After another four-week break, the run-in for the 2024 Formula One World Championship starts this weekend with Round 19 - The United States Grand Prix from Austin, Texas. Alex Kalinauckas and Ben Hunt join Bryn Lucas from the Autosport Podcast studio and together they catch up on all the autumnal news before previewing the race itself. Last week we found out that Haas and Toyota have formed a new technical partnership, the Japanese manufacturers' first presence in the sport since 2009 as they "share resources" with the American-British team. Alex goes into detail as to what the relationship entails, and whether it's the first step for a full-bodied return for Toyota. There's also a discussion on Alpine's future in the sport as the French team confirmed they'll be ceasing to build F1 power units when the regulations change in 2026 and whether Mick Schumacher is a late contender for what could be 2025's final remaining seat at Sauber. And of course, there's a preview on COTA, with a newly repaved surface set to benefit a rejuvenated Red Bull, amidst claims the Milton Keynes team could be back on form, with an upgrade package set to be used in Austin, and why their rivals at McLaren are reluctant to do the same. And how will COTA handle their track limits after their 2023 controversy and Haas's "right to review"? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Today marks the 50th Anniversary of one of McLaren's greatest achievements. In 1974, they became the second manufacturer in history to win the Formula One World Championship and the Indianapolis 500 in the same year. Motorsport legends Emerson Fittpaldi won the F1 World Title in the McLaren M23, and Johnny Rutherford won the Indy 500 with the McLaren M16, two cars with very similar design concepts that stood the test of time. To mark the occasion, Autosport's Chief Editor Kevin Turner made the trip out to Pembrey in North Wales to have the McLaren Heritage Program fire up both cars together for the first time, and on this edition of the Autosport Podcast, he and Dre Harrison chat about what made McLaren's double so special. From the intertwined development path that both cars took, the dramatic rise of speeds in Indianapolis in the early 1970s, to how Fittipaldi triumphed in '74 as both he and Clay Regazzoni entered the final round of the Championship tied on points, something that's only happened twice in F1 history, Dre and Kev talk about the enduring legacy of McLaren's legendary double. Round 16 of the Formula One World Championship took us to the Autodromo Nazionale Monza for the Italian Grand Prix, the home of the Tifosi and a race in which everyone roots for Ferrari. It didn't seem as it would be the day for the boys in scarlet red as the McLaren's were once again dominant, locking out the front row and controlling most of the race, but one strategical error was all it took from the pitwall, with the team bringing in both drivers for a two stop and Leclerc opting to hang it out on an old set of hards to make it to the end just 2.6 seconds ahead of Piastri. Pure euphoria. Elsewhere around the paddock, we saw the rewards of a large upgrade package for Ferrari, Antonelli was officially signed to Mercedes for 2025 onward, and F2 rookie Franco Colapinto replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams for the remainder of the season. The rookie sprint at Abu Dhabi is now in planning, Alpine employees came out to protest Renault's desire to draw back on their engine development and Bottas may be staying with Sauber for another year. A fantastic Italian GP left us ready for more and we can't wait for Baku in 2 weeks time. Thanks as always for stopping out On the Gravel with us!

Round 15 of the Formula One World Championship took us to the Circuit Zandvoort in the Netherlands for the Dutch Grand Prix, a race that has only been won by Max Verstappen since its reintroduction to the sport in 2021. However it was not to be the Dutchman's day at home, with Norris taking a convincing pole and victory to fully stamp McLaren's authority and ambitions on the main stage. Could Lando still be in contention for the WDC? Around the paddock it was a light week with Helmut Marko all but confirming Lawson will be in a Red Bull or VCARB next year, Max has stated he's in the latter half of his career already, and Liberty Media is selling a 630,000 Euro stake of the company to fund the recent MotoGP acquisition. On top of this, the Uralkali/Haas drama resurfaced to all new levels this weekend, plenty of upgrades over the summer break were discussed, and Sargeant's seat is truly in jeopardy after his massive crash in FP3. A very light week of racing to bring us back to speed, something that we will see the pinnacle of next week at Monza for the Italian GP, and we hope to see you there On The Gravel!

Round 14 of the Formula One World Championship took us to the Circuit de Spa Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix with another slow burn with the inclusion of a shocking twist after the race. A masterclass in strategy from George Russell and Mercedes saw the Brit go on a one-stopper and whisper his hard tires for over 30 laps to hold off the charge of teammate Lewis Hamilton and the McLaren of Oscar Piastri right to the flag. It wasn't to be however, with Russell suffering a post race DSQ as his Mercedes was found to be underweight, promoting Hamilton to his 2nd win in the last 3 races. Elsewhere around the paddock, Alpine ran a special Deadpool livery around Spa and are debating moving to Mercedes power, Alonso came out criticizing the FIA once again, and the internet was outraged at Max Verstappen's sim racing sleep schedule. Mattia Binotto has officially joined the Audi F1 project, the points system will not be changed, and Ocon officially signed with Haas. Formula 2 coverage wrapped up a great week On The Gravel as we head into the summer break and some quality time off before the Dutch GP at the end of August. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

A 2021 style collision between Verstappen and Hamilton topped off a fine weekend out in Budapest that now puts us at 7 winners in 13 races. Elsewhere around the paddock, Audi are taking BP as their fuel supplier, Kevin Magnussen announced his departure from Haas and Esteban Ocon received his 2021 Hungarian GP race winning car. Yuki Tsunoda has potential for a Red Bull promotion in 2025, the 2026 regulations have gotten even worse, and our famous friends from The Grand Tour have disbanded after decades together on television. McLaren vs Mercedes, changeable conditions, a 5 car battle for the win, and Lewis Hamilton's first win in two and a half years coming at his home race. 6 different winners in the first 12 races of the year says it all. Round 11 of the Formula One World Championship took us to the Red Bull Ring for the Austrian Grand Prix. It was a pretty routine weekend, with track limits stealing the show as they typically do in the Styrian hills, along with a fight for the win between the classic pair of Norris and Verstappen that hit its first boiling point this season. With just a handful of laps to go, an over aggressive defense from Max caused contact, punctures, and the front running pair to slide down the order, allowing George Russell to swoop through and take only his second career win. Elsewhere around the paddock, the FIA's super license rules have officially changed, Aston Martin has hired further Ferrari staff, and Austria improved its AI track limits detection system. Stroll and Gasly extended with their respective teams, Helmut Marko has hinted that Ricciardo's end and Lawson's return may be here very soon, and the Jos Verstappen/Christian Horner dumpster fire took another funny turn this weekend. Round 10 of the Formula One World Championship brought us to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the Spanish Grand Prix. It was a superb Saturday for Lando Norris, taking a second career pole position, but it wasn't to be on the Sunday for the Brit. A stellar drive from Max Verstappen halted any chance of a win for Lando running an alternate tire strategy to fight back in the closing moments. Elsewhere around the paddock, Alpine is potentially debating becoming an engine customer, Domenicali is posing the idea to add more sprint races, and Adrian Newey set an outlandish salary request for Aston Martin. On top of this, F1 ticket prices are starting to become a real issue, VCARB brought a huge upgrade package to Barcelona, and a breakdown of the Mercedes email scandal took place. Outside of F1, a bit of time was spent going over the WEC calendar released last week and why the series officials are right in their hesitation to expand the calendar. This year marks the 74th edition of the world's largest motor racing event, the Formula One World Championship. Since 1991, the Spanish Grand Prix has been held at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit in Montmeló, half an hour north of the Catalan capital. However, this year could be one of the last times the Spanish race is held in Catalonia, as Madrid has signed a new ten-year deal with Formula One. But with the future uncertain, the event could also be shared between the two cities, similar to the arrangements from 1969 to 1975 and later, from 2008 to 2012, when F1 races were held in both Barcelona and Valencia. Faced with the threat of losing the F1, the organizers brought the excitement to the heart of Barcelona, inviting fans to the Formula One Fan Village in the Plaza Catalunya Square and later, showcasing the horsepower of some of the race cars with a spectacular road show on the Catalan capital's central Passeig de Gràcia boulevard. The event sparked excitement among fans, who gained exclusive access to an otherwise expensive event, as well as frustration among environmentalists, who argued that it was another part of the privatization of public spaces in Barcelona. Gerard Escaich Folch joins Lea Beliaeva Bander to chat about the history, present, and future of the Spanish Grand Prix. We capture the excitement of F1 fans and the noise of engines and tires during the roadshow and hear from protesting environmentalists.  We also talk to David Vàzquez, the president of the Vallès Oriental Hotels Guild, who explains the economic consequences of moving the Spanish Grand Prix from the Barcelona-Catalunya racetrack. The Catalan phrase of the week is the Formula One appropriate “Fer una parada a boxes”, which means to “make a pit stop.” Get in touch with the podcast team atfillingthesink@acn.cat.

It wasn't to be for George Russell or Lando Norris however, with multiple safety cars playing into Verstappen's favor, seeing him cross the line to take his 60th victory in Formula One. Elsewhere around the paddock, Yuki Tsunoda extended his deal with VCARB for a further year, Perez somehow earned a multiyear extension, and a deep dive into the newly released images and information about the 2026 regulations. Round 8 of the Formula One World Championship brought us to the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo for one of the most boring races in the history of F1, aside from the first few corners and Charles Leclerc breaking his horrid streak of luck at his home race to be the first Monegasque driver to win at home. Around the paddock, McLaren wore a special livery to honor 30 years since Senna's passing, Lawrence Stroll and Alonso are losing patience, and Checo has been offered an extension. Along with this, the FIA abandoned the spray guards, Sainz is on Williams radar, and the CEO of Liberty media seems to have a vendetta against the Andretti family. It wasn't to be for Lando, but the Red Bull seems to be slowly losing its massive advantage over the field. In and around the paddock, Chicago is back in the headlines with rumors of a finalized deal for a date and circuit, Alex Albon extending with Williams past 2026, and Ferrari's key engineering and development pickups from Mercedes. Along with this, Adrian Newey has stated that he wants to continue designing, Haas may be eying Zhou over Bearman, and Bottas may be turning some eyes at Alpine and Williams.  Plenty of racing is coming up this week with the Spanish GP in MotoGP, the 108th running of the Indy 500, and the Monaco GP in Formula One. Round 6 of the Formula One World Championship brought us to the Miami International Autodrome for a now infamous Miami Grand Prix. The sprint weekend saw some incredible wheel to wheel racing between Hamilton and Magnussen in the sprint, Sergeant being taken out at his home race through no fault, and  a first career victory for Lando Norris after a wonderful strategy, well timed safety car and upgraded McLaren. In other places around the paddock, we remembered Ratzenberger and Senna who both lost their lives 30 years ago this week at Imola, Adrian Newey's departure from Red Bull is now fully confirmed, and we had a massive tease and subsequent disappointment from Ferrari when regarding their special blue livery this week. On top of this, members of congress have written to Liberty Media to request answers on Andretti's denial to the sport, F1 Academy announced a Netflix series, and Williams have asked the FIA to approve Antonellis entrance to the sport. Finally, next week sees a hefty amount of racing including the 6hr of Spa in WEC, Rally de Portugal in WRC, and the GP de France in MotoGP. Round 5 of the Formula One World Championship took us to the Shanghai International Circuit for the first time since 2019. And a worthwhile wait it was, F1's first sprint weekend of the year paired with some well timed rain set up for some masterful qualifying moments and good racing throughout the field. Lance Stroll's incident with Daniel Ricciardo was not one of those moments, but one of high discussion with Stroll blaming someone who was clearly the victim in the situation. While it was a straightforward win for Verstappen in both races, the battle for the podium was enthralling in both. Other news this week in the paddock revolved around Tsunoda being on Audi's shortlist as well as them bringing the German National Anthem back to F1, Liam Lawson potentially looking out of Red Bull, and worries that the 2026 regs may hinder the peak performance of an F1 car. On top of this, the impact report for 2023 was released, Red Bull is potentially in talks with Sainz, and a new points system may be on the horizon to bring more value to the midfield battle. He counts Sylvester Stallone, David Letterman and Jay Leno amongst his friends. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland to a middle class working family. On the way to his dream, he worked as a laborer in the iron ore mines of Australia and, while traveling the race tracks of England, even took up residence in a school bus. He competed in the Formula One World Championship, being ranked 10th in the world. He made six starts in the Indianapolis 500 before winning the 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race, two years in a row. Imagine what it would be like to work in Formula One!  Imagine being part of a team of super smart people, all with the same goal - to get two cars around a track quicker than your competitors.  Imagine doing that consistently for two seasons and winning the highest accolade in motorsport - The  Formula One World Championship! Join me as I catch up with my good friend Graeme Hackland who is the first to admit he's not a car guy.  There is always an exception to the rule and Graeme is quite possibly the only non-car guy I will have on my show.  If Taylor Swift or Kylie agree then I may change my mind. This episode was so insightful, and I really enjoyed the conversation.  We talked about teamwork, what it meant to be part of something very special in the mid 2000s, way before Netflix!  Graeme talks fondly about some of the drivers he had the chance to work with and what made one, who is still racing so great!  Graeme also talks about how non glamours the sport is for those doing the hard work. This was a great catch up which I hope you enjoy too! My thanks to Graeme for taking the time out of a very busy schedule to catch up with me! Show Sponsor:  www.LaShamanaFaby.com Mario Andretti - Race Car Legend Not many have driven a race car better than Mario Andretti. He could make a bad car competitive and a competitive car victorious. He won the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500, the Formula One World Championship and the Pikes Peak Hillclimb. He won the Indy Car National Championship four times and was a three-time winner at Sebring. He won races in sports cars, sprint cars, and stock cars - on ovals, road courses, drag strips, on dirt and on pavement. He won at virtually every level of motorsports since he arrived in America from his native Italy at age 15. He is a racing icon, considered by many to be the greatest race car driver in the history of the sport. Assessing his legacy is easy...he drove the careers of three men. He drove with a passion and joy that few have equaled - and he won. Mario Andretti took the checkered flag 111 times during his career - a career that stretched five decades. And he was competitive all of those years: He was named Driver of the Year in three different decades (the 60s, 70s, 80s), Driver of the Quarter Century (in the 90s) and the Associated Press named him Driver of the Century in January, 2000. The admiration for Andretti has been for his achievements on the race track. He is in the very elite, top-superstar category of his game. Yet, if you look at his whole life, he has seen the world that most people will never see. And the journey he has made is what made him a very rich man.

Today's guest is a very exciting one for me, as I am a HUGE Formula One fan. I had the opportunity to speak with the racing legend himself, Mario Andretti – a man widely accepted as the greatest race car driver in history. His wins include the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500, the Formula One World Championship and the Pikes Peak Hillclimb - but it doesn't stop there. He has also won the Indy Car National Championship four times and was a three-time winner at Sebring. He won races in sports cars, sprint cars and stock cars - on ovals, road courses, drag strips, on dirt and on pavement, winning 111 races in his career. He is a true racing icon and I am thrilled to share our conversation about his career success with you.

Mario Andretti is a racing icon. He's won the Daytona 500, the Indy 500 and a Formula One World Championship—a feat no other racecar driver has achieved. He's taken the checkered flag 111 times during his career, and today, he shares his stories and reflections from his more than 50-year career in the inaugural episode of Johnny g & Friends. John Gamauf (aka Johnny g) first met Mario in the mid-90s at an IndyCar race. Their friendship solidified when they traveled across the country visiting dealers during the Ford-Firestone recall. Mario had just signed on as a Firestone spokesman, and Johnny g served as president of consumer tires in North American for the company. From this, they formed a bond that has lasted for 21 years. In this episode of Johnny g & Friends, hear about Mario's humble beginnings in racing, how he's impacted the evolution of tire technology and why he stood up for the Firestone brand during a tumultuous time. Johnny g & Mario also discuss:- Returning to his hometown in Italy to shoot “Drive Like Andretti” and the memories he has as a young Italian refugee and young immigrant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania- The evolution of technology in racing from when Mario started to now and what it takes for drivers to extract what they need from the vehicle- The Ford-Firestone recall and why Mario became a spokesperson and “put his name on the line” for the Firestone brand during that time- Mario's reflections on being a test driver for Firestone and the improvements in race tire technology he's experienced along the way- Mario's greatest stories from racing with his son, Michael, and how he and his twin brother, Aldo, have created a family of professional racecar drivers- Mario's “Father's Day gift” from his son at one of the closest races in IndyCar history- Mario's reflections on the impact of his career and being named to the “Living Legends” list in the Library of Congress- Where Mario's intense drive to succeed comes from and his formula for creating a great team on and off the racetrack - Why, to this day, Mario still loves the sound of opera over the sound of an engine- Mario's dream guests to a dinner party and why it includes Lady Gaga and Mikhail Gorbachev- Mario's memories and funny stories of working with Paul Newman as a driver for Newman/Haas RacingWatch the full episode at tirereview.com or on Tire Review magazine's YouTube channel. Richard Young has been there and done that and then some!  He founded and hosted one of the most popular magic podcasts ever created.  He is part of internationally successful Illusion Act 'Young And Strange' who literally tour the world with their brand of comedy magic and illusions.  He is in great demand as a professional magician.  Finally he runs Changing Cards supplying some of the best gaffed cards to magicians all over the world. Here is his biography. Richard Young in his own words.I was 9 years old when a magic set received as a Christmas gift from my Godmother began a lifelong passion. Looking back, I now realise that my parents ‘playing along' and telling me they didn't know how I did the tricks (when obviously they did) really solidified the hobby, it gave a shy council estate kid a feeling of importance and worth. I got into trouble at school for doing tricks when it wasn't an appropriate time, although a frustration to my classroom teachers, my headmaster granted me the option to perform when it was appropriate in morning assemblies for the entire year, they were some of the most important gigs of my life. I was completely in love with magic and performing, nothing else in life mattered.Witnessing a performance by the world's greatest magician and international superstar David Copperfield on his UK arena tour when I was aged 11 sealed my fate as a magician for life. Aged 14 I met an older professional magician who lived near to my house who offered to mentor me for free, these two incidences combined with fully supportive parents meant there would be only one path and one career for me. I was completely consumed.Shortly after leaving University I proudly joined The Magic Circle as one of its youngest ever members, a few years later in 2018 the President of the club promoted me to M.I.M.C (Member of The Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star) which is the highest level of membership, an exclusive sinister sounding yet actually quite delightful circle of the top magicians on the planet capped at 300 at any one time, an enormous honour.Since finishing my education I have made my living exclusively from performing magic. It has taken me around the world. I performed at the celebration party for Lewis Hamilton after he won the Formula One World Championship. After a brief demonstration before the lot, celebrity Jeremy Clarkson bidded on my services in a charity auction so he could have me perform for his family, he was hosting the auction at the time. I have completed dozens of other performances for people you have heard of many of whom asked me to sign an NDA.Whilst performing at The Edinburgh Fringe I was spotted by a young producer who was looking for magicians for an upcoming theatre tour, little did I know that he would change my life and over the next few years he would take me all over the world as part of his ensemble show Champions of Magic (www.championsofmagic.co.uk) To date I have performed in over 200 theatres around the world with this show, one of them was in an arena in Montreal in front of 8000 people, my biggest ever audience. As part of being in this show I have appeared on Live TV dozens of times performing magic on the BBC, ITV, NBC, FOX and numerous other networks. While of course arena shows, celebrities and awards are all lovely the real reason I love what I do is because I get to meet so many wonderful people from all walks of life at private parties, weddings and corporate events. You are here on this website because you have an event coming up and are looking for something fun that will amaze your guests, I promise you won't be disappointed. In this interview Richard talks about his entire career in depth.  The highs and the lows. He offers advice on subjects such as performing on stage, illusions, building a business, social media and lots more besides. This interview is incredible. If you are a magician it should be required viewing.

Mario Gabriele Andretti is a former racing driver and one of the most successful Americans in the history of the sport. His name is synonymous with Auto racing.  Along with Dan Gurney, he is one of only two drivers to have won races in Formula One, IndyCar, World Sportscar Championship, and NASCAR. He also won races in midget cars and sprint cars. During his career, Andretti won the 1978 Formula One World Championship, four IndyCar titles, and IROC VI. To date, he remains the only driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, and the Formula One World Championship, and, along with Juan Pablo Montoya, the only driver to have won a race in the NASCAR Cup Series, Formula One, and an Indianapolis 500. No American has won a Formula One race since Andretti's victory at the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix. Andretti had 109 career wins on major circuits. Andretti had a long career in racing. He was the only person to be named United States Driver of the Year in three decades (1967, 1978, and 1984). He was also one of only three drivers to have won major races on road courses, paved ovals, and dirt tracks in one season, a feat that he accomplished four times. With his final IndyCar win in April 1993, Andretti became the first driver to have won IndyCar races in four different decades and the first to win automobile races of any kind in five. In American popular culture, his name has become synonymous with speed, as with Barney Oldfield in the early twentieth century and Stirling Moss in the United Kingdom. CHAMPIONS AREN’T SUPER-HUMAN, THEY’RE SUPER-INTENTIONAL. I’ve noticed that there are two types of champions. One of them wins and says, “I am the greatest that ever lived.” The other says, “All of the glory goes to God.” Both of these mindsets have good results, but is one better than the other? You need a certain amount of arrogance to be the best. After all, self-doubt is the biggest crusher of dreams. But if you aren’t able to look at what you could be doing better, you’ll eventually decline. People won’t want to be around you. And you might destroy yourself in the process. So how can we lead with confidence and avoid getting a massive ego? On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about self-doubt and self-love with a sensitive, inspiring Formula One Champion: Nico Rosberg. Nico Rosberg followed in his father’s footsteps to win the Formula One World Championship in 2016. He grew up racing against Lewis Hamilton and constantly coming in second only to one day win the championship for himself. Nico shares how even though he was at the top of his field, he struggled with a fear of failure. In a field as macho as car racing, it’s inspiring to hear a man be so vulnerable. So get ready to learn how the tiny details matter when going for big wins on Episode 889. Some Questions I Ask: Why isn’t Formula One as popular in the US? (06:44) Do you feel like your dad pushed you? (11:00) How much does the car have to do with winning? (16:00) What was the biggest lesson your father taught you? (19:00) Where does your lack of self-love come from? (28:00) What do you think about during the races? (42:00) What’s the key to eliminating self-doubt?
