I have captured the sounds of the Indy Cars practicing for the Detroit Grand Prix. The recordings were taken on the bridge that crosses directly over the racetrack over Jefferson Avenue at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit. Recorded by Rebecca Goldberg.
Ricky Taylor has amassed championships and race wins in the top level of sports car racing. Currently driving for Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti in the Acura ARX-06 GTP car, he scored a victory at the 2024 Detroit Grand Prix and a podium with his co-driver Felipe Albuquerque at Road America. We met up with Ricky at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach Media Day where he was kind enough to give me a few hot laps in the Acura Integra Type S DE5 race car. Being a Fast Lane instructor, I'm always learning something whenever I get on the racetrack either as a driver or sitting right seat. In this instance, I learned that this top level professional driver is human after all and can make a mistake. I asked him about it, and he admitted it and gave the reason why and what happened. He is a true professional, humble, polite and extremely talented. His “debrief” of this session is fascinating and he explains how he's learning a new race car on a race track that's only used once a year. A real insider's look into a track session debrief. Enjoy! NOTE: Ricky Taylor and his teammate will be going for victory in the Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on October 12, 2024.
Felipe Albuquerque is a multi-time championship winning driver and races the Acura ARX-06 GTP car in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti (with teammate Ricky Taylor). We caught up with Albuquerque at the media luncheon just prior to the race at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. In this podcast interview, he gives us a fascinating insight into simulator prep work and specifically for this event. He goes into some detail between the Honda Driver in the Loop (DIL) sim versus iRacing. This is also a good interview for kids to listen to as he talks about how valuable his education was and how it has impacted his racing career. Enjoy! NOTE: Albuquerque and Taylor would go on to win the Detroit Grand Prix this season and score a podium (third) at Mid-Ohio in August. Going into the final race of the season, the Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on October 9-12, 2024, he currently sits sixth in the championship standings.
In this episode of the Skiff Meetings Podcast, we speak with Andrea Cadotto, director of sales at Visit Detroit. Cadotto sheds light on Detroit's dynamic evolution and promising future in large-scale events and urban development. Legacy and Reputation Visit Detroit, established in 1896, was the first-ever convention and visitors bureau. Detroit features many historical firsts, including the first stoplight and the first paved road. The city has continuously positioned itself at the forefront of innovation. Cadotto emphasized that this legacy provides Visit Detroit with invaluable experience and a trailblazing spirit that sets it apart. Detroit recently hosted the NFL Draft, with 750,000 visitors joining the event over three days. This event showcased the city's logistical capabilities, vibrant community spirit and enthusiasm for high-profile events. Annual events like the Detroit Grand Prix, Movement Festival, and Jazz Festival cement its reputation as an events hub. Ongoing Transformation Over the past decade, Detroit has undergone a deep transformation. The city has made substantial investments in infrastructure, including enhancements to the convention centers and improvements to the local transportation system. Both public and private investments are supporting the revitalization of the city's economic and cultural landscape. Detroit's skyline and infrastructure are witnessing significant growth, with several new developments, particularly in the hospitality sector. The recent openings of the Godfrey Hotel and the Cambria Hotel are worth noting. Also noteworthy is the highly anticipated new addition at the Hudson site — set to become the city's second tallest building. The reopening of the Michigan Central Station, now a hub for Ford's autonomous vehicle research, marks another milestone in Detroit's journey towards becoming a futuristic city. Local Community Benefits from Events The influx of events and visitors brings substantial economic benefits to the local community. Cadotto highlighted how local media partnerships and community involvement are pivotal in maximizing the impacts of hosting events in Detroit. These initiatives drive economic activity and foster a sense of pride and ownership among residents, who are eager to showcase their city's resurgence and vibrancy. As Detroit continues to redefine itself through strategic developments and a robust events calendar, it is set on a promising path. For event planners and business leaders looking for a location that offers historical richness and modern amenities, the city presents an irresistible proposition with its unique blend of grit and innovation. Visit Detroit is ready to welcome the world so that everyone can experience the city's unique charm and capabilities.
Will Power has won just about everything there is to win in the NTT IndyCar Series such as the most pole positions in Indy car racing history (70), the Indianapolis 500, the series championship (twice) and multiple races along the way. However, his last race win came in June of 2022 at the Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle until this year's race in June at Road America. We had a chance to chat with Power in the media bullpen for the 2024 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach in April, where in this wide-ranging chat, he talks about his wife's life-threatening illness, his off-season prep, favorite and most challenging parts of the Long Beach circuit (where he's won twice before), karting, and Indianapolis hybrid testing. Power is thoughtful and forthright with his answers. Enjoy! Read More... Interview and photos Copyright © by Larry Mason
Sorry this one's a little late folks, Dre was caught up with the day job, but allow yourself to catch up with what we thought about one of the most chaotic races in recent times, the 2024 Detroit Grand Prix! It was THE chaotic race of 2024. Eight cautions, 12 driving penalties handed out (Four of which to Will Power, whose race position looked like an EKG monitor), and FORTY-SEVEN per cent of the race ran under yellow, including 20 straight in the middle of a damp Detroit where everyone was caught out by the bumpy braking point into Turn 3 on Chambers Street. Yikes. In the end, Scott Dixon kept a cool head and did what he does best - save fuel brilliantly when a race broke out at the end and lead a Honda 1-2-3-4 in Chevrolet's back yard, and the gang try to make sense of one of the craziest IndyCar races in modern times, including a Penske implosion! But there was also two major PR nightmare the series delivered that we had to discuss - Santino Ferrucci having a shoving match with Kyle Kirkwood and dropping a homophobic remark when interviewed about it (Right on the first day of Pride Month). Then Agustin Canapino and the first part of his verbal tirade after Theo Pourchaire hit him during the race, and Ricardo Juncos calls him a "Son of a thousand whores" on the team radio. There'll be more on this next week, but see where the story began. All that and more on another Motorsport101!
We are back and better than ever! Ok, maybe not the "better than ever" part. We're talking all about the wild ending to the Cup race from World Wide Technologies Raceway and the huge win for SVG out in Portland. We preview the upcoming trip to Sonoma for the Cup and Xfinity cars and make our extremely well-educated picks for Sunday. We review the Detroit Grand Prix and look ahead to IndyCar's trip to Road America. We give you the NHRA winners and preview F1's upcoming race in Montreal.

Conor Daly and co-host Chase Holden return to Speed Street after a wild weekend in the streets of Detroit. In a race that saw Scott Dixon put on another fuel saving clinic to bring home his 58th career IndyCar victory, there was no love lost amongst the rest of the field. Conor and Chase dig into the latest Santino Ferrucci spat with Andretti Global teammates Kyle Kirkwood and Colton Herta, which bubbled up during an incident in the second practice session of the weekend where Santino felt Kirkwood blocked him unnecessarily while he was on a fast mock qualifying run. This marks the latest in an ongoing saga of driver feuds surrounding Ferrucci, and Conor gives listeners more insight to the feelings in the IndyCar paddock regarding the AJ Foyt Racing pilot. Scott Dixon joins the show to chat about how he survived the chaos and how the layout of the Detroit circuit leads to aggressive, caution-laden events. While this most recent running saw 47-laps run under caution, Scott gives a few ideas for changes that could be made that may help eliminate some of the contact between cars in the tight turns of the street course. Chase also pitches the idea of the IndyCar Series returning to the highbanks of Michigan International, to which Scott replies he's game as long as the fans follow them there. Scott and Conor discuss their time spent racing each other in the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500, and Scott weighs in on his contact with Ryan Hunter-Reay. Finally, the guys preview the upcoming weekend in Road America and Scott looks forward to his chaotic schedule immediately following when he'll fly to France to begin to prepare for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Tonight on Trackside, we recap a crazy Detroit Grand Prix. Curt and Kevin recap the Grand Prix and talk about their reaction to it. They also talk about Kyle Larson's waiver finally being granted by NASCAR, and controversy with Agustin Canapino and Theo Pourchaire. Kevin believes that racing is a financial business, and even if the track is not perfect, there is serious financial gain to be had from racing at this location. He believes that having one wreck-filled race a year is not all that bad for teams, and fans like chaos. Later in the the first hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about Scott Dixon. We hear about how Alex Palou's season has not been as dominant as it had been in previous years, and now Scott Dixon is a challenger for the championship win. They talk about Scott Dixon approaching AJ Foyt's win record, and if he can surpass it in his career. To round out the first hour, Kevin answers some listener questions, like lack of fans at oval races, Ed Carpenter swapping cars, and more. In the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about Flavor Flav, and his being Will Power's hype man. Kevin recounts a story of Power at qualifying in Detroit, and how Flav made sure he was in the camera shot during an interview to promote his brand. We talk about Will Power's comments during the race about race control and answer other listener questions. They also talk about David Malukas and what team he could come back and race for this season and next season, and Tom Blomqvist being removed from Meyer-Shank. They also talk about the conflict with Santino Ferrucci and Kyle Kirkwood. Later in the second hour, Kevin and Curt talk about the controversy with Agustin Canapino and Theo Pourchaire, and the threats Pourchaire received for crashing with Canapino during the race. We hear about IndyCar's stance on the issue, what Canapino had to say, and how Juncos is taking the controversy, and how hard it would be to regulate these types of threats. Kevin ends the show paying homage to racing legend Parnelli Jones. It was announced that Jones passed during the show, and Kevin talks about his accomplishments, and we hear a statement from PJ Jones, Parnelli's son.
