One of the most interesting pieces of data to come from the Big Indie Author Data Drop was that even when indie authors are very successful, they don't stop doing their own marketing. They use tools and assistance/assistants, but marketing remains their responsibility, always. Many of the emerging indie authors, or those not selling, said that marketing was the task they liked least. There's an important mindset shift required to bridge the gap from reluctant or resentful marketing to marketing that is positive and proactive. In this inspiring and mind-shifting session chaired by Melissa Addey, join Dawn Brookes, Mark Dawson, Karen Inglis, Rachel McLean, Alison Morton, Octavia Randolph, Marc Reklau, Brit Bensen, Mark Hayden, and Elizabeth Stevens all multiple bestselling authors who show what makes marketing a positive activity for them. If thinking 'marketing will be with you forever' horrifies you as an author, then you need these sessions! This session is kindly sponsored by 1106 Design. This is a post from SelfPubCon (The Self-Publishing Advice Conference), an online author event, run free twice-yearly, in association with the Alliance of Independent Authors. Find more author advice, tips and tools at our Self-publishing Author Advice Center, with a huge archive of nearly 2,000 blog posts, and a handy search box to find key info on the topic you need. In June 1993, Elizabeth Stevens, 18, was murdered on her way home from the bus stop. Her death began a seven-week reign of terror for the people of Frankston. A serial killer was on the loose. No one was safe, not young mother, Debbie Fream, 22, taken on a trip to the shops, nor Natalie Russell, 17, murdered on her way home from school. The serial killer, Paul Denyer, was captured and sentenced to life in prison. On appeal, he was granted a 30-year minimum sentence. Fast forward 30 years, and Denyer has applied for parole. Award-winning crime writer Vikki Petraitis was on patrol with police the night the final murder took place. She wrote the bestselling book, The Frankston Murders, which has never been out of print. Vikki has revisited the case in a long-form podcast to remind the world why Denyer must never be released. Sometimes, we can try to cover up our past pain with that which we can control-achievement, performance, and productivity. But at some point, those coping mechanisms cannot mask the hurt we are feeling deep inside anymore. What do you do when what you've done to run from your past no longer works to hide what you're truly feeling? For Dr. Elizabeth (Ellie) Stevens, there came a point when what she did to keep the pain from her childhood sexual abuse at bay, no longer worked. She found that she could no longer hide behind performance and her achievements and instead had to face what was below the surface. It took another string of traumas including a sexual assault and traumatic brain injury to bring up the ache she had been ignoring, but when she did, she found that God invited her towards something new: freedom. Even when her poor decisions heaped shame on top of all she was enduring, she was able to start to experience the depth of God's love in the middle of the mess of emotions she was enduring. Now, as a psychiatrist, trauma survivor, and veteran, Dr. Stevens has taken what she has learned in her own journey to help veterans and first responders in theirs. In this conversation, Davey talks with Dr. Stevens about how we often use achievement and performance to cope with our past, the power of God shown through our weakness, and how trauma can help us move from conditional to unconditional love. If you find yourself trying to hide your past pain through achievement and performance and you are ready to experience the freedom God has for you, this episode will encourage you that God wants to release you from that which threatens to hold you back. Pursuing our God-given dreams can lead us into unexpected places, whether it's climbing mountains, building homes, or sharing your story with those who need encouragement. God's beautiful purpose remains steadfast, but sometimes we can't see past the setbacks or the trials that confront us first. Learning to trust God in everything puts us in a posture of peace and allows for His grace to define our days. These are the moments that can hold deep meaning for us when we look back and see that God never left our sides. Our guests this week share with us what happened when they believed for something better when their own plans were sidelined. Dr. Elizabeth Stevens had dreams of joining the Air Force and becoming a psychiatrist, responding to the spark in her heart which told her she could help people in this way. Faced with deeply difficult events and setbacks to her health, she questioned if God had abandoned her when she truly just wanted to live for Him. Daniel and Noell Jett shared a mutual desire of building their dream home together. Proving to be more difficult than they expected, they share how God showed them that it wasn't about having their dream home, but enjoying the journey as a family together—no matter where they laid their heads at night.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview:  Upcoming interview:  Thank you to our sponsor, Samaritan's Purse!   Dr. Elizabeth Stevens Advancing Warriors International Longs Peak Groundhog Day Order Elizabeth's book “Unshackled” at 10% off until 11/17/22 with the discount code UNSHACKLED-JESUSCALLING https://www.drelizabethstevens.com/order-unshackled    Daniel and Noell Jett Jett Set Farmhouse Daniel and Noell's TikTok www.jettsetfarmhouse.com Create Your Dream Home on a Budget   Interview Quotes: “My whole life I really tried to be the person people thought I needed to be, be the person God needed me to be. But a lot of people are dealing with a lot of spiritual struggles, whether they've been burned by a religion, burned by the church, burned by other Christians…And so I've provided that space where they can talk through spiritual struggles, any struggles that they have, and they don't feel judged.” - Dr. Elizabeth Stevens “God redeems all wounds. If you're not happy where you are in the moment of this time, you're not going to be happy when you get a new house.” - Noell Jett “We didn't need the material things. What we needed was our relationships and the time that we got to spend together and the closeness and the bond that we had as a family, as one unit—that was really the most important thing to us and still is.” - Daniel Jett ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! If you have unresolved trauma, it will make living healthy a difficult challenge for you. On this episode -  I'm talking with Dr. Elizabeth Stevens about PTSD, barriers to overcoming trauma, and her new book, Unshackled.   TRIGGER WARNING – Dr. Stevens talks about her PTSD, trauma, and sexual assault. She doesn't get specific but if that is a trigger for you - please feel free to skip this episode.  Dr. Elizabeth Stevens is a retired United States Air Force major, board-certified psychiatrist, and trauma survivor. She served in the Air Force for ten years, reaching the rank of major before retiring due to a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. After experiencing healing from her trauma and sifting through the various treatment modalities available, Dr. Stevens developed a nonprofit called Advancing Warriors International. She has created several programs to help veterans, military members, and emergency responders heal from the traumas they have experienced. In this episode, we discuss the following:  The definition of trauma and PTSD Common forms of denial and how denial impacts the trauma process Barriers to healing  The first step a trauma survivor can take to move toward healing  The importance of self-awareness and self-care in the healing process  Resources : Unshackled by Dr. Elizabeth Stevens  Website: https://www.drelizabethstevens.com/  Advancing Warriors International  If you loved this episode, I'd love a 5-star review! About Dr. Stevens: Board-Certified Psychiatrist, Author and CEO of Eden Psychiatry Founder and Executive Director of Advancing Warriors International Everything changed forever the moment I sustained a traumatic brain injury August 1, 2015. This event led down a journey of the destruction of my world as I knew it. I was an officer in the Air Force, a Psychiatrist, and finishing the 14,000 foot peaks in Colorado, who became the shell of a person within a moment. The brain injury was only the beginning of a year that included rape and four more concussions. Although I had been a master at pushing down my failures, emotions, mistakes, and flaws, I had faced more than I could handle. As everything was laid bare, I came to face to face with the darkness within me. The masks I had worn proving my worth were burned off from the traumas, but instead of being left in ashes, I felt an all-consuming love envelop me. A love I knew I did not earn or deserve. This love empowered me to stop shutting my eyes so tightly in despair, shame, and guilt, and I began to unclench my fists to receive God's love, forgiveness, and grace. I experienced moral wounds, trauma, and loss, but received freedom, a greater purpose and my restored sense of wonder that had been lost long before these traumas. About her upcoming book, Unshackled: Trauma can either be used as a catalyst for growth, sparking empathy and a closer relationship with God, or as fuel for shame, avoidance, and isolation. Many veterans and first responders know firsthand the toll that trauma can take but lack the knowledge of how to grow from it and move forward. In UNSHACKLED, Elizabeth Stevens uses her unique perspective as both a trauma survivor and a professional psychiatrist to help veterans and first responders, as well as other trauma victims, learn how to grow and heal from their traumatic experiences so that they can experience the abundant life God has for them. Specifically, you will come to understand and learn the effects of trauma from Elizabeth's story of brain injury, multiple sexual assaults, an eating disorder, post-traumatic stress, suicidal thoughts, depression, and loss of independence;how to get past barriers to healing;which paths will move you forward;the importance of holistic healing—physical, psychological, and spiritual; and that Jesus Christ delivers the ultimate healing. https://www.drelizabethstevens.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tango-romeo/message

It's a quarter past seven in the evening on Friday, June 11, 1993.  18-year-old Elizabeth Stevens is freezing. She's soaking wet from the rain, her short hair clinging to her neck.  She steps off the bus which she caught from Frankston to Cranbourne Road, Langwarrin, and hurries towards her aunt and uncle's house where she lives. She doesn't know she's being watched. She had spent her Friday evening at Frankston Library on an English assignment. Her goal is to one day join the army and she knows she has to complete this TAFE course in order to get there. That particular June night, the rain is so heavy it's difficult to see. As Elizabeth turns into Paterson Avenue a man jumps at her out of the darkness, dressed in a green army jacket and navy baseball cap. The sound of the rain and the roaring wind drowns out her screams.  She feels what she can only assume is a gun to her head as he drags her along someone's front lawn.  Threatening Elizabeth, the man holds her hand, directing her down Paterson Avenue. Passersby think their interaction looks innocent, not knowing that if Elizabeth doesn't comply the man has threatened to “blow her head off”.  He leads her to Lloyd Park into a clump of bushes.  These would be the last moments of Elizabeth Stevens' life.  Less than an hour afterwards the man responsible for her murder would be sitting inside his warm home, enjoying a roast dinner, waiting for his girlfriend to return home from work.   CREDITS Guest: Vikki Petraitis, author of The Frankston Murders: 25 Years On Host: Jessie Stephens Producer: Gia Moylan Audio Producer: Ian Camileri   CONTACT US Tell us what you think of the show via email at truecrime@mamamia.com.au   Join our closed Facebook community to discuss this episode. Was Shakespeare a timeless prophet, a verbal innovator, a technical genius, a man who encapsulated the human condition as no one else has? Well, sort of. But Shakespeare expert Emma Smith argued that much of what we are taught about Shakespeare is not important. She contended that the inconsistencies and uncertainties in his plays are not a problem, but rather the thing that makes them so enduringly relevant. Smith joined us to share from her electrifying new study of the Bard’s work, contained in her book This Is Shakespeare. She brought us into the world Shakespeare inhabited as he emulated his blockbuster rivals and flirted with dangerous issues of succession politics, religious upheaval, and technological change. Time and again, he posed awkward questions rather than offering simple answers, involving the audience in working out their significance. Smith pulled Shakespeare off the high pedestal he’s been placed on and into the messy scuffle for meaning in this unique and illuminating presentation. Emma Smith is professor of Shakespeare Studies at Oxford University. She has published widely on Shakespeare and other early dramatists. She lives in Oxford, England. She's one of the coolest people you'll ever meet, so it's only right that she was invited to hang out at the cool table on TV comedy back in 2000 when she was cast in the role of "Elizabeth Stevens" - aka the college student who sparks a relationship with Ross Gellar aka daughter of Paul Stevens, played by Bruce freakin' Willis, who simultaneously is dating Rachel - got that? Elizabeth chats with us about working with David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston and the man who starred as John McClane in "Die Hard", the movie that Chandler and Joey ironically revere... plus, how she scored the gig, how she was asked to DRESS for the audition, and all things about the episode she chose to break down with us - "The One Where Paul's The Man" (and, in the episode's most memorable scene, "Just A Love Machine").
