Season 4, Episode 17This coming November, Ohioans are going to see a proposed amendment on their ballot. You can find a link to the text of that amendment in our shownotes. There's been a lot of emotion in Ohio right now about reproductive rights / abortion - and also a lot of confusion. This past summer, we held a special election here that was aimed at changing our Ohio Constitution to make it HARDER to pass ANY kind of constitutional amendment. That had a surprisingly large turnout, and failed... and while it didn't specifically engage the question of abortion access, it was certainly levied by political conservatives as a protection against what's coming on this coming November's ballot from progressive side of this conversation. The idea was to make it more difficult to pass any amendment to Ohio's constitution and since it didn't pass... the standard rules remain: to pass an amendment to Ohio's constitution, it takes a simple majority vote, or 51%. In other words, this coming vote needs over 50% to embed the measure into our constitution. What we want to do in today's special episode is to clearly explain what the proposed amendment says, means, and doesn't say. We want to also lay out what is real currently regarding Ohio law, abortion access, and the realities about care for women and children. We're doing this because we believe strongly in demonstrating a consistent ethic of life... which comes from our fundamental belief as Christians that all are made in the Image of God, and all life is to be treated with honor and dignity... especially the lives of those most vulnerable, as scripture says over and over again. Christians can and do disagree about policy... about what particular ways are the best ways to legislate in support of a consistent ethic of life. So we want to help equip you to prayerfully discern this policy issue at hand... and to consider wisely and Christianly how to engage in this ballot issue. You can find more about our consistent ethic of life through a link that's also in our show notes.Shownotes:AmendmentOther In-Between Conversations:S3E16: Human Dignity And Our Value Life EthicS2E18: Rebuilding A Culture That Values LifeTwitter: @stephkrider AND @RichNathanFacebook
Plunged immediately after their baptism into a fiery spiritual storm, Loren and Eve Montcrest face the vicious assaults of the Arcane Institute and their Harmony society as its leaders pull out all stops in the battle to win back or destroy their old disciples. At the same time, the couple must struggle with their sinful natures, their fallen world, and continual demonic deceptions and assaults. This second novel in the Omega Point Series propels Loren and Eve through twisted intrigues and sinful entanglements toward the Heavenly promise. God has placed them under the wise care of the head of the secret underground church, Alexander Renkin. Yet Alexander is in a precarious position himself as the nominal head of the local KINDness Church, an arm of Harmony. Alexander wonders how much will they be willing to sacrifice and to suffer for their new faith when the deeper trials come. When a mighty move of the Holy Spirit disrupts their pagan household, Loren and the now-pregnant Eve must abandon everything and flee to a secret sanctuary—a sanctuary they quickly learn is not safe at all. Yet, in spite of everything, God's love and promises unfold. Join me as I chat with two of my favorite people in the world, Linda and Rich Nathan as we revisit the Omega Point series and it's accompanying study guide on Tuesday, July 18th at 7 pm Eastern time. In this episode of We Are Vineyard, we hear a sermon that Rich Nathan preached at Columbus Vineyard the same week that we recorded his podcast episode back in September. It is an introduction to a series called “Good Question”, which explores some common questions people have about faith and Christianity. In this sermon, Rich offers some clues found in scripture, science, nature, and our moral senses that show us it is more likely than not that God exists. Rich Nathan is the founding pastor of Vineyard Columbus. Rich was the first Senior Pastor serving from 1987-2020. Prior to becoming senior pastor, Rich taught business law at The Ohio State University for five years. He is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and received his Juris Doctorate with honors from The Ohio State University College of Law in 1980. Rich served on the National Board for Vineyard USA for more than two decades. Rich now serves on the Board of Christian relief agency, Convoy of Hope. He is a popular national and international conference speaker. Rich co-authored Both And (IVP Books, 2013) with Insoo Kim as well as Empowered Evangelicals (Ampelon Revised 2009) with Ken Wilson. Rich is also the author of Who is My Enemy? Welcoming People the Church Rejects (Zondervan, 2002). He has written numerous articles on leadership in publications such as Leadership Magazine. Rich was born and raised in New York City. He and his wife, Marlene, have been married for over 40 years. They have two children and six grandchildren. In this episode of We Are Vineyard, Jay talks with Rich Nathan about growing up in a completely secular environment, and how chasing his wife in college led him to an encounter with the Holy Spirit that radically changed the course of his life. They also talk through some practical advice for offering a salvation call during a church service, the benefits of making it a specific opportunity separate from the ministry call, and the danger of making assumptions about the spiritual status of people in your congregation. On June 11th, I chatted with Linda and Rich Nathan about psychedelics entering Christian circles: Psychedelics are growing in Christian circles. But are they giving believers a closer relationship with God, or tearing them further apart? Many Christians seek a deeper intimacy, but they want an experience, and not a relationship. Drugs such as marijuana, LSD, and other substances can alter the state of consciousness, giving one an experience. However, in the midst of that, we open the doorway to demonic influence. We had a lot of comments and questions to this show so I have invited Linda and Rich Nathan back to answer and respond to them. Listen in at 646-668-8485. In this episode of We Are Vineyard, Jay and Julia Pickerill reminisce about their younger years together in youth and young adult ministry. They talk about the importance of embodied connection over simply teaching information and how Julia was changed by being exposed to a theology of the local church. Julia also passes on a crucial word about longevity in pastoring. In January of 2021, Julia Pickerill became one of the Senior Pastors of the Columbus Vineyard alongside her husband Eric, succeeding Rich Nathan, who founded the church in 1987. Julia and Eric have been a part of the Vineyard movement for twenty-five years, during which time they've held multiple roles in the Columbus Vineyard and served as church planters and Lead Pastors of Vineyard Amsterdam (Netherlands). They returned to the US in 2015 and transitioned into senior leadership of Vineyard Columbus in January 2021. Julia is a nine on the enneagram, is a really bad cook, dislikes writing speaker bios, has three fabulous kids, and relaxes by reading novels about existential threats. An atheist asked me once what would make me leave the Christian faith. The way that's worded indicates a set of values' suggesting Christianity is one of many sets of an adherence to a code of life. Religion is a man-made way of getting to God. The whole of them rest on a set of values and rules. Many people have erred in making Christianity a set of do's and don'ts. So, really, the question the atheist asked is what would make me abandon God? A believer's' faith rests on the person of the resurrected Christ. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, as the apostle Paul said, we would be the most miserable of people. For we would still be seperated from God, still bound by sin, still condenmed. If Jesus Christ did not rise from the dead, if He were still in the tomb, then we have no hope or any chance of rescue. Thanks be God that Christ is risen and lives forevermore. Through a living God, we are forgiven. We are encompassed by a love that will never grow dull. That will remain vibrant forever. It's the reason why the apostle Paul says in Romans 12:1 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Notice the word 'living'. We don't have to die--Christ did already. Not only did He die for our sins but He rose again. Because He lives, we have power over a sinful nature. We can fight against an enemy who seeks to destroy us. But wait! There's more! Join me as I chat with Linda and Rich Nathan on Saturday, April 3rd at 2 pm Eastern time. This week Matt looked at Envy and we were challenged how even some of the simplest things can cause envy to thrive in our lives.
