What could be more true to the Aussie experience than a bit of bush-bashing off the beaten track, but can EVs cut the mustard when it comes to off-road driving? This is the question Nadine and Rusty are on a mission to answer with Ralph Gilles, head of design at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, who helped design the first off-road 4x4 electric Jeep that might just crawl better than its ICE counterpart. When it comes to engineering and crafting carbon fiber bodied resto-mods, it goes without saying that the SpeedKore Performance Group is at the forefront. Their latest creation, a 1968 Dodge Charger, dubbed Hellucination was constructed for none other than Ralph Gilles, the Head of Design for Stellantis. On the outside, its full carbon-fiber body is nothing short of breathtaking, and when it comes to the interior, that's a work of art as well. Then there's the engine, a 1,000-horsepower 6.2L supercharged Hellephant HEMI V8 from Dodge that propels it forward. In short, this Charger is one of the most beautiful and well-built one-offs that we've ever seen. To give everyone a deep dive into not only SpeedKore and their technology, but the Hellucination Charger as well, we welcome Lyle Brummer, SpeedKore's Director of Design to this week episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast.
Video version of this: https://youtu.be/-wxbrwl0Y70 ABOUT RALPH: Ralph is the Chief Design Officer for the Stellantis Group. This means that there are 15 brands that he oversees. These include Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, Jeep, Lancia, and Maserati. I would suggest that you go and watch the first series of 'Abstract' on Netflix. It is a series that I keep referring to and I profess to have watched it almost as many times as 'Stepbrothers.' It has had a profound impact on me and the reason that I am going on about it is that Ralph has casually got an episode dedicated solely to him and his work. I have to admit that I was not completely cool in this talk with him. I was fangirling a little, and probably too aware of how insanely valuable his time is. Needless to say, he was incredibly kind and full of wisdom on so many levels. Ralph is an incredible leader that has achieved insane levels of success in, quite literally, record time, and all in the face of adversity. It also needs to be said that you would be hard-pushed to find anyone with a negative word to say about him. Ralph has been vocal in his advocacy of teamwork and he knows that empowering his people results in everyone rising together. I can't really say much else - Ralph is a total anomaly. Thank you, Ralph! Wheels - Aston Martin has a new, sexy special edition DBS out called the DBS Superleggera "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and the wheels ARE EPIC! So lets talk about.... WHEELS! Specifically directional wheels. Ralph Gilles hates 'em, but its a trend thats picking up more and more rapidly as electrification becomes more mainstream Hatchbacks and Hot Hatches - Apparently, and this is news to me, the USA HATES them. Why? Probably because they are too busy sucking down all of the Crossover and SUV bullshit the inudstry keeps shoving down their throats. Well thats fine and all, but lets take a moment to appreciate the oddball BMW X2 as a sporty hatchback, and then remember that we still have the GTI and Golf-R....but its not enough! Oh and, i think Jeep should offer a Compass Trackhawk........ yeah, i said it. Stealth and 3000GT/GTO - these are the twins that made my dreams wet as a young man. And im STILL drooling over them. Active Aero, Active Exhaust, AWD and ALL WHEEL STEERING???? in 1991 (through 1999) Thats bonkers! But good luck finding a GOOD used one with low miles for anything under 30k. OK lets be honest, good luck finding one period in good condition. Side note, Toyota is offering NEW Body parts for the MKIII and MKIV Supras! Yes, you read that right, NEW. As in, fresh off the (Stamping) press, warrantied and everything else that comes with the word NEW from an OEM. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sketchbookaudio/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sketchbookaudio/support
