Today I'm chatting with autism mom Laura, who is a listener turned guest! Laura and shares her journey with son, Owen. When Laura initially reached out to me, one of the things she really wanted to talk about was the importance of support. Laura works for a local nonprofit that provides many awesome resources for special needs families, one of which is a monthly support group. Laura explains how after Owen was diagnosed with ASD, she decided to attend the support group herself. Laura describes herself as introverted so while it was a bit out of her comfort zone, she wanted to give it a try. The group quickly proved to beneficial for her and today she's close friends with several members! I often talk about the importance of support on this podcast, and I truly believe it makes ALL the difference on this journey. I loved hearing Laura's perspective on finding support (and the different forms it comes in) and I know you will too. I hope you enjoy listening! Born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Laura Stewart recognized her love for drawing and painting at an early age. A high school art class assignment to write and illustrate a children's book inspired her dream to make a “real” book. Luckily, she had many wonderful art teachers and professors who helped shape her into the successful design professional she is today. Eyelash Wishes is her first published book; she plans to create more, as her sons provide her with daily inspiration. When not spending her free time creating art and designs, she is a full-time Assistant Art Director by day and juggling a busy baseball schedule for both sons, by night. In May 2020, Laura and her husband Josh became grandparents to their first grandson. “Grandma and Grandpa” have been replaced by “Lolli and Pop” which served as the inspiration for Laura's publishing business name, LolliPop Stories. Here's what we covered on the episode: How Laura Got Started in Design + Jobs She's Had Along the Way () How Laura and I have known each other since high school, went to college together and how or families have been involved in the same activities  Laura shares that she has always been into art and tells us that in high school during a career fair, she met Denny Kaven, who was leading the graphic design program at Grand View University which inspired her to do graphic design as a major  When Laura started at Grand View University she double majored in graphic design and secondary art education, but later dropped her second major to focus on graphic design  When Laura was in college she met and became close with a girl who was a year older, and when her friend graduated, she went and worked for an agricultural publication, which is where Laura also ended up working after she graduated While working for the agricultural publication, Laura had been getting ads from other ad agencies to be in their magazine and she saw one agency was hiring so she applied and got the job, she started working from home and learned a lot more skills  About two years into the job, Laura thought she didn't want to work from home anymore, so she took a chance and applied at Two Rivers, a local marketing agency and spent the last 9 years there, and says she gained most of her experience there  In January, Laura stopped working at Two Rivers because of covid, but says she took it as an opportunity to take a break and decided to make her book, that has been on the back burner for years, a reality  Laura explains the processes for getting each of her jobs and explains for the agricultural publication, she didn't have to do much, for her second one she had to send in some of the ad work she had been doing and for Two Rivers, she did multiple interviews and shares she didn't have an online portfolio but brought in samples of her other projects to present   Why networking in this industry is so important — Laura says that's how she's been able to get her foot in the door with all of the companies she's worked at  After Laura lost her job, she spent two straight weeks rewriting her resume and creating an online portfolio and then put out on LinkedIn that she had lost her job and was looking for one — that post was seen by 1,000 people How someone saw her post and shared it with a guy who used to work with Laura at Two Rivers, he reached out to her and said they were looking to create a position at Mittera, a local advertising agency and they could use someone at her level, so she started working for them  Laura talks about how she created Mary Kay websites for consultants and says they were bright and bold, but says it was nice to have something outside of cattle    Laura explains her role at Mittera, which she says is different for her because at Two Rivers she was a very hands on art director, and at Mittera she leads a group of 3 designers, says she gets to draw more, and help out with different in-house projects that are different than anything else she's done  Making Her Dream Book a Reality () How Laura used her sons as inspiration for her book and in 2017 she got the idea for Eyelash Wishes from her son Ryne, and says the book is all about kid wishes that were made from wishing on eyelashes When Laura started her book, she didn't tell anyone about it until around Christmas, where she shared it with 5 other people who told her she should finish it — she convinced herself to just do it and has sold over 200 copies on Amazon, where you can still get it today  How Eyelash Wishes has sparked a fire in Laura to write other books and made her realize how many stories are all around her that she could use as inspiration  Laura shares that she illustrated all of Eyelash Wishes on her own by taking pictures of Ryne and then drawing them, she says that her drawing skills and graphic design skills helped her create this book all on her own    If anyone has a passion project they've been wanting to do, Laura says just do it, because it's really cool to say you did it in the end and if you want to write a children's book but have questions, reach out to Laura  Laura explains a lot of the little things you need to know when creating a book and says she found most of the information she needed online, so you can too  The best piece of advice Laura wants to give is to purchase multiple ISBN numbers because they can be kind of expensive, but you get a discount if you buy multiple and adds, once you get one book under your belt, you'll probably want to do another  How Laura found the original book she wrote in high school that inspired her to write a children's book and how she might revive that book and publish it In the future, Laura might have her son Ryne illustrate a book because he has that artistic ability and thinks it would be fun to collaborate with him  Buy Eyelash Wishes on Amazon, check out her website, Lollipop stories.com or connect with Laura on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter Laura talks about how she did weigh the option of doing freelance full-time and says it's not out of the question for the future, but she has always just stuck to doing side projects while working her full-time jobs for security    Links mentioned:   Eyelash Wishes on Amazon    LolliPop Stories Publishing Day 1 or more and Patrick and Odette are coaching with Paul.   Odette Rocked It and she is still here! Paul gave many stats about how a podcast survives in a pandemic.  Paul also learned so much from listening to Odette take the from seat on the podcast.  His discoveries among many include:   Focus on wholeness Be honest Be vulnerable Time has its own timeline Understanding your relationship with food Expand your team (you are not in this alone) Have Fun! Sobriety is not a curse.      Laura's Story   [16:04] Odette welcomes Laura   Laura's last drink was September 16, 2019.   Laura feels great and has ups and downs and is present and grateful.  She lives in Austin, Texas where she owns a spa and does bodywork and energy work.  She is working with Supernatural Recovery.  She is a single mom to an 8-year-old daughter and loves meditation and yoga.    [17:40]  Tell us about your path with drinking   Laura grew up in an alcohol abusive family.  She started smoking pot and LSD at 14.  She didn't want to drink because of her parent's drinking.  She was raped at 16 and started drinking to overcome her panic attacks.   She was imprisoned, tortured, and sexually abused for two years.  She escaped from her abuser at 18, went to college and her PTSD symptoms became really apparent.  She was hospitalized until she could become mentally stable.  She continued drinking for 20 years.  She was often functioning and often not, it swung back and forth.  She didn't have any rock bottom moments, she lived in rock bottom for several years.  After several false starts she was able to stop drinking in 2019.   [20:57] What was your inner dialogue when you started using alcohol?   Laura realized if she was drunk enough, she didn't have a panic attack.  She was doing things that weren't healthy, but it was how she survived.  She is also in recovery for an eating disorder.  As part of that journey, she realizes she developed a lot of maladaptive coping mechanism that were survival instincts to help her disassociate.   [23:27] How was sharing your abuse with the world?   Laura said she didn't share very much.  She minimized her early trauma.  Integrating her alcohol recovery with heavy trauma therapy has helped her and as her sobriety time increases, more memories surface surfaced.  The heavy trauma therapy helped her understand why it was so difficult for her to get sober.  Her trauma and alcoholism to hand in hand.    [25:29] Have recurring memories of trauma been a trigger for you?   Laura said sobriety has been an awakening process.  She has discovered some radical truths and uncovering new information about her trauma and her family of origin.  Her therapist has helped her reconcile those awakenings.   [26:35] How did you approach your healing journey?   Laura wrote a book about her journey which is part of Supernatural Recovery.  There are four cornerstones including:  caring for your physical body (nutrition, hydration, exercise), trauma relief (body work, energy work, plant medicine, acupuncture), calming your nervous system (finding new ways to handle your body when her nervous system was activated), forgiveness and self-compassion which been the part of it.  She is learning how to enjoy her life and avoid negative relationship patterns.   [29:20] How did you discover these alternative tools?   Laura said because of her body work practice, she is connected to many resources in the Austin recovery community. She learned to release trauma and find new ways to live her life.    [31:14] How was early sobriety for you?    Laura said she did not have a pink cloud.  She cried all day every day for the first 90 days.  Hiking daily, getting outside and the Recovery Elevator podcast were very helpful so she could be vulnerable and honest.  At about 90 days, yoga helped her to feel better.  When she began working with a somatic process, it helped her to become stronger and more committed.  The book, The Energy Codes was helpful and has become a cornerstone of her program.    [34:53] Tell me about the relationship between your alcohol recovery and your eating disorder?   Laura said she played addiction whack a mole for some time.  Healing isn't linear and learning to avoid self-abuse has ups and downs.   [37:20] What role does community have in your healing?   Laura said community is so important.  Reconnecting with your source energy, people, and the world when you are recovering is important.  She dipped her toes in AA and the 12 Steps, and found it wasn't for her.  The Austin based yoga recovery community has yoga and meditation classes that have been instrumental to her recovery.  Café RE was important to her in the early days.   [38:55] Do you still go to therapy?   Laura said yes!  She began therapy before she got sober.  Her therapist specializes in empaths and highly sensitives.  When Laura wanted to stop drinking, worked for a year and a half.   She had several false starts, and her therapist helped her get to the other side.  Her therapist has inspired her to pursue a master's degree in counseling.   [40:42] What has recovery made possible for you?   Laura said what she is building with Supernatural Recovery and writing a book that is about to get published.  Education is a part of her journey.  She has a better handle on her emotional reactions.  Service is also gift in her recovery.   [42:30] Do you still get cravings?   Laura said yes and she currently uses fancy olives.  In her early days she would take a shot of apple cider vinegar.  Calming her body and spending time in nature help.  The disease is to disconnect, and the medicine is to stay present.  Breathwork also helps.  Yoga has helped her train her mind to be her friend.    [44:45] What reactions from others have you experienced since you quit drinking?   Laura said people in her life were relieved, happy, and proud.  She has lost some friends along the way because she wasn't a happy, fun drinker. Sometimes people can't come with you on any awakening journey.  At the end of the day, you must choose yourself.  Letting go with gratitude helps avoid bad blood.    [46:58] Have you been able to identify any triggers?   Laura said her triggers are emotional, worrying about her daughter and getting hungry.  When she thinks she might want a drink, she now can recognize the trigger, let go of the thought and solve it with self-care.  Her daughter is learning to use those tools as well.    [49:14] What does a day in your life look like?   Laura said after dropping her daughter at school, she runs or walks, takes clients, yoga, works on her website or editing her book. On the weekends she spends time outside and hikes with friends.    Teaching her daughter about self-care and handling your emotions is important.  Her recovery has made her strong and help others heal.   [53:57] When does your book come out?   It is slated to be published through the Balboa press within the next 4-5 months.  She is excited share the broad menu of recovery with others.   [55:15] Rapid Fire Round   If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say? It's going to be okay.  You are an incredible, strong person.  You are going to get through this and help others.   What is your favorite NA beverage? Kin Euphorics https://www.kineuphorics.com   What are some of your favorite resources in recovery? Supernatural Recovery, Café RE, and yoga.   What's an unexpected perk of being sober? Her skin, her eyes are brighter and that increases her confidence.   What parting piece of guidance can you give to listeners? Have compassion for yourself.  The healing journey is not linear.  If you are trying and you haven't made it yet, realize the more you beat yourself up, the harder it gets.   You might need to say Adios to booze if … When a bottle is half empty and you go to the store because you are worried about running out.    Odette's Summary   Odette says a heartfelt thank you to those that help with the podcast, the listeners and to Paul for giving her the opportunity to be your host.   Upcoming events, retreats, and courses: Bozeman 2021 (August 18-22, 2021). She reported on current medical topics, educating viewers in Spanish on relevant health issues.  From 2010 to 2013 she served on the Board of Directors for the Texas Chapter of the American College of Physicians. She has been a very active ACP member and is a fellow of the college in April of 2014. She currently serves on the Hospitalist Committee of the chapter. After many years of practicing hospital medicine, Dr. Demoya decided to see patients at a Retirement and assisted living facility where she practices in a concierge manner. She is also a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Demoya has 2 daughters and enjoys traveling the world, hiking, and loves the culinary arts.   Rising After Burnout Burnout rarely comes out of nowhere, as Dr. Laura Demoya explains. Burnout usually has a slow and gradual approach - but an approach that, if you’re not paying close attention, can still take you completely unawares. When Laura experienced her burnout, she quickly realized she couldn’t keep on the way she was going. Leaving clinical medicine, she started working at a concierge practice for patients in retirement.  Laura describes her first experiences with life coaching as realizing that all her dreams are within reach if they’re actually what she wants to achieve. And that’s the best advice she can give you, too: if you want it, you can absolutely make it happen.   Cultivating Inner Peace and Self-Worth One of the biggest revelations Laura had was discovering her own sense of self-worth. She stopped punishing herself and started praising her accomplishments - even if those looked different than they used to. Laura cultivated a sense of peace and inner happiness that helped her figure out what truly mattered to her. Another big piece for her was learning when she needed to ask for help - and actually doing it. There is no shame in asking someone to help you when you feel you need it, but so often, women are hesitant and nervous about actually taking that step. Laura’s best advice for discovering her self-worth is to be happy with who you are and where you are now and to ask for help when you need it. Give yourself grace, create space, and find in yourself that peace and self-worth.   Homework for Women Physicians How do you find your own sense of peace? Today marks International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to all the amazing ladies around the world. On this special day, we’d like to pay tribute to the badass women who we have had the pleasure to have as guests on the show during 2020. Check out some of the awesome strategies and tactics which we have covered via these badass gals!   Sue Rice - Storytelling Tips Nicknamed the ‘female David Ogilvy’, Sue Rice is famous for writing award-winning copy for countless entrepreneurs and we chatted about her email copywriting tactics which enable her to deliver record-breaking open rates. One idea is to make connections between things that are seemingly unrelated. We are swimming in a sea of metaphors and part of it is just being conscious of it. One way to make it interesting and bring it into a fresher light, is extensive reading, watching movies, etc. The magic is in everything that’s around us.  Sue listens to the news on the BBC, which has very clever writers. She also uses an app called Clipboard where you can pick the categories you want to follow. It’s important to do a little bit of collective brainstorming every day to see what people are talking about, otherwise, you are defining what you are doing for them on your terms, not theirs. You want to be entering the conversation in their head and if you are not watching that, it’s hard to do.   Molly Mahoney - Facebook Engagement Molly Mahoney of The PrePared Performer, is legendary for her Facebook marketing skills. She’s a wizard at doing Facebook lives and getting organic reach. We chatted all about how Molly is able to get high ticket coaching clients, right from Facebook, how to grow Facebook groups, and how to get interaction on Facebook pages with her four-step process. We loved her advice in regards to getting more engagement on Facebook. She tells us that the rules have changed for bots and there are four types of messages, one of them being a confirmed event reminder. When they comment on the post, they confirm to the bot they want to be reminded of more information. Another way to use this is that when they say yes, you ask them if they want to be reminded about all of your content coming out.  Once they confirm, you want to make sure that button opens up to another piece of the conversation so you are engaging in another conversation within that 24 hours.  Another strategy is the “Unlock and Share Button”, so when they are in your bot after they get the show notes or whatever it is that you are giving, send another message a minute later that says you have a bonus gift they can get if they share your video, and if they want to access, just click here to unlock and share the video.    Lisa Cherney - The More You GFR, The More Impact (And Money) You Will Make Lisa Cherney, now known as The Queen of Clarity, is the host of the ground-breaking confession-based GFR Podcast show for successful soulful entrepreneurs and founder of the GFR Squad, a lively community that is serious about embracing the GFR lifestyle and living a life without regrets. One of her GFR commandments is “Don’t worry about being normal” and the confession is “Where are you not speaking your truth?” That’s where the juice is, determining what is your soapbox. If you weren’t worrying about offending anyone or breaking any laws, what would you want to say? People are too concerned about what strategy they are going to use, but eventually, the strategy will emerge. The more you get real, the more impact you will make. So the first thing is to determine if you are ready. If you’ll do all the strategies and make the investment, this is where to go next. If you are ready, choose the confession question that hits you in the gut and go from there. Just pick the one question, take some time with it, and it will do wonders.   Sara Christensen - Defending Your Business Our chat with Sara was really eye-opening as she talks about how one little post sent her world in a spiral, leading to an all-out war waged on her business, thousands of hateful messages, and even death threats. You want to be extra careful what you are putting out there and what you are involved in. If you don’t already have procedures in place of your social media and email communications, you should make sure that whatever you put out in the world is not going to offend or piss someone off. If you are using outside resources for VA’s, you may run a risk. You don’t want someone working on your team, that’s not as invested or doesn’t understand the complications of posting something that might be harmful. Understand the power of social media which is so amazing yet also be weaponized against you. Be mindful to use it as a building block for your business. Consider if there other ways to diversify where your clients are coming from. Ask yourself, “What if your social media channels got taken away today - what other plans do you have in place?”   Ilana Wechsler - In-Market Audience Targeting  We also chatted with Ilana Wechsler of Green Arrow Digital, who is a former data analyst, turned Pay Per Click marketing expert. She detailed her paid ad puzzle technique and how to make the different pieces of your marketing puzzle work together.  Google is shifting away from the concept of targeting content science to targeting more in regards to who you are as a person, which is like identity-based targeting. One of the ways they are doing this is with in-market audiences, which is very short-term intent-based searching. So you can match your Facebook targeting to Google’s in-market audiences. For example, consider if you are suddenly in the market to buy a car, where you don’t normally search online for car information. Then there are what’s called affinity audiences which is your long-term behavior or things you are looking at online often. So basically you're starting with the people that are already going to your website and looking at who they are and what their actions are, and then slowly expanding out more and more as you get additional data on who these people are that are already coming to your site. If you find those audiences work, especially on the Google side of things, you can apply that in-market audience to your search quadrant and also to the YouTube quadrant. It's a process of systematically building out your puzzle, based on data and if something doesn't work then it doesn't make sense to apply it to a different quadrant.     Susie Moore - Removing Your Blocks We loved chatting with Susie Moore, author of Stop Checking Your Likes as it’s something we’ve all fallen into. One of the things she discussed was how to remove your blocks. First, you need to state as a fact, that you are worthy of receiving. Susie uses the example of being out on a hike with your friends and you go missing. Would your friends consider if you were worth finding, asking if you were thin enough, popular enough, etc.? If this is true in the physical world, this is true on all levels. Even if you have a million likes or followers, it does not alter your worthiness. If you can accept this as a fact and don’t question it, you will know that you are worthy.  Most people spend too long reaching out to people because of fear of rejection. Often it means it’s just not the right fit or the right time. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. Most people give up after the 2nd or 3rd follow-up. If you keep going, people eventually cave. A confident person is simply willing to be rejected, and to them, it’s no big deal.    Lisa Buyer - Social Media Platforms With Traction We had a great chat with Lisa from PR Secrets on using social media for branding and PR purposes. She covers a host of topics such as newsjacking, chatbots, futurists, SEO, visual reporting, podcasting, and what’s new in putting together a press release.  One of the things we discussed was the latest platforms that have traction. For example, if you are featured in a third-party publication, you can take that article and put it on Facebook and run ads to it targeting people who work at other media publications. It’s a win-win, as the journalist is getting more exposure, and you are getting that third-party credibility, so it’s a smart modern day PR strategy. You can target the publication’s following and run $1 a day ads, as taught by Dennis Hu. You can also take that targeting strategy to other platforms.  Tik Tok is the most talked about social media platform lately, and while Lisa doesn't  have any clients where it’s a good match, from a storytelling standpoint it’s entertaining. From a PR perspective, instead of having her clients start an account, they are looking to share content to the influencer’s audience where the influencer would talk about the brand and create content around a theme. One cool thing about Tik Tok is there are so many cool filters and ways to create videos that are very creative, then take those videos and republish it to your main social channels.    Felicia Pagesh - Campaign Tactics  We had a great chat with Felicia Pagesh of Activate Branding, who dove into fun topics such as conversion optimizations, webinars, landing pages, and other useful techie talks. One tip she gave us is that when you are building out your campaign, you should already know what the objections are that people have. That is what’s included in your sales sequence to overcome those objections. Everything in your webinar should also be designed to overcome those objections, so instead of creating separate FAQs as part of your follow-up, you can pop that transcription sequence into your follow-up for anyone who matches the behavior of someone who is interested but hasn’t bought yet.  Also, give people an option to download an mp4 into an mp3 to listen to your webinar. If you have an audible call to action, keep your URL very simple and easy to follow. As long as it’s trackable, it’s worth testing. It doesn't really cost much more time or money to repurpose and it’s like getting free sales.   Erin Pheil - Fixing Your Mind Erin Pheil from MindFix Group chatted with us all about fixing your mind and getting past those mental roadblocks that get you stuck. You can deal with perfectionism by being compassionate with yourself. You will be able to clear out that pattern so you don’t have to deal with it on a constant basis. A pattern can be emotional or behavioral. For example, we may be triggered into getting angry when someone gives us feedback or we may get anxious whenever we are on camera. Other people may have behavioral patterns like every time it’s time to talk about money, you change the subject. We have these different behaviors and emotions we get stuck in over and over, and if you can identify the pattern, you can work backward and clear it out once you know what it is and what you want to change. Once you do that, it clears up so much energy, space, and time in your life. At the core, humans behave according to what they believe to be true. So if you are walking down the street and see a cat and you believe they are dangerous, you will avoid it. But if you believe cats are awesome, you’ll go over to pet it. When you have a pattern, you take a fundamental truth that humans act based on what they believe to be true. If you're acting or experiencing feelings in a certain way, you believe something that's keeping you looped in there.    Gabby Bernstein - How To Detach We chatted with Gabby Bernstein, author of Super Attractor who gave us some very practical tools to work through some tough stuff that we are all going through in our personal lives. She also talked about what she refers to as her “Rage on the Page” method and the benefits of listening to a specific playlist while writing. Gabby has been practicing with a method based on Dr. John Sarno’s work, who was known for healing back pain, and whose work was based on the fact that our physical pain is a manifestation of our impermissible rage and there is a mind-body prescription to heal that. Gabby has renamed a similar prescription given to her by a friend that deals with journaling, calling it “rage on the page”.  The basis of this is that you journal about the rage for 20 minutes. Even if you don’t think you have rage, it could be as simple as thinking “Why did I eat that bad thing this morning?” Next, meditate for 20 minutes. Gabby also puts on bi-lateral music. She practices a therapeutic method called EMDR, and this is similar to stimulating to each side of the brain. When you start to stimulate the bilateral brain functioning, it allows the resource part of your brain to access some of the information stored hidden and in many ways to see. It allows your brain to unpack what has been hidden.    Kim Krause Schwalm - Copywriter Hiring Tips Kim Krause Schwalm joined us on the show and gave us a boatload of awesome strategies and insight from her long copywriting career. When hiring a copywriter, look at their writing and their portfolio and see if they are passionate, curious, and put hard work into the promo. If you are not well versed in copywriters and are reading a sample and you can see if the headline grabs you (read it at night when you are tired) and makes you want to read further.   Sometimes it’s hard to write your own copy and one thing you can do is to ask someone to give you a critique. If you like what they say, maybe that’s the person you want to hire. That’s one way to see how they work as well. As for communication falling off, the question is how are you paying them? Sometimes if you go back and forth on price, then you probably don’t want to work with them. It often comes down to whether you are getting what you pay for, and you still want to make sure you are getting a good value as it can be a big investment. Have a fair deal and pay them 25-50% upfront. You could have a phase where you have different steps that allow you to move along to minimize some of the risks, plus they will have some built-in milestones they have to meet. Most professional copywriters will agree to a schedule upfront so everyone is on the same page.    Laura Gale - Getting Your Book Published Laura Gale, author, and fellow podcaster joined to talk all about the step-by-step method she uses to guide people to finally get that book published. People discount their own stories as not being compelling all the time. There’s a lot of interesting things in the day-to-day to give people a peek behind the scenes. If you can pinpoint something to one specific moment where something surprised you, or it was unexpected, then those are the moments that are really interesting. Story structure has become a bit of an obsession and people are overthinking it. While the hero’s journey is great, it can take a lot out of it and not every story is going to fit that structure. The more you can rely on emotion and specific moments, the stronger your story will be. For a long time ghostwriting was seen as cheating, but if you are an entrepreneur you want to have other people taking care of the stuff you are not best at, and writing is a skill that takes a lot of time to get good at. The idea that it’s not really your book if you didn’t write it yourself doesn’t ring true. When Laura puts it together, it’s all their voice and all of the material and style is generated by the client. She is more of a vessel to get that story published. Most celebrities who have ever written a book are almost always ghostwritten.    Melanie Benson - How To Spice Up Your Topic If It Is Less Than Exciting On our episode with Melanie Benson, she gave us some great tips on how to follow the ‘golden thread’ to pull the right audience into your world, what to do if you are just starting out in your podcasting journey and how to define your audience and make sure they are a good fit for your business. One way is to think of a formula that connects back to your work (not the Smart Goal formula which is way overused). Melanie created a formula called the ROCS Method: R - Relevant O - Outcome Driven C - Credibility Boosting - people often miss this but try to include it in your intro. Talk about case studies or client successes so people pay attention. Keep it natural, don’t be a name-dropper. S - Specific, find a way to put specificity in it, i.e. can you do it in 90 days? Is it a 4 part formula? If your message isn’t converting, chances are something in this formula is wrong.   References and Links Mentioned: Are you ready to be EPIC with us?! She has run countless 50K and 50 milers and has completed well over 21 hundred mile ultras that include some of the following well known races: Heartland, Rocky Raccoon, Land Between The Lakes, Arkansas Traveler, Spirit of the Osage, Black Hills, Tunnel Hill, Hawk Hundred, Snow Drop, No Business, Hennepin Hundred and several others. Laura is not only an ultra runner, but is married to Michael who is an ultra runner and her son is an ultra runner at the age of 15. It is a family affair and they love it that way and it keeps the competition and training going year round in their home. What if there was a place you could visit to understand the infiniteness of your soul and how all of your lifetimes are woven into the larger fabric of the universe? The good news is, there is! Interest in the Akashic Records has skyrocketed in the spiritual community over the last decade, and Leena Lemos is sitting down with Angel Guide Laura Byrne to demystify the Records and get a better grasp on all that they have to offer for our soul remembering, spiritual gift development, and self-healing. In this episode, Laura breaks down: What the Records are How to access the Records How your records are unique to you and your soul What you can discover about yourself in the records What can you discover about other people, places, animals, and things in the Records The sacred rules and practices for using the Records Myths about what the Records are and are not And so much more ABOUT LAURA BYRNE Laura was always very empathic and sensitive as a child. She had a spiritual awakening in her late 20’s. It happened after the birth of her son when she began seeing those who had passed, Angels, and everything in-between. Laura found a mentor in the U.K.and studied with him to learn all about astral travel, remote viewing, energy work, and deeper spiritual truths. After seeing the angels around for a while, Laura also began training in the heavenly realms with Archangel Gabriel, Michael, Chamuel, Uriel, and Jophiel among many others, going to their schools of growth at night. The archangels taught Laura, using Angel energy, work to protect and guide people. When Laura started hearing about the Akashic records in spiritual circles she was intrigued and started learning and training. When the Archangels started to appear in Laura’s readings, this leads to creating her invocation and way of connecting with them in the Akashic Records. Through all of her experiences and wisdom Laura developed the Angelic Akashic Records program to share what she’s learned with others. When someone sees Laura today, they see a spirited entrepreneur that is married to an English gentleman that adores her. People do not know that Laura had to overcome the unimaginable to get to where she is today. In this episode, Laura shares her story for the first time. This episode is longer than our typical 15-20 min length; however, I know you will find it time well spent. Parts of Laura's story touch upon sensitive subjects, such as sexual abuse of a minor and torture, so you may want to use headphones if you have children nearby. Laura was raised in Alabama by an overly protective single-mother who, to protect Laura, forbade her from even playing in the neighbor's yard or going for sleepovers. What her mother did not know, however, was that the real monsters lurked inside the family. When Laura was just nine years old, they repeatedly molested her over many years and made her keep it secret. Eager to escape the abuse at home, Laura left the moment she turned eighteen with only a backpack full of clothes and a teddy bear. She married her boyfriend the next day to make sure her mother couldn't get her back. Two days later, her husband beat her. Thus began Laura's string of abusive marriages, including one sadistic ex-husband who locked her up and administered torture so cruel that it only exists in the most brutal prisoner of war camps. In Laura's words, she probably would have stayed, because by then, she believed that she deserved what she got. Then one day, while being pummeled on the ground, Luara looked up and saw her toddler's face, and something inside of her snapped. Despite having only a high school education and no money, that night, Laura waited until her husband was sound asleep, grabbed her daughter, and made for a desperate escape. “We can all endure disaster and tragedy, and triumph over them-if we have to. We may not think we can, but we have surprisingly strong inner resources that will see us through if we will only make use of them. We are stronger than we think.” — Dale Carnegie Hear Laura tells her story of surviving the unimaginable, her dangerous escape from a psychopath, how she found love, and how she turned making beautiful soup from a hobby to curb PTSD nightmares to a blossoming business that ships globally today. Today our expert guest is Laura Powers, an entertainer, celebrity psychic, actress, model, host, singer, writer, and speaker. She's the host of the popular television show Behind the Scenes with Laura Powers and the top 100 podcast Healing Powers Podcast, the author of seven books, and has been featured on several national television channels and networks including Buzzfeed, NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, The CW, Jetset, and more. Growing up, Laura knew there was something different about her — she could see dead people. Other people didn't see what she did, so she grew up trying to ignore what she was sensing and not tell anyone about it. As she grew older, her abilities only got stronger, to the point where she could no longer block it out. In college, a family friend described a ghost that Laura had seen but never told anyone about. This confirmed to her that what she was seeing was real, and she then had to start deciding what she was going to do with this ability. She learned that, as she had been blocking out her abilities, she was also blocking out her intuition. She started taking classes to develop her psychic abilities and tapped into her creative work more, and eventually transitioned her business and lifestyle into being a psychic. During this global pandemic we're all facing, everyone is being expected to go within and sit with ourselves. Looking within ourselves and using mindfulness practices such as meditation to check in on what thoughts we are thinking is important to keep down stress levels. When Laura recognized how deeply connected the mind, body, and spirit are, she wanted to learn more about that connection and share it with the world. In her podcast, Healing Powers Podcast, Laura talks about the ways different parts of our body, spirit, and mind all interplay and affect each other. If you are facing challenges in one area of your life, don't focus on just that one area. Your mental state affects your physical state, which affects your spiritual state. They are all connected, and in order to see truly effective and lasting change, you need to address them all. And that lasting change is possible if you just look beyond the individual problems you are trying to face and start aiming even higher.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “You are way more powerful than you think, and you can have more. For me, what happened during the recession was everything that was taken away from me — my marriage, my house, the way I made my living, my state of health at the time — I perceived to be a bad thing when I was going into it, but everything that was taken away was because there was something better for me. Sometimes I think we don't even realize how great we can have it. We're aiming here when we need to aim way up here. Miraculous transformations are possible for whatever you're feeling, whether it's health issues or economic challenges or maybe you want to be a singer or do whatever you want to do. Don't feel like it's too late.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Assessing the San Juan del Sur Rental Market

San Juan del Sur Real Estate Podcast with Joao Mucciolo

Laura Taylor-Johnson joins me today to share her take on the San Juan del Sur rental market. How’s the rental market in San Juan del Sur? To answer that question, I’ve invited Laura Taylor-Johnson, the head of Selva Pacifica, to join me for today’s video.  Originally from Canada, Laura has been coming down to Nicaragua for 12 years—the last 10 of them to build her thriving luxury rental business. Additionally, she was recently named the top Airbnb host in the country by Airbnb, Inc., and she’s currently working with them to increase the visibility of Nicaragua to potential travelers.  What does Selva Pacifica do? When Laura started collecting homes for rent 10 years ago, she realized there was no dedicated concierge service in the area. That’s how Selva Pacifica was born, and they assist property owners with their rentals. As indicated above, they work specifically with higher-end homes in amazing locations. Not only do they work with the owners to ensure they get the best guests, but they work with the travelers to ensure they get the best houses. “What will differentiate you is the quality of your home.” On top of that, they handle all the advertising and marketing for their properties, and they have a team dedicated to showing guests the best side of San Juan del Sur. When guests leave, they follow up with them so owners have plenty of five-star reviews to help the exposure and profitability of their investments. They currently have 506 five-star reviews under their belt.  Laura says that the rental market started slowly at the beginning of last year, but after that, we saw a progressive increase in tourists and home rentals. Last quarter, occupancy averaged over 60% in most of Selva Pacifica’s homes. A lot of their homes not only covered their costs, but they made a nice profit heading into 2020.  If you’re thinking about buying a luxury rental (or you already own one that hasn’t been very successful), Laura’s first piece of advice is to reach out to a professional to help you. Starting off in a saturated market like San Juan del Sur won’t be easy if you don’t have a professional by your side. If you contact Selva Pacifica, they’ll visit your home and discuss your goals with you.  With so many rental homes in the market, she also advises differentiating your home. Every rental in San Juan del Sur has a view; that won’t differentiate you in this market. What will differentiate you is the quality of your home. You need to make sure it’s well-maintained and evokes your personal style. If you have a nice house with a view but don’t put any love and care into it, you won’t see a return on your investment.  If you have any questions for Laura, you can email her at selvapacifica@icloud.com. If you’d like to know more about Selva Pacifica, feel free to visit their website selvapacifica.com.  As always, if you have any real estate questions, don’t hesitate to give me a call or send me an email. I’d love to help you.

Laura Rasmussen, a 17-year breast cancer survivor, was in the podcast studio today to talk about her experience with breast cancer. She was diagnosed with stage 2, type 2 breast cancer at the age of 41 years. Laura had a clean mammogram in January but in August that year, she recalls crossing her arms and finding what she described as a "frozen pea". Laura underwent a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. Laura talked about the struggles she experienced during her treatments with exhaustion, sores on her head and in her mouth, and going into medical menopause. She openly shares how medical menopause impacted the intimacy with her husband and how she feels that it may have been part of the reason for their eventual divorce. Laura shares the impact that having a support system and support group had in her recovery.   Show Notes: Laura was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41. Laura had gone in for a routine mammogram in January 200, which indicated no concerns. She had just switched insurance companies after starting a new job. In August, Laura crossed her arms and felt what she describes as a "frozen pea" in her breast. She underwent diagnostic testing. The radiologist suggested that she did not have anything to worry about but 4 days later, she received a call from her doctor asking to see her the next day in his office. When Laura went for her appointment and the doctor told her she had breast cancer, Laura thought he had the wrong person. Her doctor had called her at home the night before and left a voice message. Her husband listened to the message but did not seem to understand it and deleted the message. She was in complete shock and even though she knew downtown Phoenix well, she got lost on her way home. Laura called her employer to share her diagnosis and said that if they were not willing to support her, she would leave. Her employer was supportive and bought her a fruit basket every month while she was going through her treatments. Laura's tumor was 2.2 centimeters. It was discovered that there was more cancer behind the frozen pea. At that time, BRCA testing was just coming into being and because she had no children, was adopted, and did not have any siblings that she knew of she did not undergo genetic testing. Laura's cancer was determined to be estrogen and progesterone positive. One doctor told her that estrogen saved her life while another doctor had told her that estrogen caused the cancer. Laura underwent a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. She lost her hair during chemotherapy and learned how men are able to go from the shower to the door in 15 minutes. She suffered from sores in her mouth and on her head. Laura also went into menopause during chemotherapy. Radiation was difficult. She felt like it kicked her butt. She believes that she would not have made it through the second half of radiation if not for her parents. Laura worked throughout her treatments. She had surgery on a Friday and returned to work the following Tuesday. She shaved her head in preparation for chemotherapy but wore a hat or do-rag on her head. Her new employer told her that she was not permitted to wear a hat to work. Her employer learned of her cancer when she took her hat off and revealed her bald head. The residents at the retirement facility where she worked were unaware that she had cancer. At Halloween, she dressed up as a biker chic. The residents thought she was really into Halloween and shaved her head as part of her costume. Laura had bought a wig but only wore it a few times. Laura talked about her support system, which included her parents, ex-husband, and a couple of girlfriends. She shared that she didn't really let anyone in as much as she should have; she really just plowed through. When she completed chemo and before starting radiation, her husband thought things would return to normal. Laura feels that the demise of her marriage may have in part been related to the cancer. She shared that being in medical menopause because of the chemotherapy was difficult for her and her husband. Sex was not enjoyable. She described it as feeling like sandpaper. One of the therapists helped her to realize that what she experienced on the outside may have also been happening on the inside. Attending a support group was helpful for Laura. She learned a lot through her experience with the support group. She shared that the seasoned survivors brought humor into a difficult situation. Laura found support through a retreat called Casting for Recovery, which is a fly fishing event for breast cancer survivors. Laura shared that she learned a lot about herself on that weekend retreat. She began to understand that she hid behind her work as a defense mechanism. She quit her job and started her own business. Laura has started to date and has been up front with her cancer experience. She feels that no topics are off the table and that none of us come without any baggage. Cancer is a part of who she is and if someone is not equipped to handle it, that is fine. Laura suggests that those who are newly diagnosed should get into support group. When diagnosed, people are shocked and unsure of the pros and cons of the different treatment options. Those in the support group will give the good, the bad, and the ugly. She feels that newly diagnosed individuals get much better candid information. In addition, support groups have information on other resources available for breast cancer survivors. Get self into support group. Shell shocked and unsure of what the pros and cons are of each of the treatment options. People in the support group will give the good, bad, and ugly. Get much better candid information. Also have information on other things that are available for breast cancer survivors. Because of these support groups, she discovered Casting for Recovery and dragon boating.

When Laura and Linda first met, at an event several years ago in Florida, Laura was surprised to hear Linda was leading the Leprosy Mission Scotland. She, like many others, had been under the impression leprosy had been eradicated; upon discovering that was not the case, Laura became curious and engaged Linda in today’s conversation about her work and what’s happening with the disease. Over the course of this conversation, the women cover a number of topics including the vision for the organization’s future work, what can be accomplished when a group of passionate people come together focused on a common cause, why developing yourself and your people is the key to success, and how self-care feeds everything! Linda has been with the Leprosy Mission Scotland for 21 years, starting as its Executive Director and growing into the organization’s CEO. In her role, she travels the world to connect with colleagues, raise funds, evaluate the organization’s operations, and meet with and learn the stories of the people who have been diagnosed with this disease. Like so many others, Linda learned the hard way that self-care is required if you have any intention of being productive, effective, and having any kind of staying power in whatever role you play. The pervasive thinking that putting in long hours, always putting the business first, is some kind of ‘badge of honor,’ is nonsense in Linda’s experience. “God designed us to take time out for rest and relaxation, to enjoy the splendor and wonder of his creation,” she explained. “We plan down time for machines and maintenance of equipment and systems, but not for ourselves.” It’s with this perspective that she is leading her organization and has built that mindset into her culture. Her team does not work when they are on holiday, and the understanding is that if you leave a message or send an email to someone who is out of the office for this purpose, you won’t get a response until they return to work. “I use humor to get this message across,” said Linda. “My ‘out of office’ message is in the voice of my laptop, explaining in a Reply email that ‘Linda went on holiday and left me here in the office…’” Her focus on connecting with and attending to the needs of the people in her work and life are evident in her practices and communication. Linda educates Laura on the current state of Leprosy, how many people are diagnosed with it daily (the number is staggering if you stop to think about it), the mindset issues associated with contracting and treating the disease, and what the Leprosy Mission is striving to achieve: Leprosy defeated and Lives Transformed. Listen in as Linda shares her insights about inspiring her team – “People are keen to be part of a winning team and they want to make a powerful impact.” She speaks to the idea of and focus on working herself and her colleagues out of a job when the disease is no longer an active health issue. And how she’s invested in her own personal growth and the intentional development of not only her team, but her colleagues in the other Leprosy Mission organizations around the world. In the end, Linda says she wants her epitaph to read: “She made a real difference.” As you listen in on today’s conversation, I’m sure you’ll agree, Linda Todd has already made a real difference and continues to do so. About Linda Todd Linda is the Country Leader and CEO of The Leprosy Mission Scotland. She joined TLMS as Executive Director in March 1998. Linda has extensive leadership, fundraising, coaching and management experience gained from over three decades of working in the Voluntary Sector and continual professional development. She is a Diploma-qualified member of the Institute of Fundraising, a Chartered member of CIPD, and a John Maxwell authorized Coach and Speaker. Under Linda’s leadership, TLMS holds Investors in People Platinum. She plays an active role within the Global Fellowship, currently chairing the Member Review Working group; a member of the TLM Trust India Board, and the reference group for the Leadership Development Program. Linda also plays an active role within Scotland through various umbrella-organizations – The Scottish International Development Alliance and the Institute of Fundraising Scotland. She lives on the south side of Glasgow where she attends Auldhouse Community Church. Other areas of service include the position of Treasurer for Glasgow Street Pastors and a member of Thornliebank Community Council. Other than her faith, her three great passions are her pug, Carletto (who thinks he’s another member of the staff team), her bolt-hole in the East Neuk of Fife, and The Leprosy Mission Scotland, though not necessarily always in that order! When Laura and her new husband decided to get pregnant, things started off smoothly. Having type 1 diabetes she knew she'd have to be extra careful, but all seemed well. As you'll hear in this episode, though, the road to having a baby had a few bumps. What was to come once Laura, an architect, welcomed Freddy into the world was the most unexpected part: trauma from an accident resurfaced when she faced complications during childbirth. Laura never expected to face mental health issues, but when Freddy was still small she found herself having intrusive thoughts, anxiety and OCD tendencies. She shares honestly how that affected her experience of early motherhood, how she got help and what made the biggest difference.

Ever since she was a she was a child, Laura Powers saw ghosts and spirits. She knew this made her different, so she tried to block out and ignore her gift. But her sight only got stronger and more intense. In college, things got too much - she sometimes couldn’t tell between ghosts and “real” people. This took her to breaking point, physically and spiritually. But she fought back, by tackling her health (check out Episode 260 to find out how she healed her body from the inside) and by learning to connect with the angelic presences all around.    We all go through tough times, and sometimes this can be a lonely experience. But if you’re feeling stuck, it’s ok to ask for guidance. It’s ok to ask angels.   Who are angels? Angels are divine beings of light, souls that have crossed over and returned here as guides and helpers. They are here to help us with our life missions. They’re not limited by physical reality, so they can do many things at once. They WANT to help. And they can assist you with anything - whether it’s landing that dream job or finding a parking spot. How do you ask? Just make sure you’re clear and specific about the help you want, and speak it out loud. They are listening.   Busting the fortune teller myth Let’s bust a myth right now: a psychic is a NOT fortune teller. We have free will and choices. Psychics can’t really tell the future. There might be a general plan for you, but ultimately you decide what happens in your life. When Laura gives a reading, she does it based on what she senses from you right now - however, you can change that path by making different choices, if you want to. You can manifest whatever you desire.   Yes, it’s easy to get stuck into societally acceptable goals and lose sight of what makes you truly happy, what you’re really passionate about. When you learn to listen to your higher self and your guides, you align with what’s meant to be your path and purpose. Laura can help you connect with that higher you. Click here to book a psychic reading with Laura.   Pets - your soul tribe and spirit guides: Did you know your pets say a lot about you? They’re part of your soul tribe, and chances are you were connected in a previous life. Your dog might have been your horse, your cat might have been your sister. If your pet is troubled, they’re mirroring something that is going on in your life, that you might not even be aware of. If they’ve crossed over, they still want to communicate with you and protect you. Tune into this episode to hear Laura connecting with Alli’s dog Charlotte and Vince’s childhood pet D.O.G., and the jaw-dropping messages they have for their owners from the other side. You can book a reading with Laura and connect with your pets, whether they’re still with you or have passed on.   Learning from past lives: What can you learn from your past life? Tons. By looking at what happened in previous lives we can better understand what’s happening in our life today. Whatever’s happening right now, we’ve already gone through it in the past. If you have trouble with boundaries, receiving, or relationships - often counselling doesn’t go deep enough because it only deals with your present state. But if you can get into your ancestral past, then you can get insight into what you need to learn and how you can heal. Traumatic experiences from past lives could be dictating phobias in your present, and letting those experiences go can zap those fears into nothingness. Laura does past life readings to connect you with your past life and help you thrive in the present.   True Crime: Do police work with psychics? Maybe they should… Laura also helps families who have been victims of crime, to discover the truth and let go.   Tune in to hear her readings about these crimes: Did Stephen Avery murder that woman in Making a Murder? Missing Maura Murray - Where is she? Is she alive? Is Michael Jackson really a child molester?   Ultimately, we all have the power of psychic vision… but we lose it early on because society doesn’t accept it. Laura Powers was born in the same part of France as one of the world’s most famous psychics: Joan of Arc. In a sense, it was her destiny to become a clairvoyant. But just like all journeys, Laura had to overcome many obstacles before finding her true path.   Having been thin all her life, at 30 years old Laura was on the edge of obesity. She had gained a ton of weight, and nothing she did was helping her lose it. She had bad skin, sleep problems, leaky gut, and PCOS. She was also unemployed and in a toxic marriage.   So how did she heal her body and transform her life to become a celebrity psychic, model, writer, actress, singer, producer and podcaster?   She tuned in, listened to her intuition, and connected with her guardian angels. There are angels everywhere, just waiting for you to reach out and ask for guidance. When she did, they answered. Knowing she wasn’t alone gave Laura the courage to make choices from a place of love and hope.   She transformed her diet, quitting diary, soy and wheat. Did you know gluten is one of the major factors in inflammation? And where there’s inflammation, there’s chronic disease. For Laura, this inflammation was so severe than after she quit wheat, she didn’t just lose weight, she dropped two shoe sizes! And then she discovered the she had parasites (Laura used Dr. Todd’s Microbe Formulas to get rid of these, and a huge tape worm!).   But healing has to be holistic to be complete - that means you have to go beyond diet and exercise to really heal. Take excess weight, for example. The body stores toxins in fat cells, as a way of protecting your organs from toxic damage. So if you’re in a toxic situation, or surrounded by toxic people, your body hangs on to that fat - no amount of dieting and working out will help. Until you do the inner work. When Laura left her marriage, she lost 30 pounds almost instantly.   Your emotions literally change the chemical structure of your cells with every single thought. If you don’t believe us, check out The Hidden Messages in Water. This groundbreaking work involved meditating over water, sending it either love or hate, and then taking photographs of the water molecules. The water that had been loved showed perfectly crystalized patterns. The water that had been hated was chaotic, misshapen and fragmented. We are made up of over 80% water. So what do you think is happening to your body when you are constantly hating it, or if you’re stuck in self-doubt, or are always criticizing yourself or someone else? Or if you’re always around negative people? Exactly. That’s why it’s so important to do the inner work, and take a step back from toxic relationships. Connecting with your intuition and psychic wisdom really helps with this.   How to access psychic wisdom: Find some quiet time and pay attention to your intuitive messages. Don’t be afraid - you’re not trapped in any situation. Ask angels for guidance - they’re all around, just waiting to help you. Practice, the Universe is always trying to communicate with you. If you pay attention, you’ll notice the signs. It’s a conversation: ask! Book a psychic reading with Laura.   On the next episode, Laura’s back to talk about ghosts, angels and manifesting! Ride Every Stride | Horsemanship and Personal Growth with Van Hargis

The coming episodes are going to be tackling a trend I’ve seen lately from our listener questions and the clinics I’ve been hosting–and it has to do with the mental side of horsemanship. Often times our brain gets in the way of our ride more than the horse does. And one of the key parts of our brain to exercise is our imagination. When Laura first came to me she told me that she rode horses as a kid but fell out of it later on in life. She told me she was dreaming of riding horses, and that dream was incredibly important. We’re going to talk about those dreams and the imagination to make them happen. Key Takeaways We’ve all been caught in daydreams before—imagining riding down a beach, through pasture, or by a herd of mooing cows. Often times this can be seen as unproductive or a waste of time. We’re adults, right? We live in reality. But the only way to change that reality, move forward and grow, is to dream and then take action on those dreams. As kids our imagination can get us in trouble. We might climb a tree and jump on a cow’s back just to see what happens. But there’s nothing wrong with that in a certain sense—visualizing new things, trying them out, and even when failing—learning how to grow and move forward. I think we all still need to dream like kids dream—big and bold. We can let our experience as adults help out with the logistics of that dream, but you have to imagine it first. My grandma used to say “Yard by yard life is hard, but inch by inch it’s a cinch.” Take small steps to your dreams, because often times we have to overcome obstacles to get there. It takes a lot of time and effort, but taking it one step at a time makes the journey much easier and enjoyable. Worrying about how you’ll get to your dream is creating obstacles that don’t exist yet. Worry about the why, then just take a step. The how is going to change all the time. Let us know what your dream is over on our Facebook page—and just as important, what you’re gonna do to take a step towards it Remember—dream big and dream like a kid.   *Also, if you’re a fan of the show please take time to head over and leave us an Itunes Review to give Laura and myself a glimpse of how we’ve helped you or what we could do better to help you ride every stride.

Laura has given talks at conferences like BlogHer and South by Southwest, and has spoken about the value of independent entrepreneurship at the White House. She’s also appeared in Forbes, Fast Company, Mashable, CNET, and other major publications. Does it ever feel like some mundane rule is holding you back from fully taking the leap in your business? This week’s guest, Laura Roeder, believes (and I agree), that sometimes rules are meant to be broken. Sometimes you need start taking action and then ask for forgiveness later. Laura has bootstrapped Meet Edgar to $5 Million in revenue, which is an incredible feat. However, “only” making $5 Million in revenue was holding her back from  networking events that were looking for bigger, more profitable businesses. That didn’t stop Laura, though! She went right ahead and applied to events that were looking for businesses making $10 Million or more. Want to know what happened? She was accepted! They were happy to bring her to the event because they wanted to have smaller businesses that were on track for major growth. If Laura hadn’t broken the rules and applied for these events (that was technically out of her reach), she never would have had the opportunity. What are YOU holding YOURSELF back from? If you’re tired of holding yourself back because you’re afraid to step on toes by breaking the rules, this episode of Success Unfiltered is a MUST LISTEN! Laura shares how she and her team came up with the name, “Meet Edgar.” When Laura was 22 years old she went to a networking event where 15 minute business coaching was provided. The “advice” Laura was given helped spur her career to much greater things (she shares the full story in this interview). If Laura is feeling down over receiving a NO, or hearing awful feedback, she takes some time to reflect on the fact that we all have insecurities and that these insecurities don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Laura firmly believes that you do not need to be more experienced or have more success under your belt before you start taking major leaps in your business. Laura shares how she attended an event that was meant for businesses making $10 million or more in revenue, and Meet Edgar was only at $5 Million in revenue. If you’re ever trying to attend a conference, Laura suggests trying to pitch yourself as a speaker. The event may say NO, or they could say YES. You don’t know without asking. “Entrepreneurs get the idea that rules don’t apply to us, because we start to see that so many of the limitations that people perceive are not real.” ~ Laura Roeder Laura says that she’s never been intimidated by people older than her or of those in power. She always thinks, “What’s the worst that could happen?” “Ask for forgiveness, not permission.” ~ Laura Roder Laura’s most accomplished NO occurred recently when she was out trying to find investors for her new company, Ropig. She’d never done this before because she bootstrapped Meet Edgar. Laura was so intimidated by the whole fund raising process that she put all of her eggs in one basket with only one investor. You’ll have to listen to learn how it turned out! Laura shares how she managed to come up with $350,000 in just 30 days! No matter what you’re working on, Laura believes that you must give everything your all, within your own constraints. Laura started as a freelance web designer but began to struggle to understand how she was going to keep growing her company when her plate was already so full. Laura shares how she had to say good-bye to her clients and start taking her business in a different direction. They’re competition-ready and they’re designed from fabrics that breathe.   This episode, Laura and Elise speak about how Laura successfully designs riding attire that is beautiful, comfortable, and showring approved; what led her to start up her own company at the age of 25; what a typical day of balancing both riding and designing looks like; the gratifying experience of receiving feedback from "real" riders; and about her own, unique connections to her horses of a lifetime!   Topics of Discussion: [:45] About Elise’s guest today, Laura Romfh. Today, we have Laura Steward on the show. She's going to be talking about her journey and her story is really amazing!    Laura is a sought after Business Strategist, Keynote Speaker, Radio Host and Author. She started  Wisdom Learned LLC, a company which is dedicated to educating leaders, based on experience and wisdom, after first building and then selling her highly successful Technology Services Company, which she started after being offered a package to leave her corporate job with a Fortune 100 Company.     Laura has tons of certifications, as well as a Computer Science Degree,  a Technical Writing Degree and a Masters Degree.    Laura is the author of a Novice Award winning, number one International Best Selling book, called What Would A Wise Woman Do? - Questions To Ask Along The Way, which was on the Amazon Woman In Business Best Seller List for over ninety straight weeks at launch and continues to hit best seller lists across the world.     Through her weekly broadcast radio show, It's All About The Questions and her keynote speeches, books, seminars, training and one-on-one sessions, Laura's mission is crystal clear- it's to help people get off auto-pilot and create amazing, successful lives.    Show highlights:   Laura had zero limiting beliefs about selling, when she first started her Tech Services Company.  She brought in six figures within the first year and never looked back from there. After she sold her company, however, she had massive limiting beliefs. She had let all her employees go, as things weren't working out and she found herself in a void, not knowing where she was headed. She then realized that she actually had so much business booked, that she had to pick herself up. So she made some calls and got a really fantastic response from many people, all willing to help her to service her clients! So, her business took off again and from that point on, her income doubled!  That really gave her a chance to rethink how she was doing business. This was when she decided to sell. She was offered way less than she thought the company to be worth and she then realized that this was because she no longer had any recurring revenues, or contracts.     When she restarted her business from the ground up again, it transformed the business, the values and the  revenues  to the company. She eventually sold the company after fifteen years and many different partners.  When Laura started a new company, however, she thought that she lacked the technical degrees, to allow her to consult and work with other companies to grow their businesses. This really was not true- it was just a massive limiting belief- and this prevented her from generating any revenue at all. Even her highly successful book did not turn this belief around for her. It took a number of years for her to fully integrate that she had actually run a highly successful business, with a seven figure revenue. That, her Masters Degree and her lessons learned from the school of hard knocks, finally became clear to her. She realized that her number one limiting belief was due to Imposter Syndrome. Laura realized that she had been consulting with CEO's of Fortune 10 Companies, being the Technical Support for corporations, when she ran her Tech Company. What set her company apart from the average Tech Company, was that they were business focused, so she would design technology around the goals and aspirations of the businesses that she was working with, so she had to work around business blocks that these businesses were having and this helped to realize the skills that she really had. This broke her limiting beliefs and clients suddenly started coming on board. Laura has been caring for her mom, who suffers from Dementia and Heart Failure, for the past five years- and she got divorced during this time too. She started looking around, at what she loved and how she could best help others, after all that she's been through emotionally and with her business and this, together with the true friends that she has, started a positive shift within her. A friend suggested that Laura would make a great Radio Show Host. She tried it and loved it! Her own Radio Show was a big turning point for her- with that, she could make a difference by being herself! Laura has learned to trust herself, over the years. She's also learned that she needs to define what both success and failure mean for her. She's had to ask herself 'why' and work out whether her limiting beliefs are actually her own, or whether they possibly come from someone else, or from the 'collective of the world'. Cleaning house, both internally and with the people that Laura surrounds herself with, and  serving people to the level that they want to keep coming back (recurring revenue), are the two strategies that have really helped her to double her sales. The biggest thing that Laura teaches her clients, is how to look at their why- in other words, to question their own motivation for doing what they do. She uses an exercise that she calls 'The Five Why's'. She also helps her clients to look outside of their picture frame.   Laura's book, What Would A Wise Woman Do? Questions To Ask Along The Way, is available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or from Independent Book Stores.    Laura is offering you, the listener, a free 15 minute Consultation with her. #79: When Laura Roeder was 22, she quit her job to become a full-time freelancer. She earned $30,000 in her first year as a freelancer; $60,000 in her second year. Ten years later -- (Laura is now 32) -- her company earns $4 million in annual revenue. (Can I repeat that? Did I bury the lede? *Laura went from making $30,000 per year to owning 100% of a company that earns $4 million per year.* And she did this within a decade. Oh, and she also had a baby.) (Like, whoa.) Laura is the founder and CEO of a software company called Edgar, which provides social media automation for entrepreneurs and small businesses. In this interview, I ask Laura (sophisticated) questions such as "How the f**k did you make the leap from freelancer to multi-million-dollar company owner?" Here are some of the insights that she shares: #1: You have nothing to lose. When Laura quit her job, she conquered her fears by reminding herself: "Hey, worst-case-scenario, I work an hourly retail job for awhile if I can't find any clients." Sure, that might suck. But is the worst-case-scenario *so bad* that it's a deal-breaker? When Laura realized that the worst-case-scenario was something that she could live with, she proceeded full-speed ahead. #2: Cut the cord. When Laura transitioned from freelancing to consulting (her intermediate step before starting Edgar), she knew that if she maintained her client base, she wouldn't be motivated to grow her consulting business. So she cut the cord. She dropped all of her clients, including one extremely lucrative contract, in order to motivate herself. #3: Look for what's next. Laura's transition follows a sensible narrative arc: employee, freelancer, consultant, software company founder. Each step led to the next opportunity. Freelancing turned into consulting, which turned into a kernel of an idea for a software  company. She couldn't have predicted, at age 22, where she'd be in 10 years. She simply proceeded one step at a time. ____ Listen to Laura describe her story -- and share advice for people who want to start companies and/or work remotely -- in today's episode.

Transform Civil Discourse Using a 3 Letter Word, with Laura Huffman

Leaders, Bosses and Bastards

You may not use the word “civil discourse” in daily conversation much but you engage in it all the time. It’s the act of talking with others with a goal of attaining understanding. Isn’t that what all of us want from our conversations? The ironic thing is that we often sabotage understanding by injecting the conversation with limiting terms that we don’t realize are coming out of our mouths.  On this episode of Leaders, Bosses, and Bastards Mickey Connolly is chatting with his friend Laura Huffman about the importance of truly civil discourse, why we need to revive the idea in our day and age, and how one three letter word can change the dynamic of our conversations in amazing ways.   Civil discourse is often destroyed by the use of the wrong conjunction.   Laura Huffman explains how conversations go from constructive to destructive with the use of one little conjunction, the word “or.” It’s a word that automatically forces a choice, a decision about one thing over another and as Laura points out, the world simply doesn’t work that way all the time. If you want to learn how to become mindful of a very simple but powerful way you can change the tone and direction of the conversations you have, this episode is for you.   Why force someone to choose when they really don’t have to?   Some people use polarization as their stock in trade. Cable News talk show hosts or reporters, for example. Their job is to magnify the tension in a situation to create a sense of sensationalism that lures in viewers or readers. But that same approach applied in daily life or in the culture of an organization is never helpful. Laura Huffman explains why polarization happens, the mindsets behind it, and the cultural falsehoods that convince us that we should speak in polarizing terms on this episode of Leaders, Bosses, and Bastards. I hope you take the time to listen.   Isn’t civil discourse supposed to actually BE civil?   There are many things that can escalate a conversation from a calm discussion of the facts and outcomes of a situation to a heated debate or disagreement. One of those things is the use of the word “or” instead of the word “and.” In this conversation, Laura Huffman gives quite a few examples of how the use of the word “or” in conversation forces people into a place of choosing when in fact it doesn’t have to be an either/or situation. When Laura opens your eyes to how toxic the practice can be and how often you insert the word “or” into conversations yourself, you’ll be eager to modify the way you approach conversations moving forward. I know I was.   Is it possible to change the tone of civil discourse in the 21st century?   People like Laura Huffman encourage me, simply because of their optimism. Laura is one of those people who believes that human beings thrive on solving problems more than making them. And she believes that the direction our culture has gone when it comes to personal interactions - toward sensationalism rather than fact-based problem solving - is something we must collectively address and learn to improve. She believes that as we begin to notice the small but significant things that downgrade the quality of civil discourse we can begin to make course corrections that will serve our society better and produce long-lasting fruit.   Outline of This Episode [1:19] My introduction of my friend, Laura Huffman. [2:23] Laura’s concern about the state of Civil Discourse and the power of “Or” and “And.” [7:16] How people get trapped in the “And/Or” choices. [9:00] Changing the and/or nature of our thinking can impact every area of life and business. [18:10] How using “and” can change the nature of interactions from can’t-do, to can-do conversations. This episode's guest has made a living from listening to these voices and helping people to communicate with spirits. When Laura first reached out to me, I was so drawn to her work. Honestly, I think everyone I know has a ghost story or two, so naturally, I had to ask about how she realized she had this skill and then more importantly when she realized the value in it - Laura's answer blew me away. Laura had known she had the ability to connect with spirits from an early age, but she feared the criticism that would come along with sharing her gift (something I think many of us relate to). Over the course of her career, she held numerous jobs, but she always felt like she had a greater calling and shortly after the financial collapse of 2008, she took action and has never looked back. Laura Powers quickly rose to the top in her field in Lafayette, Colorado to Denver, Colorado, finally becoming one of the top in her field in Los Angeles in a matter of three years. After working for a branding company as a junior designer for a brief stint at age 22, Laura decided she wanted more interaction with clients and more control over her work. She left her first job out of college at less than a year in and has been working for herself ever since! Laura started LKR Social Media to help entrepreneurs learn how to use social media in their businesses. Laura helps people become “famous in their field” and learn how to be the go-to expert in what they do.   The Solution to the Social Media Time Suck In her work with social media students, Laura was using spreadsheets  to organize their content and sharing strategy online. She used this same method for promoting her own business. The spreadsheets were very labor intensive and, essentially, organized old content and kept track of when things were posted to various social media apps. After using this method for some time, Laura realized that there had to be a better way. It was very odd to her that social media scheduling apps were not creating a library of old posts and doing the hard part for her. Laura began discussing this issue and her frustrations with her husband.  He said that he could build a solution for her in a week! Laura's husband did, in fact, build this software (it took 6 months!) so business owners can re-purpose their content and updates easily to take advantage of all the hard work they put into those initial posts.  The software is called Edgar, and he's an adorable octopus (because of course!)  You can find him at MeetEdgar.com Why Re-purpose Content? One of the most time consuming things entrepreneurs do each day is create new content to share. This is so important because business owners need to consistently bring in new potential customers. However, when you do have a new potential lead, they only see the new things that you are posting and creating. Most of the time they never see the podcasts or blog posts that you shared six or more months ago.  What a bummer! You spent a lot of time creating that great stuff! With Edgar, you have a library of all your great content that is still relevant but is being shared over and over again so that your new audience is seeing it. Most people spend hours creating new content and then just share it once. 90% of their audience never sees it! By re-purposing older content, business owners can make sure that their growing audience is able to see more of what they have to offer. Most business owners see traffic spikes when they write and share a new post.  Then things begin to die down. With Edgar, a business owner sees regular traffic spikes by drawing fans and followers back onto their site time and time again. Meet Edgar. He Loves Bringing You More Traffic. Laura constantly hears from users that they see huge increases in their traffic after using Edgar. Logically, this phenomenon makes sense.  If you share a link on social media, it gets a certain amount of traffic. If you share that link twice, it should bring in twice the traffic, right? The math holds up. If you develop a backlog with 3 or 6 months' worth of content, your audience is not at all fatigued by seeing the same thing over and over again.  They're only seeing it a few times a year.  Laura has also noticed that updates have similar results every time they are shared. For example if an update gets 10 retweets the first time it is shared, if it's shared again a month later it's likely to see 10 retweets the second time as well. How to Spread out your Content Laura recommends that you space out the reposting of your content based on how much content you have. For example, if you have a month of great content to share, then you should recycle those posts about once a month. At MeetEdgar, they share repeat content roughly every 3 months. The best part? Edgar doesn’t just save your blog posts it also saves your entire social media post including the image that you put so much time into. You won't have to hunt for the perfect-sized image from the caverns of your computer again.  It's all ready to go and simply schedule out. Time-Saving Tips When you create your posts, you can batch your work to save time. Create all of your blog posts at once, then create all of your images. This will save you hours of work! Automate your social media updates. Your audience doesn’t know how you are sending out your content, so automate it to save time. Engagement and interaction, however, cannot be done with a scheduling app. So in your social media strategy spend time engaging yourself. You can get to know your audience and interact with them with the time you save by planning and scheduling posts ahead of time. Building a Software Company Laura had never built a software company before but she realized this shouldn’t stop her. "Just because you haven't done it before doesn't mean you can't do it," she says. As moms, we understand that babies don't enter the world knowing how to use Ruby on Rails.  We all have to learn.  We all start from scratch at some point. Laura also stresses the importance of having a great partner or co-founder to help you build out your idea. If you outsource the development of your software, this is  Instead you want someone that is part of your team and invested in your success. Another important part of building an app or software platform is to have some sales and marketing knowledge (whether that is you or someone you hire). Laura has seen a lot of developers create great things but because they don’t know how to get it out into the world, it fails. The best type of partnership would be one person who knows the marketing side and one person who can do the technical side of things. Marketing Edgar Laura has used two key strategies to gain new customers for Edgar. Facebook Ads. Facebook ads have been huge for Edgar. Laura has noticed that a lot of new businesses are nervous about jumping into paid advertising, but with Facebook ads you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get your product in front of the perfect audience. It takes some time and experimentation, but the payoff is huge.  Experiment with $10-$100, and then once you see what works, you can ramp up your ad spend as the sales roll in. Branding. Laura and her team have focused a great deal on branding Edgar. He has become his own little creature with a personality! Edgar is a boy.  He's an octopus who loves to help you with your social media, and he has some weird hobbies.  Happy customers started saying, "Edgar is my boyfriend" and they thought it was so cute that they made stickers and messaging around that idea. It's much easier to picture how a piece of software fits into your life when you can imagine it as a helpful little creature. Creating the Creature Edgar was originally just the code name for the overall project. When the team sat down to name the program, they realized that Edgar was memorable, cute, and they couldn't think of anything better! So Edgar it was. After landing on the name Edgar, Laura and her team knew that if it was going to have a person’s name, it would need a personality as well. An octopus seemed like the perfect fit because Edgar does so much and is juggling so many different things at once. Edgar's vibrant personality has grown from there! Facebook Ads Made Easy While there are tons of different strategies a business owner can use with Facebook ads, it doesn't always have to be so complicated.  In creating Facebook ads for Edgar, Laura was very straightforward. She marketed to people with an interest in managing their social media professionally, and the message behind the ads was simple: “here is a new social media tool, check him out!” Laura knows her target market well, and she knows they're always looking for ways to streamline their social media efforts. Customer Acquisition Cost In Laura's opinion, many entrepreneurs do the math wrong when it comes to determining how much they can pay to acquire each customer. Many business owners look at the lifetime value of a customer.  In other words, how much will the business make from that one customer over the lifetime of that business. Unfortunately this strategy is unrealistic for a small bootstrapped company. Instead, Laura recommends setting a limit on your cost per customer acquisition based on how long you are willing to be “out” that money. For Edgar the limit was set at 3 months. Even though many customers stay with Edgar much longer than 3 months, they knew they could afford to be out the money from their ad spend for 3 months' time before they needed to start turning a profit on that customer. Edgar costs $49/month, so the Laura can spend roughly $150 to acquire each customer and still turn a profit on that customer relatively quickly. That number may seem steep, but the math works out great for a company like Laura's, and it's allowed her to grow Edgar to over $100,000 in recurring monthly revenue.  Also, remember that the cost per customer acquisition is much different than the cost per lead.  Not all leads turn into customers.  But do the math. What percentage of your leads turn into customers? How much did you pay for all of those leads? Find the right market to target and the right cost per customer acquisition, and paid advertising doesn't have to be quite so scary. Why Laura Turned Down Funding Edgar was offered various funding options, but Laura turned them all down, and she's so glad she did! Here are a few reasons why Laura turned down funding: No bosses.  When you raise funding you have people on your board that you need to please.  You're accountable to more than just yourself, and these people also have voting rights to decide on the direction of the company. No fundraising. Start-ups that receive funding often get into a trap of raising funds, then having pressure to grow really quickly, then they have to raise funds again.  Oftentimes they run into the trap of not working to acquire more customers, but instead working to acquire more investors. Laura didn't want to spend all her time looking for money from investors.  She wants to spend her time making her product worth it for each customer. No pressure to sell.  Laura didn't want to pour her heart and soul into something and then feel pressured to sell it (so that investors all make a nice profit!) She wanted to focus her energy on creating a company that treats its employees well, is loved by its customers, and is profitable in the near future instead of just on sales day. Edgar's Arms Edgar actually has more than 8 arms, he has 15!  There are 15 wonderful employees on the Edgar Team, and they all work from home. Laura's best tip for managing a remote team: Look for employees with specific skills and talents instead of hiring virtual assistants. Often, VAs are running their own business, and that is their main priority.  They're spending time acquiring new clients and hiring more staff. But an employee is part of your team, and everyone is working towards the same goal of making your business successful. Don't underestimate the power of moms: The woman who heads up Edgar's customer service team is a mom of three kids.  This woman used to work in telemarketing, because it was the only job she could find that was flexible and allowed her to work from home.  She started part-time with Edgar, then grew to full-time, and now she manages the entire customer service department!  She has incredible talent, and it wasn't being utilized all that much in her previous job.  Laura loves seeking out brilliant moms who can contribute to the Edgar Team. Wearing Pajamas Doesn't Make you Qualified When hiring for a work-at-home job, it can be tricky to find just the right fit.  Here are Laura's tips for assembling a great team. Mission over Lifestyle.  Really wanting to work at home does not make you qualified!  Laura looks for candidates who really believe in Edgar's mission and feel they can add to it in valuable ways. Skill + Experience. Asking the right questions and looking at candidates' past experience can help you determine whether they have the right skills for the job.  Again, this isn't about finding a random mom who just wants a typing job from home.  Laura hires brilliant people who have experience in the areas she's hiring for but also enjoy the flexibility of working from home. Create a Great Company Culture. Edgar prides itself on treating its employees well.  Everyone is kind.  Everyone works hard.  There is no workplace drama.  And the CEO happens to be flexible!  As Laura says, "We make social media software. We're not saving lives." They work hard and believe in what they're doing, but they also believe in putting in an honest day's work and taking time off in the evenings and on the weekends.  There's no reason a new feature launch can't be pushed back.  They do what's best for their team. This great company culture not only attracts the right employees but encourages them to stick around.  Everyone feels empowered to do a great job and enjoys working together.  Everyone pulls their weight  and is great at what they do. Create Part-Time Positions.  Edgar actually finds better candidates because they're more flexible with hours.  A mom who can't use her amazing talent at a full-time job can come work for them! Edgar also needs employees to have different shifts so that they can provide excellent customer service during all the hours their customers need them. We Didn't Miss You when You were Gone Ok, so that's not exactly true, but we should note that Laura is so brilliant at business that she built a team and created systems so that the business did great without her!  When Laura had her son, Hector, she took 3 full months off from work.  Even now, Laura works just 4 hours per day and spends the rest of her time with her family. When Laura came back from maternity leave, she was talking to Sarah who runs the day-to-day operations for the company and asked her, "where were the big gaps in my absence?" Sarah thought about it for a while and said, "well... we didn't have anyone to do podcasts...." We all chuckled at that one! So essentially, Laura's main role is to get the word out about Edgar and acquire new customers, and everything else runs pretty smoothly because Laura has assembled a great team and created an amazing company culture. Laura's Shocking and Hilarious Mom Moment Oh my goodness.  You'll want to stay tuned to the very end of our interview with Laura because her mom moment is...insane!  Hilarious, shocking, and unlike anything we've heard before. By the way, isn't Laura so fun?  I want to hang out with her and hear more of her hilarious stories! Find Laura Online MeetEdgar.com Connect with Laura on Twitter: @lkr
