Jessica Moerman's scientific research has included the study of stalagmites in Bornean caves and digging up ancient lakes in Africa. Through this work, she and other paleoclimatologists—those who study the climate of the past—have started to piece together the puzzle of how earth's climate has changed in the past, which helps us to understand how it could change in the future. For Jessica, science has always been a tool for ministry and for understanding God's creation. That idea has led her to her current role as the CEO of the Evangelical Environmental Network where she is able to share her knowledge of science, her passion for ministry and the call to act to bring about a healthy future.

So it's almost not the reduction that you will have between today and 2050, it's the whole volume of emissions that you will still have on the way to get there. That is gonna be very critical. 181 Mieke Moerman Over Haar Reis Als Dokter Naar Entrepreneur TelePHON | What's On Your Mind? What's On Your Mind ? is een 1 uur conversatie. From the fourteenth through the nineteenth centuries Japanese monks created hundreds of maps to construct and locate their place in a Buddhist world. Expansively illustrated with multiple maps and illustrations, The Japanese Buddhist World Map: Religious Vision and the Cartographic Imagination (University of Hawai'i Press, 2021) by D. Max Moerman is the first monograph of its kind to explore the largely unknown archive of Japanese Buddhist world maps and analyze their production, reproduction, and reception. In examining these fascinating sources of visual and material culture, Moerman argues for an alternative history of Japanese Buddhism—one that compels us to recognize the role of the Buddhist geographic imaginary in a culture that encompassed multiple cartographic and cosmological world views. The contents and contexts of Japanese Buddhist world maps reveal the ambivalent and shifting position of Japan in the Buddhist world, its encounter and negotiation with foreign ideas and technologies, and the possibilities for a global history of Buddhism and science. Moerman's visual and intellectual history traces the multiple trajectories of Japanese Buddhist world maps, beginning with the earliest extant Japanese map of the world: a painting by a fourteenth-century Japanese monk charting the cosmology and geography of India and Central Asia based on an account written by a seventh-century Chinese pilgrim-monk. He goes on to discuss the cartographic inclusion and marginal position of Japan, the culture of the copy and the power of replication in Japanese Buddhism, and the transcultural processes of engagement and response to new visions of the world produced by Iberian Christians, Chinese Buddhists, and the Japanese maritime trade. Later chapters explore the transformations in the media and messages of Buddhist cartography in the age of print culture and in intellectual debates during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries over cosmology and epistemology and the polemics of Buddhist science. The Japanese Buddhist World Map offers a wholly innovative picture of Japanese Buddhism that acknowledges the possibility of multiple and heterogeneous modernities and alternative visions of Japan and the world. D. Max Moerman is a Professor in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Cultures at Barnard College of Columbia University. His research interests lie in the visual and material culture of Japanese religions. Shatrunjay Mall is a PhD candidate in the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He works on transnational Asian history, and his dissertation explores intellectual, political, and cultural intersections and affinities that emerged between Indian anti-colonialism and imperial Japan in the twentieth century.

Genesis 1:26 reveals that God made humanity in His image, and reflecting His nature, for an awesome task and responsibility: to rule responsibly over all He has made. Being good stewards of God’s creation is both a biblical mandate and the historical legacy of the Christian church. In this lecture, Dr. Jessica Moerman of the Evangelical Environmental Network presented on how environmental stewardship is at its heart a discipleship issue and part of our Christian witness, as well as a matter of defending the lives and health of the most vulnerable -- including our children, both born and unborn. She will also separate fact from fiction on the science of climate change and the role of human activity on today’s global warming. Lecture will be followed by discussion with Dr. Moerman, John Hart and David Bond of C3 Solutions.Support the show (http://www.faithandlaw.org/donate)

In this special Telstra Connected Cycling webinar we are joined by Belgian cycling legend Bernard Moerman and Professor Jamie Anderson to talk about the theme of transitions. We explore why so many professional cyclists struggle with transitioning to a life after the peloton. On the flipside, we also talk about how a bunch of former Australian professional cyclists have found their way into influential positions in the European cycling scene. In the last part of the interview we chat about the phenomenon of “Corporate Athletes” who throw themselves back into competitive sport after a long hiatus – and why doing so can help people to thrive in so many aspects of their lives. Based in Belgium, Bernard Moerman is a leadership mentor, career coach and storyteller who helps people to realise their inner potential. Prior to shifting his focus to working with business leaders, he spent more than two decades as a talent scout & manager, performance coach and Professional Cycling Team Director. See Bernard's recent TED Talk here: https://youtu.be/p68eKVnu5_w Jamie Anderson is Professor of Leadership & Strategic Management at Antwerp Management School, an executive coach and mentor to many former professional cyclists. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.25.285619v1?rss=1 Authors: Zhang, W., Claesen, M., Moerman, T., Groseclose, M. R., Waelkens, E., De Moor, B., Verbeeck, N. Abstract: Computational analysis is crucial to capitalize on the wealth of spatio-molecular information generated by mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) experiments. Currently, the spatial information available in MSI data is often under-utilized, due to the challenges of in-depth spatial pattern extraction. The advent of deep learning has greatly facilitated such complex spatial analysis. In this work, we use a pre-trained neural network to extract high-level features from ion images in MSI data, and test whether this improves downstream data analysis. The resulting neural network interpretation of ion images, coined neural ion images, are used to cluster ion images based on spatial expressions. We evaluate the impact of neural ion images on two ion image clustering pipelines, namely DBSCAN clustering, combined with UMAP-based dimensionality reduction, and k-means clustering. In both pipelines, we compare regular and neural ion images from two different MSI datasets. All tested pipelines could extract underlying spatial patterns, but the neural network-based pipelines provided better assignment of ion images, with more fine-grained clusters, and greater consistency in the spatial structures assigned to individual clusters. Additionally, we introduce the Relative Isotope Ratio metric to quantitatively evaluate clustering quality. The resulting scores show that isotopical m/z values are more often clustered together in the neural network-based pipeline, indicating improved clustering outcomes. The usefulness of neural ion images extends beyond clustering towards a generic framework to incorporate spatial information into any MSI-focused machine learning pipeline, both supervised and unsupervised.
