In this episode, I talk with Whitney English—author, designer, and (as I like to call her) my organizational better half. Her new book, Organize First, Decorate Second, isn't your typical organizing manual. It's thoughtful, deeply personal, and grounded in real life—something I immediately connected with.We explore the idea that our homes are not just reflections of who we are, but tools that help shape us. Whitney shares why she prefers the word edit over declutter, how tension (not balance) is her guiding principle, and why you should think twice before buying drawer dividers. We also get into how new urbanism and walkable cities inspired her approach to home design, why she gave up on making her bed, and how organization can actually free up space for beauty and joy—not get in the way of it.If you've ever struggled with keeping things tidy, if you love your stuff but want it to serve you better, or if you just want permission to let go of what's not working, this conversation will feel like a deep breath. Whitney English is a designer, author, entrepreneur, and someone who can help us both declutter and beautify without turning to strong drink. Huzzah! Whitney's new book is called Organize First, Decorate Second, and I think you'll love hearing about how she can help you bring order and beauty from nuttiness. I read Whitney's book on a series of flights, and by about a third of the way through, I was ready to parachute out and get to my house to go through all my drawers and closets and rooms. I so appreciate practical advice and tools of how to make life and spaces more beautiful while human beings still live here. Kudos to Whitney for helping us make that happen.Whitney English believes that anyone can live a beautiful life. She believes that gratitude is the birthplace of joy, that people matter, that love is the answer, that if you're real you can't be ugly, that everyone is creative and some of us have just forgotten, and that it's worth trying to be a better version of yourself today than you were yesterday. She has boot-strapped two businesses to seven figures, has a degree in interior design, studied management at Parsons in New York City, and has had her work featured in O magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and on the Today Show (twice). As single parents were juggling a lot of balls in the air at the same time… Inevitably, we drop one or two. Most of the time, the proverbial ball we drop is the one with ‘me' written on it. We put ourselves last; we don't value ourselves enough. We tend to feel selfish in making ourselves a priority when we have so many responsibilities. So how do we move ourselves up the totem pole, so to speak? I think we all know that unless we care well for ourselves, we can't care well for other people. So what can we do to nurture ourselves without adding more stress and ‘to dos' to our already full list of responsibilities? There is so much confusion around nutrition as adults and when it comes to feeding our kids, it can be even more anxiety-provoking! We worry about nutrients, growth and development, if our kids are eating too much of this… or not enough of that. For many families, mealtime can be stressful. But it doesn't have to be that way! This episode originally aired on May 10, 2021. This previously published episode is a favorite for mom and kid wellness. Whitney English is a registered dietitian, nutritionist, certified personal trainer, and a mama of two little ones (ages 6 months and 2 years). She's the creator of the media platform Whitney E. RD, where she serves up the scoop on food and fitness trends, and co-creator of Plant-Based Juniors, an online destination for all parents looking to get more plants on the plate. Whitney earned her master's degree in Nutrition, Healthspan, and Longevity and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Southern California's Norris Cancer Center and Keck Medical Center as well as BreatheHealing Life Center. Her experience working in cancer research fueled her curiosity for using food and fitness to promote lasting health and helped shape her Predominantly Plant-Based philosophy. Whitney also is the co-author of The Plant-Based Baby and Toddler coming out next Tuesday, May 18th! They're offering some great pre-order bonuses so head over the link below for more info. In this episode, Whitney debunks some of the top myths surrounding plant-based eating using her evidence-based research while sharing strategies on how to get your babies, toddlers and kids to eat a predominantly plant-based diet. She also talks about plant-based nutrition during pregnancy and shared insight into the 3-day water fast she completed (pre-pregnancy and breastfeeding) to help with cell regeneration (aka autophagy) and longevity. Even if you're an omnivore (or recovering paleo eater) like myself, her tips helped inspire me to find ways to get more veggies into my kids meals and have piqued my interest in the studies behind fasting and longevity. So whether or not you are plant-based curious or wondering how to get your kids to eat more greens, listen in! We keep the Mother’s Day celebration going with two of the up-and-coming broc-stars, The Plant-Based Juniors, Whitney English and Alexandra Caspero. Together, these two have created a robust community and a haven of support for raising healthy plant-strong babies and toddlers. In fact, their new book, The Plant-Based Baby and Toddler is coming out on May 18th, 2021 and it is the topic of much of the discussion in today’s episode. The PBJs are packed with knowledge, research, and enthusiasm for providing such accurate and evidence-based information because, as we know, there is just so much misinformation out there. They cut through the noise with a refreshing and welcoming vibe that we love here at PlantStrong. Both Alex and Whitney are Registered Dietitians, Certified Personal Trainers, and Moms to toddlers, so they are, of course, personally invested in the health of not just your children, but theirs as well. Even if you’re not a parent, we encourage you to share this episode with those who are. They are a wonderful source for encouragement and affirmation that shines a light on the fact that raising plant-based babies and toddlers is not only safe, but it’s also health-promoting. We cover so many issues that new parents face, especially the many fears and misconceptions of raising plant-strong babies. We also talk about how to have productive conversations with your children and with the naysayers who express their concerns about your parenting choices. We dive into soy, gluten, the whole grain paradox...and making sure your child gets plenty of Vitamin P. What in the world is Vitamin P? You’ll find out and, believe us, you don’t want to live without it. Whitney earned her master’s degree in Nutrition, Healthspan, and Longevity and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Southern California’s Norris Cancer Center and Keck Medical Center as well as BreatheHealing Life Center. Her experience working in cancer research fueled her curiosity for using food and fitness to promote lasting health and helped shape her Predominantly Plant-Based philosophy. Whitney also is the co-author of The Plant-Based Baby and Toddler coming out next Tuesday, May 18th! They’re offering some great pre-order bonuses so head over the link below for more info. Even if you’re an omnivore (or recovering paleo eater) like myself, her tips helped inspire me to find ways to get more veggies into my kids meals and have piqued my interest in the studies behind fasting and longevity. So whether or not you are plant-based curious or wondering how to get your kids to eat more greens, listen in! Catch up a bit with the ladies as they share ALL THINGS GOOD despite a pandemic turning the school year upside down, health struggles, and dueling hurricanes in the Gulf! It’s 2020, y’all! What else would you expect? Listen in to part one of a two-week conversation about parenting struggles with teens and tweens. Do you get involved? Do you offer advice? Do you bite the kid who’s bullying your kid…or someone else’s kid? We’ll be back next week with more of our discussion and more of your comments and advice, too! What are we loving in the midst of the crazy? Johnna’s loving the new podcast “Nice White Parents” (Laura is, too!). They are also recommending “The Piketon Massacre” and “The Orange Tree,” if you’re into true crime. Johnna’s also finding more rest at night with these melatonin gummies. Laura’s heart is full after a quick trip last week to north Mississippi to see dear friends, and she has also found help for her curly hair with a new “fancy” hair dryer. If you’d like to help with the recovery in the areas of Haiti and the Dominican Republic where Laura worked for several years and Tropical Storm Laura caused massive destruction, donate directly to Hispaniola Mountain Ministries here. If you’re looking for the amazing medical journals and resources we mentioned by Johna Jenkins published by Whitney English, you can find them here.
Alex and Shane reflect on Week 3 of quarantine, and how it was both the best and the worst. They address anti-teachers rants on social media, and explain the distinction between “working from home” and “working through a crisis.” Shane devises a scheme for Alex to get 10,000 followers, using “basic” pregnancy blog tactics. Psychotherapist Jessica Warnock joins to talk about coping with anxiety and stress during an international crisis; she gives advice on coping strategies, and the importance of finding meaning in all of this. Whitney English of @plantbasedjuniors discusses what vitamins and nutrients we might be lacking as our grocery shopping and eating habits change in quarantine, and the best ways to get them in our diet. New mothers Kristen and Heidi tell us their insightful and cautionary birth story: Kristen gave birth during the coronavirus outbreak in Georgia, USA, and were separated from their newborn daughter for a week. Stay safe, and enjoy!

Episode 15: In this episode, we talk with our friend, Whitney English. She’s the founder of the best planners ever, Day Designer, an entrepreneur, a mom, a wife, and a friend that’s always down for an adventure. We talk setting goals, how to find inspiration, which celebrities we’d get pedicures with, and much more! Don’t miss it.
This episode is a quick recap of my chat with Whitney English of Episode 8.0. Her words were so inspiring, and here are some of the things that have been on my heart since we talked: + Speaking our shame out loud is so much better than letting it burrow down deep inside of us. So far, this is the only way I have come up with to stop the meanie monsters from sounding true, and it really does prevent them from clouding out the beautiful reality we're actually meant to believe. + I was intrigued by this concept of coming up with a vision for what you want your marriage to look like down the road. Whether it's a year from now or 50 years from now, I love the idea that especially once we get past many of the big milestones that wives typically look forward to, this could be one of the things that helps us aim for Great Love when things get strained or even just stagnant. Don't forget that I LOVE it when you say hello on social media while you listen: I'm @styleandpepper on all the channels and it makes my whole day to know when you're tuning in! Make sure you're subscribed to the feed wherever you listen to your favorite shows, and If you're enjoying the series, please leave a 5-star review and share this podcast with a wife that you love! Whitney English and Jessie Pepper chat about everything from awkward halloween costumes to honest conversations about commitment. early bird specials. how to work your parents for a free dinner. In this episode you'll hear us talk about: Making your man work for it. Whitney led her husband David on a hot pursuit for her hand in marriage. He almost let her get away, and the potential regret was what finally made him get serious. Letting your past impact the present. Things we have said and heard and done are what lay the foundation for our current decisions. Scheduling woes. Being intentional about where you spend your time is a futile effort if you're constantly double booking things that conflict with your partner's calendar. Considering the disparity between how much each person prioritizes this part of their life can be helpful. Personal growth amidst a partnership. When one spouse is constantly seeking self-improvement, it can sometimes cause the other to feel stubborn and defensive. Once the person continues to see benefits within your own life, they are often more open to the idea of optimizing their own. Embracing imperfect. Whitney was inspired to explore this idea during her time at the OnSite workshop experience. Her journey continued while reading The Birth Order Book. Being a perfectionist might be tough for a perfectionist to admit… because it would mean acknowledging that they are indeed, less than perfect. Two more books on this topic that Whitney recommends: When Your Best Isn't Good Enough + The Now Habit. How to get through a week of epic business failure. David stepped up to the plate by working three jobs, and Whitney started scraping together ways to make money with every chance she had. Learning to live within very modest means helped them budget consciously, and they still love to let their parents take them to dinner as a way to save money. Reserving enough energy for your partner. Be quick to say “no” unless you're positive that it's something that will serve the relationship or the family. Having a great support team helps in terms of delegating your duties to make enough time for each other. Taking the time to be together (away from real life and responsibilities) can be a game changer. Anticipation is often the best part of any event. Whether it's sex or sushi-dinners at the restaurant down the street, our chance to look forward to something special can make what ever it is feel THAT much more exciting. Tune into the Marriage is Funny episodes about sex here and here. Marriage vision-boarding. When we pass the big milestones that most wives look forward to, it's helpful to have a goal of something to aim for when the relationship gets strained or stagnant. Ask yourself: What do you want your marriage to look like and what is it going to take to get there? Strengths + weaknesses. Your goal as a spouse should be to minimize each other's weaknesses and maximize each other's strengths. Whitney says: “Great Love is making sure that we show our kids that love can be a blast. David and I are on a mission to make that real within our family.” Find out more about Whitney by connecting with her online!Insta: @whitneyenglish + @thedaydesignerTwitter: @whitneyenglishFb: The Day Designer
The Peppers may share a keen love of personal style, but they still enjoy the chance to kick off their shoes and let loose. Gerard admits that he's starting to feel the Birkenstock-burn, and Jessie is hoping that their summer will be full of bike riding and brunch. It's time to save-the-date for our next Great Love Getaway! We're heading to Puerto Vallarta in October 2016, and we'd love to have you join us. You asked for t-shirts and we did our best to deliver some swag... Three cool styles, now available for our gangster buddies UNTIL FRIDAY JUNE 10th! QUICK BITES: Gerard's current footwear of choice was inspired by everyone's favorite old man from Brooklyn. Jessie publicly declares her newfound love of turtlenecks right here. Check out Gerard's Guy Style column if you're looking for some dude-friendly fashion advice. If you're curious about what Jessie does with her wardrobe cast-offs, you can take a peek at her Poshmark closet (and help support our sailing fund at the same time). Gerard has to pick between sailing lessons or new boat shoes, and we bet you can guess what he happens to choose. Jessie's new podcast project is called The Perfect Wife.me because the perfect wife is not... her. (Duh.) Listen in for interviews with women like Jess Connolly, Erin Loechner, Whitney English + more! The Peppers are hoping to snap more blog photos and write more jokes this summer. Listen to another convo we had about the challenges of podcasting (and fighting) right from Episode 17 in Season One. Graeme in Seattle was surprised by our blow-up confession from Episode 25. It's sad to say that this was not an isolated incident. The Peppers have tried to link up for a shared project before, but the burned sweet potato fries made the efforts feel futile. (Tune in to Episode 11 for the full story.) TRIGGER QUESTIONS: What is the one trend that you most regret wearing? Have you ever felt physically or mentally uncomfortable because of something that you had on? When it comes to bike rides, are you more motivated by the calorie burn or the chance of a swanky brunch at the end?
I had the distinct pleasure of getting to spend some time with the founder of the highly acclaimed “The Day Designer” on this episode of Live Your Dance. What I love about this episode is that not only does Whitney share some very useful tips for many stages of business, but she also shares with us some counter-intuitive advice (i.e. don’t follow your passion, follow your strengths). She’s a quality thinker, and an ever-active doer. And I found out the impetus for all of her success: starting each endeavor with gratitude. We dove deeper into to the subject, and she got real and raw with me as we learned more about her story and some of her challenges along the way. This episode is for anyone on the cusp of starting a business, or anyone looking to improve your “business,” whatever that may be. Tune in, subscribe, leave a review and tell your friends and their friends!
Whitney English is business’s best combination: inventor, investor & entrepreneur. At age 22, she used her earnings from babysitting to start a wholesale stationery company for ten years. Unfortunately, the business failed and she was back to living at home in her parents’ house. Instead of using her time to grieve the death of her business, she used her ingenious skills to come up with the solution to every working woman’s chaotic day, The Day Designer. Anything that is not the truth is not sustainable.” “There is a fine line between logic and fear… There are other things that fear steps in and says we can’t do, that we really could do if we put our minds to it. I think that holds some people back and it’s a mindset of ‘she can do it and I can’t. That’s fear talking.” “I need to be so focused on surrounding myself with mentally healthy people: who are humble, smart, making a difference in this world, because those are things I want to do.” “I love organization, that’s a natural love, but naturally being organized is really hard for me.” “It’s a process that became very personal to me. It wasn’t like we picked up a similar planner on the market and said ‘okay we are just going to put a day designer planner brand on top of this and re-do it. It was from the ground up, something that came from my heart.” “We all have different strengths as entrepreneurs, but when you are in that start up mode, you have to prepare for obstacles.” “The best way to get an energy boost is drink a cup of coffee, nap, before the coffee kicks in, 20 minutes, and then wake up and keep going.” [Connect with Whitney: Twitter (@WhitneyEnglish), Instagram (@whitneyenglish) Pinterest (daydesigner), Website: daydesigner.com, whitneyenglish.com] RESOURCES: InDesign Mindset by Carol Dweck Rising Strong by Brené Brown A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller Blue Ocean Strategy by W.
