If you have a family history of heart disease or other cardiovascular issues, it can seem like the cards are stacked against you. But the reality is, you are not doomed to experience the same health outcomes. According to both Cedars Sinai cardiologist Dr. Norman Lepor, MD, and Dr. Michael Levine, MD, a clinical instructor in the Department of Medicine at the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology at NYU Langone Health, the absolute worst habit for heart health is using tobacco. That includes both smoking and vaping. Cardiologist Dr. Dave Montgomery joins John to explain why.
Anne Biklé and Dave Montgomery are a husband and wife team and authors of the newly released What Your Food Ate and the trilogy: Dirt: the Erosion of Civilizations, the Hidden Half of Nature, and Growing a Revolution. Together, with Anne's lens of biology, and David's lens of geology, they explore the topics of soil, land, and human health. In this episode, we explore all things soil. Starting with an exploration of how many dynamics between organisms above ground feel combative, but life beneath the soil is truly collaborative. Anne and Dave explore nutrient cycles and how nutrition in the form of minerals is liberated from rocks by microbial and fungal life and recycled through time. We also explore how plants and animals (including humans) get their nutrition. Anne and Dave touch on the state of our soils and what it means to have lost around half of our soil organic matter in a short amount of time and what we can do about it. Touched on are ideas around taking a long view, and how we can do that with our own health and land health and how the history of the treatment of soil might teach us a little bit more about looking into the future. We look at not just regenerative agriculture, but also the impacts of chemical and mechanized agriculture. Ultimately, Anne and Dave guide us towards the future and just how much hope and resiliency nature is capable of. Matt and Dara are joined by Vox's Dylan Matthews to talk about the so-called "lab-leak" hypothesis for the origin of SARS-CoV-2, and to contrast it with the zoonotic origin theory. They discuss the potential policy consequences that ought to result if it turns out that either hypothesis is true, and talk a little bit about whether the global standards for virological research need to be revised. Then, some research is examined that casts "Voter ID" laws in a new light, and leads to some very interesting conversation about how the media should confront authentic challenges to American democratic governance. Welcome to episode 162 of the Final Surge Podcast. Every spring the track world watches as high school boys chase the elusive sub-4 minute mile club. This year with the quarantine lockdown that chase looked more elusive than ever. In late May a group of elite runners got together for the Quarantine Clasico. In that race Leo Daschbach unleashed a 56 second last 400 to become the 11th American high school boy to break 4. We talk to Leo's coach Dave Montgomery about his career and that race. 1:10 How did you get started in running? 3:36 Leo ran a 4:44 1600 which is good for a Freshman, but not what points to a sub-4 miler someday. 5:54 With his interactions with other kids Leo seems like such a good kid 6:42 Did he run before he was a Freshman or just soccer? 8:14 Was it the Sophmore year that you really saw the potential? 11:25 Some kids are great at the 800 and some are great at the 5k, not many have the range he does. Is that something you try to develop? 12:30 He had a great cross country season obviously, was there talk of chasing 4 at the time? 14:00 Where is he committed to college? 15:23 At the point it was clear there was not going to be a season did he ever back off? 17:15 During cross at Desert Twilight he was far enough behind Cole with 600 to go I didn't think he had a shot, but he unleashed a kick that was amazing. 19:14 When did the idea for the Quarantine race come about? 21:33 Pick a week 3-4 weeks out, what did a week of training look like? 23:42 Was 10-miles the typical long run? 24:32 Do you run by time or miles? 25:06 Things looked good going into the race, what was your conversation before the race? 27:14 With 250 left to go he is in a group of 3 of the best runners in the country and he just takes off from the group 28:28 Knowing he finished with a 56.6 do you think he could have gone even faster? 29:07 What do you think his ceiling is when he goes off to college? 30:50 What do you think his race will be in college? 32:34 What is your situation right now, how are you dealing with what is going on? As the number of people that are climbing outside continues to explode, there is increasing pressure on land managers and advocacy groups. This often leads either to “active management” (e.g., restrictions on bolts or route development, etc.) or to complete closure. Does this stuff work? Why do we need these types of interventions? How are the ethics and culture of climbing altered or preserved through rules implemented by non-climbers?Furthermore, this trend is picking up steam all across the US. As just one recent example, a handful of Blister Climbing Editor Dave Alie’s local crags in Golden, Colorado have seen dramatic increases in the number of visitors in recent years, causing the County to step in and take a more active management role. So in this episode, we take a close look at how this practice has impacted climbers through the lens of some high profile Front Range crags. We hear from both Eric Kraus, who oversees outdoor recreation for Jefferson County, and Dave Montgomery, who sits on the Fixed Hardware Review Committee that advises the county on climbing related actions.TOPICS & TIMES:Part I - Eric KrausWhat does Eric do with Jefferson County, and what are their goals?
