After Rory McIlroy dramatically became the sixth golfer in the modern history of the game to win the career Grand Slam at The Masters, Phil and Josh return to discuss this momentous occassion and everything that went on in the world of motorsports. Kyle Kirkwood added his name to the illustrious history at Long Beach, becoming a two-time winner of the event after winning pole for both races. Alex Palou's early season winning streak was ended, but he still had a strong finish. Multiple pit strategies and a completely green flag race made it interesting, while Penske's performance definitely was not Penske Perfect. Kyle Larson dominated 2/3 of the weekend at Bristol, winning the Cup and XFinity races. Yung Money ended up 2nd behind Chandler Smith in the Truck Series event. Rajah Carruth and Martinsville winner Daniel Hemric both had solid days along with the Niece duo. Oscar Piastri inserted himself into the title discussion with a dominant weekend at Bahrain, culminating in a win from pole. The McLaren driver held off Woody Russell and teammate Lando Norris to take the top step. Fish Lips was nowhere the entire weekend while Ferrari had mixed fortunes. Phil is competing as an Am in the ApexOne GT3 Endurance race at Catalunya, so he gives his thoughts on ACC and his feelings going into the event. Can Phil come through with a victory? Someone who many thought would have a victory at Augusta long before Sunday was Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman made it unnecessarily interesting throughout the final round, but held on in the first hole of the playoff to make history. Phil was focused on the Masters because it has always been his favorite golf tournament of the year, while Rory's win also was a happy result. The GSP Roundup covered F2/F3/F1 Academy, IMSA, MotoGP/Moto2, Supercars, Formula E, WSBK, WEC and Anthony Wayne Stewart's first career Top Fuel win at Las Vegas in the Four Wide Nationals, with Austin Prock (Funny Car) and Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock) taking the Wally's in their respective classes.  Phil and Josh preview the Rockingham return for XFinity and Trucks and make picks along with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Formula One race before Josh's Sim Segment and Show Close.

Conor Daly had a rough showing at the Long Beach Grand Prix, and he is back on Speed Street to join co-host Chase Holden and break down what happened. After struggling in qualifying, Conor and the 76-Juncos Hollinger Team had an error in their fuel calculations during the early stages of the race, which Conor explains took him out of competition due to having to reduce speed to save fuel. He also outlines some of the mechanical changes the team was making to help get him more comfortable behind the wheel, but ultimately it was a difficult race day. Despite a record turnout for the historic race, IndyCar is once again in the headlines for the wrong reason: poor television ratings. Conor and Chase dig into the problem that has plagued the series in recent years and ponder solutions that can help put the series' fantastic racing product in front of more viewers.Race winner Kyle Kirkwood joins the show to chat about Andretti Global's success on street courses and how he was able to stay ahead of series point leader Alex Palou after the last pit cycle. The moment of the race was when Kyle managed to run competitive lap times on cold tires to keep ahead of the charging Palou, who made things interesting in the closing laps. The guys talk about the confidence Kyle will carry forward to Barber and the Indy GP with a win under his belt and how he hopes to close the points gap between him and Palou. Kyle explains how he hopes to improve on ovals this year and how he's learned to love that form of racing in recent times. The conversation also touches on the electric environment in Long Beach and looks ahead to the open Indianapolis 500 test.

Send us a textThe Grand Finale of the 2024 NTT IndyCar Series was a race to remember!!After getting evicted from the original Downtown Circuit, the race promoters  (i.e. Scott Borchetta) secured the Nashville Superspeedway for the promised "Final Event" of the IndyCar season. Those who made the short trip out to the 1.33 mile concrete oval were rewarded with a far better race than the makeshift street circuit could have provided. Even though title challenger Will Power's race (and belts) unraveled early on, there was plenty of high-speed action as recently relocated hometown hero Colton Herta navigated a late traffic jam to earn his first victory on an oval.In a somewhat anti-climatic fashion, Alex Palou earned his 3rd IndyCar title...an incredible feat when you consider the competitiveness of the IndyCar driver lineup, the equality of the cars, and the level of competition between and within  teams. We think The IndyCar Fan Podcast captures the key moments and strategies of the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix. As the IndyCar teams travel back east from Portland, Conor Daly returns to Speed Street to report on how his weekend in the Rose City unfolded. He joins co-host Chase Holden to unpack the race and react to Santino Ferrucci's monster qualifying lap which rewarded him his first career pole and brought A.J. Foyt Racing back to the top of the charts. They also chat about how Portland's record for first lap full-course yellows was upheld, but this time it wasn't in turn one. Conor breaks down what happened between Scott Dixon, Kyle Kirkwood and Pietro Fittipaldi, a crash that took Dixon out of the championship battle. Finally, Conor details his own contact with Pietro and how the spin cost him valuable time in a race that ran mostly under green.Race winner Will Power joins the show for the third time this season after his dominant victory over points leader Alex Palou. Will marvels over how close the IndyCar paddock is this season, as qualifying saw the field separated by mere tenths of a second. He also explains how he and Santino discussed the start of the race on the grid beforehand and the move that gave him the early lead. Will gives listeners insight as to how difficult it is mentally to maintain a large lead in a race like Portland, where he is constantly analyzing data and watching what second place is doing behind him. While it may look easy, there are many factors at play such as conserving tires and fuel that he needs to concentrate on for the duration of the event. Will weighs in on his championship chances as the IndyCar season moves into its final three races and what he needs to do to further close in on Palou.

He joins co-host Chase Holden to chat about his flight troubles while trying to get to and from Charlotte for some Toyota sim time in preparation for his race weekend as well a test in a GT3 sports car at Virginia International Raceway. More flight issues on the way home made him late to prepare for his Indy double: racing a NASCAR Truck at Indianapolis Raceway Park and an Xfinity car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. After an impressive practice session Friday afternoon in the stock car at the big track, Conor had a police escort to IRP where he would end up driving from the back of the pack while learning the ropes of NASCAR short track racing. Finally, Conor gives an in depth breakdown of his Saturday spent at the Brickyard mixing it up with the NASCAR Xfinity crew, where he came home in 14th place. The guys also dive into IndyCar's weekend at Toronto, where Penske teammates Will Power and Scott McLaughlin had an on-track dust-up and Santino Ferrucci went for a wild ride. Race winner Colton Herta joins the show to discuss Andretti Autosport's prowess at the Toronto street course and how the team has it circled on the calendar every year due to its continued success there. He gives a lot of credit to teammate Kyle Kirkwood who helped keep the Ganassi teammates Scott Dixon and Alex Palou at bay while they cruised to a one-two victory. Colton and Conor also chat about this year's Indy 500 and what led to Colton's lap 86 crash. Finally, Colton weighs in on what growth he's seen for the IndyCar Series this year and how he sees more fans at the race track than ever before.

Tonight on Trackside, Kevin and Curt recap the race at Toronto, and Kevin's rough travel schedule with technical difficulties keeping him seated on his plane for seven hours. They talk about how Kyle Kirkwood was the perfect teammate for Colton Herta this weekend, and how if Colton was second and Kirkwood was first, Herta might have been more aggressive at passing his teammate. They debate on whether the two teammates will be more competitive next time if this situation happens again, and they run through the field to talk about how Ganassi and Penske performed. They talk about the caution debacle that led to a huge pileup, and what IndyCar will do going forward.  Later on, Curt and Kevin talk about how Alex Palou has pulled away in the championship standings, with a 48-point cushion going into the last few races of the season. Curt talks about how good Palou has been on ovals, and how consistent Palou has been with always getting top 5s. They talk about how it would require Palou to finish 18th or worse in two races for him to lose the championship.   To round out the first hour, Kevin reads some listener tweets, and how Scott Dixon is Mr. IndyCar. He also answers a question about splitting up qualifying for cleaner laps.  In the second hour of the show, the two talk about the Brickyard 400 and Kyle Larson's win, and the controversy surrounding the finish. Conor Daly and Marco Andretti competed in the Brickyard weekend, and Kevin and Curt talk about how they performed. The two also provide an update on Alexander Rossi's injury, and when he will be back in the car. They discuss the options McLaren could have had outside of Theo Pourchaire for this weekend, and some drama around Pourchaire's comments about McLaren. They also talk about Oliver Askew being on-site but not racing, and why they chose Pourchaire.  Later in the second hour, they talk about O'Ward and Palou during qualifying, and how Palou was penalized for impeding Pato's lap. Kevin encourages the idea of single car qualifying, and how it would benefit teams and drivers. Curt brings up how that could cause issues timing wise, and prefers three groups.  Kevin ends the show talking about what they missed, and reading tweets, including predicting the Simpson caution. He also answers a question about Fox making Iowa go down to one race. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to our motorsports podcast where we discuss F1, IndyCar, IMSA, NASCAR, our own racing adventures, and some other adventures! This past weekend, racecars tried to become planes as cars got airborne. Formula 1 continued its season at the Hungaroring where McLaren finished 1-2 but not without some controversy. Verstappen meanwhile finished 5th after bad strategy from the pit wall and a few overtakes that came from desperation on his end.IndyCar went to the streets of Toronto where Andretti dominated as Colton Herta was 5 race laps short of a grand slam as he took the win ahead of his teammate Kyle Kirkwood. Two cars got airborne as well in this race with Santino Ferrucci most notably ending upside down. He was alright but that was the end of his race.NASCAR returned to Indy but this time they returned to the rectangle for the Brickyard 400...and in typical NASCAR fashion the end of the race came down to an overtime finish but this one came with some extra spiciness as the officials seemed to make up some rules to get the race over with. Larson wins in the end but not very many people were happy otherwise about the decisions made from race control.Coming up this weekend - Formula 1 goes to the infamous Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium for the last round before their summer break. NASCAR is on a two week summer break of their own as the Olympics are going on and NBC will be focusing their coverage to the events in Paris.

Sorry this one's a little late folks, Dre was caught up with the day job, but allow yourself to catch up with what we thought about one of the most chaotic races in recent times, the 2024 Detroit Grand Prix! It was THE chaotic race of 2024. Eight cautions, 12 driving penalties handed out (Four of which to Will Power, whose race position looked like an EKG monitor), and FORTY-SEVEN per cent of the race ran under yellow, including 20 straight in the middle of a damp Detroit where everyone was caught out by the bumpy braking point into Turn 3 on Chambers Street. Yikes. In the end, Scott Dixon kept a cool head and did what he does best - save fuel brilliantly when a race broke out at the end and lead a Honda 1-2-3-4 in Chevrolet's back yard, and the gang try to make sense of one of the craziest IndyCar races in modern times, including a Penske implosion! But there was also two major PR nightmare the series delivered that we had to discuss - Santino Ferrucci having a shoving match with Kyle Kirkwood and dropping a homophobic remark when interviewed about it (Right on the first day of Pride Month). Then Agustin Canapino and the first part of his verbal tirade after Theo Pourchaire hit him during the race, and Ricardo Juncos calls him a "Son of a thousand whores" on the team radio. There'll be more on this next week, but see where the story began. All that and more on another Motorsport101!

Conor Daly and co-host Chase Holden return to Speed Street after a wild weekend in the streets of Detroit. In a race that saw Scott Dixon put on another fuel saving clinic to bring home his 58th career IndyCar victory, there was no love lost amongst the rest of the field. Conor and Chase dig into the latest Santino Ferrucci spat with Andretti Global teammates Kyle Kirkwood and Colton Herta, which bubbled up during an incident in the second practice session of the weekend where Santino felt Kirkwood blocked him unnecessarily while he was on a fast mock qualifying run. This marks the latest in an ongoing saga of driver feuds surrounding Ferrucci, and Conor gives listeners more insight to the feelings in the IndyCar paddock regarding the AJ Foyt Racing pilot. Scott Dixon joins the show to chat about how he survived the chaos and how the layout of the Detroit circuit leads to aggressive, caution-laden events. While this most recent running saw 47-laps run under caution, Scott gives a few ideas for changes that could be made that may help eliminate some of the contact between cars in the tight turns of the street course. Chase also pitches the idea of the IndyCar Series returning to the highbanks of Michigan International, to which Scott replies he's game as long as the fans follow them there. Scott and Conor discuss their time spent racing each other in the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500, and Scott weighs in on his contact with Ryan Hunter-Reay. Finally, the guys preview the upcoming weekend in Road America and Scott looks forward to his chaotic schedule immediately following when he'll fly to France to begin to prepare for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Tonight on Trackside, we recap a crazy Detroit Grand Prix. Curt and Kevin recap the Grand Prix and talk about their reaction to it. They also talk about Kyle Larson's waiver finally being granted by NASCAR, and controversy with Agustin Canapino and Theo Pourchaire. Kevin believes that racing is a financial business, and even if the track is not perfect, there is serious financial gain to be had from racing at this location. He believes that having one wreck-filled race a year is not all that bad for teams, and fans like chaos.  Later in the the first hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about Scott Dixon. We hear about how Alex Palou's season has not been as dominant as it had been in previous years, and now Scott Dixon is a challenger for the championship win. They talk about Scott Dixon approaching AJ Foyt's win record, and if he can surpass it in his career.  To round out the first hour, Kevin answers some listener questions, like lack of fans at oval races, Ed Carpenter swapping cars, and more.  In the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about Flavor Flav, and his being Will Power's hype man. Kevin recounts a story of Power at qualifying in Detroit, and how Flav made sure he was in the camera shot during an interview to promote his brand. We talk about Will Power's comments during the race about race control and answer other listener questions. They also talk about David Malukas and what team he could come back and race for this season and next season, and Tom Blomqvist being removed from Meyer-Shank. They also talk about the conflict with Santino Ferrucci and Kyle Kirkwood.  Later in the second hour, Kevin and Curt talk about the controversy with Agustin Canapino and Theo Pourchaire, and the threats Pourchaire received for crashing with Canapino during the race. We hear about IndyCar's stance on the issue, what Canapino had to say, and how Juncos is taking the controversy, and how hard it would be to regulate these types of threats.  Kevin ends the show paying homage to racing legend Parnelli Jones. It was announced that Jones passed during the show, and Kevin talks about his accomplishments, and we hear a statement from PJ Jones, Parnelli's son. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stand by race fans, the countdown to the 49th Annual Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is almost over. In just a couple of days the city streets of Long Beach will be shut down to everyday traffic and the sounds of roaring engines will reverberate off of the buildings around the convention center, arena, Hyatt hotel and Aquarium of the Pacific. Headlining the event this year will once again be the NTT IndyCar Series with practice and qualifying on Friday and Saturday, while a Sunday morning warm-up and main-event race will be on Sunday. Once again IMSA will be the headline race on Saturday afternoon featuring the GTP cars and GTD (GT3) cars. No GTD Pro category this year which means that some of the pro teams will drop down to the Pro/Am category to have another shot at a win.  Heading into Long Beach on a roll is last year's Indy 500 champion and 2022 AGPLB winner, Josef Newgarden, who won the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona this year in a Penske Porsche and the season's first Indy car race at St. Pete. Two-time NTT IndyCar Series Champion Alex Palou is also a winner this year at the non-points Million Dollar Challenge at Thermal Club last month by romping away from his competition. Former Long Beach winner and pole-sitter Colton Herta also won the 12 Hours of Sebring while his teammate and last year's winner here, Kyle Kirkwood, also won his class at Sebring. This long-standing event is rich in the team's data books so trying to carve out an advantage over the competition is always difficult. Expect to see some scraped up race cars and white-walled tires as every driver will be pushing to the extreme limits to try and find lap time in qualifying. New for this year's schedule will be the historic Indy cars. There are numerous entries spanning decades in the sport with incredibly interesting history and pedigree. Dennis Firestone (who was 1980 CART rookie of the year) will be racing the Dan Gurney AAR Eagle that he raced at the Indy 500 back in 1982. Tony Kanaan will be racing an Offy-powered McLaren and has promised to push hard to win! SRO GT America racing will take the place of the Porsche Carrera Cup this year with a wide variety of manufacturers in the field such as Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Calloway Corvette, Lamborghini, Mercedes, and Porsche. Robby Gordon's popular high-flying trucks return along drifting.  This year's Saturday night concert has country music on tap featuring country stars Gretchen Wilson, Eddie Montgomery, and David Lee Murphy. Don't forget Thunder Thursday on Pine on April18th which is Free to the public where there'll be a pit stop competition and much more. For more information, please visit: www.gplb.com. Note: Jim Michaelian is the president and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach.
