Joining the Misfits tonight is Rachel Topelius of ANXO Cidery and Brightwood Pizza & Bottle. Here is a little bit About Rachel:-I have my masters degree in both social work and public health; I had a totally different life path before restaurant life but I fell in love with the service industry and decided this was my community that I could practice social work in my own way. I am very passionate about substance abuse in the service industry, sexual and physical harassment issues, and the overall unhealthy environment that is presented as "well that's just restaurant life" when it doesn't have to be that way. I did my thesis in public health on a new framework to understand the primary factors that lead to substance abuse in the service industry.-I worked as a "reproductive health counselor" aka abortion counselor at Planned Parenthood in Missouri when I was 21 while finish my MSW. Slowly but surely, our favorite annual beer events of the past are making a comeback after taking a pandemic pause. What are we especially excited about? Savor. Savor is an experience for beer lovers and foodies that pairs flavor-forward, independent craft beer with small-plated culinary delights. Jake sits down with Bill Butcher of Port City Brewing to get the story behind Savor and hear why it's so worth attending this year. Bill is also a member of the Brewers Association and dives into where craft beer currently stands with local legislation and how possible it is to put on more unique regional beer events across the country. In other news, the gang shares beer releases from 3 Stars, favorite beers they've been trying from Hellbender and Streetcar 82, an upcoming event with the DC Abortion Fund (DCAF), and MANY anniversary celebrations coming up at Union, City State, and Old Ox. One of these anniversary celebrations may or may not include a special appearance by Fred Armisen. Keep up to date with everything happening at DCBeer.com, @DCBeer on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Email us at beershow@dcbeer.com.Breweries, distilleries, restaurants, and others who want us to announce new releases can provide that information at DC.beer/releases.DC Beer now has great branded gear for you!

We're back! 2020 is almost over and the silver lining of a coronavirus-less world is close, aside from that Washington D.C. sports are about to be back in full swing. The Washington Football Team earned a statement victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Wizards exchanged John Wall for Russell Westbrook. Chip Brierre catches up with Pete Hailey (1:17) and Chase Hughes (27:22) of NBC Sports Washington, covering the Football Team and Wizards respectively, with his usual glass half full of spirits.

A podcast by KOFF - The Swiss Platform for Peacebuilding, DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance, Paxion. This podcast brings together local and international perspectives from different areas (research, psychosocial support, exemplary initiatives) to discuss the relevance of the peace-migration nexus for peace policy and practice. What are the linkages between security, peace and migration? How do security approaches in migration governance affect peace(building)? By focusing the relevance of security sector governance as a sub-aspect of migration governance, we jointly explore what characterizes the security needed in situations of displacement and examine its relevance to peace. Moreover, we present and apply two recent publications concerning the nexus: The “Toolbox – addressing migration in peace policy and practice” by KOFF/swisspeace, and the policy paper “The security sector governance-migration nexus: strengthening SSG for the benefits of migrants and migration governance” commissioned by DCAF. Featuring: Joëlle Gehrig, actress and moderator, finance officer at swisspeace; Carmela Bühler, deputy head of the migration foreign policy section in the human security division at the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs; Emine Sariaslan, social education worker with a focus on integration, participation and social support for families, board member of Paxion; Dr. Sarah Wolff, director of the Center for European Research at the Queen Mary University in London. Contributions to the Geneva Peace Week 2020 Digital Series do not necessarily represent the views of the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform, its partners, or the partners of Geneva Peace Week.

This time, we talked to national and local organizers about the fight for reproductive freedom and the access to abortion services. First, we chatted with Travis Ballie, a national organizer focusing on the Mid-Atlantic region with NARAL Pro-Choice America. Then, we brought things down to the local level by highlighting the good work done by the DC Abortion Fund (DCAF). Dee Srivastava and Emily Crofoot explain how DCAF helps women in need to afford abortion coverage in the DC area, and why their work is so important to the communities they serve. Stay up to date with DCAF by following them on Facebook and Twitter. In between, we featured the great song “Heir to Nothing” from local band Coup Sauvage & the Snips, who unfortunately held their last show in June. You can still find them on Facebook and Twitter, and can still buy their art on Bandcamp! Call to Action We have two simple calls to action for you this time: Donate to DCAF, and if you’re able set up a recurring donation. The recurring donation helps the group budget and accurately identify the number of abortion service grants they will be able to provide in a given year. They are 100% volunteer run, so every dollar sent their way goes directly into providing care to a woman in need. If you’re looking to get involved in the Virginia elections this summer and fall, NARAL has you covered! Get a head start by joining their monthly action on Tuesday, July 25 to phone bank for Gubernatorial candidate Ralph Northam, a strong champion for women’s health and abortion access. You can sign up to volunteer for NARAL Pro-Choice America and follow the NARAL Virginia Chapter at NARALVA.org and on Facebook and Twitter for more updates!
