Left to right: Sally Warhaft, George McEncroe and Kate McClymont — Photo: Emily Harms How do headline-grabbing stories about powerful figures in the media affect the broader Australian culture? The #MeToo movement began in the US – with the Harvey Weinstein revelations in October 2017 – and it quickly spread around the globe. In this discussion, we'll look at how #MeToo is playing out here in Australia with two guests who approach the subject from very different angles. Investigative reporter Kate McClymont broke the Don Burke sexual harassment allegation story late last year. George McEncroe is the founder of Shebah, an all-female rideshare service (in the style of Uber), which launched last year too. With Sally Warhaft, our guests discuss how #MeToo is changing public conversation and affecting private lives. Can #MeToo benefit all women or are the gains of the movement restricted to certain sections of society? What are women riding with Shebah saying about harassment and everyday safety in Australian cities? And what more can be done to effect lasting change?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

At the launch of the Nova 106.9 series of on-location broadcasts of the Ash, Kip and Luttsy with Susie O'Neill breakfast show, Mediaweek had the chance to speak in-depth with O'Neill.  This new interview makes a nice companion piece to the recent In Her Own Words series Mediaweek partnered with Nova Entertainment for where spoke to inspirational women in radio. Mediaweek has been lucky to have done several podcasts with Ash, Kip and Luttsy at different times, so it was great to get time with the former swimming champ and one of the important pillars in the success the Brisbane breakfast show has enjoyed in recent years. Although Nova was #1 in the first survey of 2018, it has been challenged in breakfast by Hit 105, something which O'Neill mention in our podcast. O'Neill talks frankly to Mediaweek about the decision not to jump straight into a media career after she stopped swimming. She also details how Nova Entertainment and her breakfast colleagues look after their star recruit and she remembers, with a fair amount of anger still, what she said on the record about former garden guru Don Burke's appalling and insulting behaviour toward her. The interview gives listeners an insight into just what makes O'Neill so compelling on the radio. Recently appointed a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for her work in journalism and for her ambassadorships for social welfare and charitable organisations. She led the public voice of the #MeToo movement in Australia, breaking the Don Burke story. Tracey’s lifelong passion is amplifying women’s voices, and in today’s conversation we discuss creating equality in the home and in the workplace. We discuss: ½ of women experience pregnancy discrimination in the workplace Your job is to be prepared by finding out the state and federal legislation and creating a strategy The gender pay gap Tracey didn’t ask for a pay rise for 14 years Now she says to always ask for more than you think you’re worth The gender pay gap in her own household Do your research and keep notes Know when the best time to ask for a pay rise is Keep a detailed diary of positive feedback, so provide proof of your performance Know what the share price is, and what other people received as bonses Figure out a way to make sure everyone can benefit – it’s not a zero sum game How we can change expectations in childhood, which may lead to different outcomes in the gender pay gap Having difficult conversations with your partner “long term resentment is a huge risk to a relationship” The 30% tipping point for sexual harassment, where it peaks and then drops off Quotas, targets and the inexistence of any true meritocracy There’s no such thing as work-life balance Let’s change the conversation so MEN are being asked how they manage it all Legislative changes that could be put in place to better support families An invitation from Tracey: Sit down and write out the amount of time it takes you to do your hair, makeup, buy your work wardrobe, and do all the things that come with society’s pressure on women to look a certain way Write down how much all of these things cost you financially Consider what else you can do with that money and time, and be deliberate about whether you want to keep spending it on meeting society’s unreasonable expectations of women’s looks Have a think about these cultural expectation If you want, then slowly start to pare it back.
