arctic survival instructor; small arms weapons instructor, foreign weapons instructor, armed and unarmed defense tactics, advanced hand-to-hand combat instructor; and Survival, Evade, Resistance and Escape Instructor; in addition to other credentials. Mann is the author of 22 books including the New York Times Best Selling autobiography Inside SEAL Team SIX: My Life and Missions with America's Elite Warriors. When Osama bin Laden was assassinated, the entire world was fascinated by the men who had completed the seemingly impossible mission that had dogged the U.S. government for over a decade. SEAL Team SIX became synonymous with heroism, duty, and justice. Only a handful of the elite men who make up the SEALs, the U.S. Navy's best and bravest, survive the legendary and grueling selection process that leads to SEAL Team SIX, a group so classified it technically does not even exist. There are no better warriors on earth. Mann knows what it takes to be a brother of these ultra-selective fraternities. As a member of SEAL Team SIX he worked in countless covert operations, operating from land, sea, and air, and facing shootings, decapitations, and stabbings. He was captured by the enemy and lived to tell the tale, and he participated in highly classified missions all over the globe, including Somalia, Panama, El Salvador, Colombia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. As a training coordinator for several civilian SEAL training programs, and as a former Training Officer of SEAL Team SIX, he was directly responsible for shaping the bodies and minds of SEALs who carried out the assassination of Osama bin Laden as well as many other classified missions. But to become a SEAL, Mann had to overcome his own troubled childhood and push his body to its breaking point–and beyond. At the podium and in Inside SEAL Team SIX, he shares a high-octane narrative of physical and mental toughness, giving unprecedented insight to the inner workings of the training and secret missions of the world's most respected and feared combat unit. Don Mann has over 40 years (1,000+ races) worth of competitive racing experience, completed 2 Ironman triathlons in a day and was once ranked 38th in the world as a triathlete. Mann received a Master's in Management from Troy State University, in Troy, AL, a B.S. in International Relations & Criminal Justice, from Florida State University, in Tallahassee, FL, and a B.S. in Liberal Science, from State University of New York. He lives in Cape Charles, VA.

That's right: I said Colorado rye whiskey! One of the most exciting developments in American whiskey making was the recent rediscovery of a forgotten part of our past: the three chamber still. It's completely unlike any other type of still, and it was used by most American rye distillers as recently as 110 years ago. Then it disappeared. But it's back, and I got an interview with the man who revived it, Todd Leopold. I also got a sample of the brand-new 6 year old three chamber rye from Leopold Bros. distillery, and sampled it live with two Penns Valley regulars, Dave Dreese and Rich Gallup. What else? Brewpubs, cocktails, whisky, and great eats on our drive to Denver; reports from the Yorkholo Brewing Carnival of Stouts, and the Hartslog Heritage Festival, and some really big news... The next episode drops in a week! We're doing our first bonus episode, and you'll get the second half of the Todd Leopold interview (with a lot of talk about Maryland rye whiskey, and what Todd's doing next), Kansas City barbecue, some shoreside fun from Cape Charles, VA, and then... Another episode the following week! Get ready for a big Thanksgiving episode, with turkey, pies, drinks, and visits from everyone I interviewed over the past year. It's going to be great! Patty Sepety, a mother of 2 is my guest and she tells her story with the purpose of encouraging your heart to trust God's faithfulness when life is more than you can handle. She shares her journey of walking both of her children through mental illness and their tragic experiences that set that diagnosis into motion. What lengths a mother will go to to get her children the help they need and Patty was no exception. She was blindsided by what happened to her daughter when she was only 10 years old and the fallout constantly challenged Patty's ability to get out ahead of the resulting trauma and mental illness issues that would unfold over time. And I don't remember the time frame in relation to her daughter coming to her about what happened and then her son coming forward but in the midst of meeting her daughter's needs her son, 4 years younger than her daughter, requests to also have professional help like his sister. He receives the professional help and yet he follows through with his thoughts of self-harm and Patty finds herself sitting beside her son's hospital bed looking at the countless pieces of machinery not knowing if he'll live through the night. Patty's journey into uncharted waters hit her from several sides. Along with her children's level of need, her husband would also be diagnosed with a hole in his heart and endure multiple procedures; each one having the potential of take his life. And her aging parents needed her help as well. Just when you think that would be enough, she, herself is diagnosed with PTSD. As our conversation unfolded it became apparent to me that through every phase of her dark valley she never questioned God's faithfulness. One of the things that was thought provoking to me is that she shares how she'd read Job's story and it would comfort her that her life was not as bad as what Job had endured. Now that's one way to put perspective in your life. Patty has the sweetest countenance, you can hear it in her voice. If you think she'd make the sweetest friend, you're right. She has a strong bond with the women that she does life with. I've met the group of women she is connected to. The whole group, not just a percentage of the women, love well. If you're ever on the Eastern Shore in the Cape Charles area of the Virginia side, and you need a kind person to talk to, stop in at Cheriton Church and ask for any one of the women who serve on the WinGS (Women in God's Service) team. I guarantee you, you'll leave feeling like you were loved on by Jesus Himself. Let's listen in to Patty's humble, transparent story of how she navigated mental illness with her children and the uncertainty that life can challenge us with. Connect with Patty: www.MyConciergeLLCVa.com Bio: Patty came from a Christian home where the family attended church wherever they lived. While she and her family were living in Bangkok, Thailand, Patty accepted Jesus and was baptized at age 15. She has been married to David for 50 years and they have two children and two grandchildren. In 2018 Patty and David relocated to the Eastern Shore of Virginia where they love the quiet lifestyle. They currently reside in a 200-year-old, former parish house relocated from Hog Island to Nassawadox, VA.Patty and David are active members of Cheriton Baptist Church where she is on the WinGS committee. WinGS stands for Women in God's Service. Patty is also the business owner of My Concierge LLC, an office consulting and bookkeeping firm. Every couple of months I like to invite a restaurant owner who has benefited from my restaurant coaching program onto podcast. It's a great chance for the restaurant owner to reflect on all the work they've done and the results of their work. It's also a chance for me to take a minute to remind myself in the hustle and bustle of every day that what I teach works. That reinforces my motivation and my why for doing the work I do every day. Today's guest is Jon Dempster. Jon opened his first restaurant, The Shanty, in the rural seaside community of Cape Charles, Virginia. He also has a second restaurant called Dead Rise Italian Kitchen. Prior to opening the restaurant, he spent 15 years traveling the country working his way up in the hospitality business from the dish pit in coastal New England towns to general manager of an independent Italian restaurant in Los Angeles. He also made an awesome noodle stop in Seattle along the way. In this episode of my podcast, The Restaurant Prosperity Formula, Jon shares his passion for the industry and how he maintains his drive to continue learning and growing daily. Jon has a special focus on creating the best culture for his restaurant team and community. Listen to our conversation to hear Jon tell how he went from a restaurant owner already using systems to someone who now understands the why of those systems and how using the why helped him explode his profitability.

In 2009 she was riding with her grandmother, Annette Williams, and noticed a building she had probably passed a hundred times in her lifetime. Learning that the building served as a school for African American children during segregation in Cape Charles, she contacted alumni and town leaders to discuss how the building and history could be preserved. Under her leadership, alumni, former faculty, and friends worked two years later to place a state historic marker at the school, and not soon after, the collection of oral histories commenced. Currently serving as the President of the Cape Charles Rosenwald School Restoration Initiative, Tevya strives to be a bridge between diverse communities and bring them together for a greater cause. Tevya serves as the Director of Planning and Codes Compliance for the City of Williamsburg, VA.

Season 2, Episode 1Guest: Dave McCormack, President, Waukeshaw Development Real-estate developers as a class have a less than stellar reputation across much of the United States. You generally don't become a villainous Hollywood archetype by accident, and it's small-wonder given the countless stories of harmful gentrification where members of marginalized communities are pushed out to make way for a more profitable type of resident. However, many areas left behind by our unequal economic system are in need of some kind of revitalization. The question remains, then: can development be done right? For a new perspective on the issue, Renegade Capital turns to long-time, Virginia-based developer David McCormack on his approach to the practice that attempts to prioritize playing to community strengths.About Dave. With roots in the music world, David McCormack is president of Waukeshaw Development, Inc., a leader in historic tax credit development in many challenging markets across Southside Virginia. He specializes in reuse and revitalization projects, including, the revitalization of a six-block neighborhood in Petersburg, Virginia; the repurposing of historic schools in many Virginia towns and counties, including Bedford, Cape Charles, and Roanoke; and numerous historic warehouses across the state. In the course of his work, David reevaluates the communities and people that have been left behind by mainstream capital, seeking to develop areas by leveraging their pre-existing strengths. Renegade Capital is thankful to David for taking the time to share his strategies for building a community's wealth with our audience.Renegade Capital Tools & TipsA renegade not only listens but acts. We've consolidated a few tips from this episode to help you support local communities.Support local real estate developers who are uplifting smaller communities: Developers need your help when presenting before your local city or county council. If they are proposing a development project that will help your community, either attend the meeting to voice your approval or send a letter of support to the council.Place your cash in a community bank or credit union: One of the easiest ways you can support communities is by moving your money to a community bank or credit union. The institution uses these funds to provide fair loans and financial services to underestimated communities.Contact your elected officials about historic tax credits: Tax credits encourage real estate development in smaller communities. Contact your elected representatives to let them know you support these tax credits because they can support groups often overlooked and underserved.Love the podcast? Unless otherwise noted, all Web addresses mentioned were functional as of 2-4-22.TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of February 7, 2022. This revised episode from December 2019 is part of a series this year of winter-related episodes. SOUND – ~ 5 sec. This week, we feature a feathered Virginia winter-resident mystery sound. Have a listen to the sound for about 10 more seconds, and see if you know a relatively small, dark-colored goose species that migrates from Arctic shores to the mid-Atlantic coast for the winter. And here's a hint: the name rhymes with migrant.SOUNDS - ~10 sec.If you guessed the Brant, you're right! From its summer breeding grounds in northern Canada and Greenland, the Brant travels to wintering areas along the Atlantic from Massachusetts to North Carolina, including coastal Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay region. That's the pathway for eastern sub-populations of the species; westernsub-populations migrate from Arctic parts of Canada and Alaska to the Pacific coastline. One of eight species of geese native to North America, Brant live in a variety of saltwater or estuarine habitats, feeding mostly on a number of kinds of aquatic plants. In their winter habitats along the Atlantic Coast and around the Chesapeake, they prefer areas where they can feed on Eelgrass [Zostera marina]. Wintering Brant will eat various other aquatic plants, too, especially in response to reduced populations of Eelgrass. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, however, Brant are more dependent on a single food type than other geese species, and this dependence can make Brant more vulnerable than other geese to starvation in some years. Regarding Brant winter feeding, the Cornell Lab notes that severe conditions in eastern North America during the winter of 1976 and 1977 kept Brant from traditional winter habitats for several months. As a result, Brant that year moved inland to feed in agricultural fields, suburban lawns, and golf courses, and over 40 years later, eastern Brant still forage inland from New York to Virginia. Thanks to Lang Elliott for permission to use this week's sounds, from the Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs. We close with about 40 seconds of music for Brant and other kinds of geese. Here's “Geese Piece,” by Torrin Hallett, and graduate student at the Yale School of Music. MUSIC - ~43 sec – instrumental.SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment. Physical Description “The adult neck and head are black, except for a broken white crescent on each side of the neck. The bill is black and the eye is brown. The chest and foreback are black, sharply defined against the breast and sides. The back and scapulars are brown with the feathers vaguely tipped with lighter brown. The rump is dusky brown to dusky, with the sides of the rump white. The forebreast and sides are pale ashy-gray, and the feathers of the sides are slightly browner, and broadly tipped with white. The breast, belly and flanks are pale grayish to light grayish-brown. The feet are black, and the tail is black….” Nesting Habitat and Behavior “This species breeds in Arctic North America, Arctic islands, northern Canada, [and] Greenland off- shore islands, river deltas, marshy uplands, and tundra lakes. This species is seldom far from the coast. They use marshy ground, sandy beaches, talus slopes, coastal sedge tundra, lowland coastal tundra just above the high tide line, low islands of tundra lakes and dry inland slopes covered with vegetation, low grass-covered flats dissected by tidal streams, [and] grassy islands and grassy slopes of low mountains near the coast. The nest site is always in the open, on offshore or lake islands, or on low lying land. …The nest cover is low, thick, grass or sedge mat vegetation. They nest in colonies. …The nest is initially a depression formed in soggy earth. Sedges are molded around the scrape and down is later added. …The young are led to tidal flats or pools where they consume quantities of insects as well as grass….” Winter Habitat (of Eastern Sub-populations) “Non-breeding habitat is on the Atlantic Coast from Massachusetts to North Carolina. They are coastal but also occur in lower Chesapeake Bay, the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, Chincoteague Bay, Gargathy Bay, and Accomack County. Most of the time the 8000 that winter in Virginia are concentrated in Back Bay, [other] bays, tidal flats with abundant pondweed growth, mudflats, …lagoons, estuaries, saltmarshes, islands, …marine habitat, and shallow expanses of saltwater. They are most abundant on Chesapeake Bay on the barrier beach side of the bays. They may be in shallow areas of brackish water. They are gregarious, and often form large rafts on open water while feeding and resting. They rest on sandbars, and roost on banks or on water near the feeding grounds.” Diet “This species forages in water, mud, and fields. It immerses the head and neck and grazes or up-ends. This species prefers to feed in bays, shallow plant filled waters on the leeward side of barrier islands, spits, and sandbars and grassy fields. This species feeds at low tide and does not dive. …The juveniles eat insects, grass, larvae, small crustaceans, sedge, marine invertebrates, mosquito larvae, and pondweed. Eelgrass is the primary food, and they have been recently feeding extensively on sea lettuce due to the destruction of eelgrass beds. They may also graze on saltmarsh pastures. Other foods include moss, lichens, algae, sea lettuce, widgeon grass, …sedge, [and other materials]. …Animal foods are taken accidentally and include fish eggs, worms, snails, amphipods, insects, crustaceans, and clams. When saltmarshes and bays freeze over, they will graze on grass planted in yards.” SOURCES Used for Audio Chesapeake Bay Program, “Eelgrass,” online at https://www.chesapeakebay.net/discover/field-guide/entry/eelgrass. The year was 1917, and Booker T. Washington, along with philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, came up with an initiative to help Black children in the segregated South get the education they deserved. They established the Rosenwald school. In less than 20 years, there would be five thousand of these state-of-the-art schools, spread across 15 states. Today, only a few remain, but one of them is still standing on Virginia's Eastern Shore. As part of Another View's look at Black Nonprofits, producer Lisa Godley shares a little history about the Rosenwald School in Cape Charles and the valiant effort that's now underway to restore the historic schoolhouse.

The story of Chesapeake pirates and patriots begins with a land dispute and ends with the untimely death of an oyster dredger at the hands of the Maryland Oyster Navy. On September 8 at noon, Rush Loving Jr., delivered a Banner Lecture entitled "The Well-Dressed Hobo: The Many Wondrous Adventures of a Man Who Loves Trains." America’s railroads have gone through a tumultuous and dramatic era during the past eighty years, and Virginia played a key role through all of it. They were the times of strong, colorful personalities, men like Virginia’s Claytor brothers, Edward Ball, the man who controlled the DuPont Trust and every evening assembled his “likkah-hound” lieutenants for rounds of bourbon and ginger ale, and W. Thomas Rice, a Northern Neck boy like Ball, who ran the Seaboard Coast Line with the iron fist of a general. There, too, were Jack Fishwick of the Norfolk and Western and Furlong Baldwin, who grew up on a plantation near Cape Charles and used an Atlantic Coast Line office car to build a banking empire. Their stories are played on a stage filled with the drama of boardroom struggles and secret deals, all in the romantic setting of railroad locomotive cabs and the old Richmond Times-Dispatch newsroom. All this is told by a man who, from Depression days in Virginia on into the twenty-first century, watched as those dynamic men and others like them saved the nation’s railroads from ruin and then returned them to a new era of glory. A native of Virginia, Rush Loving Jr., began his career as a photo-journalist at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and from 1965 until 1969 he was the paper’s business editor. He also served as an associate editor of Fortune, the chief spokesman of the Office of Management and Budget in the Carter White House, and for twenty years headed a consulting firm serving clients that included many of the nation’s major railroads. He is the author of The Well-Dressed Hobo: The Many Wondrous Adventures of a Man Who Loves Trains.
