Teletext50: The Stories A Byte High No Limit / illarterate co-production   In 1974, a brand new technology called teletext was being rolled out. It would, over the next few decades, have far-reaching implications, not only in the UK but worldwide.   These are the stories of those involved in the production, restoration and art of the blocky medium that graced UK TV screens until 2012. You'll hear from the pioneers, those who made teletext tick, and the newcomers keeping the medium alive 50 years after its inception.   This is a social record of teletext, and these are the teletext people. Digitiser, the teletext video game magazine recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in Lonodn and Jason & Rich were there to join in with all the shenanigans that were happening. Here we look back at the event and the two live shows plus our appearance on stage at the Chunky Fringe event which was being run alongside Digitiser Live. During the weekend we managed to round up some interviews including Cliff Foster from N64life, we met the legend that is Carl from the Byte High No Limit podcast and we got chatting with Superpage58's Chris Bell. But that's not all, as after the event we all sat down with the man responsible for most of Digitisers music from past to present and who also created all our original music, Mr Jerden Cooke. In a desperate attempt to get something out for Halloween, Paul and Eli tagged along with Mr Biffo and Sanja for a “Digitiser's Supernatural World” film shoot at a haunted sweet shop in Chatham, owned by a chap called Dan Does Crafts… The whole film crew slowly succumbed to an uninvited evil and, as of the publication of this episode, have yet to be found. Their whereabouts are still a terrifying mystery. What follows is an upsetting and, at times, disconcerting document of what happened on that fateful night, October 24th, 2022. My guest today is Paul Rose aka Mr. Biffo. A hugely influential videogame writer during his run at Digitiser, a teletext service on Channel 4, Paul is also a novelist, screenwriter, and has just successfully kickstarted Found Footage. an online sketch show. Mr Biffo, (or "Paul Rose" if you prefer to think of him as a human,) worked for Teletext when I was young.  He created the daily Teletext magazine Digitiser.  He has also worked for Ladbrokes designing their teletexty graphics, and the huge digital display at Wembley Stadium.  He admits he's a Marillion fan - I'm making no judgement on this, merely pointing it out. We regret to inform you that we haven’t found a use for the coin sound effect in this week’s episode. This is due to a surprisingly high level of competence from ourselves, which will never last. Iceland will be the main beneficiaries of our incompetence this week as Ann and Ste are going over to the Slush Play conference to do a Sigur Ros and Pollaponk based Marioke and to eat their body weight in Pipp chocolates. Ann is also going to be playing detective over there, hopefully she’s got a good jumper sorted out for it. Martho Ghariani from Oasis Games was this week’s Super-Special Guest. He’d just flown in from New York and boy were his arms tired! Oasis Games is a Beijing based publisher who is bringing five Playstation VR games from China over to the west over the next few months. We heard about the developing console market in China and tried to learn even more about how VR will change the videogame industry. Perhaps with all our knowledge we’ll become the first-ever VR podcast? (Actually this is A Good Idea – Ed) Mostly this week has been all about the hard cuts, and about us all hanging out with everyone else. Maybe they were Telegraph journalists. Ross hails from the UK but lives in Japan and so your hosts take the opportunity to discuss some slightly obscure corners of the Dreamcast library. CSK Holdings and their strange Dreamcast/health insurance console editions come up in conversation, as does Tom's obsession with ice hockey games. Mike reveals the additions to the updated Ultimate Collectors Guide, and Digitiser 2000's recent article on Sega's inability to recapture past glories is explored in more depth than is probably needed. Lines of chavs outside the local Job Centre, the levels of urban decay in Bristol and the sheer number of Sega arcade billboards cluttering the neon, rain-swept streets of Japan are all subjects tentatively touched upon. For many retro gamers, the 90s was a wonderful era packed to the brim with exciting new developments and technological advancements. Despite the rise of the Internet and other forms of getting our gaming fix delivered daily, one dedicated service we all know and loved remained on the most basic form of communication still around - Teletext. Digitiser was ‘The World’s Only Daily Game Magazine’ and one that wasn’t afraid to push the boundaries every 24 hours.

It's been a busy week. We were mentioned in Shortlist magazine in order to try and give a boost to a little known podcast called Serial. Hopefully this will help it attract the listeners it deserves. Ann's Mum's birthday was on Friday, so we were preparing all kinds of amazing treats and surprises for her. And Non-Intern Simon's drinking buddy Stewart Lee was on Lewis Schaffer's Nunhead Radio Show before us. So could this week's show match up to this? PRESS REVEAL TO FIND OUT (Assuming 'reveal' is the play button on your mp3 player) Well this week's Super-Special Guest was Mr Biffo from Digitiser (aka Paul Rose) so that meant there was no way we could fail. Unless we tried to get in our house using an Oyster card. Luckily two of us didn't try this so we got to ask Paul lots of questions about the excellent Digitiser, why he left Teletext, why he's brought Digitiser back and what it was like to write for Dirty Den. Simon also started to write a song for Paul to perform at our Christmas Party which will undoubtedly be amazing. But not as amazing as Digitiser 2000 is.
