In episode 210, Prep Dish founder Allison Schaaf reviews some of her favorite classic planners that she's used over the years to manage family, work, and personal goals. Allison has used and enjoyed several different types of paper planners to help her keep track of important details and work through longer-term achievements. Why switch through multiple planners over the years even when she finds one she enjoys? Allison can't resist trying something new and mixing up her planning routine! Different planners each offer a unique approach and have features that work best for the variety of life stages Allison has found herself in. Allison's recommended classic paper planners include: Day Designer https://daydesigner.com/collections/shop-all-flagship - An ideal smaller portable size Sol Planner https://solplanners.com/products/2024-sol-planner - Great for when there's a baby in the house to track all of the details. The bigger size worked well for all the daily notes and when Allison was home more. Full Focus Planner https://fullfocusstore.com/collections/planners - Allison used this planner daily when work was her main focus. Pages are purchased and updated quarterly. Cons were that many tasks needed to be copied over and Allison didn't care for the daily pages setup. Pros were that the planning and project pages worked well. Golden Coil Planner https://www.goldencoil.com/ - A beautiful, aesthetically pleasing planner. This planner is highly customizable, which is a fun way to personalize the planner, but so many choices could be overwhelming. Has a weekly calendar “at-a-glance” style. BestSelf Planner https://bestself.co/products/self-planner - An undated 6-month, week-to-week style planner that also includes daily pages and top 3 tasks to complete. Allison liked not having to transfer anything over, the option to write out notes for the week, and monthly reflection questions. This planner is not customizable and isn't as aesthetic in style. My guest this week is the incredible Whitney English. She believes that anyone can live a beautiful life. She believes that gratitude is the birth place of joy, that people matter, that love is the answer and that if you're real, you can't be ugly. Whitney has bootstrapped two businesses to seven figures, has a degree in interior design, has studied management at Parson's in New York City and has had her work featured in O Magazine, the Wall Street Journal and the Today Show. Her new book, A More Beautiful Life: A Simple Five-Step Approach to Living Balanced Goals with HEART, was just released and it is incredible. 4:29 – Whitney 101 Whitney moved to Dallas to start her career as an interior designer, and then 9/11 happened and the job market dried up. She moved back home with her parents and started her own business. Later, she created a planner and it took off. People loved it. 12:10 – Rock bottom Years ago, when Whitney was struggling with her business and her marriage, she wanted out and realized she was at rock bottom. She found out there are some beautiful things at rock bottom and it has a firm foundation. 15:35 – Avoiding pain Whitney is an enneagram 7, which means she tries to avoid pain. One way she avoids pain is by chasing ideas. 17:40 – Self-discipline There's only one way to build self-discipline in your life. Practice doing the things you don't want to do. 20:11 – Pursuing needs What if we just pursued our needs as our goals, and then let the wants kind of happen? When Whitney had a bad day recently, she decided to take a walk, drink water and eat a salad to reset herself. 30:44 – Neglecting needs Whitney noticed that she was neglecting her own needs and had to work on liking herself. 43:14 – Unique gifts You're not using your gifts to the best of your ability if you haven't taken care of all the other not-fun needs first. 47:08 – Get to know you Guilty pleasure? Fancy cocktails, beer or wine If she had to do another job? Something with textile design FEATURED QUOTES I'm not using my gifts to the best of my ability if I haven't taken care of all these other not fun needs first. We all have excuses. We all have that inner voice that we allow to discourage us.What do we do about it? How do we combat excuses and move forward in freedom to accomplish our goals?Becky & Patricia talk about the importance of knowing your why, because when you know your why you will know what to do. Then once you know what to do, you can figure out how you will do it.An important question to ask as you look at habits you would like to change: "Is this serving me?" If your habit is not serving you or you always find yourself caving to the same excuse, create a plan that will serve you and help you reach your goals, then build in some accountability. To combat excuses, you need to:- know your why- have a plan- have accountability- have a time tableIn her Highlight Reel, Patricia talks about her new Day Designer. Then Becky shares about a time she fell in the lake trying to get out of her kayak in her blooper reel.

ADVERTISERS WANT TO FUCK YOU UP. According to Jaleesa Charissa, a beauty and lifestyle blog, 52% of Americans engage in retail therapy to improve their mood.Every month, more than 500 people tweet about how they wish retail therapy was covered by their health insurance. What are the triggers? The “high” of spending or having new things “Retail therapy” aka you sad Maintaining your “image” The need to feel “powerful” aka in-control You shop when you’re bored http://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-news/8-emotional-spending-triggers-1580.php How to get your spending in checkSet (and stick to) a budget Carry cash instead of plastic No-spending challenges Enlist the help of a friend to monitor your spending Don’t let your browser save your credit card. Literally that’s it that’s all that matters Also Chris Hemsworth and Gal Gadot both agree Wonder Woman could totally take Thor in a fight. Same. Dear HBIC I’m 22 and I don’t have a credit card. I feel like I need to do something to build my credit, but my parents think getting a credit card is a mistake. What’s a good way to start building up my credit history and start being more financially independent? You're an adult, sooo you don't exactly need your parents' permission. Our advice would just be to get a credit card, but if you really want to respect your parents' wishes, you have a few options for building credit. Buy furniture (but make sure the furniture store reports to the credit bureau) and pay it off. Ask your parents to co-sign on a car (again, make sure they report) or a loan. Start paying off your student loans. Get a secured credit card. Your parents can load the money on there (like $200) and just use it for things like gas and eating out. Boss/Adulting Moment Meleah: Got my new job title finalized with my boss. It’s very exciting but I’m not 100% sure I’m allowed to tell y’all yet. Stay tuned. Elise: I made the switch to Day Designer and I am more organized than ever. Literally obsessed. I’ve thought about posting pictures but I don’t want to like “glorify busy” or w/e. Subscribe to EVEsdropping on iTunes and Podbean, and use our hashtag #JustEVEsdropping on Twitter to sound off. And don’t forget to send in your Dear HBIC questions to hitusup@earnspendlive.com!

I had the distinct pleasure of getting to spend some time with the founder of the highly acclaimed “The Day Designer” on this episode of Live Your Dance. What I love about this episode is that not only does Whitney share some very useful tips for many stages of business, but she also shares with us some counter-intuitive advice (i.e. don’t follow your passion, follow your strengths). She’s a quality thinker, and an ever-active doer. And I found out the impetus for all of her success: starting each endeavor with gratitude. We dove deeper into to the subject, and she got real and raw with me as we learned more about her story and some of her challenges along the way. This episode is for anyone on the cusp of starting a business, or anyone looking to improve your “business,” whatever that may be. Tune in, subscribe, leave a review and tell your friends and their friends!
Whitney English is business’s best combination: inventor, investor & entrepreneur. At age 22, she used her earnings from babysitting to start a wholesale stationery company for ten years. Unfortunately, the business failed and she was back to living at home in her parents’ house. Instead of using her time to grieve the death of her business, she used her ingenious skills to come up with the solution to every working woman’s chaotic day, The Day Designer. Anything that is not the truth is not sustainable.” “There is a fine line between logic and fear… There are other things that fear steps in and says we can’t do, that we really could do if we put our minds to it. I think that holds some people back and it’s a mindset of ‘she can do it and I can’t. That’s fear talking.” “I need to be so focused on surrounding myself with mentally healthy people: who are humble, smart, making a difference in this world, because those are things I want to do.” “I love organization, that’s a natural love, but naturally being organized is really hard for me.” “It’s a process that became very personal to me. It wasn’t like we picked up a similar planner on the market and said ‘okay we are just going to put a day designer planner brand on top of this and re-do it. It was from the ground up, something that came from my heart.” “We all have different strengths as entrepreneurs, but when you are in that start up mode, you have to prepare for obstacles.” “The best way to get an energy boost is drink a cup of coffee, nap, before the coffee kicks in, 20 minutes, and then wake up and keep going.” [Connect with Whitney: Twitter (@WhitneyEnglish), Instagram (@whitneyenglish) Pinterest (daydesigner), Website: daydesigner.com, whitneyenglish.com] RESOURCES: InDesign Mindset by Carol Dweck Rising Strong by Brené Brown A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller Blue Ocean Strategy by W.
