The musician reflects on the epic evolution of her singing from practical childhood speech therapy to sacred musical fluency.Meg Washington was born in a musical home in Port Moresby, where her parents had met as Australian expats.Meg and her sister spent a lot of their time watching classic Hollywood musicals and also down at the local yacht club where their dad DJ'd every Saturday night.Singing became something Meg was encouraged to do herself after she developed a stutter as a little girl. And eventually it grew from a therapy into a thrill.Meg's stutter was something she did her best to disguise while building her career as a singer and songwriter in Australia. But after going public about her speech impediment in a TedX Talk, Meg realised she no longer cared about hiding who she was. This honesty led to a whole host of exciting new opportunities – including becoming the voice of Calypso in Bluey, and making a film with her husband based on the iconic Paul Kelly song, “How To Make Gravy”.This episode of Conversations explores origin stories, parenting, artists, music-making, Hugo Weaving, reflection, family dynamics, Australian music scene, Christmas movies, motherhood, TedX, Ted Talk, public speaking, speech impediments, speech therapy, Papua New Guinea, PNG, expats, Australian expats, Christianity, religion, spirituality, The Deb, Rebel Wilson, The Killers, Hot Fuss, Batflower Records.
Welcome to another episode of WorkTape, where we continue a nostalgic trip back to 2004, spotlighting the alternative and indie rock albums that defined the era. From The Killers' explosive debut "Hot Fuss" to Modest Mouse's hit-filled "Good News for People Who Love Bad News," we explore how these iconic albums shaped the sound of the mid-2000s. We also dive into the darker (yet still “light”) post-punk sounds of Interpol's "Antics" and the groovy dance-punk beats of Franz Ferdinand's self-titled release. Join us for an engaging discussion on the influential records that still resonate today, 20 years later!Episode Highlights:Is The Killers' “Sam's Town" better than “Hot Fuss? Was "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" Modest Mouse's last good album? How did Interpol's "Antics" differ from their 2002 classic, “Turn on the Bright Lights”?How did Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" define 2000s dance-punk?How did The Strokes' sound influence the alternative and indie landscape of the 2000s?Were UK fans better to Kings of Leon than US fans were?

Hey Struts Life fans! Leah here, bringing you an episode that's sure to hit all the right notes. This week, we're diving into the musical world that shaped our very own Jed. Get ready for an exciting trip down memory lane as Jed opens up about the album that changed everything for him - The Killers' iconic “Hot Fuss.” Released just a month after his 13th birthday, this album became the soundtrack to his teenage years, leaving an indelible mark on his creative journey. We'll talk about the psychological phenomenon of the “reminiscence bump” and why the music we fall in love with as teenagers stays with us forever. You didn't think you'd get a psychology lesson on a rock podcast, did you? But that's not all! Jed shares some personal anecdotes about discovering the magic of The Killers, from secretly figuring out bass lines to reminiscing about the euphoric experience of seeing them live. If you've ever had an album that felt like it was made just for you, you'll want to tune in. We're also chatting about how those early influences continue to shape his music today. So grab your headphones, hit play, and let's explore why “Hot Fuss” holds a special place in Jed's heart. Don't miss out on this fun, nostalgic, and insightful episode. After a brief Sportscast on the media meltdown over Caitlin Clark's early stint in the WNBA (0:30), Steven and Ian have perhaps the least likely conversation in Indiecast history about Ian going to a Sarah McLachlan concert (!) and seeing a fight almost break out (!!) (7:21). They also talk about Steven's upcoming book event on June 11 at Book Soup in LA that Ian is hosting (19:25).From there, they talk about the new album from Texas band Good Looks, Lived Here For A While, which is one of 2024's best indie rock records along with being one of the easiest to root for (22:54). They also talk about Brat, the new album by Charli XCX, as well as a larger conversation about how “indie pop” became known as “middle class pop” (32:54). Finally, they conclude with a discussion of The Killers' Hot Fuss, which turns 20 this week (42:51).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks up the emo band Southtowne Lanes while Steven recommends the Indianapolis band Everything, Now! Anyone who's heard The Killers' "Mr. Brightside" has an almost Pavlovian response to the song's opening lines. It's hard to go anywhere in the world without watching a room or crowd immediately sing along to the synth-rock classic. First released in 2003, the group's unique sound mixed with Brandon Flowers' New Wave vocal delivery helped make this song about jealousy, deception and calling a cab one of the most irresistibly catchy hits in pop history. On this week's episode, hosts Brittany Spanos and Rob Sheffield discuss the story of “Mr. Brightside,” breaking down the song's gargantuan global success. From the Eighties pastiche of Hot Fuss to the song's entry into the pantheon of wedding DJ must-plays, the hosts unpack what it is about this single that has kept it charting in the UK for over 400 weeks. Later in the episode Rob and Brittany are joined by mixing engineer Mark Needham, who was working with members of Fleetwood Mac when he got the call to work with this burgeoning Las Vegas band. Needham was instrumental in developing the band and shares technical details about the recording process, the song's distinctive sound, and anecdotes about working with The Killers during their early days.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On a very specialsode, your hosts discuss the Killer's audience-alienating (and therefore intrinsically interesting) sophomore debut, Sam's Town. Join them as they explore if Uncle Johnny is actually a "cool uncle", morosely remember When You/They Were Young, and debate whether or not they should've just done Hot Fuss instead. Also up for discussion: A conspiracy-riddled web of lies is unraveled as we chart Drake's current beefs, a new flavor is tasted "live and on air", and far too many shows are attended (but at least they all are good). In summer 2004, a hot new group of 20-something anglophiles dropped an album that became an instant classic. That band was the Killers, and the album, Hot Fuss. What inspired its opening track? What did it have to do with the 1986 Central Park "Preppy" murder? Who is the real Jenny? And how many songs were written about her? We've got the deets, this week as we revisit one of the best breakout albums we care to remember. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lyricsforlunch/support

You all know the rock anthems “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told me”, but there is so much more to this album than just the signature hits. It's not confidential and we've got potential so why not join Bill and Tony on another excellent adventure in music?
