In this episode, Khrysti, Matt, Chris and Dave discuss 1990's "Joe Versus the Volcano."
Dr. Jim Jacobi has spent the past 50 years in Hawaiʻi as a biologist specializing in mapping Hawai'i's unique ecosystems and studying the plants and animals contained within them. Like so many of his cohort, he is a skilled naturalist, having worked on introduced rats, native insects first for the Bishop Museum and then mapping vegetation and management research projects for the Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center of the US Geological Survey in Volcano. We talk to Jim about the evolution of tracking changes in vegetation by hand from aerial photos to the use of computer mapping and modelling. He shares with us the unique experiences heʻs had across the rugged U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service transects that traverse mountainous summits to sea, as well as the profound sorrow in witnessing the last Hawaiian honeycreeper in the wild, the Kauaʻi oʻo.
Send a textTHREADSA new 4x4 starts with a bang (and a lot of whimpers) as the gang begins their Season 17 coverage of hacks (i.e., directors for hire) with THREADS (1984), director Mick Jackson's pseudo-documentary but fully anti-nuke made-for-TV movie. Cohost Thomas's pick of directors to launch the season of hacks, Jackson got his start in film with the BBC in the late-60s as an editor. He saw an opportunity in the early 80s to express his anti-nuclear sentiments through a wry documentary in the guise of a consumer report for the BBC's science series Q.E.D. (1982 - 1999) on the efficacy—or inefficacy—of fallout shelters and other measures disseminated by the British government for civilian response to a nuclear attack. Jackson sought a use for excess material on the horrors of a nuclear attack, including a chance to popularize a then little-known theory of nuclear winter. When the U.S. television film The Day After (1983) screwed the pooch with its competency of officials and heroic hopefulness (in Jackson's estimation), he recommitted to his dark vision and the meaning behind the slogan that “No one wins a nuclear war” with Threads. Made during the highest Cold War tensions since the Cuba Missile Crisis, Jackson's film shows the thin weave of society unraveling after the British city of Sheffield is nuked as a result of the U.S. and U.S.S.R. in a battle over Iran, developments simmering in the background over radio and preparative actions by the local government during its first 45 minutes. While a range of characters will be killed immediately or die slowly, the central focus of the story is Ruth, a young woman who becomes pregnant by her boyfriend, later fiancé, whom she'll become estranged from after the blast. Ruth, unlike most, will survive afterwards for over a decade, migrating, scavenging, subsistence farming, selling her body, and trading with the sorry survivors. Her teenage daughter Jane born into the new, post-apocalyptic world survives Ruth only to herself become pregnant and the horror of what leaves her vaginal cavity is what ends this dark tale. This episode, the Ghost of Maggie Thatcher threatens return; Thomas seethes; Jack puts a cohost on blast (pun intended) for passing notes during recording; Ken talks sidewalk cuisine; and Ryan requests more dance numbers. Next week, through the temporal pincer movement™️ Threads matches with 1997's Volcano, a pairing Ken, feeling his oats, entitles “Ash-to-Ash.” THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Daylight (1996) is a high-intensity disaster thriller starring Sylvester Stallone as former EMS Chief Kit Latura, a man forced back into action when a catastrophic explosion seals off the Holland Tunnel between New York and New Jersey. Directed by Rob Cohen, this 90s action survival film blends explosive practical effects, claustrophobic tension, and classic Stallone heroics. When a chain-reaction accident involving toxic waste trucks ignites a massive fireball inside the tunnel, dozens of survivors become trapped underground with limited oxygen and rising water levels. Stallone's character must guide a group of strangers through collapsing walls, smoke-filled corridors, and psychological panic in a desperate race against time. The film co-stars Amy Brenneman, Viggo Mortensen, Dan Hedaya, and Stan Shaw, delivering strong ensemble performances that add emotional weight to the disaster spectacle.Daylight showcases large-scale practical tunnel sets, real water effects, and intense stunt work — a hallmark of big-budget 1990s action films. Produced during the peak era of Hollywood disaster movies like Twister and Volcano, the movie emphasizes human survival, teamwork, and redemption under pressure. With themes of sacrifice, leadership, and second chances, Daylight remains a gripping entry in Sylvester Stallone's 90s action filmography and a nostalgic favorite for fans of practical-effects disaster cinema. If you are new to the podcast then please consider following us on the platform that you love, we can be found most anywhere that you listen to your favorite podcasts. This Quackcast was recorded on the 14th of February so our cast was about Valentines day and romantic love stuff! A day named after a martyred Christian from the latter days of Rome who was beaten and then beheaded. Apparently he advocated for the right of Roman Legionaries to marry so that's where the love and romance association comes from… Which is interestingly ironic to me because the true meaning of "romance" and "romantic" isn't lovey dovey stuff, but rather it refers to things that are associated with ancient Rome, or are evocative of the idealised memory of it, hence people who're obsessed with ideals used to be called "romantics". The concept of "romance" has since been simplified and bastardised to only mean lovehearts and Hallmark type commercial ideas of people courting - chocolates, flowers and all the rest. We chat about that and actual lovely dovey comics and movies and books and things. Out of the three of us much of Banes' work has more of a focus on love than anything else. He even has a comic called "Kaiju Valentine", which has a fantastic love story at its centre between a giant woman and a normal sized man, you should really read it! But his other comics like Typical Strange and Bottomless Waitress that he works with me also feature significant love plots. Some of my fave love stories are the movie Joe Vs the Volcano, and the books Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, and The Rowan, all of them because although love is the focus they use it to explore other things: Destiny and self realisation of Joe Vs the Volcano, dangerous, nasty toxic passion in Wuthering Heights, class politics in Pride and Prejudice, and becoming a whole, accepted person in The Rowan. Do you enjoy love stories or do one yourself? This week our best-off from Gunwallace is Kaiju Valentine - Stomp meets a big stomping monster woman as she bops and bounces heavily to this cool, percussive and yet somewhat ethereal sound. Episode Description: What happens when the biggest football game of the year lands on the most romantic night?
On America at Night with McGraw Milhaven, Tracy Walder analyzed the Nancy Guthrie kidnapping case, explaining how federal agencies coordinate in abduction investigations and what warning signs the public often misses in high-risk cases. Ari Redbord, Global Head of Policy at TRM Labs, then broke down how bitcoin and blockchain intelligence are used in kidnapping and ransom investigations — clarifying common myths about crypto being “untraceable” and detailing how law enforcement tracks digital money trails. Finally, Elizabeth Fein, President & CEO of Friends of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, provided an update on the current eruption, the impact on the park and local communities, and highlighted youth engagement efforts like the Guardians of the Trails program and the new vlog series, “Venting on a Volcano.” Learn more about your ad choices. It was a radical rescue. “...the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” - Revelation 13:8 (KJV)
During The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Tour, Peter Gabriel informed his Genesis bandmates that he would be leaving once his touring duties were fulfilled. While this was disappointing to the band, some members of the press heralded it as the end of Genesis. However, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett could all contribute to the songwriting as could their wily drummer, Phil Collins. So the band forged ahead and began and exhaustive search for lead singers. To make a long story short, they figured out that Phil had the kind of voice they were looking for and decided it best if he came out from behind the drum kit to be the lead singer. While sometimes replacing the lead singer can cause a revolt of hardcare fans, it actually opened up the band for greater success in the US as they found his funny, entertaining style more fun than the serious, artsy Gabriel. Their first post-Gabriel effort was A Trick of the Tail, a gathering of 8 eclectic songs that hold them to their progressive roots but also branch out into more radio friendly material. The opener Dance on a Volcano let's Hackett and Banks bounce off each other in bombastic proggy fashion while the follow up Entangled is a more lilting back and forth. And it adds a bit of humor as does Robbery, Assault and Battery which lets Collins adjust his accent for different characters. Ripples is a lovely song that would portend more like it in the coming years and Los Endos is a great way to end the album (and a concert). Of course we talk about all the politics, go track x track and discuss how this album started them on a more pop path, one that would end up with them on top of the rock /pop world 10 years later. A debate on what Madrid need in midfield to truly compete. (2:21:43)
Music and science don’t often overlap, but University of Oregon professor Leif Karlstrom is making it happen with the Volcano Listening Project. Karlstrom turns datasets from the volcanoes he studies every day into sound, then uses those soundtracks to make music with a wide array of musicians. The project will be on display at a pair of upcoming shows in Portland and Hood River on Jan. 28 and 29. Karlstrom joins us to share music from the Volcano Listening Project and what it takes to turn data into song.

Here is this week's Climate Watch 01.21.26Story 1 — U.S. lawmakers push to restore energy reliabilityCongressional leaders are advancing legislation aimed at speeding approvals for oil, gas, and pipeline projects. Supporters say the effort restores sound energy policy after years of regulatory delays that raised prices and weakened grid reliability.Story 2 — EU industry warns climate rules are driving manufacturing outEuropean manufacturers are warning lawmakers that strict climate regulations are forcing energy-intensive industries to relocate overseas. Business groups say high power costs and compliance burdens are undermining competitiveness and threatening jobs.Story 3 — UK reconsiders energy transition after affordability backlashBritish officials are facing mounting pressure to revisit green energy mandates as households and businesses struggle with rising electricity bills. Critics argue reliable fossil fuel generation remains essential to stabilize prices and prevent shortages.Story 4 — Strong earthquake jolts Pacific seismic zoneA powerful earthquake struck along a major Pacific fault line this week. Scientists say the event is consistent with natural tectonic plate movement and highlights the Earth's ongoing seismic activity unrelated to climate policy or atmospheric conditions.Story 5 — Volcano activity increases along active plate boundaryGeologists are monitoring increased volcanic activity in a long-active volcanic region, citing magma movement deep below the surface. Experts emphasize this is normal behavior in tectonically active zones shaped by natural Earth processes.Story 6 — Global data confirms fossil fuels remain dominantLatest global energy figures show oil, natural gas, and coal continue to supply the majority of the world's power. Analysts say the data reinforces the need for realistic energy policies that prioritize reliability, affordability, and economic growth.CLIMATE WATCH — WEEKLY EDITION
Mike Tomlin's shocking decision to step down after 19 seasons in Pittsburgh headlines this episode, leaving the Rooneys stunned and the league wondering what's next—another sideline stop or a blockbuster move to the broadcast booth? We recap a thrilling Wild Card weekend that once again proved why the NFL reigns supreme, make our Divisional Weekend picks, and shift to college football as Indiana faces Miami in the Natty—breaking down what the Canes need to do to pull off the upset and what a Miami win could mean for the future of the CFP. We close Into the Volcano with Chels reflecting on the Jacksonville FP debate around Lynn Jones and the reminder that growth can still happen, even when outcomes don't go as planned.
In AD 79, Pompeii and Herculaneum were subsumed by the eruption of Vesuvius, buried and preserved under metres of volcanic ash. Today, they are among the most famous ruins of the ancient world – and in this four-part Sunday Series, we'll be exploring their secrets. In this first episode, historian Dr Jess Venner guides Kev Lochun through daily life in Pompeii and Herculaneum. They explore the myths surrounding the ‘mountain', why pomegranates mean we can't precisely date the disaster and how – implausible as it may seem today – the residents of these Roman cities had no idea they were living in the shadow of death. ––––– GO BEYOND THE PODCAST Want to know more about the story of Pompeii?
