Ryan J. Haddad is an actor and playwright whose work across theater and television consistently challenges outdated narratives around disability, queerness and identity. He made a striking Off-Broadway playwriting debut with “Dark Disabled Stories” at The Public Theater, which enjoyed a sold-out, extended run and earned him the Obie Award for Best New American Play. His autobiographical solo show “Hi, Are You Single?” has become a defining part of his artistic voice, touring nationally and earning critical acclaim. Ryan's television credits include memorable appearances on Hulu's “A Murder at the End of the World” and Netflix's “The Politician.”In addition to performing, Haddad is a dedicated writer and access advocate. Today playwright Anna Ouyang Moench sits in the Playwright's Spotlight and, thankfully, after botching her name twice, she was nice enough to stick around. In this interview, we discuss the benefits of writers groups, the pursuit of playwriting, and developing a play during rehearsal through a nontraditional writing approach. We also discuss the techniques of structure, working under time constraints and the the practicality and theatricality of producing, transferring from larger markets to smaller markets as well as building your network as you grow. We also talk about how playwriting helps in the arena of film and television, how to take notes and receive feedback and being mindful when receiving it, how to juggle life's responsibilities and finding discipline while writing, the mechanisms of a play, playing with the structure of timeline as well as obtaining theatrical and literary representation and so much more. Emme Hoy joins Regina Botros to talk about her adaptation of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Emme Hoy was appointed Sydney Theatre Company's new Patrick White Playwrights Fellow, one month before her adaptation of Anne Brontë's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall – opened at Roslyn Packer Theatre. Hoy's relationship with STC began in 2017 when she became a member of the inaugural Emerging Writers Group; she then went on to write additional scenes for the Company's 2018 production of Saint Joan starring Golden Globe Award-winner Sarah Snook. Shortlisted for the 2019 Bruntwood Prize and recipient of the Belvoir's Philip Parson's Fellowship for Emerging Playwrights, the 2020 NIDA STC Pathways Commissions and Melbourne Theatre Company's Writer in Residence Program, Emme completed her Master of Fine Arts in Writing for Performance at NIDA. Her original television series Nobody's Perfect was longlisted for the Australian Writers' Guild's prime time screenwriting competition, shortlisted in the ABC/AWG Laugh Out Loud competition, the Monte Miller Awards, and was a semifinalist in WeScreenplay's international television competition. In 2020 she won the AWG/Audible On Air Competition with her original series Left Behind. In 2017 Emme's play Extinction of the Learned Response was shortlisted for the Patrick White Playwrights Award, the Griffin Award and the 2018 Theatre 503 Playwriting Award; her co-written play Bathory Begins was awarded the 2019 ATYP co-commission; whilst her original play Cry Havoc won the 2020 ATYP Foundation Commission. On this episode we sit down with actor and writer Kirsty Marillier to discuss the question: How do you become a playwright? Kirsty joins us to discuss how she made the journey from acting into writing, eventually creating one of the hottest shows in Sydney at the moment, Orange Thrower. We'll discuss the ins and outs of crafting a script from the beginning and what challenges lay in the way. Kirsty fills us in on the behind the scenes thoughts she has about her own work, and also where it fits in with the changing landscape of Australian theatre. Kirsty Marillier is a South African actor and award-winning playwright. She is currently a part of the Emerging Writers Group at Sydney Theatre Company and has two original works in development. Her first work, ORANGE THROWER, had its stage premiere in February 2022 with Griffin Theatre Company and National Theatre of Parramatta. ORANGE THROWER was the winner of the 2019 Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award. Kirsty is currently in development with Belvoir St Theatre for her second play – THE ZAP, winner of the 2020 Max Afford Playwrights Award, which was developed with Playwriting Australia and Darlinghurst Theatre Company's Next In Line program. Nagle is currently a partner at Pipestem Law, where she specializes in federal Indian law and appellate litigation. Nagle filed an amicus brief in Dollar General v. Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians on behalf of the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center (NIWRC) in pursuit of ending domestic violence and sexual assault. Nagle is a leading voice among indigenous theatre artists. She served as Executive Director of the Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Program, a program designed to support and develop the work of Native artists. Kait Kerrigan is a musical theater writer, YouTube creator, songwriter, and dramatist. Off-Broadway: The Mad Ones (formerly known as The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown) and Henry and Mudge, which toured the country for over a decade. New projects include the immersive house party The Bad Years, slated for production in 2019, Republic directed by Michael Arden, a fancy new commission they can't talk about yet. Monet's play Torera was slated for production at the Long Wharf Theatre this fall, pre-pandemic. She is former Emerging Writers Group member, current member of the Kilroys, and a staff writer for Law & Order: SVU. She also has her own Wikipedia page. And you've probably seen Ugo in a play at one of the many Downtown Theater Establishments. In fact, Helen Shaw dubbed him "one of our best downtown actors." Mary Kathryn Nagle is a playwright and a partner at Pipestem Law, a firm specializing in tribal sovereignty of Native nations and peoples. She was born in Oklahoma City, OK, and is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.[1] She currently serves as the executive director of the Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Program Nagle is an alumna of the 2013 Emerging Writers Group, a prestigious program supported by The Public Theater for up-and-coming playwrights. During her time in the Emerging Writers Group she wrote Manahatta, a play that received recognition from the groups that give the William Soroyan Prize for Playwriting and the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award.[6][7] Sliver of a Full Moon is one of her most successful works to date, that tells the story the trauma of violence against women.

Paola Lázaro is a playwright and actress born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She holds a BFA in Dramatic Writing from SUNY Purchase College and an MFA in Playwriting from Columbia University. Paola is Atlantic Theater Company’s 2016/2017 Tow Playwright-in-Residence, supported by The Tow Foundation. She was a member of the Public Theater’s 2015 Emerging Writers Group and was selected as Playwright-in-Residence for the 2016 Sundance Theatre Lab in Morocco. Some of her plays include Contigo and There’s Always the Hudson, which was selected as part of Labyrinth Theater Company’s Up Next Series. Paola is the recipient of the Arts Entertainment Scholarship Award (2011) from the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts for her TV pilot episode of “Trópico”. In 2015, she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play for her role in TO THE BONE at the Cherry Lane Theatre. In this episode, we talk with four people in the Dramatists Guild Foundation Fellowship program. DGF Fellows is a year-long development intensive led by esteemed writers. Participants spend a year honing their craft while developing full-length pieces, culminating in an industry presentation at an Off-Broadway theater. The program is highly sought after for its successful format of bringing playwrights and musical theater writers together in the learning process. Keelay Gipson is a multi-disciplinary artist including work as an activist, teaching artist, and award-winning playwright. He is the recipient of the Van Lier Fellowship (2016-2018) at New Dramatists and recently finished work as a Public Artist in Residence for the City of New York’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Administration of Children’s Services working with LGBTQ foster youth. Janine McGuire and Arri Lawton Simon are musical theatre fellows as well as members of the BMI Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop. They have collectively written and produced concerts, stage musicals, plays, film scores, orchestral pieces, choral works, and custom songs in addition to teaching musical theatre and performing arts outreach in the community. Riti Sachdeva is an alum of the The Public’s Emerging Writers Group and the Women’s Project. A theater maker and cultural worker, Riti has been creating art in some form for over 25 years. Incorporating text, installation, and dance into her writing and performance, she straddles the conventions of U.S. theater, performance art, and international approaches to theater. Paola Lázaro is fierce. Here’s a young, talented and emerging wordsmith, in a very crowded landscape, standing as a unique voice. Recent credits: Selected by the Atlantic Theatre Company to be its Tow Playwright-in-Residence as part of the Tow Foundation’s 2016–17 playwright residency program.  She was part of the 2015 Emerging Writers Group at the Public Theater. Received an Arts Entertainment Scholarship Award from the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts for the pilot episode of her TV show, Trópico. Appeared in "To the Bone" at the Cherry Lane Theatre and received a 2015 Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress. In May of this year, Paola participated in the Sundance Institute’s pilot Theatre Lab in MENA, held in Morocco.
