The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Change is hard to create anywhere in the world. Getting things to change in Japan also has its own set of challenges. The typical expat leader, sent to Japan, notices some things that need changing. Usually the Japan part of the organisation is not really part of the organisation. It is sitting off to the side, like a distant moon orbiting the HQ back home. There are major differences around what is viewed as professional work. The things that are valued in Japan, like working loyally (i.e. long hours) even with low productivity, keeping quiet, not upsetting the applecart, not contributing in meetings, getting deep into the factional constructs of the organisation, are not seen as positive. Inefficiencies seem to beg for correction. Innovation seems to be a foreign concept in both senses of the word. Doing what we have always done, in the same way as we have always done it, has eliminated most of the opportunities for making mistakes, so why change anything? Doing things in a new way is inherently risky, because there is no reliable road map. We are going to have come out of our comfort zone to do that and we might make a mistake – not appealing whatsoever to the Japanese staff. Meritocracy is a given to the new expat leader and so personnel changes are a prime interest. People are where they are for many reasons and merit is not always the reason. Longevity, who entered the company first, who is your patron, always have a big determinant on whose who in the zoo in Japan. Talented people are supposed to keep in line and do what they are told. Showing too many smarts seems they are getting uppity before their betters and the hocho, that is the razor sharp Japanese knives, rapidly come out. The “nail” sticking out is about the get a good whack from everyone who can hit it hard. Nevertheless, ignorance is bliss, so our expat hero or heroine plunges in and starts shaking things up. Entrenched interests, who have created this current system to suit themselves, now feel threatened. They are not stoics. They make a very keen calculation. Can we outlast this clown, who is so rude, so ignorant about how to properly lead in Japan, so annoying and so dangerous to our vested interests. If the answer is “yes”, then a guerrilla war commences, where those most threatened band together to slow down progress, obfuscate the vital issues, hide key information, isolate out the new leaders pets to weaken them and look for petards on which to hoist the expat. If the answer is “no”, then it is a bare knuckle street fight. There are no rules. Classic weapons are looking for points of failure with new innovations to blow them up on purpose. Anyone close to the boss becomes a target internally and all sorts of societal pressure is brought to bear, to “turn them” into a spy for the “good guys” against this lunatic from outside. They are reminded that our hero won't be here forever and the rest of us will be. “We will get you. You are going to be toast when the boss heads to the airport for departure to the next foreign assignment. You aren't going anywhere sunshine, remember that”. Out of nowhere and nothing, headquarters starts to get anonymous communication about various crimes and misdemeanors that are pure fiction. Sexual harassment is a favourite, because they know Western companies are really sensitive to these types of allegations. Power harassment which was a preferred, traditional boss leadership technique, has now made it into the upper ranks of crimes, as this has become something flagged in Japanese society. Unsuitability for leadership in Japan. Ignorance of the market, clients, business practices, damage to the reputation of the firm locally are all trotted out to paint a dismal picture. The staff engagement survey for Japan is always the lowest score in the world and this shows what a miserable job our expat hero is doing. It is always the lowest in the world, but HQ isn't usually that smart or well informed enough to know that. HQ is demanding Japan's results improve, but are not happy to see any pushback when changes are introduced. The expat boss has to keep everything as it is, the exact same structure but produce greater results and they have to keep everyone happy about achieving that. The boss is on a hiding to nothing here. Welcome to Japan!

I'm an educated, professional woman who also considers herself well informed. It pains me to admit however that upon reconsideration, I am not as well-informed as I thought. Until recently, I believed that voting is a right, indeed a fundamental right. I'm embarrassed to admit I was wrong. As an American and an attorney, I am aware that at one time only white men were entitled to vote. In the 21st century, admittedly in my ignorance, and because we live in a democracy I believed that all Americans have the right to vote. I violated one of my cardinal rules, take nothing for granted. I took it for granted that people of color, women, and individuals who are 18 years old, all of whom do not have non-discriminatory legal grounds for withholding their voting privilege, would be entitled to vote. I knew about gerrymandering and redistricting, and enacting legislation and rules that imposed limitations on things like giving someone water while they were in line to vote. Silly me, I believed that unreasonable or discriminatory limitations would be struck down by courts. Unfortunately, the integrity of jurists and our courts at all levels have been tainted by the appearance of impropriety and bias. A 2019 article by the Carnegie Corporation of New York notes that “[c]hallenges to voting rights in this country, like the ones we've seen recently, are hardly a 21st century invention. Entrenched groups have long tried to keep the vote out of the hands of the less powerful. That's it! It's about power. We all have it. If voting is important, and each individual's vote is particularly important, why is gerrymandering and redistricting be a “thing?” Why are there efforts to suppress voting? In a few short weeks, on November 5, 2024, Americans will have the privilege, if not the right to cast their ballot for the candidates of their choice, including President of the United States. Take the time to learn which candidates advocate policies that will serve you. Do you want to raise a family or start a business? Do you have healthcare coverage now? Is there a chance that it will go away? Do you have benefits that were bargained for by a union? Do you live in a state that may need federal assistance if there is a disaster? A hurricane, fire or other natural disaster. Don't listen to the uninformed. Go to reliable websites that set forth each candidate's position, then vote your interest. I interviewed my long-time friend Wade Henderson, former CEO and President of the Leadership Conference of Civil and Human Rights. Please treat yourself and listen to that podcast. His interview, Understanding the Civil Rights Movement” was posted on September 28, 2020, and is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and my website, Your Employment Matters. As a young man, Wade experienced an act of discrimination that solidified his commitment and mindset and directed his path forward. Others may have become embittered and checked out by not voting or otherwise not disengaging. By comparison, Wade devoted his life's work in service to promoting civil rights and human rights. Please take a page from Wade Henderson's playbook. If life gives you lemons, use those lemons to make lemonade or another beverage, meal or dessert of your choice. Take the bitterness out of life and move forward with purpose. Never take anything, especially hard-fought rights or privileges, for granted. You only have them until someone takes them away from you. Be vigilant. Remain informed, usually by accessing reliable sources. If you're unsure, view several different media outlets that offer different views and accounts. Remember that facts should be accurate. Interpretation of facts is opinion. In the words of former Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (Dem.NY)— 'You are entitled to your opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts. Learn more about your ad choices. A block in the system is said to be forcing some people in Clare to become "entrenched" in homeless accommodation for years. The number of adults in this county availing of emergency accommodation rose to 75 at the end of July - while the number of homeless children across Clare and Limerick has increased to 191. Nationally, Department of Housing figures show a record 14,429 people are now accessing State-provided homeless accommodation. Head of Advocacy and Communications at homeless charity Novas, Una Burns, says while a period of six months or more in emergency accommodation was once considered "long-term", this is no longer the case.

My guest today is Dr. Susan Blum. Susan Blum is Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame. She is the author of I Love Learning; I Hate School and My Word!, as well as the editor of Ungrading. Her new book, Schoolishness: Alienated Education, and the Quest for Authentic, Joyful Learning is now out on Cornell University Press. It catalogs in great detail the characteristics of a “schoolish” education, that is, school as a self-contained institution with its own logic, grammar, and rules. One that, ultimately, sets students up for difficult re-entry into the rest of their lives in an unschoolish world. Susan draws upon examples of unschoolish learning from around the world and makes a powerful case for a necessary anthropological perspective that makes the familiar strange and the strange familiar.“If we don't try, nothing will change,” she writes, “It's hard. Hell, it's probably impossible. Schoolishness is probably here to stay, but maybe not all of its elements are inevitable. Entrenched, yes. But inevitable? I don't think so.”Editor's Note: Susan would like to add a quick correction that her current DuoLingo streak is over 1,100 not 11,000. :)Susan Blum's WebsiteWorks mentioned this episode:Susan Hrach - Minding Bodies: How Physical Space, Sensation, and Movement Affect LearningDavid Lancy - The Anthropology of ChildhoodEdwin Hutchins - Cognition in the Wild Hosted on Acast. Lowenstein Sandler's Insurance Recovery Podcast: Don’t Take No For An Answer
Today on “Don't Take No for an Answer,” hosts Lynda A, Bennett and Eric Jesse discuss what they see as an increase in insurers acting in bad faith trying to avoid their coverage obligations, with more roadblocks, more requests for perfect information, and more entrenched positions than ever before, and insurers trying to abandon their insureds even when there is a meaningful settlement opportunity to resolve the underlying case. They explain the covenant of good faith and fair dealing, the importance of choice of law, and how policyholders can protect themselves, particularly regarding the appointment and management of panel defense counsel, and in determining who has the ultimate authority to settle a case.
