Focused Backstory: The Key to Writing Deep Character Journeys -- Write Stuff

Learn how to write characters readers will love. Has an industry professional told you not to dump character history at the beginning of your story? If so, you aren't alone. But what's the solution to this common advice? Most writers take the time to design interesting characters with troubled pasts. They long for readers to care about the characters' lives. However, the sad truth is on page one, readers don't care—yet. That's why industry gurus tell writers to stop overusing character history, also called backstory, at the beginning of stories. Have you ever wondered... How to use backstory correctly? What are the ways other writers successfully incorporate backstory into their work? Do tools exist to help writers better plan stories so the backstory isn't such a problem? In Focused Backstory: The Key to Writing Deep Character Journeys, you'll find answers to these questions and more. You'll learn how to avoid the dreaded info-dump and instead harness curiosity so readers keep turning pages. This resource breaks down focused backstory into simple pieces to use flexibly in any story no matter what genre or length. Join me as I chat with Carol Alwood about effectively using backstory to create deep character journeys on Tuesday, June 29th at 7 pm Eastern. You can call in at 646-668-8485 and press 1 to be live on air. Sex, sexuality, and sin -- the Three S's.  When it comes to mainstream Christian fiction, there's a deliberate avoidance of said topics as a lot of mainstream publishers wish to focus on Christian living, devotion, or a plethora of other safe topics.  When it comes to these topics among some Christian -- Shh! Don't about them. You don't want to lead people astray! Well, it's a given that people both in and out of the church are already astray. This doesn't mean that we are suppose to let people not know what the word of God says about these things. And they're very specific. God deals in absolutes and this is offensive to many people.  How best do we approach these sensitive topics? God and politics -- do I need to say more?  In recent years, God and politics have become such volatile topics that even to mention one's political party is to, in the eyes and ears of 'the other' is to sum up that person's identity. Phrases like, "You can't be a Christian and a X" are thrown about with wild abandon -- as if God sits on the throne with an elephant or a donkey on either side of Him.  How can we agree to disagree when the cancel culture, beating at the door, is quick to shut down anyone who does not agree with the majority? When do we as Christians reach out in love and say, "I may disagree with your stance, but you are still my brother and sister in Christ?" Or is it too late? Out of the end of the world as we know it, comes the beginning of the world we dreamed of and prayed for. In a small Iowa town, survivors of unprecedented global war and natural disasters set out to rebuild their lives. So much of what has happened in recent weeks defies explanation for the remnant of the resistance to the last Dictator, survivors of the last human war. Out of tribulation and loss, they stumble into a fresh breeze of hope that seems too good to be true. Yet, peace has fallen all around the world, and the new ruler in Jerusalem enforces that peace through an odd assortment of people spread over the Earth. Even the weather and wildlife have been transformed for the comfort of the remaining people. Could this be what the Christians looked forward to for millennia, the Kingdom of God come to Earth, the Reign of Jesus Christ? Even in the face of gracious prosperity, for the world and its inhabitants, the seeds have been planted for one last human revolt against God. Peace. It is so sweet, so rich, so meaningful. We are not just talking about an absence of conflict, but a quality of life that stretches the limits of our comprehension. Such a depth of peace and rest is elusive in our world, but it is normal for the God who created us. For those who are at peace with God, simply experiencing His presence is enough to calm our anxious souls. Because peace and rest begin with God, it is no surprise that this world is so full of unrest. The mindsets, systems, and expectations that so naturally define our human existence, at nearly every turn, hinder the richness of peace that flows from the kingdom of heaven. The Search for Rest is a fifty-day devotional designed to help us adjust to God's ways. Each daily reading includes an inspirational quote, Bible passages to read, an instructive lesson, questions for group use, and a practical "Peace Step" to help you apply the principles involved. Reading this book comes with no guarantee for total life transformation. But if you take its contents to heart, and if you make a genuine effort to follow through on what you learn, you will come away changed. Simply take things one day at a time, with one step after another, and the peace, freedom, and joy that you have always longed for will become more and more and more your reality. This is the second book in a series focusing on failure, which is designed to accompany my initial book on failure; Failure Is Not The Problem, It’s The Beginning Of Your Success. I specifically wrote this workbook to help ease the pain of reading about failure. This workbook is intended as a read along with my initial book. The topic of failure is not a subject people tend to embrace without some coaching. Therefore, use the workbook as a personal guide to challenge you as you embark on what may be unfamiliar territory. Six thousand years ago a war began. A war to rule Heaven and Earth that dates all the way back to the Garden of Eden. In the Garden, God told Satan that one day a woman would give birth to a male child – the Messiah, who would redeem humanity and destroy him. In order to prevent this child’s birth, Satan instigated a fallen angelic rebellion.  Using a literal reading of Scripture, we are given a complete picture of the war between two bloodlines – the lineage of the Messiah and the seed of Satan. Exploring passages rarely connected to the giants, you will discover new revelations regarding the Nephilim including: The Biblical location of the heavenly portal used by angels to enter the earthly realm. How were angels able to reproduce with human women? Who was the first human woman to marry the fallen Sons of God and conceive a child? Who was the fallen angel who ruled the preflood world? Wait! There's many more! Citing dozens of ancient Christian and Jewish writings from the first century AD through the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the author provides a thorough side-by-side comparison of the Bible and the extra-Biblical texts on this topic. This book is a must-read! This is the story of God’s enduring love for all people and His promise to bring redemption through the prophesied Savior. This is the Judgment of the Nephilim. I've talked about the Nephilim before using the vehicle of fiction but today, we're taking a non-ficiton approach with my guest cohost Ryan Pitterson on Tuesday, April 20th at 7 pm Eastern time. You can call in at 646-668-8485 and press 1 to be live on air. What Does it Mean to Have Child-like Faith? -- The Parker J Cole Show

I had a young girl on my show in recent weeks who invigorated my spirit. She was twelve years old and had already starred in a music video, spoken in front of the masses, wrote a book, and was just getting started. As she talked to me on her show, her family and friends called in, supporting her, encouraging her, and uplifting her. Interviewing her as I did, I felt the power of her child-like faith like physical touch. I thought I knew what it meant to have child-like faith until I met her. Or, maybe I had forgotten. Through her faith, my own increased. It calls to mind the verse in Luke 18:10 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein. I had another young man on my show a few years ago. He said, "You're never too young to begin your dream." At the time, he was about fifteen or sixteen years old. His dream was to be a TV broadcaster. He'd written a book, appeared on TV, and was just getting started. He's about twenty or twenty-one years old now. He has a TV show, he's reported on local news, interviewed political candidates and more. I noticed with him that his parents also guided his path, supporting him. Over the years, I've rooted for his success and am so pleased to see where the Lord will lead him. Both young people had child-like faith. An atheist asked me once what would make me leave the Christian faith. The way that's worded indicates a set of values' suggesting Christianity is one of many sets of an adherence to a code of life. Religion is a man-made way of getting to God.  The whole of them rest on a set of values and rules. Many people have erred in making Christianity a set of do's and don'ts.  So, really, the question the atheist asked is what would make me abandon God? A believer's' faith rests on the person of the resurrected Christ. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, as the apostle Paul said, we would be the most miserable of people. For we would still be seperated from God, still bound by sin, still condenmed. If Jesus Christ did not rise from the dead, if He were still in the tomb, then we have no hope or any chance of rescue.  Thanks be God that Christ is risen and lives forevermore. Through a living God, we are forgiven. We are encompassed by a love that will never grow dull. That will remain vibrant forever. It's the reason why the apostle Paul says in Romans 12:1 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Notice the word 'living'. We don't have to die--Christ did already. Not only did He die for our sins but He rose again. Because He lives, we have power over a sinful nature. We can fight against an enemy who seeks to destroy us. But wait! There's more! Where do we come from? Does it matter if we are random chance or if we are created? Does it have to be God that created everything or should we search the cosmos for our alien-god creators?  Origin discussions speak directly to a hidden space in us longing for exploration. If we are the result of random chance, ultimately, we don't owe loyalty or obedience to anyone or anything but ourselves. If we were created, we have to acknowledged we were created for...something. When these ideas are explored in speculative fiction the origins of humanity lie in the realms of random chance via evolutionary processes, or, alien-god creators who were experimenting and tripped over their feet, and boom! humanity.  Within the body of Christ, there's a deep need to ensure our faith in our God as our just, holy, and righteous Creator matches with our undestanding of the world around us. Is it logical to believe that God created everything? Listen in the discussion as I chat with Dr. Rob Carter from Creation Ministries International on Saturday, March 27th at 2 pm Eastern time. Dr Carter was converted to Christ at an early age, but did not know what to do with the theory of evolution. In his freshman year of college, he was exposed to the information for creation for the first time and soon after adopted it as his modus operandi. When it comes to how our culture should address the issue of Race in America, the voice of God is deafeningly silent. Public dialogue continues without much or decisive input from the contemporary Christian community. In fact, the Body of Jesus Christ in America as a whole, is pretty much divided along racial lines. This is clearly reflected in the split within the contemporary church along political party lines and social policies. To be sure, there is preaching about how we ought to, or how we want to treat one another as children of God. Identity theft cases have risen steadily each year. For 2018, according to the FTC, there were 444,344 reported cases. In 2019, that number rose to 650,523. In 2020, that number soared to 1,387,615. Victims of identity theft discuss how violated they feel. Also, they talk about how identity theft may have affected their livelihood or affected their character as some have had to deal with criminal charges, arrest, and court proceedings for something they did not commit. The victims of identity theft are often left holding the bag because the companies that fraudulent activity has been perpetrated against find it easier to go after the victim and not the guilty party. Sometimes, thousands of dollars and years of activity are spent in trying to clear one's name from the bad stain identity theft. The worst part is that perpetrator of identity theft does not care about what they are doing to others. In fact, victims are not people to them, but pieces of data used to bring about their own ends -- whether to get money, material items, etc. They don't care and will not care, and nothing will change that fact. They often get away scot-free because it's hard to trace the activity to them. If all that can happen in our everyday lives, how much more does spiritual identity theft affect our souls? What does it mean? How can we protect ourselves from it? Join me as I chat with blogger Tracey Moore on Saturday, February 27th at 2 pm Eastern time. The movie Platoon has one of the best cinematic scenes of all time. Playing out to the haunting tunes of Adagio for Strings. While being extracted by a helicopter, the platoon members see one of their own has been left behind. He has been betrayed, wounded by his own, and is being pursued by the enemy. Some watch helplessly as he's killed, falling to the ground, riddled by bullets. The camera cuts to him, his arms lifted into the air as he falls to his knees. Almost as if in his last moments, he's still pleading for rescue before he falls down dead. As I think about today's show, I can't help but make this point: spiritual warfare is real. Who can remember that song that says, "We are soldiers. In the army. We have to fight, although we have to die. We have to hold up the blood-stained banner. We have to hold it up until we die." The battle for our souls has been going on for millennia. Believers past and present have all been a part of it. We are attacked from all sides, knocked down, and even brought down. Sometimes the weapons are blatantly obvious. Other times, they are subtle. The war rages on. Have we forgotten that? The Enemy hasn't forgotten, but perhaps I did. Perhaps you did. Today's show is a rousing call for remembering that the war rages on. How can we stop ourselves from being distracted from this truth? What do we do when we are in the Enemy's sights, his weapon aimed at us? What if we've sat on the sidelines, letting others take our place? "Why?" This is a question kids ask all the time.  For those of us who have children, it may be easy to tell them, 'Because I said so." or "Not now." or give some pat answers. 'Why' questions that children are opportunities for communication, for teaching, and for connecting. This was something my guest today wanted to do. In her own words: I wanted to create a tool that would help me encourage my kids to ask their questions because I want them to know that they matter to me, and their questions matter too. That's why I created the My Why Journal. My Why Journal is not only the key to opening the door of communication and building strong relationships with our children, but a beautiful keepsake to treasure for a lifetime. In the business of life, we often find ourselves giving our children short answers to the many questions that they ask us. Sometimes, if the questions are too difficult or the timing isn’t right, we shut them down completely. But that doesn’t make the question go away. These questions they ask and the  answers they receive to even the smallest inquiries are building blocks to the foundation of learning and moreso, to having great relationships with our children, even as they get older. Parents, the days are long, the questions are tedious, but the years are short and our answers matter! “Forest born! Ogre child! You’re nothing but a demon wild!” Vasilisa has always been strong. She’s strong enough to break the arm of the bully that daily taunts her. She won’t because she and her mother are servants at the Orlov manor, and her mother would be punished for her retaliation. Instead Vasilisa bides her time until she is sixteen and can return to the forest. Only Staver, the master’s son, shows her kindness. His friendship pulls as strong as the forest, but their classes are divided forever by law. She is a forest born, fatherless servant and her future at the manor holds mockery filled drudgery. War threatens. The forest calls. Will she stay to protect the one who can never be more than a friend, or flee to the peace that the forest offers? Are you the type to make New Year Resolutions? "This year, I'm going to do more this or that." "This year, I'm going to lose this or that." "This year, I will do this or that."  No matter what it is you plan to do this year, most New Year's resolutions fizzle before the end of the month of the New Year. Lets face it: most of us have stopped making New Year's resolutios because it's impossible for us to keep focused on the goal.  This isn't to say that goal setting is wrong -- far from it! We are meant to succeed in all areas of life -- but we can't do it on our own.  So on this episode of the Parker J Cole show, we're telling to do something -- get rid of your New Year's resolution, and seek God more.  Seeking God instead of a resolution puts us in His plans, not ours. It keep us focused on His will, not our hopes. And there's more when we seek God. Take a step back in time to Door County in the 1800s, a time when lighthouse keepers couldn't give up, or lives would be lost. A time when storms on the lakes were as dangerous as the storms in their souls. A time when the people of the islands had to be strong and courageous. A time for Lainey of the Door Islands to become the woman God wants her to be. For Lainey, life on tiny Pilot Island is more trouble than it's worth. Auntie Edith is always fussing at her and making her do chores, and Uncle Otis spends a lot of time manning the lighthouse. Each day, Lainey stares out at the Great Lakes, praying this will be the day that brings her parents home to her from their travels. Will she ever come to love the islands and their treacherous waters, which seem to only bring a lot of shipwrecks and heartache to the people who live on the islands? Will she ever be able to go home? Join Judy DuCharme as we chat about her book on Wednesday, January 13th at 7 pm Eastern time. You can call in at 646-668-8485 and press 1 to be live on air. Should writers invest creative effort in writing a series? It's a question that has a nuanced answer to it. It's not simply 'yes' or 'no' and then hurry up and write twelve books. It requires a thoughtful plan, process, and other considerations. When I first started writing, I preferred to write standalone books. More and more, I find that series writing lends is own rewards and opportunities to succeed. What are the best ways to approach a series? How do you begin one? Do you work by yourself or with other authors? What about marketing? Is a series the same as a serial? Join me as I chat with my returning guest co-host and contributor, Lynn Donovan as we talk about the ins and outs of series writing on Tuesday, January 12th at 7 pm Eastern time. Captain David Alexander commands an Explorer Class Starship known as the SS Evangeline. Their Commonwealth assigned mission is to locate and identify a new enemy encroaching on Commonwealth territory before it’s too late. Their new enemy has unidentifiable technology that turns people against their own government. No methods of persuasion have proven effective in restoring the enemy conscripts. The Supreme Executor of the Commonwealth, Luciano Hale, has authorized extreme sanctions. He wants the Liontari forces stopped, at all costs. The Captain and crew are new to the mission, new to their jobs and new to each other. Most have been married for only a few months. Tensions are high as the crew spends the first three weeks aboard ship traveling to a distant corner of the galaxy to begin their mission. David knows first contact missions are risky and the discovery of such a powerful enemy increases the danger exponentially, at least that’s what he’s been told. The real experience proves to be quite unsettling. The crew faces primitive natives with superstitious beliefs, crude dangerous lifestyles, assaults, tests of skill and honor, violent weather and their own mortality. Can they survive such overwhelming odds? You can call in at 646-668-8485 and press 1 to be live on air. Download Stitcher on your mobile device. Follow us on Apple Podcast.
