Have you ever been tricked? Fooled? Bamboozled? Certainly everyone has experienced being deceived at least once. And usually it's not a very pleasant feeling. It can be rather frustrating, and, well, humiliating. That being said, have you ever tricked someone else? Again, most people have. That's probably why there are so many stories about people being tricked. In this tale, Epaminandus is a young boy who gets sent to his grandmother's house when he's simply too much for his mother to handle. I'm sure many mothers out there can relate and be grateful to grandparents for helping out with their children. However, when Epaminandus's grandmother sends him home with a gift, he always finds a way to mess it up before it reaches his mother. But this won't stop his family from loving him anyway.  “Goldylocks” by Mark Binder from A Chanukah Present (6:50)Mark Binder is an author and storyteller with more than 20 published books and 20 years of performance experience. Today he shares with us his telling of “Goldylocks”, but instead of Goldylocks running into a house of three bears, she wonders into a house of three bubbies. Bubbies, for those who don't know, are grandmothers! So this story both playfully and lovingly reflects many things we find so unique and wonderful about our own grandmothers.  “With My Own Two Hands” by Jenni Cargill-Strong from Reaching For the Moon (3:04)Jenni Cargill-Strong is a storyteller who believes in the power of storytelling to make the world a better place. This song is about how much of a positive impact one person can make.

In this story from Ms. Strauss, you'll learn how day and night came to be.      "Why the Sky is Far Away" by Liz Weir from Here, There and Everywhere (4:08)In an episode featuring stories about lessons learned from the natural world - myths and legends about plants, animals, and other natural phenomena - here's another story explaining how something came to be the way it is. This one from West Africa is from Liz Weir, a longtime friend of The Appleseed from Ireland, and is about why the sky is far away.  "Giggly Biggly and the Invitation" by Jim Weiss from Animal Tales (9:08)Here's a little piece from Jim Weiss that features Giggly Biggly, a polar bear, as well as other delightful animals including a raccoon and a delivery kangaroo. It's a story about a wedding invitation, a party, and a new outfit just right for the occasion. It's a story you're sure to enjoy 'biggly'.  "The Grasshopper and the Ants" by Donna Washington from A Tureen of Tales (8:33) Only Donna Washington could tell another storyteller's story, in this case Aesop, and make it her own. Here's Donna's rendition of "The Grasshopper and the Ants" from Aesop's Fables. Donna's story is about hard work and it recognizes that there's room for just about everyone.  "The Small-Tooth Dog" by Priscilla Howe from 5 Stories (6:41)Up next is a live recording of a story from Priscilla Howe called "The Small-Tooth Dog" about a talking dog who saves a man from a band of robbers. "Monkey and Frog” by Laura Simms from Four Legged Tales: Animal Stories From Here and Away (4:05)Laura Simms has collected animals stories from all over the world. And you're sure to recognize this story from West Africa, or at least elements of it. This is a story about a monkey who is a great cook, manages a home well, and has a friend who is a frog. But Mr. Frog is lazy. So it sounds a little bit like the old story of "The Grasshopper and the Ants", the story we brought you earlier from Donna Washington. The truth is, some of the stories that we love the most from one place have echoes in stories all over the world. We hope this story reminds you of other stories you know and love.

And in fact, in this story about a disgusting recipe for stew, there are even a few kid performers, led by Apple Seed favorite Donna Washington.  “Zombie Boy” by Octavia Sexton from Appalachian Haint Tales (5:59)A lot of the stories that Octavia Sexton tells are 'Jack Tales', like Jack and the Beanstalk or Jack the Giant Killer. This next story is fashioned after some of those Jack Tales. And speaking of stories made up by kids, this next tale was written by Octavia Sexton's grandson and it's called "Zombie Boy".  “The Blood-Covered Vampire” by Richard Martin from The Well of the World's End and other Tales (2:01)And now for a few stories that are really just jokes dressed up like scary stories. This first one is from England-born, Germany-based storyteller, Richard Martin about a seriously un-scary group of blood-thirsty vampires.  “The Voice in the Graveyard” by Big Joe Pagliuca from Spooky Ooky (9:06)This next story-with-a-punchline story is from "Big" Joe Pagliuca. The moniker "Big" Joe exists because that's how his preschool class could differentiate him from "Little" Joe, one of his students. Now generally, if you hear a spooky voice emanating from a graveyard, it's safe to say you should steer clear of said graveyard. Not true in this story, though.  “Long Bony Finger” by Liz Weir from Boom Chicka Boom (3:38)"Guess what I can do with my long bony finger and my ruby red lips!" is a chant heard throughout this story from the great Irish storyteller, Liz Weir. And that sounds like that's got 'scary story' written all over it. But in keeping with the last couple of stories, it's really just a setup for a joke.  “Samurai Over My Head” by Donna Washington from Growing Up Army (10:41)We started the hour with a Donna Washington story and we'd like to bring you another one here. And although it contains a seance it's actually a sweet story featuring Donna Washington's parents.  "Feegbah" by Bill Gordh (7:21)We thought we'd wrap up today's episode with a little musical adventure from Bill Gordh and his banjo. Have you ever been to a county fair and seen a giant pumpkin? Well, you've likely never seen one as big as the one in this story. A pumpkin so large and ornery that it'll chase you down if you disturb its sleep.  

Who has made a difference in your life? Maybe it was your mom or dad, maybe it was a good friend, maybe even a stranger who gave you a compliment at the mall. Sometimes it's the people you least expect to help you make a change. Regardless of who it is, one thing is clear. Everyone is capable of making a difference. It's just a matter of what we choose to do with our abilities. How is it that even small things can have such a big effect on people's lives? We don't realize that little events often result in a long domino effect. So next time you ask if you really can make a difference, remember what you heard today about people old, young, big and small making a big difference through their little efforts. On today's episode, enjoy the following:“Come With Me and Be Free” by Kate Dudding from People Who Made a Difference (12:11)Our first story today comes from a person who specializes in true stories about people who made a difference. Her name is Kate Dudding and she has several albums, each of which has won a national storytelling award. This story certainly deserves an award, just like the main character: a young boy who grew up working in a carpet factory in order to pay off his family's debts. But working there, essentially a slave, didn't stop him from wanting better for himself and his peers. “Clever Counting” by Pam Faro from Why Didn't I Think of That?: Seeking Solutions- Some Sassy, Some Silly, Some Smart (11:19)Pam Faro says that storytelling is her calling and believes that storytelling can make a difference. This just might be true. We can learn a lot from stories if we pay attention. In this one, a beautiful leopard is ready to get married. The only question is to who? She has lots of options but she doesn't want just anyone. She wants someone that is both strong and clever. So she devises a plan that will help her find someone that fits that description. “Isaac and the Glum Drum Bridge” by Donna Washington from A Tureen of Tales (9:28)Dreams can be strange things. They can be so strange it makes you wonder what was wrong with the food you ate last night. They can also be so real that you think they actually happened. But what would you do if your dream told you to go somewhere or do something. Would you listen? Or would you just think it was just a crazy dream? Donna Washington has a story about just such a situation. Her love for stories grew when she was just a little girl listening to her father weave tales at the dinner table. Since, she has gone on to gather awards in vocal storytelling as well as for her children's books. “The Evergreens” by Odds Bodkin from The Evergreens (7:44)Odds Bodkin likes to, as he says, flavor his stories with music. He believes that ethical lessons are best learned when we are thoroughly entertained. This next story teaches all about the value of kindness and compassion as it follows a little bird who has broken its wing. At first, all of the trees are too busy and self important to notice such a small bird, but a kind evergreen tree is willing to look down and help it survive the winter. While it didn't take much work for the evergreen and its friends to help the bird, it made a big difference. “A Ride to Remember” by Glenda Bonin from Dust Vail Tales: Growing Up on The Empire Ranch in Arizona (5:55)The experiences we have while we are growing up have a great effect on who we become later in life. What we learn as kids sticks with us for a long time. Glenda Bonin tells a story about a girl named Dusty who grew up on a ranch. Her experiences there shaped her life in numerous ways. She was born in a time when girls weren't often allowed the same privileges as a boy but since she was the oldest child, she was able to help on the ranch. 

Do you ever find yourself in situations so outlandish, so ludicrous, so unbelievable that all you can do is laugh? It starts with the first time a bug flies up your nose…then it's the day you saw your 90-year-old grandma disco dancing in the kitchen…then suddenly it's the day you see pigs fly! Well, alright, maybe you haven't seen pigs fly yet, but you've surely experienced some wacky stuff. We want to celebrate some of that wacky stuff with you today, as we tell of beetles who become bug brides, escaping one-eyed giants, and the many ways to cook a fish.On today's episode of The Apple Seed, award-winning storytellers like Diane Edgecomb and Tim Lowry tell us some outlandish, ludicrous, unbelievable stories that will throw you for such a loop, all you'll think to do is laugh!  On today's episode, chuckle along to the following:"Princess Firefly" by Diane Edgecomb from Pattysaurus and Other Tales (13:55)Gifted storyteller, Diane Edgecomb, tells of a recently transformed beetle who mistakes herself for a firefly. Upon her coming-of-age, this bug is made to choose a suitor for marriage. Each passing suitor comes with a strange set of quirks, and none quite meet her requirements. That is, until the bug of her dreams comes along. Get a good laugh out of Diane's delightful voices in her telling of Princess Firefly, from her album Pattysaurus and Other Tales.  "Herring's Head" by Doug Elliot from Everybody's Fishin' (3:29)Clever storyteller Doug Elliot serenades us with a song about all the strange ways in which a fish head can be cooked into every-day meals. Cringe along to the thought of fishy flavors filling your home-made dishes as Doug Elliot performs Herring's Head, from his album Everybody's Fishin'. "Pinewood Derby" by Bil Lepp from Book Report: Live and (mostly) Unedited (10:33)Tall tale-teller, Bil Lepp regales a live audience at the International Storytelling Center with this story called "Pinewood Derby", about a Cub Scout entering his last pinewood derby. Since this is a Bil Lepp story you'll want to consider taking what he has to say with a grain of salt.   "Max and Margaret" by Steve Otto from Potpourri (8:28)Professional storyteller, Steve Otto, tells of a man called Max, who wants desperately to ride in an airplane. His wife, Margaret, however, wants desperately for him to join her at the state fair instead – an airplane ride is just too darn expensive, after all. Let Steve surprise you with the ending of his story Max and Margaret, from the album Potpourri.  "Sody Sallyratus" by Tim Lowry from SEVEN! World Folk Tales (7:49)This is an old Appalachian story that's been told by Apple Seed staples like Ed Stivender and Donna Washington. This version is from South Carolina storyteller, Tim Lowry. Tim tells stories from all over the world, but some of his favorites come from right around the place where he was raised. Like this tall tale called "Sody Sallyratus". Don't know what Sody Sallyratus is? Let Tim educate you.    

On today's Apple Seed Extra, enjoy a story from Donna Washington called "Tale of a Mouse." Clever play on words in that title, yes? The story is really about a mouse looking for someone to marry. You're sure to enjoy the tail...er...tale.

Here he shares a Christmas memory that's enjoyable year-round.  "The Great Blizzard of 1888" by Pippa White (10:28)Pippa White is known for telling beautiful, historical tales, often in rhyme. This next story - a favorite of ours - is about a teacher, and a classroom full of kids during "The Great Blizzard of 1888".  "Like Bread Loves Salt" by Ed Stivender (14:31) Here's a story from another Timp-favorite, Ed Stivender. It's about an aging king who dsires to pass his throne on to one of his three lovely daughters. Whoever provides the best answer to the question, 'Which one of you loves me the most?', will receive the best parcel of land.  "Sody Saluradus" by Donna Washington (10:24)Have you ever had a difficult time remembering a key piece of information? Perhaps the next time you struggle to remember something you should put it to a song. Although, in the case of this story, "Sody Saluradus", from Timp-newcomer, Donna Washington, a little jingle gets the characters into quite a bit of trouble.  "Museum of Your Life" by Donald Davis (2:29)Donald Davis wraps up a wonderul hour of storytelling with a plea to listeners to share stories with their loved ones.

However, you'll discover as the story goes on that there's plenty happening.  "Secret Santa" by Andy Offutt-Irwin from Perpetual Calendar (11:41)This next story is a Cub Scout story called "Secret Santa". But it's not so much a Christmas story as it is a delightful tale that will bring back Cub Scout memories for you, if you have them. Here's Andy Offutt Irwin performing live at the International Storytelling Cetner in Jonesborough, TN.  "The Cinderella Rap" by The Storycrafters from Tales From Timp 2012 (6:34)Here's a story from the husband and wife storytelling duo, Barry Marshall and Jeri Burns, AKA "The Storycrafters". Their musical, rhythmic tellings of some of the classic tales with which you're familiar put a new spin on some of those tales and you get to hear them as if for the first time. This is a piece called "The Cinderella Rap" performed live at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival.  "The Light Went Away" by Andy Offutt-Irwin from Andy's Wild Amphibian Show (3:16)Earlier you heard a Cub Scout memory from Andy Offutt Irwin. And now to close things off, Andy's back with a lullaby called "The Light Went Away".

In today's story, follow us to the villages of Italy, where a flustered groom sets out to find people more foolish than his new wife and in-laws, who spent the morning weeping over events that never happened.
