That's right, they've got one more surprise movie to do before The Big One, with 2017's To The Bone taking center stage this week. So put on a nice button-up and give some pretty terrible therapeutic advice, with jokes this week including: More Lone, Love & Leave, a Game of Thrones promise, Paul Rudd in an unexpected appearance, True Blood discussions, and a mid-season retrospective.

If the last few years have shown us anything, it's that our mental health cannot be taken for granted, and that people of color have been particularly vulnerable due to both systemic racism and culture norms. That's why it's so important that mental health issues are accurately portrayed in the media in order to spread awareness and understanding. As one of the more recent cultural portrayals of EDs, I discuss how this film is problematic by employing film critic Laura Mulvey's understanding of fetishistic scopophilia.  Bibliography (show notes):Anorexia Nervosa. 28 Feb. 2018, www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/learn/by-eating-disorder/anorexia. Bahr, Lindsey. “'To the Bone' Walks Fine Line of Depicting Eating Disorders.” AP NEWS, Associated Press, 12 July 2017, apnews.com/article/0e2dd724949145c180569ee624245a97.Boker, Pamela A. “‘How Can He Be so Nothungry?": Fetishism, Anorexia, and the Disavowal of the Cultural ‘I’ in ‘Light in August.’” Faulkner Journal, vol. 7, no. 1/2, 1991, pp. 175–191. Ryan and Mike go deep into "To The Bone", a Netflix special, starring Lily Collins, based on true events surrounding a battle with Anorexia. To The Bone, is as intense a look into treatment as any pop culture they've looked at to date, even if the ending is a little too packaged for Ryan's taste. We've talked about pain as entertainment countless times before. From gruesome True Crime podcasts to watching poor Laura get continuously dumped on Love Island, the public's appetite for pain with their popcorn is endless. Sometimes it can feel exploitative, and the line between 'raising awareness' and pure voyeurism gets blurry. Thirteen Reasons Why is a great example of this. To The Bone with Lily Collins is another. HBO's Sharp Objects feels different. The 8-episode mini-series is based on the book by the same name, authored by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl. It is relentless and slow-paced. It's consistently dark. But its treatment of female trauma doesn't feel icky. For once, female trauma isn't used as a plot tool to aid a male storyline. It's an exploration of violence among women - both physical and emotional - and the female body. How our inner lives reflect what we present to the world. How trauma doesn't always mean victim. If you haven't watched it yet - do! And let us know what you thought.

New "Kahnversations" Podcast with Actor Alanna Ubach!   In this episode of "Kahnversations," we interview Alanna Ubach. Alanna Noël Ubach was born in Downey, California, USA and is of Puerto Rican and Mexican decent. A chameleon-like actress and voice over talent, she is best known for her roles in MEET THE FOCKERS, RANGO, the Peabody Award- winning MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE, HUNG, LEGALLY BLONDE, WAITING, and her portrayal of Jo Frumpkis in Bravo's first scripted series,  GIRLFRIENDS' GUIDE TO DIVORCE. She was recently seen in the Netflix film TO THE BONE, alongside Lily Collins and Keanu Reeves, and has a voiceover role in Pixar's upcoming COCO. She has voiced several cartoon roles on series such as EL TIGRE, WELCOME TO THE WAYNE, TEAMO SUPREMO and HANDY MANDY!   Ubach is hardly recognizable from one character to the next, leveraging her broad width of versatility on stage, screen, and animation. She began acting professionally at the age of five. Quoted as "an exceptionally talented and protean actress" by The New York Times and Variety, Ubach made her Off-Broadway debut at the age of fifteen in CLUB SODA. She later starred in KINDERTRANSPORT at the Manhattan Theater Club and PATRIOTIC BITCH, a one woman show at New York's Harold Clurman Theater. Alanna resides in Los Angeles with her husband, Thomas Russo. You can download or subscribe to the podcast for FREE by clicking below. But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? In this episode of Today's Teenager, Roy addresses the Netflix movie To The Bone, which has gained both popularity and notoriety for its treatment of eating disorders. Roy first offers a synopsis of To The Bone before addressing what he see as its positive qualities, like accurately portraying that eating disorders are not about food, the role family plays in the life of someone with an eating disorder, and the lethal nature of untreated eating disorders.  Next, Roy addresses his concerns regarding To The Bone, especially its potential to be highly triggering for someone struggling with an eating disorder. Roy also feels that To The Bone reinforces the stereotype that only girls or women suffer from eating disorders and that anorexia is now the "face" of eating disorders in the media despite not being fully understood and at the expense of realizing the full spectrum of eating disorders.  Roy recommends The Butterfly Foundation, which offers specialized and confidential for individuals and families affected by eating disorders.    Today's Teenager podcast is produced for educational and entertainment purposes only. It is not intended to nor should it be used as a replacement for professional counseling Roy has established Today's Teenager as a non-profit organization dedicated to covering the expenses of therapy sessions and other mental health services for teens and families that would otherwise be unable to afford them. After a break last week, it's a (bumper) episode 19 of The High Low. Of course, we're talking about the incendiary gender pay gap revealed at the BBC and the wider question of the value of each and every job. We discuss the news of R Kelly's alleged disturbing sex cult and how the reporting reflects rape culture and systemic racism. We also unpick the divisive nature of Netflix's new film To The Bone and ask whether it explores the issue of eating disorders with refreshing honesty or whether it simply glamorizes the traumatic reality of anorexia. Plus, we discuss all the books Pandora's been reading, all the mind-losing that Dolly's been doing and there's our first ever High Low dream sequence back to a particularly memorable gaffe in an early episode (nice work Producer Charlie). The idea for this show came from a thread in the Pop Rocket Facebook group, and because there were so many varying opinions on the topic, they knew that they had to cover it on the show. The gang gets real about their personal experiences with weight, and how that has affected how they see weight in the media. They talk about how race, class, and weight intersect, and how the media moralizes fat people in order to make them redeemable in the media consumers mind. They also talk about weight in the age of Instagram, the Kardashians, and unattainable body standards, which Wynter thinks is worse now than ever. Karen pseudo-recommends the new Naomi Watts led Netflix series Gypsy, Wynter talks about the new Marti Noxon film To The Bone and Guy and Margaret talk about the return of Game of Thrones. Lily Collins has never been one to waste time. Since her film debut in “The Blind Side," she’s led fantasy films like “Mirror Mirror” and “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” but 2017 will likely be the year she’ll look back on as a game changer. In this, her first visit to “Happy Sad Confused,” Collins talks openly about growing up as the daughter of a pop icon (Genesis’ Phil Collins), why she decided to open about intensely private subjects like an eating disorder in her book “Unfiltered,” and what it was like to audition for a “Star Wars” movie.
