Chad and Eric conduct a partial autopsy on the corpse of the 2025 San Francisco Giants, but before that, there's a long conversation about who the Giants are going to replace Bob Melvin with. That's right, after signing Melvin to an extension on July 1, the Giants parted ways with Melvin and now will search for their next skipper. No, it won't be Bruce Bochy, who just ended his tenure as manager with the Rangers. So much went wrong for the Giants this year, but in the end, they missed the playoffs by just 3 games (they were 2 games back, but Mets held the tiebreaker over Giants). Heck, Ryan Walker blew three saves (all losses) in the last two weeks of the season alone! There are many other games to point to. The Giants are close, tantalizingly close, but they need more. Buster Posey said in this morning's interview that they can't keep doing the same thing and expecting different results, thus the Melvin dismissal. We start off with the superlatives, and this time, for the thrill of it all, we've prepared them without telling the other who/what we've picked. Then, we nominate eleven players who have really broken out this season, before highlighting their antitheses in the Flop XI—stunningly, one unfortunate player is a repeat from last year. Finally, in our Lessons Learned, we chew on the challenges of balancing FPL with our busy lives, the value of long-term planning even at the tail end of the season, and the virtues of never buying Diogo Jota or Dominic Calvert-Lewin ever again. And did you REALLY think we weren't going to sneak in an economics reference? In thought-provoking fashion, Jacob astutely analogizes the debate between taking hits vs. saving transfers to the choice between a stable index fund or an actively managed mutual fund. Ellen Rignell has many years experience growing seed from her time at Trill Farms and as a program coordinator for the Gaia Foundation seed sovereignty program. But in this interview we catch Ellen at a new part of her seed journey as she's finishing the first growing season of her Winnow Farm Seeds, her very own seed company based in Dorset in the UK. In this episode, we discuss what Ellen wants from this new business and we discuss all the things other than growing seed that you need to know when launching a seed business. Ellen talks about her collaboration with Lucy and Emma of Meadowsweet Flowers and Floristry. These are flower growers she shares the site with. How this helps share infrastructure, rent and labour in addition to amazing camaraderie and having tea breaks together. This collaboration also creates an opportunity to grow flower seeds especially adapted to the wet UK climate. In the deep dive Ellen and I talk about growing parsnips for seed. The importance of sloping shoulders to drive rain away, whether to stake flowering parsnips or not, and do parsnip seeds live up to their reputation as bad germinators with limited storage life? We also discuss working with biennials other than parsnip. At the end of the conversation Ellen goes into the opportunities to grow seed in a market growing context to take advantage of gaps in your crop plan and to better use farm labour.
