DescriptionWhat was Neoclassicism in music? And which composers utilized this aesthetic form? Take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactSergei Prokofiev's Symphony No. 1 (1917) is sometimes cited as a precursor of Neoclassicism. Prokofiev himself thought that his composition was a "passing phase" whereas Stravinsky's neoclassicism was by the 1920s "becoming the basic line of his music".About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. Classicism in Conversation returns for a new season with another installment of our popular mini-series Cities We Live In. Show host Kellen Krause and architects Anthony Catania and Rodrigo Bollat Montenegro visit Philip Bess, Professor of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, at his home in the Lincoln Square neighborhood in Chicago. Professor Bess shares how his interests brought him to Chicago, and discusses the history that created the modern urban landscape we see today. Though he initially moved to the city to find a job as an architect, his experiences in the city brought him to the study of urbanism and its impact on the way people live in their environment. He later led Notre Dame's graduate urban design studio on the multi-year project After Burnham: The Notre Dame Plan of Chicago 2109, which he discusses in this episode. As Professor Bess puts it, urbanism is not just about walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods - rather, it encompasses the study of the entire region, including the relationship between the agricultural lands and what Aristotle called the polis. Cities We Live In is a study of what makes our favorite cities stand out, and in doing so conveying a need for a return to traditional design principles which make them so beloved. Not simply a history of urban form, Cities We Live In teaches us why good places matter.

We have Peter Michalsky from world-renowned Wadia & Associates on the show. Please join us in a conversation on the technologies that bring classic architecture to life.A flythrough of this Magnificent Greenwich Lakeside Estate. Click to see the full video.Since the establishment of Wadia Associates more than 45 years ago, Dinyar Wadia and his dedicated team of designers have earned a reputation for designing and building high-end homes, gardens, and interiors. Over the years, they have helped sculpt the local environment to become an important regional proponent of Classicism. Their skillful design sensibilities have provided a seamless fit of their traditionally-styled homes into the eclectic fabric of Fairfield County, Westchester County, Rhode Island, Southern California, Boulder, CO, and now, Florida. Although avowed New Classicists, Wadia Associates have a pluralistic approach to traditional design that is not rooted in a slavish imitation of the past. More appropriately, it is based upon reinterpreting the past and updating it for the present. And while all of their designs feature the classic proportions and exquisite details of houses from a bygone age, the firm is still able to incorporate all the amenities and needs of a modern American family. As Dinyar is fond of saying, “It is traditional architecture for the modern world.” Our guest is Peter Michalsky, Head of Marketing and Business Development for Wadia Associates. With over 40 years in the architect and planning industry, Wadia Associates has earned a reputation for designing and building high-end homes, gardens and interiors. When reputation is not enough, to win new business you need a technology edge.We asked Pete...Beyond using technology to communicate your designs, how else are you using technology in your projects?"Regarding tech, we're also getting a lot of requests for interesting features. We just completed a recessed flat screen on a lift that rises out of the patio for a home on the water in Greenwich. We're getting ton of requests for completely integrated home kits that incorporate security, HVAC, product automation, etc. We can expand on that with some interesting examples.""As for VHNW and UHNW, they are changing a bit. They are gravitating to bigger lots up here, with more outbuildings, guest quarters, sports complexes, and compound-like objectives. In Palm Beach, they are asking for more West Indies and Bermuda styles, because every other house is Mizner inspired Spanish/Moorish/Gothic styles and they want to be different. As classicists, we like both but we're seeing a trend. Everyone wants the indoors and outdoors to blend seamlessly, which has been going on for some time, but it is the first thing they talk about."Use the Meeting ID: http://zoom.us/j/92135931351  Or, binge watch on: Youtube.  Subscribe now: http://bit.ly/399yevLregister here Thursday, May 13 from 4:00-5:00pm

Based on their recent essays for the ABA Banking Journal, Leigh and Paletta explore how U.S. bank architecture developed over the past two centuries, why classical motifs became so dominant (to the extent that the portico of a Greco-Roman temple is the visual shorthand for banking) and how banks made the transition from classicism to modernism in the 20th century. Leigh and Paletta also evaluate the future of bank branch architecture in an era when an image search for “bank” results in a sea of smartphone pictures. Meanwhile, in a bonus clip, they discuss the role of bankers as architectural patrons. This episode is sponsored by Risk Proof, a PwC product.

The young architect Kristian Hoff-Andersen explains the appeal of classical architecture. Is it good because it is «traditional», or because it emulates nature and thus relates to human beings? Do we like it because it is "old-fashioned" or do we quite simply need timeless surroundings? Hoff Andersen shares amazing success stories about newly made classical buildings — drawing on examples from around the world. This conversation was hosted by Jan-Ove Tuv, and was produced by Bork S. Nerdrum, with assistance from Sebastian Salvo. The centerpiece was a reproduction of Thomas Cole's painting "The Architect's Dream". It is carved from cork from the torso down and the head and shoulders are made from small squares of Styrofoam that have a greenish hue.Emma Talbot lives and works in London and works primarily in drawing, painting and installation. She studied at the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design and the Royal College of Art, where she is now also a painting Tutor. Some Classicists are so passionate about Modernist architecture they create a well-financed, highly effective organization to point out the flaws of Modernist buildings and actively discourage new Modernist projects. Every Classicist we talk to mentions today’s guest, Catesby Leigh, who has written about architecture for over 30 years. He co-founded the National Classical Art Society, headed by past podcast guest Justin Shubow, which advocates the classical tradition in Federal buildings and monuments.  He's a gifted writer and essayist and organizer, and we're surprised he hasn't won the Henry Hope Reed Award, the Oscar of Classicism, because no one is more deserving. If they accept nominations from us Modernist heathens, we’d like to be first to put his name in the hat. Later in the show, we sing to, and listen to, the charming Lucy Woodward.

Season 3 of Paideia Today begins with the colossal figure of John Milton. Milton's Paradise Lost is arguably the greatest poem ever written, certainly the greatest in the English language. The church father Tertullian once famously asked, what does Athens have to do with Jerusalem? Milton's answer would be that theologically speaking it has nothing. Nonetheless, in terms of its literary expression, Milton's Puritanism is inseparably linked with his Classicism. At the same time, the epic form that he uses for his greatest work is transformed by the content of his theological convictions. This is both a work of the utmost religious piety and of aesthetic expression.

In 1919, two competing art movements went head-to-head in Paris. One was the Return to Order, a movement about purity and harmony. The other was Dada, a movement about chaos and destruction. Their collision would change the trajectory of Western art. Hugo Ball established the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, where Dada came to life in February 1916. In this photo, he's dressed in his "magic bishop" costume. The costume was so stiff and ungainly that Ball had to be carried on and off stage. You can hear the entire text of Ball's "Karawane" on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_8Wg40F3yo). You can also read the text (https://poets.org/poem/karawane). Marcel Duchamp arrived in New York to a hero's welcome, a far cry from the disdainful treatment he was receiving in France. He was hailed for his success at the 1913 Armory Show, where his painting "Nude Descending a Staircase" was the hit of the show. "Nude Descending a Staircase" was considered radical art, but it was still oil paint on canvas. Duchamp would soon leave even that much tradition behind. Francis Picabia was handsome, rich, dashing, and about as faithful as an alley cat. That he wasn't court martialed for neglecting his diplomat mission to Cuba for artistic shenanigans in New York was entirely due to his family's wealth and influence. He was also well known in New York for his visit there during the Armory Show. Picabia abandoned traditional painting for meticulous line drawings of mass-produced items, including this work, titled "Young American Girl in a State of Nudity." Duchamp horrified New Yorkers when he presented "Fountain" to an art exhibit as a work of sculpture. A urinal may not seem particularly shocking now, but it violated any number of taboos in 1917. While "Fountain" is generally atttributed to Duchamp, it is possible, although by no mean certain, that it was actually created by the Baroness Else von Freytag-Loringhoven. A German ex-pat, she was creating art out of ready-made objects more than a year before Duchamp and lived her life as a kind of non-stop performance art. Whatever her role in "Fountain," she deserves to be better remembered as a pioneering modernist. After he returned to Europe, Picabia's art became less disciplined and more outlandish. He titled this ink-blot "The Virgin Saint." Picabia also published a Dadaist journal, in which he published this work by Duchamp. It's a cheap postcard of the "Mona Lisa" to which he added a mustache. The title "L.H.O.O.Q. is a pun in French; it sounds like "she has a hot ass." Tzara and other Dadaists in Paris devoted themselves to events and performances. This is a handbill for a "Festival Dada" that took place on May 26, 1920. Tzara and Picabia are listed as performing, along with several other prominent Dadaists including Andre Breton, Louis Aragon, and Paul Eluard. These evenings became increasingly frantic and nihilistic as Dada wore on. By 1919, Pablo Picasso part of the artistic establishment and no longer a radical on the edges of society. In 1911/1912, Picasso paintings looked like this--this is "Ma Jolie," a dense, complicated, frankly intimidating Cubist painting. Ten years later, he painted this work, Woman in White. With its clarity, beauty, and nods to tradition, it is a prime example of Picasso's embrace of neo-classicism after the Great War. The impulse to create clear, simple, ordered art existed in many European countries. In the Netherlands, Piet Mondrian worked in the Neoplasticist movement creating his iconic grid paintings. This is "Composition No. 2" from 1920. At the same time, in Germany the Bauhaus was established. As a school of arts and crafts, it taught a stripped-down, clean aesthetic that applied to everything from architecture to furniture design, industrial design to graphic design. This poster advertising a 1923 exhibition is a good example of Bauhaus design and typography. The Surrealist movement arose out of Dada's ashes in the mid- to late-1920s. It combined the traditional painting technique of neo-Classicism with the bizarre imagery of Dada. Salvador Dali's "Persistence of Memory," for example, is a technical masterpiece, with masterful execution. It's also impossible and, frankly, disturbing. T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land" gives the impression of randomness, of lines picked out of a coat pocket. In fact, it is painstakingly constructed and shows as much technical skill as Dali's clocks. You can read the poem (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/47311/the-waste-land), or listen to Alec Guinness read it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hcj4G45F9pw)--or maybe do both at the same time. This meme was created in 2013 by cartoonist KC Green. It captures the Dadaist attitude that shows up in popular culture a great deal here in 2019--a sense that the world is really weird right now. Come and see us record a live episode at Dulwich Picture Gallery on the 26th June! We'd love to meet you!Modernist Architecture has always had more than its fair share of critics. In this episode, the first of a two parter, we discuss the reactionary, counter-revolutionary opposition to modernism in Britain during the interwar period. First, comes an examination of the stodgy, flag-waving, imperialist Classicism of the Edwardian era, which Luke thinks includes some of the worst architecture in Britain. One of the perpetrators of that style, Reginald Blomfield, wrote a patriotic screed against the continental, ‘cosmopolitan’ Modern architecture, which he subtly titled ‘Modernismus.’ We also examine Lutyens’ review of ‘Towards a New Architecture,’ a critique of Corbusier’s theory, but also a refutation of modernism as an appropriate style for living in. Lastly we consider the slightly outlandish ‘England and the Octopus’ by the eccentric architect Clough William Ellis, famous for designing the town sized folly of Portmeirion in North Wales. Fruity characters, problematic tropes and anxiety about a declining Empire abound. In the bonus episode we will discuss the Evelyn Waugh's 'Decline and Fall.'This episode is sponsored by The Article Trade Program.Edited by Matthew Lloyd Roberts. Vienna Hofburg - Imperial Apartments, Sisi Museum, Silver Collection

The first – and for many years the best – porcelain manufactory in Europe was established at Meissen in 1710. This Meissen service made around 1775 is striking for its exquisite floral painting. The shapes of the individual pieces are good examples of “Baroque Classicism”. While the bulbous tureens with finials in the shape of fruits still seem to belong to the Baroque era, the perforated fruit basket already displays elements of Classicism with its predilection for the formal repertoire of Antiquity.www.hofburg-wien.at | Download Tour-Guide (PDF)© by Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.
