Episode 98: "An inside look at 16th running of Car and Driver's Lightning Lap, with editor-in-chief Tony Quiroga"In this episode, producer Phil Tower welcomes back Car And Driver editor-in-chief, Tony Quiroga. Tony is an 18-year-veteran Car and Driver editor, writer, car reviewer, and the 19th editor-in-chief for the magazine since its founding in 1955. In this episode, Tony gives us an insider's look at Car and Driver's 16th running of Lightning Lap, an annual test of performance cars held at Virginia International Raceway (VIR). The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 recorded the quickest time this year, lapping the 4.1-mile track in just 2 minutes and 38.6 seconds. The full package is available now on the Car and Driver website and in the February/March issue, which is available now everywhere magazines are sold. Tony told us that VIR is chosen for its length and variety of challenges and that VIR is widely considered to be America's toughest and most-demanding racetrack. This year's 16 Lightning Lap entrants were grouped by base price (which includes performance-enhancing options and has been adjusted for inflation), and their best times determined the finishing order. The goal is to boil down each vehicle's performance to a single number: the lap time.More Online:Lightning Lap 2023: The Hottest Cars on America's Toughest Track https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a42387169/lightning-lap-2023/Like us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/MichigansAutoTalkPodcastMichigan's AutoTalk podcast is available on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Audio, Spreaker.com, Deezer, and Podcatcher.Thank you for listening. 00:00 Show OpenIf you want to spend less, and still have something cool that's fun to drive… I've got good news because today's Better Than New focus vehicle is a sport sedan that comes in multiple configurations to fit your lifestyle. You can get it in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. You can get it with an automatic or a manual transmission. And on top of that, it handles great and comes with a 6-cylinder engine that serves up a healthy amount of power and torque. Or in other words, it's a sedan that's fun to drive.01:20 - Welcome To Better Than NewWelcome to Better Than New and thanks for listening. I encourage you to check out past episodes on interesting used cars, including the first generation Miata, the R56 Mini Cooper S, the Ford SVT Focus, Isuzu's short-wheelbase Amigo/Rodeo Sport, BMW's diesel 335d sports sedan and more. And if you like what you hear, please subscribe and follow so you continue to get interesting tips and ideas for your next fun-to-drive used car. 02:25 - Infiniti G35 OverviewThe first two generations of G-series cars - known as G20 sedans - were front-wheel drive and powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that made 140-horsepower. The G35 - the third generation G-series sedan from Infiniti - was completely different. It was based on Nissan's FM or “Front Midship” platform, which allowed for the engine to be pushed back further toward the center of the chassis for better weight distribution and handling. The G35 was designed from the beginning to be a rear-wheel drive car with the superior handling dynamics that rear-wheel drive offers. There was also an all-wheel drive G35x version that featured a rear-biased AWD system. Finally, instead of a 4-cylinder, the G35 was fitted with Nissan's VQ-series 6-cylinder engine for substantially better performance. The G35 was so good, it was named Motortrend's Car of The Year for 2003 and it was also named to Car And Driver's 10-Best list for 2003 and 200404:55 - You Might Want An Infiniti G35 If...You love rear-drive handling dynamicsYou want a fun-to-drive vehicle, but you need to save moneyYou have considered a crossover, but you think it's a bad ideaYou want AWD that offers handling and driving dynamics06:10 - Infiniti G35 DetailsTransmission5-speed automatic was offered initially at launch 6-speed manual became available later in 2003Engine2003-2004 V6 Engine made 260-hp and 260-lb-ft of torque2005-2006 Automatic Transmission G35 engines were rated at 280-hp and 270-lb-ft of torque2005-2006 Manual Transmission G35 Engines were rated at 298-hp and 258-lb-ft of torque2005 and 2006 Manual transmission cars had a slightly different engine versus those fitted with automatics; manual cars had engines fitted with variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts, whereas automatic cars only have VVT on the intake side. Who killed the Bronco? In the third episode of this series the Bronco moves into middle age. This is the decade that it starts taking a series of body blows. There is increased competition from other carmakers, and complacency within Ford.In the 1990’s the Bronco hit the national headlines for two completely different but equally horrific reasons: The Bronco II rollover controversy, and the OJ Simpson highway chase. The smaller, more nimble Bronco II was built to be fuel efficient and save drivers a lot of money at the pumps… but it ended up costing Ford at least hundreds of millions in the courts.Meanwhile the infamous Slow White Bronco highway chase connected the brand to a violent muder case and issues of race and justice. Did OJ Simpson kill the Bronco?Sonari Glinton looks at the chase from the side of the highway as the Bronco drives past… then checks in with Bronco fans from a parts warehouse in Michigan, and a high school cafeteria in South Carolina.for more info: broncopodcast.ford.com

Welcome to a new PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER STEPHEN PENN TOYOTA & LEXUS IN TROUBLE FOR MISLEADING ADS "Toyota and Lexus repeatedly advertise their hybrid models as “self-charging”. Norway has now decided that enough is enough and banned misleading car commercials in the Scandinavian nation." says electrive: "The Norwegian Consumer Protection Agency officially banned these commercials, deeming it misleading to say “the hybrid battery is free of charge since the electricity produced by the car has a consumption of gasoline as a necessary condition”. "Self-charging is another way to say gas-electric hybrid powertrain, and it doesn't mean Toyota has developed some kind of perpetual-motion machine, says Norway consumer agency. The country's independent Consumer Authority (Forbrukertilsynet), a supervisory agency that "prevents and stops illegal marketing," said that the Lexus and Toyota ads are misleading and give the impression that the hybrid is somehow getting its power for free. " is the take from Car And Driver: "the country's Consumer Authority calling the ad a "pure lie."That's because just calling a hybrid "self-charging" doesn't change the underlying technology. "Self-charging" is just another way to say gas-electric hybrid powertrain, and it does not actually mean Toyota has developed something along the lines of a perpetual-motion machine. In a video ad posted by Lexus U.K., the company says twice in 30 seconds that the hybrid charges itself, claiming that not needing to plug in is "a small detail for those who see a bigger picture. The Consumer Authority made its determination on the misleading nature of the ads after receiving complaints about the phrase, including one from a Lexus buyer who said he is paying for the lie every time he fills up his tank. This is particularly rough in Norway, which is the per-capita world leader in electric vehicles. More than half of all new cars sold there in 2019 came with a plug." From Quartz: "It wouldn’t be the first time Toyota has found itself in trouble with the Norwegian authorities over this issue. In 2017, the government cited the company for misleading buyers by claiming its hybrid cars run in electric mode “up to 60% of the time.” In fact, officials found the actual electric driving time under real-world conditions was no more than about half." And finally from Motoring Research: "Complaints about adverts in magazines referenced the claim that the car could charge itself, without a cost to the driver. One of the ads translates in English to: “In hybrid form Lexus, the power (always costs) absolutely nothing”. The Norway decision contrasts with an earlier ruling by the UK’s ASA that Lexus self-charging hybrid ads are not misleading. The country’s marketing act prohibits false, misleading or unreasonable claims in advertisements, which aspects of the ‘self-charging’ claim fall under. Authorities concluded that Lexus’s ads could lead customers to believe that their car generates free electricity. It claims this marketing content could have influenced customers to buy the car under this false claim." About the ASA in the UK: "The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the self-regulatory organisation of the advertising industry in the United Kingdom. The ASA is a non-statutory organisation and so cannot interpret or enforce legislation. However, its code of advertising practice[1] broadly reflects legislation in many instances. The ASA is not funded by the British government, but by a levy on the advertising industry" https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/27/toyota-lexus-in-trouble-for-misleading-ads/ https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a30675773/norway-lexus-commercial-self-charging-hybrid/ https://qz.com/1791515/norway-tells-toyota-to-stop-calling-hybrid-cars-self-charging/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advertising_Standards_Authority_(United_Kingdom) PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO CRUSHES EPA RANGE RATING ON OUR 436-MILE DRIVE Tom at InsideEVs is a fan of the Porsche Taycan: "Pretty much every driving review of the Porsche Taycan, including our own, has been glowingly positive. It's been called everything from the best electric car today, to the best new Porsche you can buy. " he says on InsideEVs.com: "The Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S have a 93.4 kWh battery, of which 83.7 kWh is usable. Porsche basically holds back 10 kWh of the pack as a buffer, to restrict the depth of discharge, referred to as the DoD, which in turn will extend the life of the pack. When the EPA announced the range rating for the Taycan Turbo at 201 miles per charge and the Taycan Turbo S at 192 miles, it certainly was a disappointment. Even with the cold weather and rain, we averaged 2.96 miles per kWh over the 436-mile trip. If you multiply that consumption rate by the 83.7 usable capacity the Taycan Turbo has, you come up with 248-miles of range per charge." https://insideevs.com/reviews/395038/porsche-taycan-road-trip-240-mile-range/ FERRARI EV PLANS REVEALED IN PATENT DOCUMENTS "Ferrari CEO Louis Camilleri said late last year not to expect an electric car before 2025, but that doesn't mean the engineers in Maranello aren't already developing the technology that will eventually go into one." says MotorAuthority.com: "A patent application filed by Ferrari with the European Patent Office was discovered recently by a member of a Porsche Taycan form and provides some insight into potential plans for Ferrari's first EV. One application is for the modular motor to be used at the front axle, suggesting that the unit could work with an internal-combustion engine at the rear axle in a future hybrid model. Ferrari has already gone down this route with the SF90 Stradale which features two of its three electric motors at the front axle.." https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1126905_ferrari-ev-plans-revealed-in-patent-documents EDF TO SUPPORT ROYAL MAIL ELECTRIFICATION WITH THREE-YEAR DEAL FOR EV CHARGERS "EDF has signed a deal with Royal Mail for the provision of electric vehicle (EV) chargers as the latter continues electrification commitments." reports Current News: "The three-year framework will see EDF provide charging points, associated maintenance and ancillary services such as signs, bollards and wheel stops.Chargers are to be installed on Royal Mail Group sites in the South East of England, with potential for this to increase as required." https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/edf-to-support-royal-mail-electrification-with-three-year-deal-for-ev-chargers AMAZON AND DHL AMONG MAJOR COMPANIES TO JOIN NEW EV ALLIANCE Sustainability non-profit organization Ceres has launched the Corporate Electric Vehicle Alliance to accelerate electric vehicle development. Amazon and DHL are among the major companies to have already joined the alliance in a bid to expand the electric vehicle market and improve the policy landscape. The Corporate Electric Vehicle Alliance is expected to boost the electric vehicle market by signaling the breadth and scale of corporate demand for EVs. It will also provide a platform to coordinate support for policies that enable fleet electrification. ELECTRIC VEHICLE MOTORING THROUGH THE SALARY SACRIFICE SCHEME "Drivers could find themselves better off in the new financial year by taking on an electric car under the government’s salary sacrifice scheme." writes Regit.cars: "The legislation has been around since 2016, ensuring that ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs) were made as affordable as possible. With electric cars being as low emission as possible, the benefits to swapping some salary in return for a car are significant. Now renamed to Optional Remuneration Arrangements, the tax benefits have mostly been removed for petrol and diesel-powered cars, but remain in place for ULEVs. The net result is that a motorist could save as much as £300 per month by opting to go green. With insurance, breakdown cover and maintenance often included in the salary sacrifice schemes, the savings could be even greater throughout the lease of a new vehicle." https://www.regit.cars/car-news/electric-vehicle-motoring-through-the-salary-sacrifice-scheme_72676 NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… If I could one something extra in 2020 with EV News Daily, what would it be?
