Our conversation today with Jon Elliott, District Executive for Shawnee & Shenrappawa Districts of the Shenandoah Area Council of Boy Scouts of America includes a discussion about the inclusion of girls in scouting, the history and terminology of their roles, and upcoming events. Jon explains that the organization was founded in 1910 and has since expanded to include girls. He emphasizes that although boys and girls have separate troops, they often share the same chartered organization, location, and time. Jon highlights that the Eagle rank, the highest achievement in the Scout program, requires the same tasks and merit badges regardless of gender. Those merit badges include various fields such as physical fitness, personal management, environmental science, first aid, and citizenship. He also explains the addition of a fourth level of citizenship focused on societal inclusion and acceptance of diversity. He talks about the creative and technological aspects of scouting, such as building projects and participating in video game tournaments. Jon gives a rundown of upcoming events like a birthday celebration for the scouts, the Pinewood Derby which includes a special community event where businesses can participate in making and racing cars. He also mentions an upcoming 'Celebrate Scouting' dinner in March aimed at fundraising. Learn more about scouting on their website: https://www.sac-bsa.org/ and follow them on Facebook. This Simply Trade podcast episode delves into the dynamic world of international trade with its accomplishments, disputes, and the looming unknowns. Main Topics: US-EU Steel Aluminum Deal: The hosts explore the unfolding US-EU steel aluminum deal, its pathways and potential impacts. They also delve into the implications of the EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) and its effects on the cost of US goods in European markets. EU's Green Tariffs: Andy reveals the contentious face of the EU's green tariffs, a measure attracting criticism because of its bureau-centric approach that deflates the notion of free trade. China's EV Subsidy Probe: Our hosts further discuss the launch of the EU's subsidy probe into Electric Vehicles (EV) by China, interpreting China's defense as a call for fair play in international trade. Lalo draws an interesting analogy with the Pinewood Derby car race, emphasizing the need for a level playing field. Global Growth Forecast for 2024: Finally, the hosts wrap up the episode by examining the UN's prediction of "stalling and divergent global growth" in 2024, weighing it against the currently thriving economy. In this week's [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, Derek smells like beaver. He's been busy trapping nuisance beavers on a property for the last few weeks using several 330 Conibear body traps. He talks about how he can't use snares or a drowning rod and with trapping beaver, you have to work with what you got. Have you seen the” Zombeavers” movie?? Do you know how to check the gender of a beaver … it's a bit of a sniff test. Why does Derek trap beaver if it's not just for their pelts? Tune in to learn ever more exciting facts about beavers. Brad is considering a questionable method of fleshing his whitetail deer hides. We bring up one of the biggest problems of having a big freezer full of wild game meat and debate over how long frozen meat is good for. We tease out some things to do with meat that's been in there for a while and Derek drops his favorite beaver meat recipes. Brad bumps into a bonehead who broke into our trailer at the office and he recently competed in a PineWood Derby race with his son. Jacob went fishing, of course, and went after trout and smallmouth bass. Bryaden got out to fish as well, and posed a question about the color of crawfish and water temperature. This is a good time to mention that we have a monster wave of new fishing gear coming to the GoWild store, from soft plastics to crankbaits to line, rods, reels and more, all just in time for spring fishing season, so gear up and get ready! We're also loading up on all the gear you need for spring turkey hunting, including boots, camo, vests, and more. If you like [UNCENSORED], please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify! Michigan's AutoTalk Episode 68: "Ford's Raptor R, Pinewood Derby Cars, and a Big Daddy Don Garlits Tale"In this episode, executive producer Phil Tower and co-hosts Al Schwinkendorf and Joh Puhek bring you three important auto-related news and history storiesFirst off, we have news from Ford Trucks...the announcement that the 2023 model year brings the all-new F-150® Raptor R™, Ford's most potent F-150 Raptor ever, with a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 that cranks out 700 horsepower and 640 lb.-ft. of torque...a truck Ford says is built for extreme off-roading adventuresNext up, we reminisce about the legendary Boy Scouts originated Pinewood derby races that will be 70 years old in 2023. Interestingly enough, the first pinewood derby was held on May 15, 1953, in Manhattan Beach, California by Cub Scout Pack 280C. The pinewood derby concept was created by the Pack's Cubmaster, Don Murphy. Since Mr. Murphy's son was too young to participate in the popular Soap Box Derby races, he came up with the idea of racing miniature wood cars. The rest as we know is full of pinewood derby race stories told for decades! Finally, Al has news of a historically significant event in the life of now 90-year-old drag Racing legend, Big Daddy Don Garlits. Garlits is known across the world as the Godfather of drag racing. Garlits perfected the rear-engine Top Fuel dragster, an innovation motivated by the loss of part of his foot in a dragster accident...a much safer design since it put most of the fuel processing and rotating parts of the dragster behind the driver. Garlits was also the first drag racer to officially surpass the 170, 180, 200, 240, 250, and 270 mile-per-hour marks in the quarter mile; he was also the first to top 200 mph in the 1⁄8 mi. To put it simply, he was a man built for speed.Online:https://garlits.com/Ford Raptor R:https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2022/07/18/700-horsepower-new-ford-f-150-raptor-r.htmlOfficial Boy Scouts Pinewood Derby car Kit:https://www.scoutshop.org/official-pinewood-derby-car-kit-17006.htmlLike us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/MichigansAutoTalkPodcastMichigan's AutoTalk podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Google Podcasts, Amazon Audio, Spreaker.com, Deezer, and Podcatcher.Oh, and if you'd like our podcast, please leave a review!
