‘Aether' is the much-anticipated debut album of Forlorn, the ‘folk horror' band who blend expressionist art, crushing soundscapes and paganism to carve out their own brand of innovative alternative music. Throughout ‘Aether', Forlorn pay their respects to the major 'elements', acting as part of a progressing metal pagan ritual. The juxtaposition of ethereal vocals, with chaotic drums and crushing low-level guitars, paired with vocalist Megan Jenkin's brutal screams, bring together Forlorn's unique sound and visual identity. Their haunting live presence has also graced stages across the UK, alongside artists like Dying Wish, DESTRAGE, CRYPTA, Ithica, Devil Sold His Soul and URNE as well as festivals like at Radar Festival, Tech Fest and Collision Festival. Anyone who has seen Forlorn live can attest to the immersive experience it is, with us describing our first time seeing them in 2022 as: A 30-minute showcase of dreamy post-metal with the sharpness of hardcore, explosivity of metalcore and a touch of Midsommar-esqe eeriness. 2025 is looking to be the year they truly break out, and ‘Aether' will be released on March 28th, 2025, via Church Road Records. We spoke to vocalist Megan and guitarist Edd about the new album, and the journey that Forlorn has been on over the past few years. We also learn how Forlorn has slowly found its identity, taking that creativity to another level, expanding on it in both record and live form, and so much more. Surviving NIRVANA members - drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and touring guitarist-turned-actual-band member Pat Smear reunited onstage last Thursday night (January 30th) during the FireAid benefit concert in LA for a previously-unannounced performance of several of Nirvana's classic songs. Filling the lead vocal slot vacated by Kurt Cobain's death almost 31 years ago were guest singers St. Vincent, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon and Violet Grohl, Dave's 18-year-old daughter. There's plenty of other occasions over the last 30-odd years where the Nirvana guys have played together as well, and with Youtube views of their FireAid performance already well into the millions, it doesn't feel disrespectful to ask the question; Is it time for a full-on Nirvana reunion? The guys also chat about new releases from Spiritbox and Stray From The Path, along with big announcements from Radar Festival and Arctangent. Welcome to the One Hundred & Fifty-Seventh Edition of The Chronicles Of Podcast, These are The Chronicles of Radar Festival In this edition we sit down with Joe James, festival director and band booker of Radar Festival, to dive deep into the world of one of the UK's most exciting rock and metal festivals. Joe shares his journey into the music industry, how Radar Festival was born, and how it has rapidly grown into a must-attend event. We explore what sets Radar apart from other festivals, including their unique masterclasses, the process of booking bands, and what fans can expect from Radar Festival 2025. Also this week, we dive into the mysteries of underground tunnels, question how we're supposed to know if someone's actually being chased when everyone just runs these days, and break down the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl madness—including a wild $3 million bet. Tom challenges Jamie with a brutal "Would You Rather" about car accidents, and Jamie asks the question no one else dares: where does Hollywood get all those new-born babies from? The boys also catch up on their week, including Tom's bizarre tale of getting trapped in his own room. Unfortunately there is no Callum's Treaching this week but as always, Tom's Journal is packed with the funniest internet finds of the week, and Jamie's Audience Participation Challenge asks—what's the first thing you'd do if you won a million pounds or dollars? My friend and I enjoy coming up with more accurate names for performing arts festivals here in NYC. You like the Next Wave Festival at BAM? Me too! We call it the Previous Wave, though, because almost everything in it hit its stride 30 to 40 years ago. Which is not to say it's not good! Pina Bausch's company still performs her work with integrity and style. But Pina Bausch died 14 years ago and the last time she was a new up and coming artist was around about 40 or 50 years ago. Now everyone's talking about the Under the Radar Festival recently, due to its being canceled, either permanently or temporarily. My friend and I used to call it the Directly in Line with the Radar Festival due to its shows mostly being works and companies already receiving a fair amount of attention, often European. That is, directly in line with the radar if you happen to have a radar that detects weirdo performing arts. Most of NYC's Indie Arts scene could be standing directly in front of the Public Theater (home of Under the Radar or UTR) waving our arms and shouting, “Hey Radar! Run that radar this way, would you?” But somehow almost everyone I know was under Under the Radar's radar. Packing out their debut year only to crash into a global pandemic, moving to Manchester then being chucked out their new arena shortly afterwards and landing Sleep Token before they became the band who'd sell out Wembley Arena in 10 minutes...The first few years of Radar have been a rollercoaster and as they head into this year's festival, co-organiser/director Ash Cook joins Damnation Vs to share the highs and lows. Thanks for listening, please give the show a follow and tell your mates! ;)

Whether you refer to it as "sunsetting" or "supernova'ing," what's true is that there are few resources to guide those wanting to intentionally shutdown an organization's operations. While a multitude of resources exist dedicated to starting and scaling ventures, the same can't be said when one finds themself on the other end of the organizational life cycle. In this episode, host Tim Cynova connects with guests who were tasked with leading companies through this final phase. Megan Ihnen is a “new music force of nature.” The act of live performance is integral to Megan's work and her performances thrive on elaborate sound worlds and fully-developed dramatic interpretations. Through narrative and non-narrative musical storytelling, she explores the subjects of memory, nostalgia, the perception of time, and relationships. Whether through chamber music, staged recitals, opera, or large ensemble soloist work, she emphasizes the full range of vocal sounds, timbres, colors, and uses that characterize the 21st century voice. Megan is a prolific new music vocalist who has appeared with the International Contemporary Ensemble, Fifth House Ensemble, Latitude49, Great Noise Ensemble, Stone Mason Projects, Rhymes With Opera, SONAR new music, and more. She has sung with many outstanding performers including Nadia Shpachenko, Michael Hall, Gregory Oakes, Nick Zoulek, Hillary LaBonte as well as premiered the work of Mara Gibson, Griffin Candey, Garrett Schumann, Christian Carey, Alan Theisen, Anna Brake, D. Edward Davis, and more. A gifted narrative and non-narrative musical storyteller, Megan's performance work explores the depths of memory, nostalgia, the perception of time, and complex relationships. Ihnen's interpretations of modern and contemporary repertoire have garnered growing acclaim. She is particularly recognized as an excellent recitalist. Her This World of Yes program of contemporary music for voice and saxophone with Alan Theisen explores the themes of pathways, choices, and duality through the work of contemporary composers such as Jessica Rudman, Michael Young, and Michelle McQuade Dewhirst. This World of Yes has been performed across the United States including appearances in Kansas City, New Orleans, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Detroit, and Baltimore. With performances in Washington D.C., Baltimore, Colorado Springs, and Kansas City, Ms. Ihnen has worked with violinist Martha Morrison Muehleisen and Rome Prize winner video artist Karen Yasinsky to take audiences on a profound journey through György Kurtág's Kafka Fragments through video and sound. Finally, Ihnen's Single Words She Once Loved is a performance that centers around the ideas and effects of memory, dementia, and time. It is a deeply personal exploration of the dueling forces of ‘eternal sunshine of the spotless mind' and ‘God gave us memories so that we may have roses in winter'. Single Words She Once Loved features compositions by David Smooke, Ryan Keebaugh, Daniel Felsenfeld, Jeffrey Mumford, and more. Megan has enjoyed performing as part of Tuesdays @ Monk Space, Access Contemporary Music Thirsty Ears Festival, NEXTET, Ethos NewSound, 6:30 Concert Series, International U.S. Navy Saxophone Symposium, SPLICE Festival, Oh My Ears, Second Sunday Concert Series at Boston Sculptors Gallery, Winifred M. Megan has also had recordings on Navona Records, Hoot/Wisdom Recordings, I CARE IF YOU LISTEN Fall 2015 Mixtape, and the CarpeDM Seize Des Moines “Music Mix: Volume III” which was featured at the 2016 SXSW Festival. Her devotion to the proliferation of new music extends beyond the commissioning and performing of music to teaching, workshopping, and mentoring of emerging artists in the field. She also works to increase the visibility and influence of new music through writing on the subject for multiple online and print publications. As a curator, she selected twenty songs for mezzo-soprano and piano for the NewMusicShelf Anthology of New Music. Mezzo-Soprano, Vol. 1 includes works by: Michael Betteridge, Mark Buller, Stephen DeCesare, Douglas Fisk, Matt Frey, Jodi Goble, Ricky Ian Gordon, Cara Haxo, Cameron Lam, Cecilia Livingston, Shona Mackay, Tony Manfredonia, Nicole Murphy, Eric Pazdziora, Frances Pollock, Julia Seeholzer, Alan Thiesen, Dennis Tobenski, Moe Touizrar, and Ed Windels. One-on-One Conversation with Taylor Mac and Lee Breuer: On May 14, 2012, SDCF hosted a One-on-One conversation at the Axis Theatre Company in New York between theatre artists Lee Breuer and Taylor Mac, hybrid theatre artists of limitless imagination and inventiveness working mostly in experimental theatre both nationally and internationally, moderated by Mark Russell, Artistic Director and Producer of the Under the Radar Festival produced by The Public Theater. These artists, who work in multiple disciplines, discuss gaining power through their individuality and originality and identify those singular artists and companies from the past, most notably Charles Ludlam and The Ridiculous Theatre, whose work has inspired and influenced their own. They express their hopes for the future or theatre, and what they gain and learn by working internationally. They share their personal definitions of success and why their work is categorized as political. This insightful conversation sheds light on how to create theatre that is personal, relevant, collaborative and unique. Originally recorded - May 14, 2012. Running Time - 1:23:00 © 2012 SDCF
January is traditionally a lean month for the commercial theater, with tourists leaving and Broadway offering discounts. If you need help climbing out of the winter theater doldrums, New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood suggests you consider some newly minted — as well as more experimental — works being presented in two festivals in New York. Two separate festivals this month bring more than a dozen shows of avant-garde work to the city. The largest is the Public Theater's Under the Radar Festival, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Meanwhile, PS 122 sponsors the COIL festival, which this year is focusing on work from New York City artists.
Writer/humorist John Hodgman joins Theater Talk to discuss many topics including his new show “I Stole Your Dad” at the Under the Radar Festival, as well as how to cook owls and Jerry Lewis's legendary suppressed film "The Day the Clown Cried."
Nature Theater of Oklahoma looks backward (and forward!) in theater time with curator Mark Russell of Under the Radar Festival in New York City. Join us as we chat with Mark about his early years in the Austin, TX music scene, his tenure at PS122, the invention of UTR, and hopes and fears about his upcoming move to Lausanne, Switzerland. Together we talk about drilling down, burning out, and branching out, and still somehow keeping one foot in the city we all love.
