Musicians, artists, actors and authors (and any other creatives I haven't nominated) have long taken pseudonyms. Maybe a more exciting name will sell an image, maybe it's to have some semblance of privacy, maybe it's to separate themselves from their past, …any number of reasons. Avant garde art collective The Residents took things beyond name change – they maintained complete anonymity. Welcome to episode 111 of See Hear Podcast. The Residents are a band, multimedia artists, theatrical performers….and anonymous. Long time fans claim to be aware of their identities, but putting that aside, the band subscribed to the Theory of Obscurity that maintains that better art is created when the artist is anonymous and free of audience expectations. The band has always performed with masks and not given names….not even pseudonyms. They've been creating music for over 50 years, and have released multitudes of albums – original compositions and deconstructions of 20th century standards from the likes of The Rolling Stones, James Brown and George Gershwin. Trying to define what they do beyond the catch-all tag of “avant- garde” is ridiculous. For some, it can be music that is difficult or challenging….and for others, it can be a breath of fresh air. For this episode of See Hear, Tim and Maurice discuss the 2015 film “Theory of Obscurity: A Film About The Residents” directed by Don Hardy, its themes, the music of the Residents, and whether there's something actually to the theory or if it's bunk. On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti and changed the course of millions of lives. International aid and aid workers descended on Haiti to help in any way they could. One of those people driven to help was American actor and filmmaker Sean Penn. CITIZEN PENN chronicles the moment Sean Penn and his team of volunteers landed in Haiti just days after the earthquake struck and the ten years since. For Penn, Haiti changed his life. He went there for what he thought was a two-week aid mission to drop off supplies, help doctors provide immediate medical care, and then get out … get back to his normal life. Instead, he stayed and created an organization called J/P HRO (now CORE) that took over management duties for the largest camp for displaced people in the entire country. This feature-length documentary delivers unparalleled access to one of America's most polarizing figures. CITIZEN PENN offers viewers an intimate, honest, and self reflective look into the triumphs and challenges of a man who decided to do something. He got involved in a way few celebrity activists ever will. Director Don hardy joins us to talk about his first impressions of the devastation in Port-Au-Prince, the complicated relationship Haiti has with America and France and the dogged tenacity of Sean Penn to do the right thing. The Jeremy White Podcast presents Linda Perry! Iconic Singer-Songwriter, Producer and Pop Culture shape shifter Linda Perry releases her own music for the first time in over 15 years. Perry best known for her groundbreaking song-writing career for artists such as Pink, Adelle, Christina Aguilera, etc has now set her sights on film and tv lending her musical prowess to two significant documentaries. 90’s child star Soleil Moon Frye has created an original Hulu documentary, KID 90 about the coming of age. Composed of hundreds of hours of real footage as a kid in that era serving as a blueprint of Frye’s life. At the end of kid 90, a 40 something Soleil Moon Frye is confronted by a letter she wrote at 16 years old. Asking her now self a list of questions and hoping she feels loved. Perry was inspired to confront those questions by writing THE LETTER which the video has premiered on Consequence of Sound. Perry asked Director, Don Hardy to shoot the video as she knew he would deliver something beautiful. “The colors were influenced by the movie projections that filled the room and that consumed my body. My studio was the backdrop to capture this raw and emotional performance. The visual evokes the feeling that then transcends. I was able to create this cathartic score that amplified the raw emotion that was unveiled through Soleil's journalistic POV. I feel proud of what I was able to create, and I am honored that Soleil Moon Frye let me take this journey,” says Perry. PLEASE LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE! We've got the cream of the crop and the pick of the litter this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to our guests SANTINO PANICO, DANA NACHMAN, and DON HARDY. First up is SANTINO PANICO. Sports fans may know Santino best from his days as an All-American on the gridiron or most recently as a marathon runner, but what few may know is that Santino proves himself to be an accomplished storyteller and filmmaker with the documentary, FROM THE GROUND UP. Focusing on his journey from meat eating football player to a marathoning vegan, on this freshman directorial journey, Santino opens our eyes into a world of "plant-based" eating. Hear the passion and enthusiasm in Santino's voice as he talks about not only the whats and whys of plant-based eating but the whats and whys and hows of real grassroots filmmaking from self-financing to corraling interview subjects to editing to licensing/clearances (a real testament to Santino's conviction in making this documentary is his patience in obtaining clearance from the NFL). But get ready for cuteness at the mid point of the show when we welcome DANA NACHMAN and DON HARDY as they talk about their latest documentary PICK OF THE LITTER. Many may know Dana and Don best from their documentary BATKID BEGINS, but once you see PICK OF THE LITTER, tongues will be wagging with praise as they take us on the journey of five precious puppies in training for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Directors and cinematographers will appreciate hearing Don talk about camera selection and jury-rigging gear and shooting puppy POV, while both expound on the process of working with Guide Dogs for the Blind, shooting schedules over a two year time period, logistics of multi-city locations, editing, and more. And while we had to cut short our exclusive interview clip of composer Alexandre Desplat talking THE SHAPE OF WATER last week, we've got it for you now in full. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
