In this episode Ian & AL remember one of the magical nights of Irish boxing - Bernard Dunne v Ricardo Cordoba - incredibly 16 years ago this week! The lads also look back over TJ Doheny v Nick Ball & the controversy that followed, Mick Conlan's comeback & future plans aswell as all the fights from Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick's Day. We look back over the phenomenal career of one of boxing's greatest EVER, George Foreman who passed away recently after a career that saw him fight Muhammad Ali, Joe Fraizer, Ken Norton, Ron Lyle, Gerry Cooney, Evander Holyfield, Tommy Morrison, Jimmy Young, Axel Schultz & Michael Moorer. A total of 76 wins and 5 losses.
Judging me, life beats you up, apartment adventures, some cardinal rules of living in Los Angeles, pillow talk, the life and death of George Foreman, the troubled Tommy Morrison, nicotine you bastard, alcohol you bastard, fucking up Joseph Wambaugh's name (sorry Joseph), the grizzled James Garner, the sad tale of Margot Kidder, and the plot thickens. Stuff mentioned: Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), Pavement Slanted and Enchanted (1992), Billy Joel "I Go to Extremes" (1989), George Foreman vs. Michael Moorer (November 4, 1994), George Foreman vs. Tommy Morrison (June 7, 1993), Rocky V (1990), Airplane (1980), Joseph Wambaugh The Glitter Dome (1981), The Glitter Dome (1984), The Rockford Files (1974-1980), Superman: The Movie (1978), Twilight (1998), and The Beef Industry Council and Beef Board "I Eat the Evidence" (1988 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NZqx2T4zlk).

It is almost here! The final men's major of the year is nigh and Brendan and Andy are full of energy for this beefy but constantly entertaining Open, or British Open, preview podcast. They begin with some thoughts on what makes the Open special, relying on player testimony, their own interactions, and some of the challenges of Royal Troon that they cannot wait to see in action. They discuss some of their favorite and not-so-favorite storylines, including the heavyweight contenders like Rory, Rahm, Bryson, Ludvig, Xander, and of course, Scottie. Their usual major tradition of picking out best and worst tee times goes down a winding path on Tiger Woods being “too busy” to be Ryder Cup captain, Tommy Morrison, Dan Bradbury, Just-a-Guy statuses, and much more. A new set of games-within-the-game is drawn up pitting some titans against each other. Finally, and after a lengthy chat about the best berries, they pick winners for The Open.

“The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.” ~ Muhammad AliThis Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. From Ring Conqueror to Hollywood CanvasForget the Rocky Balboa wannabes. Meet Michael Bentt. A man who claimed the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Heavyweight Championship title (1993) and would later star in the boxing classic “Ali” as Sonny Liston (2001).Our conversation reveals an intelligent, complex man whose life defied expectations; a tapestry of grit, resilience, and seized opportunity.Roots of a Champion:* Aviation Aspirations: A bright student at New York's Aviation High School, Bentt harbored dreams of soaring as a pilot. Baseball, however, was his first love, a passion nurtured by his supportive father.* Fistic Footsteps: Fate had other plans. His father, a former boxer and aficionado, saw raw talent and a fighting spirit in young Michael and steered him toward the ring. This wasn't just about toughening up; it was about channeling raw energy building discipline and elevating his stature. The Ring:* The Paradox of Safety: Inside the squared circle, amidst the roars and stinging jabs, Bentt found his sanctuary. The controlled chaos, the rhythmic dance of offense and defense, became a refuge from the uncertainties of life outside.* A Crown and a Crushing Blow: His amateur accolades are legendary, but it was in 1993 that Bentt etched his name in boxing history, a huge underdog, he captured the WBO Heavyweight Championship with a thunderous first-round KO of Tommy Morrison. The subsequent brutal loss in his first title defense, however, could have broken him.Canvas to Canvas:* A Writing and Guiding Hand: Enter Thomas Hauser, a well-known boxing writer who saw beyond the knockout. Thomas showed sincere concern for the former champ and became Bentt's unlikely mentor providing much-needed guidance and contacts along the way.* Reinvention in the Spotlight: Seizing multiple opportunities, Hollywood welcomed Bentt and he appeared in dozens of films, adding depth to roles like Sonny Liston in the iconic “Ali” alongside Will Smith. The Man Unmasked:Michael Bentt's story transcends the ropes and the silver screen. It's a beautiful tapestry and a testament to the human spirit – its capacity to find a way; to arise from life's unexpected storms, weather the blows, and emerge with greater wisdom and grace. It's a powerful story (EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY) that affirms, “Regardless of the last punch you took, the fight remains, and another round is coming quickly!”Ding. Ding. Recently described at The Godfather of PED testing in boxing, Dr Flip Homansky was a physician on the Nevada State Athletic Commission for some of the biggest fights in history. Dr Homansky also served on the NSAC Medical Advisory Board Chairman having worked at the Chief Ringside Physician for almost three decades. He is the former Association of Boxing Commissions vice-president and current vice-president of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association. Fascinatingly, he allowed Evander Holyfield to box on against Mike Tyson in the infamous Bite Fite (from a medical perspective), he was there for the Fan Man incident when Bowe fought Holyfield, and he's seen fighters at their best and worst over the years. He's been in the locker rooms with the likes of Tommy Morrison and Marvin Hagler and he is one of the sport's most-respected voices. It has been said: "There is probably no one in the world with more medical experience as it relates to boxing."

Rocky V is a textbook example of a franchise hanging on too long. Without any more mountains to climb, Stallone took the titular character back to his roots. Unfortunately, that journey isn't a very compelling one. Rocky V has a lot to say—spotlighting the transactional nature of sports media, the devastating effects of head trauma, and how sports places profits over people; but none of it, sadly, is done particularly well. Instead, we get a muddled movie overstuffed with subplots that fails to ever find a clear focus. Lost in all of it is the central narrative of Rocky sacrificing valuable time with his actual son to train Tommy Gunn. Gunn, of course, is not who Rocky believes him to be. He's petulant, ungrateful, and willing to cast Rocky aside with just the slightest hint of greener pastures. Because so much of this is jumbled in other nonsense and weighed down by a sub-par script, we hardly care when it comes time for them to fight. Critics agreed. They threw haymakers at Rocky V, knocking it out with a paltry 31% on Rotten Tomatoes with 39 reviews. It even received seven Razzie nominations. And if Stallone thought the fans would never turn their backs on the beloved character, well, yo, Adrian, this movie did it. Now, sit back, concuss yourself with a few Arrogant Bastard Ales from Stone Brewing, and slip the jab! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Bling Blake, and the J-Man from the Double Turn Podcast are suffering from far too many blows to the head! Golf talk live from Austin, Texas every week with hosts Ed Clements & Scotty Sayers. Guests this week are UT golf coach John Fields, South African freshman Christian Maas and Dallas freshman Tommy Morrison.
One of the 100 darkest moments in pop culture series. Tommy "The Duke" Morrison was a rising boxing star in the late 1980s into the early 1990s who famously held a version of the World Boxing Championship, defeating George Foreman. Tommy Morrison also got a break in acting by appearing as the character Tommy "The Machine" Gunn in Sylvester Stallone's 1990 Rocky V movie. But Tommy Morrison's lifestyle caused his star to tumble and a failed HIV test effectively ended his boxing career despite the fact that Morrison protested and denied having HIV or AIDS up to his death at age of 44 in 2013.
Is Rocky V really that bad? Let's talk about it.

Recorded 4.27.22 at the Punchline Philly in Philadelphia, PAOn this episode, it's the out-RAGEOUS live show from Philly the guys did at the start of this year where they're talking about the incredibly sad, Christmas-ish-set sequel, Rocky V! Written by Sly himself, shouldn't the producers have honored his wishes and kept in the original ending with Rocky getting beaten to death in the street? How is Paulie not murdered by the entire family after this financial fiasco? Why didn't Rocky think to do commercials in Japan or sell that robot to the military for cash? And is the Italian Stallion going back into his son's room and checking out that sexy doodle of the French teacher again? PLUS: What if Paulie was possessed by the demon Pazuzu from The Exorcist?! Rocky V stars Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Sage Stallone, Tommy Morrison, Richard Gant, Tony Burton, Kevin Connolly, and. You don't own me! You don't own me! Nobody does! I want my respect." - Tommy Gunn Join our Discord https://discord.gg/jDrUtNcRq2 And we're back! This time looking at the 90s action films of Sylvester Stallone. Scott and Craig kick off season 2 (Kyle is on one of his top secret CIA missions so can't join us this season) with an in-depth look at what many consider to be the worst entry in the Rocky. But is it though? Yes, it turns out it still very much is but that doesn't mean it is not fun to talk about. Not at all. Listen as we talk about how the film hilariously ham-fisted attempts to bring the series back to it roots, just how inexperienced real-life boxer Tommy Morrison was an actor before taking the role of Tommy Gunn and how Don King probably should of sued given how much George Washington Duke (Richard Gant) is based on him. Elsewhere in the episode Scott and Craig are amused by Tommy's obsession with not being a robot, the worlds shortest teen rebellion phase and the fact anyone would trust Paulie (Burt Young) with there money. Plus, Scott is mightily confused as to how Craig can be a Stallone fan and not have seen the Rocky sequels (before this episode he had only seen the original and Creed).

In the early 1990s, Tommy Morrison, a young roughneck from Jay, Oklahoma, burst onto the boxing scene to become one of the most controversial fighters of his era. Handsome, eloquent, and dynamic, Morrison parlayed destructive knockout power and a homespun personality into celebrity status throughout middle America, where boxing rarely prospered. But it was his starring role in Rocky V alongside Sylvester Stallone that propelled him to stardom–and ultimately led to his tragic downfall. His brush with Hollywood fame triggered a limitless appetite for parties, liquor, and sex. When Morrison was shockingly diagnosed with HIV in 1996, his life imploded, and his subsequent descent into drugs, prison, bigamy, and conspiracy theories made Morrison notorious long after his glory days had ended. In The Duke: The Life and Lies of Tommy Morrison (Hamilcar, 2022), Carlos Acevedo chronicles Morrison's tumultuous life from his days as a teenaged Toughman contestant, to his victory over George Foreman, to his struggles with HIV and depression, to his death at forty-four, when his delusions finally overtook him. Paul Knepper covered the Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. Rocky V is a 1990 American sports drama film and is the fifth installment in the Rocky franchise, starring Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire. Real-life boxer Tommy Morrison, stars as Tommy Gunn, a talented yet raw boxer. And Stallone's real-life son Sage played Robert Balboa, whose relationship with his famous father is explored. After Stallone directed the second through fourth films in the series, Rocky V saw the return of John G. Avildsen, whose direction of Rocky won him an Academy Award for Best Director. Reception to the film was generally mixed so we're here to deliver the final blow to Rocky V.

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD "You don't own me! You don't own me! Nobody does! I want my respect." - Tommy Gunn And we're back! "All '90s Action, All The Time" is produced by Scott Murphy, Kyle Hintz and Craig Draheim. Music by Elyssa Vulpes. Editing by Scott Murphy.

Technically Donovan "Razor" Ruddock's career lasted from 1982 to 2015 -- more than 30 years. In truth he had a long layoff from 2001 to 2015, but even so, as an active fighter, Ruddock ran the gauntlet of 1980s and 90s heavyweights that took over the division. Michael Dokes, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Tommy Morrison... Ruddock didn't win them all, but he was there. We have a fantastic episode for you today. We are joined by former WBO boxing champion Michael Bentt. Michael, star of Netflix's documentary series, Losers, was open, extremely honest, and absolutely fascinating. Michael describes his dislike of boxing, being pushed by his overbearing father, and what it was like to succeed at something, without loving it. Michael also talks about his victory of Tommy Morrison, being Evander Holyfield's sparring partner, and moving on to the world of acting. Michael would later play Sonny Liston in Ali, work with Clint Eastwood, and much much more. Have a listen! We also play some Verbal Shenanigans trivia, talk about some strange gigs Scott had, and learn how Mike lost his keys. Check it out.

Listen to the inside stories from the set of Rocky V, including how Tommy broke a stuntman's orbital bone by accident and learn just how much Tommy got paid for his role as Tommy "The Machine" Gunn. Tommy talks about his boxing career and his path to becoming World Champion. How close was the rumored fight with Mike Tyson? Tune in and find out. After a career retrospect, the conversation drifted to strange territories, with Tommy discussing how he believes telekinesis was responsible for the Egyptian Pyramids, his believe in the human ability to re-grow limbs and his claims that he had TELEPORTED himself! Despite being diagnosed as HIV positive, Tommy Morrison was adamant that he did not have the disease and that the disease DID NOT EXIST! Kris & David are back with another episode of Between the Sheets! We discuss the week-plus that was February 15-22, 1996, a show that was requested by one of our Patrons, Andy Linton. You can have the opportunity to have us do a week that you want if you join our Patreon and put down $25. We start the show with WCW, talking about their rapidly improving house show business and a wild Monday Nitro, which was par for the course in this era for some reason. We also talk about a crazy UFC PPV in Puerto Rico, Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue regaining AJPW's unified world tag team titles, AAA almost getting kicked out of Acapulco, Tommy Morrison telling the world that he was HIV positive and how that would affect all combat sports, Brian Pillman making his debut at the ECW Arena in a wild spectacle, the WWF invading the WMC studio in Memphis, and IN YOUR HOUSE 6 among other topics in a loaded WWF section, including some long-buried details of the Billionaire Ted skits and resulting fallout. All that and much more on yet another action packed episode of Between the Sheets!Timestamps:0:00:00 WCW1:01:31 UFC1:52:02 Int'l: AJPW, NJPW, BattlARTS, FMW, SPWF, AJW, GAEA, AAA, CMLL, & Tijuana2:26:24 Classic Commercial Break2:31:20 Tommy Morrison2:59:43 Other USA: ECW, SSW, United Wrestling, USWA, & North American All-Star4:33:52 WWF6:09:30 Patreon Preview: Joel Goodhart gambles on a banquet celebrating Ric FlairTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron.
