Today we're talking about voting tech and the push in some areas to move away from machines and go back to hand counting ballots. A legal battle is brewing in Georgia over a new rule requiring ballots be hand counted on election night to ensure the tally matches electronic records. Arizona has added a similar requirement. The issue has become particularly mired in misinformation in recent years, with some election deniers questioning the security of the tech used in our elections. While some may believe hand counts are more accurate, the number of jurisdictions across the country relying on them on election night has been steadily dropping. Marketplace’s Meghan McCarty Carino spoke with Pam Smith, president and CEO of the nonpartisan organization Verified Voting, about why the practice of counting ballots by hand is waning.

“DRE” is the acronym in election-speak. It stands for direct-recording electronic voting machines … the kind that record votes directly into a computer’s memory, often with no paper trail. In an effort to boost security and ensure more reliable counting of ballots across the country, officials have been replacing them with voting machines that produce a paper backup. And there has been noticeable progress on this front. According to a recent report from the nonprofit organization Verified Voting and the Brennan Center for Justice, in 2016 about 22% of registered voters were in jurisdictions that used DREs. By 2020, that figure had fallen to 9% and could drop considerably further this year. Marketplace’s Lily Jamali spoke with Megan Maier, co-author of the Verified Voting report, about replacing what’s left of these outdated machines and bringing that number down to zero.

The summer is over, which means it's now mud season. Stand by for slush season. We may need to buy a mat for the studio. In the first hour, SKOR North's Judd Zulgad talks about how polarizing Kirk Cousins is and breaks down the win over Chicago, and KSTP's Chris Egert talks about the mayor of Minneapolis' plans to construct a third police precinct. Hour #2 has Ms. Pat join the show to talk about her new show "Ms. Pat Settles It", where she's the judge for real-world cases that debuts on BET October 18 at 10PM ET/9PM CT In hour #3 Kristyn Burtt discusses how times are changing. The royal family isn't as royal, Disney isn't as affordable, and even Will Smith's sexuality is being called into question. The question is, how long are people going to care about any of it? On the Family, Tim Lammers talks cults. No, not that kind of cult. The new kind that centers around musicians. In the past, a charismatic individual would lure followers with promises of salvation. Now the promise is for a concert they may or may not show up to on time. Modern cults are lame. Precincts, Prejudice, and MurderInterview with Joel A. RobinsonIn this My Life Now episode, Dallas interviews Joel A. Robinson, author of "Precincts, Prejudice, and Murder".About Joel A. Robinson:Born in 1934 during the Great Depression in New York City, my early life was marked by adversity. After my father's death when I was two, we moved to Atlanta, where I encountered prejudice at a young age. My only childhood friend, Ham Bone, lived near my grandparents' house. Despite our friendship, my uncle warned me about the South's social hierarchy due to our Jewish identity. I learned about prejudice when I defied segregation on a streetcar. These experiences profoundly influenced me, shaping my perspective on discrimination. Ham Bone later became a doctor, leaving a remarkable legacy beyond my ability to fully describe.About Precincts, Prejudice, and Murder:This fictional work explores the very real challenges women face in police work and the broader workplace, set against the backdrop of murder. It delves into the motivations behind heinous crimes and raises questions about gender equality in this field. The story also examines whether an excessive focus on gender equality over merit could compromise public safety, drawing inspiration from Hobbes's social contract theory. It introduces a Faustian bargain where individuals are tempted to commit murder for financial gain. The 19th Precinct plays a central role in the narrative, while other precincts become involved in the unfolding conflict. Please note that this is a work of fiction, and any resemblance to real people or events is purely coincidental. This engaging narrative delves into societal dilemmas, moral questions, and the complexities of crime and law enforcement.Buy the Book:Precincts, Prejudice, and Murder: https://www.amazon.com/Precincts-Prejudice-Murder-Joel-Robinson/dp/1088133495 Thank you for listening to and supporting the My Life Now podcast show. This episode contains testimony from public hearings of the Mollen Commission, a board established in 1992 to investigate police corruption in New York City. First is testimony from rogue cop Michael Dowd, who agreed to appear before the commission after being turned in by his partner. Dowd describes to commissioners how he and other officers at Brooklyn's 75th and 94th Precincts began colluding with drug dealers to rob their rivals and sell cocaine, finally graduating to extortion, grand larceny, conspiracy, drug trafficking and racketeering. Mrs. Custis said, “My recommendation would be to split precincts that are larger than 3500 active registered voters in any one political party, in a precinct, in such a way that would create the least number of ballot styles.” Supervisor Mallory stated, “I appreciate you working with all parties, Republican, Democrat, Independent, and Libertarian. Dr. Ken Harris, former police lieutenant joins the show to give his perspective on how officers are debriefed after a killing of one of their own. Also shares how adjacent agencies help out by filling in their shifts.
All reporters know that investigations can be long, expensive and eventually fruitless, which is why more and more papers no longer bother with them. But ProPublica goes beyond that and probes the skull beneath the skin of PR. So when reporter Brett Murphy heard about how police forces and prosecutors were using "911 call analysis” — linguistic quirks to determine that the person calling was in fact guilty of the crime — he looked farther. It was clearly all junk and no science. Still, the FBI was encouraging gullible police departments to pay its inventor $3,500 a session to inculcate cops and advise them whether a 911 caller was guilty. Some prosecutors know there is no reliable foundation but disguise it in court to use against unwitting defendants anyway. Brett explains how ProPublica works and how he found that pseudoscience is running rampant through America's justice system. ProPublica is "an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism with moral force. We dig deep into important issues, shining a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust — and we stick with those issues as long as it takes to hold power to account.” Brooklyn-based Brett Murphy has been with ProPublica since last May after seven years of reporting for a variety of media outlets. -- This briefing is made possible by the Foreign Press Foundation. Data Futurology - Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence From Industry Leaders
This week on the Data Futurology podcast, we have the special privilege of talking to the top analytics leader in Australia, according to IAPA (the Institute of Analytics Professionals of Australia). Brad Petry, the Executive Director – Operations, Insights, and Digital Channels at the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions in the Victorian Government, was awarded this accolade for his work in leveraging AI and machine learning to overcome biases in the recruitment process. He spends time on the podcast this week talking about what that means for the department, and the implications it has for recruitment more broadly. Over the past 18 months, Petry has been driving a digital transformation program across the department, something that has been made even more challenging because it has happened through the pandemic and because the data that he and his team handle is needed on a daily basis. There was no room for downtime or mistakes while the transformation was executed. At the same time, there was an enormous opportunity within the department to leverage automation and AI with data – in many cases for the first time – to improve the reliability of the data and productivity across the department. As Petry says, the key to success is to remember that it's the data that's the important element, rather than the software or context that the data is held and analysed within. “When we started, we said to ourselves that the thing we knew, and what was going to persist, was the data,” he said. “The technology and programs will come and go, but the data is something that will always be there and everything comes back to the data.” For a deep dive into driving a transformation agenda with data, tune in to this week's podcast! Enjoy the show! Thank you to our sponsor, Talent Insights Group! It started with a center for children in North Sydney, in the meantime the number of Froebel Kindergarten branches has increased to 5. The newer centers are both deliberately located in so-called precincts, corporate complexes, with some companies also partnering with Froebel, and their employees also joining Froebel, thus also further promoting the aim to instigate hunger for knowledge and independent learning. We hear from Lucie Maucher, Communications and Partnerships Manager about the latest developments, expansions and the many awards Froebel teams have just won for their participation in the 2022 Little Scientists Early STEM Awards.

Early voting for the Texas primaries starts on February 14th & Election Day is March 1st. The ballot is pretty long, but if you care about climate change, health care, and criminal justice reform, there are two really important local races on your ballot - the Travis County Commissioners Democratic primary(Precincts 2 & 4). To explain it all, Austin Common Radio Hour host Amy Stansbury sat down with all the candidates running (Brigid Shea, Bob Libal, Margaret Gómez, Susanna Ledesma-Woody). Episode Show Notes This episode was recorded LIVE during the 2020 Digital Innovation Forum (#DIF2020), organized by the Department of Job, Precincts, and Regions, State of Victoria, Australia. When the opportunity arose, I immediately thought of Catherine Ball as a perfect guest for this partnership between The Job Hunting Podcast and #DIF2020. She's full of energy and generous in sharing her ideas, knowledge, and advice. There was very little prompting needed from me! Catherine is one of the most prolific, efficient professionals and entrepreneurs I know. She also blends entrepreneurialism, academia, and corporate life seamlessly, at least from the outside. I am sure there's a great deal of hard work going on to keep all her engines going; she gives us a little bit of insight into how she manages it all. This episode is one to be enjoyed and listened to a couple of times. It's also full of optimism and hope for an amazing future of work. Catherine is currently promoting a masterclass on Influence and Leadership, which if you are lucky you may be able to access for free using this link below - if not it's still pretty cheap, so I recommend you invest it in if you are interested in managing a portfolio career or starting your own business consulting on the side: Click here for details. Episode Show Notes Alex Naoumidis is the CEO of Mindset Health, a startup he founded with his brother Chris in Melbourne Australia. It now has 2 apps on the market: Mindset (for mental health) and Nerva (for irritable bowel syndrome, which is often triggered by stress and anxiety), but its ambitions are much higher. Mindset Health is a company brand with the vision of managing multiple products addressing chronic conditions with app-based hypnotherapy. Since it's inception in 2018, Mindset has been building a loyal following of fans, like yours truly, has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Tech Crunch, and other news outlets, interested in their digital health innovation and hypnotherapy programs. It has also attracted the interest of investors: In May this year, the startup announced it had raised $1.1 million in funding from investors across the U.S. and Australia. The first half of our conversation was about the startup world: how Alex landed in the world of innovation and entrepreneurialism, about working in startups and building a team of diverse professionals. Then we focused on wellbeing in 2020, what/how and if COVID has influenced Mindset's next steps and growth, and what Alex can tell us to help us perform at our best during the lockdown. This episode was the first-ever episode of The Job Hunting Podcast recorded LIVE with an audience. It was one of four special episodes designed to be part of the Victorian 2020 Digital Innovation Festival, or #DIF2020. DIF is an initiative of the Department of Jobs, Precincts, and Regions. In Melbourne, we are very proud of our innovation precincts, especially when it comes to health innovation. And Mindset is on a league of its own. Timestamps to guide your listening: 07:54 – Alex tells us how he became a start-up entrepreneur. 12:36 – His strengths as a leader and as a professional to pursue a career as an entrepreneur. 14.38 – How has it changed having people working with and for him. 16:15 – How Alex chooses people to work with him. 18:09 – The differences in leadership styles: Alex and his brother and Co-Founder Chris. 18:57 – People coming from traditional sectors to work for start-ups. 22:18 – How is a hypnotherapy app perceived in Australia? 24:20 – Statistics of places in the world with most downloads of Mindset App. 25:11 – How hypnotherapy by app works? 27:18 – Has the pandemic changed the future plans for Mindset Health and digital health in general? 30:20 – Mindset growth plans. 33:13 – Tips for job hunters who are feeling very anxious about how to manage their mental health. 37:49 – How Mindset Health apps work and what is the most popular program? 38:50 – What's next for Mindset Health? 41:30 – Where Alex' sees himself 20 years from now. 42:35 – Is it viable to be based in Australia with the kind of start-up business they created? Three weeks into his new job as commanding officer of Manhattan's 20th precinct, Captain Timothy J. Malin stared at a map on his computer screen, puzzled. It showed his jurisdiction carved up by streets and parks, with the southern edge encased in an ominous shade of red. For decades, the New York Police Department has used real-time statistics to chart spikes in violence and calibrate police activity across the city.
