Eddie served as the Editor in Chief of Car & Driver for 10 years, and now finds himself leading automotive editorial for Hearst, overseeing properties like Car & Driver, Road & Track, Motortrend, Hot Rod, Autoweek, and a personal favorite, Bring A Trailer. There is a surprising amount of overlap between how we think about cars and watches of a certain era, which has defined our enthusiasm for both, and we get into just why that is in this episode. Show Notes:Hearst AutosEp. 60 with James Stacey recapping our trip to Paris with Richard MilleIWC 3706Toyota MkIV SupraBest Motoring Three Lap Battle around Tsukuba CircuitA Brief History of the Porsche 911R Gruppe PorscheSlateHonda AccordValentino RossiEp. 50 with Justin BellWalter RöhrlSupport the show

The earliest cars were nothing more than horse buggies with motors (the first Oldsmobile was a horseless carriage with a one-cylinder engine plunked in). But once sturdier cars were invented and mass production made them cheap, the 20th century was forever defined by the automobile. It was the first industry to use the assembly line. People had unimaginable levels of freedom and mobility. Whole new industries and services sprang up, including motels, amusement parks, restaurant franchises, and fast food. Today's guest is Eddie Alterman, host of the new podcast Car Show. He thinks all cars are great - even the awful ones (such as the Pontiac Aztek). But some cars, he says, transcend their "car-ness." Some cars have a story to tell us because changed how we drive and live, whose significance lies outside the scope of horsepower or miles per gallon. Such models include the Model T, Porsche 911, and even the Lunar Rover. Because some cars are more than just a pile of metal, glass, and rubber. Some cars are rolling anthropology.

Hi. It's Mike Musto, your host, and I'm here to tell you that this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ was a hell of a lot of fun. It all started with Hemmings own Mike Austin (and this episode's co-host) suggesting that we bring on Eddie Alterman, the Chief Brand Officer for Hearst Autos. As an accomplished journalist, Eddie's words on everything from new cars to vintage Porsches have helped us understand what's going on in the crazy four-wheeled world that we live in, and as an automotive O.G., his wisdom on car culture helps us to understand where the future of transportation may be headed. What's even better is that this is just a great conversation between three cars guys who touch on everything from how they got their starts in this industry, to how the automotive landscape is so rapidly changing. I hope you enjoy this one, because I know we did… Cheers - Mike

Jon, Randall and Eddie discuss the future of The BIG 3 and everything auto! Born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Eddie Alterman grew up around, in, and under automobiles. He learned to drive at the age of 10 behind the wheel of his father’s 1962 Porsche 356B. In 1991, Alterman’s passion for cars led him to the door of Automobile Magazine where, between classes at the University of Michigan, he maintained the magazine’s fleet of test cars. He went on to hold various positions there (with a side gig as columnist for Men’s Journal), before leaving the magazine in 2004. In that year, Alterman started MPH. Billed as the anti-car-magazine, MPH combined the irreverence of Spy with the offbeat storytelling of a 1960s-era Car and Driver. Results were mixed. MPH folded two years later, but not before many, many traffic laws had been violated. After MPH, Alterman took back up with Men’s Journal and launched an automotive-lifestyle website, motivemag.com, while contributing to the New York Times. In 2009, Alterman was named editor-in-chief of Hearst Magazines’ Car and Driver, the world’s largest automotive publication. There, he expanded the brand’s digital, commercial, and experiential offerings while reinvigorating the printed magazine. In 2015, he assumed the additional responsibility of editorial oversight for Road & Track. In 2019, Alterman was named Chief Brand Officer for Hearst Autos; in this role, he helps to shape the editorial and business strategies for Hearst’s automotive brands, including Car and Driver, Road & Track, Bring a Trailer, and AutoWeek. It's time to put the brakes on the hype about self-driving cars. Despite industry and media forecasts, it may be more than a decade before many fully autonomous vehicles are on the road. Lawsuits and patent disputes are among the many hurdles that face auto manufacturers and tech firms. But this doesn't mean that technology is being thrown into reverse gear. Semi-autonomous cars with vehicle assist and other features are much safer than earlier generations of automobiles. Self-driving delivery trucks and vans are no longer a fantasy. "Fix It" guest Eddie Alterman, Editor-in-Chief of Car and Driver magazine is deeply skeptical about the widely-touted changes proclaimed by major manufacturers. "It's a scary concept anyway you look at it," he tells us. "The autonomous car is a very inelegant, very complex and a very fraught solution to the problem of texting while driving... and of information coming into the car when people should be driving."For Google, Apple, Microsoft and other big data companies, autonomous cars are a big opportunity. Instead of keeping their eyes on the road, motorists would use their driving time to consume more digital media. But Eddie says a mix of self-driving and traditional vehicles on the road would create danger. "People will deal with or accept flawed humans crashing into each other. I don't think people will accept supposedly fail-safe machines crashing into each other." See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In fact, there are so many new vehicles being released by manufacturers each year it comes out to almost one per week. That makes it tough for auto reporters who need to drive and evaluate each one of them and then get the word out to their readers, listeners or viewers.Well tough or not, John McElroy was able to convince two of his North American Car & Truck of the Year judges him to join him on this week’s Autoline to talk the latest in vehicles. NACTOY's New Day? Since 1994, the first awarding of the North American Car of the Year, there has been a parade each year of three finalists with one winner. Amid the 48 contenders and 16 eventual winners with their sleek designs and top-notch engineering there's been only one car that many observers considered a gateway to the 21st Century, and that was the Toyota Prius Hybrid. Well, it may be 11 years later but welcome to the 21st Century. This year the more than 50 jurors of the North American Car of the Year chose not just one but two ground-breaking finalists by adding both the Chevy Volt plug-in and Nissan's Electric LEAF to its final three. But let's not forget the third member of the COY finalists, Hyundai's hot-selling Sonata, with its more standard internal combustion engine which received review after glowing review throughout 2010. On this week's Autoline, NACTOY founding member John McElroy is joined by two of his fellow jurors, Eddie Alterman from Car & Driver and Marty Padgett from High Gear Media, as they discuss all three finalists, what they mean to the auto industry and who they each believe will be the 2011 North American Car of the Year.

Platforms Like many other areas of 21st century life, the publishing world is in an upheaval. Newspapers are consolidating and closing while books are turning into digital devices and music virtually floats around the Internet for free. Yet perhaps the sector with the most on the line is the magazine; those recurrent glossy periodicals that cater to our every interest, taste and whim. The problem is that the magazine audience is getting a little long in the tooth -- to put it mildly -- yielding decreasing sales across the board. And no place is that more evident than with the automotive enthusiast magazine crowd. From Automobile to Car and Driver to Motor Trend to Road & Track, no matter the name, no matter the content, everyone is losing out to the Internet. So the multi-million dollar question is how can these grand old dames of the enthusiast set transfer the magazine experience to a new generation -- one that doesn't so much read information as it does devour it. Well, one answer may be platforms. Creating unique content specifically for a digital device. Of course that's easier said that done because then you still have to have an audience who buys it. Joining John McElroy to discuss the short and long term future of the automotive enthusiast magazines is a panel who knows the issues first hand. Csaba Csere worked for Car and Driver magazine for nearly three decades leaving as Editor-in-Chief in 2008. Eddie Alterman is charged with facing those challenges today as the current Editor-in- Chief of Car and Driver while John Neff and his popular website, Autoblog.com, is just one of the reasons that the enthusiast crowd is looking for new workable options like platforms.
