Seriously, what did you expect? On this week's Doc Talk podcast, presented by BetFred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka gets open and honest about this year's Nebraska team. Did you really expect Nebraska to give Michigan a better game? Dr. Rob asks you, why did you even think that? According to Dr. Rob, Michigan is the country's 2nd best, if not the best, team.  Also, Memorial Stadium is about to get smaller. Fans are pissed, we get it. However, not doing anything to the stadium would leave Nebraska fans in the past and make the fan experience even worse. Change is hard, but in most, if not all, cases, it is necessary. Make it two wins in a row for Nebraska. The Huskers didn't pull away from Louisiana Tech until last Saturday's fourth quarter, but they did it the old-fashioned way, running the football.  Nebraska rushed 312 yards against the Bulldogs, marking the third straight game with more than 200 yards on the ground. This is Nebraska's first time with 200 rushing yards in three consecutive games since 2018.  It was a 1-2 punch for the Huskers as the defense stopped the Bulldogs run game—a reoccurring theme this year for the blackshirts.  Nebraska held Louisiana Tech to 46 rushing yards and has held each of its four opponents to less than 60 yards. You have to go back to 1999 to find the last time that happened.  So what does all this mean? Well, for how bad the Big 10 West Division teams are playing, The Huskers might be in the mix at the end of the season. A lot has to happen, but as Lloyd Christmas says, "You are telling me there's a chance!" Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss the La Tech game and much more on the latest Doc Talk Podcast presented by BetFred Sports.  Fred is your guy when you want to bet. More Bonuses. More Bets. The Huskers get their first win of the season. Great news for Matt Rhule and the team that could have beaten Minnesota and, because of turnovers, let Colorado run them out of Folsom Field. But there was a development after the win. Nebraska did it with a new quarterback. Because of a Jeff Sims injury, Kearney native Heinrich Haarberg started under center. Haarberg led the team in rushing with 98 yards on 21 carries. His passing numbers are also not bad, 14-24 for 158 yards and two touchdowns. So, does this mean the Huskers have a quarterback controversy three games into the season?  On this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast, presented by BetFred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss the performance of Haarberg and the pros and cons of going back both quarterbacks as the Huskers get ready to take on Louisiana Tech.  Head Coach Matt Rhule has a lot to consider heading into the season's fourth game. The 2023 Nebraska football season is like a broken record. So far, a new Head Coach and coaching staff are producing similar results to those who came before them.  It's not about the losses; it's how the Huskers lose. Turnovers, penalties, and mental mistakes are issues that seem easy to correct but have plagued the program for years.  On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast, former Husker Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss the most recent setback, a 36-14 loss at Colorado.  The Huskers will play their first home game of the season on Saturday; the showdown with Northern Illinois is the first of two straight non-conference home games for the Big Red.  But Dr. Rob and Travis have much more to discuss across college football. Michigan State is again in scandal, this time with Head Coach Mel Tucker. And an Art Briles was sighting at Oklahoma. Briles on the field in Norman has a fan base up in arms, putting Sooners Offensive Coordinator Jeff Lebby in an awkward position as Briles is his father-in-law.  Betfred Sports is the place to make your wagers! Are you starting to wonder if there's a lingering curse over the Huskers? Yet another heart-wrenching loss unfolded last Thursday against Minnesota, and it's becoming increasingly challenging to explain away these close defeats. The Huskers seem stuck in a recurring nightmare – the same problems yielding the same unfortunate outcome. Nebraska's four turnovers paved the way for the Golden Gophers to secure a 13-10 victory, further fueling suspicions of a possible curse. Adding to the mystique, since the commencement of the 2021 season, Nebraska boasts a dismal 2-14 record in one-score games. What's more disheartening is that in five of those 14 losses, the Huskers had a lead in the fourth quarter. In this episode of the Doc Talk Podcast, brought to you by Betfred Sports, join Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice as they dissect the game, delving into the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. Unfortunately, the road ahead doesn't get any smoother for the Huskers. Their next challenge takes them to Colorado this Saturday, where the Buffalos have already made waves. In a surprising turn of events, Colorado clinched a stunning victory against TCU, a team that competed in the National Title Game last season and emerged victorious. The new head coach of Colorado, Deion Sanders, has shown he's unafraid to back up his talk, solidifying his claims with a victorious season opener. While the Buffs showcased their offensive prowess, racking up an impressive 565 yards of total offense, with 510 of those yards coming through the air, there are clear chinks in their armor. Colorado's defense exhibited vulnerabilities, allowing a staggering 42 points and 541 yards to TCU, including 262 yards on the ground. The stage is set for another thrilling showdown, and the Huskers will need to overcome their recent curse to seize victory in Colorado. Betfred Sports has a deal for you heading into the NFL Season. Finally! It's game week. Nebraska kicks off the 2023 season and the Matt Rhule era on Thursday. The game isn't an ordinary start to the season; the game is on a Thursday, a first for the Nebraska football team since 2010.  Matt Rhule is looking to become the first Husker head coach to win his first game since Bo Pelini in 2008. Rhule is the first Husker coach to begin his career with a road game since Bernie Masterson, whose first game was also at Minnesota on Sept. 28, 1946. Oh, and this is not only the season opener and Conference Divisional game game as well.  On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice do a deep dive into the game with the Golden Gophers.  Minnesota Coach P.J. Fleck is replacing a quarterback and one of the country's best running backs from last year's team. He has to do so by facing a rebuilt Nebraska defense running a 3-3-5 attack. Fleck's challenge is the unexpected, as it's hard to prepare for something he's never seen in Nebraska before.  The game isn't the only big news. Last week, President Ted Carter resigned to take the same job at The Ohio State University. What does this mean for the Nebraska Athletic Department? After all, Trev Alberts recently got the chain of command changed so he would directly report to Carter and not the UNL Chancellor.  This podcast talks little about high school football; however, the season kicked off last Friday. There were some alarming final scores and a shockingly bad call on the last play of the Bennington vs. Skutt Catholic game that has people talking. So we'll take some time to talk about it also.  Betfred Sports has an exclusive offer for listeners to the Doc Talk Podcast. Get a 100% risk-free bet up to $50 when you wager on the Nebraska vs. Minnesota game. You can bet the spread, the money line, or the point total. Just use the promo code CORN.  Contact the Betfred direct chat line in the help section of our customer service portal and type that promo code in. You will be recorded by BetFred agents and be eligible. There's no reason to place your Nebraska bets anywhere else than with Betfred Sports.  Legal matters arise for anyone at some point. There's plenty of money to do it and Colorado jumping ship from the PAC-12 might have been the pebble that broke loose to start an all-out avalanche.  Also, with Bud Crawford dominating the boxing world and the Welterweight division, where does the Champ fall on the Mount Rushmore of the greatest athletes ever in Omaha.?  Betfred is THE local book for Eastern Nebraska; drive to Iowa. The concept of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) has now reached its third year of existence. Money is flowing, creating an uneven playing field in college athletics. Let's be honest the playing field was uneven before NIL. Coaches and administrators from SEC (Southeastern Conference) have marched up Capitol Hill, urging for legislative intervention. Meanwhile, the NCAA is attempting to assert its authority by emphasizing that their rules supersede state laws for member schools. Additionally, the IRS has raised concerns about the non-profit status of collectives, recognizing them as pay-for-play entities, potentially jeopardizing their tax-exempt status. In this episode of the Doc Talk podcast, presented by Betfred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice host Connor Orr in their basement studio. Connor, a registered sports agent and partner at the law firm Orr and Horgan in Omaha, offers valuable insights. The future of NIL faces numerous challenges and uncertainties. The past three years have seen significant changes, and it is likely that more changes will follow in the next three years. Our discussion shed light on these issues, revealing that finding solutions to the NIL puzzle, even if they are kept within the collegiate system, requires dedicated effort. We invite you to share your thoughts in the comments section after listening to the podcast. Betfred is THE local book for Eastern Nebraska; drive to Iowa. After listening to this episode of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sports, Huskers fans may be astounded by what they hear.  Iowa Western Community College Head Coach Scott Strohmeier is our guest. Scott is the 2022 Nationa Junior College Coach of the Year. Iowa Western won its second national title under Strohmeir in 14 years. The Reivers have also finished runner-up twice under Strohmeir, the IWCC's only head coach since the program started in 2009.  Nebraska fans may need to remember that Tom Osborne was instrumental in Iowa Western getting a football program. He was a consultant for former IWCC President Dr. Dan Kinney. At the time, many people thought Iowa Western would become a pipeline of players to Lincoln. After all, there are no junior colleges in Nebraska that play football.  However, the story plays out differently. Iowa Western has created a pipeline for sure, just not to Lincoln. You will have to listen to the podcast to get the exact number of Iowa Western Players that have worn the Scarlet and Cream; the number may shock you. For the record, Stohmeier has put over 400 players into D1 Programs over the past 14 years and close to 100 at Power 5 Programs.  Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss his relationship with previous Nebraska coaches with Coach Strohmeier and what he expects moving forward with Matt Ruhle and the new Nebraska staff. They also talk about the critically acclaimed Last Chance U on Netflix and what the transfer portal and NIL mean to the JUCO game.  Betfred is THE local book for Eastern Nebraska; drive to Iowa. Every college football program has its share of stars living off name recognition for generations. Rarely is there a position group that carries the same clout with fans.  At Nebraska, you have three Heisman Trophy Winners and several Outland and Lombardi Trophy winners. Of course, all those winners continue to sign autographs and take photos with fans. But "The Pipeline" seems to evoke the emotions of greatness, dominance, athleticism, nastiness, and championships with Husker fans. Why? Probably because Nebraska has struggled for the last 20 years, and a big reason is average to poor offensive line play. The original "Pipeline" was made up of: Rob Zatechka Zach Wiegert Brendan Stai Aaron Graham Joel Wilks These five will be at the Hail Varsity Club in La Vista on Friday night, April 21, from 6-9 PM. This meet and greet is the night before the Spring Game and is presented by Pipeline Jerkey.  On this episode of the Doc Talk Podcast Presented by BetFred Sports. Dr. Rob and Travis Justice are drinking beer and eating Pipeline Jerky with the Center of the Pipeline, Aaron Graham. Aaron was the lone Junior starter on the 1994 National Championship O-Line and had the luxury of two National Championship rings. So, was the 1995 O-Line really the 1994 backups, as Dr. Rob has said hundreds of times on this podcast?  After Nebraska, Aaron played six years in the NFL and is now living in Gretna and President at National Land Realty. The best part about having Aaron on the podcast, he has all the dirt and funny stories about Dr. Rob!  It's going to be a busy weekend! First, see The Pipeline on Friday night. Then, the Spring Game is on Saturday. Then on Sunday afternoon, come to Kros Strain Brewing in La Vista, as we will be recording the podcast on location! From the fourteenth through the nineteenth centuries Japanese monks created hundreds of maps to construct and locate their place in a Buddhist world. Expansively illustrated with multiple maps and illustrations, The Japanese Buddhist World Map: Religious Vision and the Cartographic Imagination (University of Hawai'i Press, 2021) by D. Max Moerman is the first monograph of its kind to explore the largely unknown archive of Japanese Buddhist world maps and analyze their production, reproduction, and reception. In examining these fascinating sources of visual and material culture, Moerman argues for an alternative history of Japanese Buddhism—one that compels us to recognize the role of the Buddhist geographic imaginary in a culture that encompassed multiple cartographic and cosmological world views. The contents and contexts of Japanese Buddhist world maps reveal the ambivalent and shifting position of Japan in the Buddhist world, its encounter and negotiation with foreign ideas and technologies, and the possibilities for a global history of Buddhism and science. Moerman's visual and intellectual history traces the multiple trajectories of Japanese Buddhist world maps, beginning with the earliest extant Japanese map of the world: a painting by a fourteenth-century Japanese monk charting the cosmology and geography of India and Central Asia based on an account written by a seventh-century Chinese pilgrim-monk. He goes on to discuss the cartographic inclusion and marginal position of Japan, the culture of the copy and the power of replication in Japanese Buddhism, and the transcultural processes of engagement and response to new visions of the world produced by Iberian Christians, Chinese Buddhists, and the Japanese maritime trade. Later chapters explore the transformations in the media and messages of Buddhist cartography in the age of print culture and in intellectual debates during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries over cosmology and epistemology and the polemics of Buddhist science. The Japanese Buddhist World Map offers a wholly innovative picture of Japanese Buddhism that acknowledges the possibility of multiple and heterogeneous modernities and alternative visions of Japan and the world. D. Max Moerman is a Professor in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Cultures at Barnard College of Columbia University. His research interests lie in the visual and material culture of Japanese religions. Shatrunjay Mall is a PhD candidate in the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He works on transnational Asian history, and his dissertation explores intellectual, political, and cultural intersections and affinities that emerged between Indian anti-colonialism and imperial Japan in the twentieth century.
