It may seem taboo today, but before, monarchs will do anything -- and we mean, anything -- to preserve their power and one of the ways they did this was to marry within the family. The act is called consanguinity where biological relatives marry each other is a foolproof plan to destruction. Inbreeding can lead to diseases and deformities throughout history, monarchs who are produced in inbreeding often led their rule in mayhem and disarray. But WHY does this happen? By 1520, Europe found itself in an interesting moment. The most significant leaders in the endless jostle for power and influence were all young kings - Henry VIII in England, around 30 years old; Francis I in France, around 26 years old; and Charles V as King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor, at about 20 years old. You can imagine how potentially unstable an axis of entitled, army-commanding young kings might be, but it's noteworthy that there were cooler heads with bigger visions than wars of conquest moving pieces on the field of politics even then. Henry's England was still something of a third wheel in the spheres of influence of the era, but both Francis and Charles were eager to count the island nation as an ally in their machinations against each other. Henry's right hand man, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, had the idea that it could be possible to produce an enduring peace among the Christian nations, particularly in light of the growing threat of the Ottoman Empire. Following the 1518 Treaty of London, a non-aggression pact between most of Europe's states, Wolsey wanted to showcase both the majesty and the (largely imaginary) friendship between England and France, resulting in a three-week-long summit between Henry VIII (and many thousands of courtiers, artisans, soldiers, and others) and Francis I (and many thousands of courtiers, artisans, soldiers, and others) on a large turnip field outside of Calais, then an English holding. The two sides spent months ahead of the June meeting building elaborate, but fake, castles, stadiums and other infrastructure to house, feed, and maintain the influx of people, horses, livestock, and goods that were soon to arrive. The Cloth of the Field of Gold was heralded as an event of great import, and Henry VIII would consider it a high point of his reign, but as we know, the dream of a peaceful Europe would not be realized for many centuries to come, and even now, remains a fragile and threatened thing. This week you get just me (Jessica Perry Hekman) talking at you! I'm talking about the coefficient of inbreeding (COI), a measurement of genetic diversity that's commonly mentioned in discussions of individual and breed health. I talk about what it is, how to interpret it, how to get the measurement done for your own dog(s), why we care about it, and give the take-home messages from some papers with evidence for its importance in dog specifically. COI is not the only thing you should be breeding for, and it's rarely even the most important thing - but it's something we should keep in mind when we are working in closed gene pools. I mention some previous podcast episodes with related material - you can find them here: Alison Skipper, PhD on the history of breed registries: https://functionalbreeding.podbean.com/e/alison-skipper-phd-the-history-of-breed-registries/ Mary Peaslee, MD, MPH, on breeding for population health: https://functionalbreeding.org/breeding-for-population-health/ The papers: https://functionalbreeding.org/the-impact-of-inbreeding-on-litter-size/ - Chu ET, Simpson MJ, Diehl K, Page RL, Sams AJ, Boyko AR. This is an interview I did with Brian Reeder, on April 2, 2023. Since then, we did 4 more interviews, discussing the many aspects of chicken genetics and color of plumage. All these interviews will be available for our members of the Breeders Academy.  The first interview was originally a 5 hour talk, and we talked about: Inbreeding and Hybrid Vigor Quantitative Inheritance and Polygenic Traits The importance of Autosomal Pheomelanin  The Breeding and Genetics of Whites and Progressive White The Breeding of Blues and Red Piles And so much more.  Although the majority of this discussion was made available to our members of the Breeders Academy, we are making this segment on “The Origins of the Domestic Chicken” available for you, our listeners.  How did this conversation happen? One of my members of The Breeders Academy contacted Brian, and asked if he was interested in doing a show with me on poultry genetics, and color genetics, and he said yes. So I reached out to Brian, to set up an interview, and this is a small portion of that recording.  Understand that this recording was not originally intended for the public. Brian and me were just having fun talking chickens and genetics, and geeking out and sharing information. Letting out this particular phone call recording to the public was a total afterthought. The quality of this recording is a bit rough, but the upcoming episodes on genetics are much better. Brian Reeder is a well known writer on poultry, and has done extensive research on Domestic Fowl and their Genetics. His books and articles have been based upon his experiences working with Domestic Fowl. And through the years he has collected important data, data that we can use today, in breeding and perpetuating higher quality fowl. He is also the author of two books on poultry genetics, “An Introduction to Color Forms of the Domestic Fowl” and “An Introduction to Form and Feathering of the Domestic Fowl.” With Brian's permission, I am making this segment of the recording (The Origins of the Domestic Chicken) available to our listeners. There's a lot of great information in this recording that I know you will enjoy and learn from. I learned a lot too. In fact, Brian changed many of my old paradigms. Don't miss out on this essential episode! So, sit back, take notes and enjoy the show with Brian Reeder. We will include links to his website, and the books he has written, in the show notes. His website on poultry is found at http://www.brianreederbreeder.blogspot.com . His books on poultry genetics are both easily accessible through Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Color-Forms-Domestic-Fowl/dp/1425904211/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2XM9M6GD4Y75E&keywords=brian+reeder&qid=1708279856&sprefix=brian+reeder%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-1 https://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Form-Feathering-Domestic-Fowl/dp/1456747843/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2XM9M6GD4Y75E&keywords=brian+reeder&qid=1708279856&sprefix=brian+reeder%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-2 We specialize in breeding, and breeding related topics. Join Kenny Troiano, as he talks about the interesting world of dog. In each topic, he will go deep into the art and science of breeding dogs. Becoming a reputable breeder requires more than just a love for dogs—it demands a profound understanding of genetics, evolutionary biology, animal husbandry, and the commitment to maintaining proper breed standards. From understanding the difference between "Phenotype" and "Genotype" to having the courage required to create a true family. Learn the importance of selection and culling, where producing a large number of dogs, some being culls, is essential to uncovering the true standouts in a lineage. Discover why pedigree alone does not define a dog's worth, and why the “Name Game” should be avoided in favor of improving essential traits. He talks about the myths and truths surrounding bloodlines and hybrid vigor, and debunks common misconceptions about purity versus hybridization. Gain a greater understand of inbreeding, COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding), and the delicate balance required to maintain genetic diversity, while striving for uniformity, consistency and improvement. Whether you're a beginner breeder, dreaming of starting a new line, or a seasoned breeder aiming to refine an established one, Kenny provides invaluable insights and practical advice. He also talks about the challenges, triumphs, and dedication needed to breed and create a true family or strain. This is a show that you do not want to miss! Topics: Understand the breed Experience, as a breeder, is important, but Knowledge of breeding is required Husbandry practices - what should you know Commitment to one family Courage to do what's necessary  Patience and Perseverance The importance of Selection and Culling It's important to know the difference between “Phenotype” and “Genotype.” Must be willing to produce culls to find the standouts Make sure your animals are worthy of breeding The Numbers are Necessary One animal should never represent the foundation of a whole family Avoid the Name Game - it's the peddlers playground Truth about bloodlines - purity of blood, or mongrelization? The offspring always prove the worth of the Parents Percentage Game is not real Don't breed to extremes The Offspring must be better than the parents - Or you are not improving the family. Understand that “Nothing is Perfect” Maintaining hybrid vigor is not a good thing. The Myth about hybrids and outcrosses The problem with reintroducing old blood Inbreeding and Managing the COI Performance traits and gameness are never improved in one mating or cross Consistency and uniformity is only improved or maintained through inbreeding  How long does it take to create a family? Is a pedigree important? We specialize in breeding, and breeding related topics. This includes proper selection practices and the use of proven breeding programs. BernerGarde Leads the Way in Open Sharing of Health Information Host Laura Reeves is joined by Lori Jodar, president of the BernerGarde Foundation, to discuss this legendary program. BernerGarde has been collecting health and pedigree data on the Bernese Mountain Dog for nearly 30 years. The founder of this concept began in the 1960s gathering information on 3x5 cards. The non-profit foundation was created in the 1980s and now includes 215,000 dogs' information. “The mission of BernerGarde has always been genetic, genetic, genetic,” Jodar said. “And because of that, we've been able to stay on course. The Parent Club, the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, and the BernerGarde Foundation have remained very good partners throughout the years. So that's a good thing. “The most expensive thing that we have done to date is to start a repository. We started a DNA and tissue repository. “We knew we wanted to study this malignant histiocytosis. So in 2006, we partnered with Michigan State University, Dr. Vilma, we call her Dr. Vilma. And she's a brilliant researcher, as well as being a professor at Michigan State University Veterinary School, and she has managed a repository for us. We have 4,000 unique dogs in the repository, and I don't know how many tumors we have, but not that many, but like 1,000, we use for research. “It's very expensive, very, very expensive, but what has morphed out of that is there's a group in France that has been studying histiocytic sarcoma for a long time, and they are finding some answers. So, we have shared DNA with them, tumor submissions with them. We're about to send several hundred DNA samples to them for their continuing research. “The database that we have is so vibrant and vital to the community. I don't think I can overstate it. It's become part of everybody's life. And if they complain about anything, they... they being the community of breeders, they complain about anything, it's that there's never enough information. “Through this database, there's health records. We divide the health records into what we call anecdotal and diagnosed. So, to be diagnosed, you have to have veterinary support, a pathology report or veterinary report to actually have a diagnosed condition. And then we do all the health certs, you know, we get a quarterly thing from OFA on hips and elbows and whatever they're doing. “We also have, you know, about 50% of the dogs in the database now are not US, they're from Europe and Australia and Canada. So, we needed to learn how to interpret all of those records like through the FCI in Europe. And oh it's a lot. So, we have database operators all over the world now. We have about 30 of them and they're kind of the in-between, between the people that want to submit information. “We are so focused on accuracy that I think that has given us legitimacy, actually, that focus. “If you got a bitch and you are looking for a stud, you can go to our database. We have a stud-finder and you can put in parameters. What the age is, do they need their hips, do they need their elbows, do they need DM, do they need whatever it is that you feel you need for your breeding. And then, we'll just... spit out a list of stud dogs. “You can also do trial pedigrees. We also do COIs, Coefficient of Inbreeding, for every dog. You can put five pictures of your dog in there.”

Joining us for this discussion is returning guest Monika Wieland Shields, co-founder and director of Orca Behavior Institute.    But first we share some recent sighting stories because so much is happening on the water and we continue to see large groups of Bigg's killer whales in the area. Sara and Jeff ran an all day tour last weekend with Maya's Legacy Whale Watching and spent time with a group of 19 whales from several families, including the T036As, T049A1, T124As, T124C, T125A, T128, and the T065Bs, who had a new calf by her side.   There are so many young whales in the Bigg's population and on this particular encounter, over 25% of the whales were under the age of 3. We discuss the contrast between the number of Bigg's v Southern Resident killer whales under the age of 10 and how this is stunning when seen visually (see image under photos).   We also discuss a recent sea lion hunt right outside of Friday Harbor with the T018s with the T049As, and an interesting encounter with the T046s and T046Bs where T046 herself was not present.   We then turn the conversation to the recently published paper, "Inbreeding depression explains killer whale population dynamics." Monika leads the discussion about inbreeding depression, which is defined as reduced biological fitness that results from breeding between related individuals. The primary finding of the study is that both males and females are less likely to reach age 40 if they have a higher inbreeding coefficient. The Southern Resident killer whales lack of recovery is due, in part, to their lack of genetic diversity compared to the other populations in the Northeast Pacific, which have all been increasing in population. We discussed the role of the captures for marine parks and how this created a population bottleneck. We also discuss other factors hindering Southern Resident recovery and what can be done to address the factors that are within our control.   We also talk about some of the fascinating supplemental information in the paper, including updated paternity information and effective population sizes.   We conclude the episode by announcing our After the Breach Photo Workshop with Sara & Jeff. We will be holding the workshop on Saturday, September 23rd and Sunday, September 24th. You can sign up for one day or both. We will have all day tours (6-8 hours) each day, including catering, photography & whale ID tips, and a lot of fun.
