Bay Area Theatre in 2023: Best of the Year

KPFA - Bay Area Theater

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 8, 2024 6:00

KPFA theatre critic Richard Wolinsky discusses the year in theatre in the Bay Area in 2023, plus a top ten list and two honorable mentions.   Text of the podcast. In the Bay Area, Live theatre companies continued in 2023 to adapt to the post-Covid world. While movie audience sizes seems to be returning to pre-pandemic numbers. live theater remains mostly on life support across the board, mainly because season subscriptions are down by at least a third or maybe more, which means theatergoers are buying tickets on a show by show basis. That makes planning difficult, and it also means artistic directors are less likely to produce shows that are more challenging in favor of audiences pleasers such as musicals, comedies, and most importantly, the warhorses that folks are willing to see over and over again. The great multi-theatre venue, Piano Fight, in the Tenderloin closed its doors in March, leaving a host of younger theatregoers bereft. Bay Area Musicals didn't survive the pandemic, and its successor Landmark Musicals did not get past 2023. Marin Theatre Company, ACT, and the Magic have had truncated seasons, and Cal Shakes chose not to have a season at all. Custom Made is on life support and may never return. But there was still quite a bit of quality theatergoing to be had in the plastic year, and here are ten examples fin no particular order. Clyde's, a former Tony nominee by Lynn Nottage had a sensational production at Berkeley Rep's Peets theatre. As did the creepy and scary Let the Right One in at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre. Margo Hall was phenomenal in Josephine's Feast over at the Magic, and it doesn't get any better than J. Jha in Gertha Reddy's adaptation of the Mahabharata at Z Space, co-produced by the Oakland Theatre Project. Poor Yella Rednecks, Vietgone II at ACT's Strand Theatre looked at a Vietnamese refugee family in America, and Cambodian Rock Band at ACT focused on the generational aftermath of the Killing Fields and the Cambodian Genocide. Then there was Nollywood Dreams, a screamingly funny look at the Nigerian film industry, and Billy Crudup's brilliant performance in Harry Clarke at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre. Rounding out the top ten are San Francisco Playhouse's brilliant production of A Chorus Line, and the very weird, funny and horrifying Locusts Have No King at New Conservatory Theatre. A couple of honorary mentions go to Kander and Ebb's brilliant The Scottsboro Boys at 42nd Street Moon, and William Finn's 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at TheatreWorks. She's personally made over 20,000 fundraising "asks" and trained non-profit orgs to raise over $15M (primarily in donations under $2K), which inspired her 5-Minute Fundraising Ask Training Program. Kel's work boils down to “Taking the Ick out of the Ask”: she's passionate about shifting fundraising conversations away from transactional encounters and toward relationship-building opportunities. Kel's worked with such organizations as: Berkshire Theatre Group, The Glimmerglass Festival, MCC Theatre, Signature Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, New York Theatre Workshop, Marin Theatre Company, BroadwayUnlocked, American Composers Forum, and RIP Medical Debt. The Tony Award-Winning SAN FRANCISCO MIME TROUPE Debuts a NEW Activist Adaptation of the Dickens Classic as a Radio Play A RED CAROL  An Activist Adaptation of the Dickens Classic Written and Directed by Michael Gene Sullivan Begins streaming FREE on Fri. Nov. 26, 2021 - Jan. 9, 2022 (donations accepted) For the first time the SF Mime Troupe presents a Holiday Audio offering with a worker's take on the Dicken's classic in A Red Carol. With its particular blend of activism, comedy, music, and passion the SFMT's labor-oriented adaptation of Dickens "A Christmas Carol” reclaims this revolutionary classic as a story not of the redemption of one bad man, but as the never-ending story of all of us making the world a more progressive place. In A Red Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is a corporate banker, busy foreclosing on the hapless masses. Bob Cratchit and his beleaguered family live in a chilly tent in an anonymous homeless encampment. The ghost of Christmas future sports a flowing black robe of taped-together trash bags and plastic sheeting. Tiny Tim dies. At least that's how the SF Mime Troupe's resident playwright, Michael Gene Sullivan, has reimagined A Red Carol for the troubled 21st century. A Christmas Carol” has become “the closest thing to a modern myth that we have. It wasn't much of a stretch to place Charles Dickens' Victorian classic into today's Covid-19 world. And that, as Sullivan would be the first to tell you, is exactly the point. Dickens' novella was written in the heart of the “Hungry '40s,” a time of labor unrest, unemployment and starvation across 19th-century Europe. The gap between rich and poor was wide - and getting ever wider. With the limited release of A Red Carol, the San Francisco Mime Troupe hopes it will become an annual alternative holiday tradition for the workers of the world. For more information visit www.sfmt.org or call 415-285-1717.  CRITICS SAY “The play, in its skewering of America's social ills—racism, corporate greed, the plight of the working class—is so funny, and so well acted by the Troupe, including longtime ensemble members Velina Brown, Keiko Shimosato-Carreiro and Brian Rivera , that it comes to life even without visuals and minus the appreciative laughter of a sun-soaked audience. The second half of “The Mystery of the Missing Worker” airs Aug. 29.” SF Examiner - July 6, 2020 “As a spoof of serials past, it's solid, quick-witted, and sets the bar high for subsequent episodes, which will satirize other radio-drama templates—namely adventure, horror, and science fiction." KQED - July 8, 2020 _____________________________________________________ MICHAEL GENE SULLIVAN Actor, Director, Teacher, and Resident Playwright Michael Gene Sullivan has performed in, written, and/or directed over thirty SFMT productions. As an actor Sullivan has also appeared in productions at the American Conservatory Theater, Californian Shakespeare Theatre, Theatreworks, San Francisco Playhouse, Denver Center Theater Company, The Aurora Theatre, The Magic Theatre, The Marin Theatre Company, Lorraine Hansberry Theater, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Berkeley Repertory Theater, and San Jose Repertory Theater. Michael has been a principal actor in Mime Troupe plays since 1988, performing in Freedomland, Ripple Effect, For The Greater Good, 2012: The Musical, Posibilidad, Too Big To Fail, Making a Killing, GodFellas, Doing Good, Showdown at Crawford Gulch, Mister Smith Goes to Obscuristan, Eating it, Damaged Care, Soul Suckers form Outer Space, Revenger Rat, Escape to Cyberia, Offshore, Social Work, I Ain't You uncle, Back to Normal, Rats, Seeing Double, and Ripped Van Winkle. His directing credits at SFMT include Schooled, For The Greater Good, Red State, Veronique of the Mounties, 1600 Transylvania Avenue, Killing Time, and Coast City Confidential, Michael has also directed for the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, African American Shakespeare Company, Mystic Bison Theater, and Circus Finelli. Michael is a Resident Playwright for the Playwrights' Foundation, a 2017 Resident Artist at the Djerassi Arts Center, from 2009 - 2016 he was a blogger for The Huffington Post, and Michael has been SFMT's Resident Playwright since 2000.

From the New York Times review: “Hattie Shepherd, the title character of Ayana Mathis's piercing debut novel, is at once a tragic heroine with mythic dimensions and an entirely recognizable mother and wife trying to make ends meet. Her story, set in 20th-century Philadelphia, is one of terrible loss and grief and survival, a story of endurance in the face of disappointment, heartbreak and harrowing adversity.” This was a debut novel. KPFA theatre critic Richard Wolinsky updates the state of Bay Area theatre and gives a listing of on-line streaming theatre, both local and national. Text of update. During times of stress, live theatre has been out front, enhancing community, relieving anxiety, and pointing the way to better futures. Now, of course, audiences are sitting in their homes, and theatres around the world are shuttered.   Cal Shakes, California Shakespeare Theatre, has cancelled its entire 2020 season The final plays from Bay Area companies of the 2019-2020 season have already been cancelled or will be cancelled as social distancing most likely continues into the summer.   But live theatre does go on, or at least recordings of live theatre, which can be seen by accessing your Roku, your Apple TV, your smart television, or your laptop, tablet or cell phone.   In the Bay Area. Berkeley Rep, Marin Theatre Company and Theatreworks Silicon Valley have all presented their most recent productions, streaming, to ticket buyers, with limited additional purchase days. ACT's two shows, Gloria and Toni Stone, are still streaming this week. Tickets can be purchased through late in the day April 3rd and streaming ends on April 5th. Go to act-sf.org for more information.   Around the Bay, The Magic Theatre is offering a daily mini-podcast with various playwrights through soundcloud. Go to magictheatre.org. Marin Theatre Company continues to offer its most recent production, Love. For more information, go to Marintheatre.org. Shotgun in Berkeley is planning a series of podcasts of plays and artist interviews, dates undetermined. For more information, go to shotgunplayers.org. Theatre Rhino has been presenting live one-man productions with John Fisher on Facebook Live, including streaming his recent show at The Marsh, Radical. For up to date information and tickets go to therhino.org.   Moving outside the Bay Area. London's famed National Theatre is streaming free one play each week, all week, starting this Thursday with One Man, Two Guvnors starring James Corden, followed on subsequent Thursdays by Jane Eyre and Treasure Island, with Twelfth Night starring Tamsin Greig beginning April 23rd. You can find those plays on the National Theatre You Tube channel.   Terrence McNally, one of the first casualties of Covid-19, is being honored by LA TheatreWorks with an audio-only recording of Lips Together, Teeth Apart at latw.org. A 2018 documentary on the famed playwright, Every Act of Life, is available at Amazon Prime., which also has film versions of The Ritz, and Frankie and Johnny, and a documentary on Corpus Christi.   The Public Theater is streaming it's free Shakepseare in the Park production of Much Ado About Nothing, at thirteen.org, The Metropolitan Opera is streaming, free one opera a day from its 14 year series of theatrical recordings, starting at 7:30 pm and continuing to 6:30 the next day. Go to the Met Opera on Demand app on Roku or Apple TV or Samsung smart TVS, click browse and preview or explore the app on tablets and cell phones to access without logging in. For dance fans, Aivin Ailey. Org is streaming full length works, dance classes and short films.   Moving into subscription services, you can watch plays first aired on Great Performances if you're a KQED subscriber, on the PBS app. Many of those same plays, plus many more, can be seen on the BroadwayHD app. That app has a seven day free trial period before paid subscriptions kick in.   Amazon Prime also has a pretty fair selection, though you have to go down several rabbit holes to get there. Netflix is more spotty, focusing mostly on films and TV shows. You Tube also has several full performances and recordings as well, but like Amazon Prime, it requires some effort to find them, and you have to make sure you're getting the full play, and not a short clip.   Moving forward, most of the Bay Area theatre companies have released their upcoming schedules for the fall. BroadwaySF just sent out information to subscribers about its next season, which includes Hadestown, Moulin Rouge and To Kill a Mockingbird.   Right now, though, we all have to live day by day, and keep our fingers crossed that we will have live theatre back on the baords in the late summer and fall. KPFA theatre critic Richard Wolinsky discusses theatre closings, streaming plays by Bay Area theatre companies, and theatre you can watch on-line, including how to watch shows from Berkeley Rep, ACT and TheatreWorks Silicon Valley. Text of commentary: Live entertainment has shut down all across the Bay Area. This is particularly problematic for local theatre companies. Shows that were in the midst of their runs were forced to close early. Shows in rehearsal shut down, never to open. Shows on the schedule and in pre-production involving set, lighting and costume design, even before rehearsal have been cancelled. Free-lancers who were already reeling bedue to the collateral damage of AB 5, which affected theatre companise relying on gig economy workers, now are in bigger trouble. Actors, directors, lighting designers, set designers and other key technical staffers are all out of work. But expenses — from rent to insurance to utilities do go on, and all companies will move toward the red. The fallout will be severe, and we don't yet know its full extent. Some companies will fold. And we also don't know when this will end, or how it will end, which means it's wishful thinking on the part of artistic directors when they say they'll cancel the upcoming show, but not the one after that, and they all know it. When a show is cancelled, it's hard to reschedule because cast members often have commitments far into the future. In this summer of Stephen Sondheim's 90th birthday, special productions of Follies at SF Playhouse or the two versions of Merrily We Roll Along at 42nd Street Moon will especially be missed if they are cancelled.   We also, of course, don't know when this will end, which means it's probably wishful thinking on the part of most artistic directors when they say they'll cancel the next show, but will produce the one after that. Nobody knows.   Of the larger companies, Marin Theatre Company, San Francisco Playhouse, Shotgun, and Aurora are all dark for the current and next production, at least. The Curran has cancelled performances of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Broadway SF of Hamilton until May 1st. Again, wishful thinking, but we'll see.   The Bay Area's three largest non-profit theatre companies Berkeley Rep, ACT and TheatreWorks Silicon Valley have all negotiated separately with the various unions to stream recordings of their most recent shows on-line. How to see the shows and the dates involved are different for each.   If you have a ticket to either of the two Berkeley Rep shows, the two ACT shows or the Theatreworks show, you'll be sent, or have been sent, an email with instructions on how to access the streaming recording.   Berkeley Rep's upcoming show School Girls, or the African Mean Girls Play, was scheduled to play the Roda. A recording was made at a performance following two tech rehearsals. Costumes weren't completed and there was no audience. The general public can buy tickets to see the show streaming at Broadway HD through the Berkeley Rep website, Berkeleyrep.org, or by calling the box office at 510-647-2949, through tomorrow, Friday March 20th, at 5 pm. Ticket holders only for Culture Clash Still in America can still see a recorded performance, and e-mails are being sent out. All ticket holders will have two weeks to see their respective shows.   Over at ACT, Gloria at the Strand was in the middle of its run, and Toni Stone had just completed its opening performance when the shows were shut down. Patrons who had purchased tickets prior to the cancellations can also see the shows in their own homes on the Broadway HD app or website. For new ticket buyers interested in streaming Gloria and/or Toni Stone, go to www.act-sf.org or call A.C.T. at 415-749-2228. Purchasers will receive a link to a password-protected site from A.C.T. to view the production. Ticket buyers have until Friday, April 3 at midnight to purchase tickets and all ticket holders have until Sunday, April 5 at midnight to view the recordings online. ACT is asking ticket buyers to consider choosing a price point for themselves that feels generous, as well as financially accessible, keeping in mind the number of people in their household who will be watching the production.   Theatreworks was playing They Promised Her The Moon by Laurel Ollstein at the time they closed down. The show will be available for streaming by patrons who have already bought tickets to the show, and e-mails will be sent when the negotiations are finalized. For up to date information you can go to theatreworks.org. Ragtime, which was scheduled to be the next show for the company, has been moved to spring, 2021.   For those who need their theatre fix, there is Broadway HD, which has a free 7 day trial period in which you can binge as many shows as you can. Both Amazon Prime and Netflix have theatrical recordings, but you have to search really hard to find them, going down several rabbit holes, but they're there. There's also Kanopy, a free streaming service from your local library that has an incredible line-up of films and recorded plays. There's a monthly limit on what you can see, and your library pays $2 for each viewing, but it's free to you.   A personal plea here: If you have tickets for cancelled performances at any theatre venue in the Bay Area. Please consider ripping up the tickets rather than asking for a refund. This is true for companies like Marin Theatre Company, SF Playhouse, New Conservatory, Brava, Piano Fight or Shotgun, or Bay Area Musicals, 42nd Street Moon, Ubuntu, Aurora, Virago, I can't name them all, and down to the smallest theatre company or school production, as well as the various community theatres that keep the canon of musicals and classic plays alive. Just as with restaurants and small businesses, we don't know what will survive the shutdown, and the more that stay open, the richer the entire Bay Area will be. Think about it. I'm Richard Wolinsky on Bay Area theatre for KPFA. KPFA theatre critic Richard Wolinsky reviews “Noura” by Heather Raffo, a co-production of Marin Theatre and Golden Thread, at Marin Theatre Company through Feb. 9, 2020. Text of review (audio is slightly different). The cost of war is always high. It's high at the start, through violence, destruction and the death of soldiers and innocent civilians. It's high later on through the rebuilding process, and it becomes higher still when, through unintended consequences, everything falls apart. That happened to Mosul, one of Iraq's largest cities, surviving the American invasionand then succumbing to the horrors of the ISIS takeover. When ISIS came in, Assyrian Christians were forced to leave their homes and their lives. Many came to America, and those exiled Iraqis are the subjects of Noura, a play by Heather Raffo, at Marin Theatre Company through February 9th, in a co-production with Golden Thread. It's Christmas, and Noura and her husband Tareq, have been living in New York City for the past eight years. They're expecting a visit from Maryam, an orphan girl who grew up in a convent, whom Noura sponsored for school in America. Tareq was a surgeon in Mosul but now can't operate because his hands never stop shaking. Noura was an architect, but once in America, she stopped pursuing her profession. Because of all the upheaval, she's no longer sure who she is. Iraqi? American? What is she? It's driving her crazy, and she's not making it easy on her husband, her young son, or their best friend, the muslim Rafa'a, whom Noura knew as a child growing up in Mosul. And then when Maryamm shows up, she's not at all what Noura expected. What Heather Raffo has done, and done well, is show how deep the collateral damage of war can run. Noura and Tareq have a nice life, their son is fully American, but they are neither here nor there. Iraq can never leave them, though realistically they know they can never go back. Even if they could, the Mosul Noura knew is gone forever. Denmo Ibrahim rules the stage as Noura, who wavers between being supportive of others, and anger that she's lost control of what's important.. Maya Narzai as the forthright Maryam and Mattico David as the supportive Tareq give equally strong performances, joined by Abraham Makany as Rafa'a. For most of its running time, the play brilliantly lays out the full brunt of the family's life as refugees. But then at the end, melodrama takes over. Every question is answered as a series of personal secrets are revealed. But really – there's no need. In a political play, the political IS personal. Noura by Heather Raffo, a co-production of Golden Thread and Marin Theatre Company plays at Marin Theatre Company thru February 9th. For more information you can go to Marin theatre.org. We talk with Lauren Gunderson, who is the most produced living playwright in America this year, as well the winner of this year's New Dramatists' Lanford Wilson Award, and a recipient of the Mellon Foundation's 3-Year Residency with Marin Theatre Company. Lauren has written many plays about science, including Ada and the Memory Engine, Leap, and The Amazing Adventures of Dr. Wonderful and Her Dog. We discuss the mathematics of playwriting, the powerful effect of metaphors when it comes to scientific discovery, the Bechdel Test (and, spoiler alert: how nearly all of Lauren's plays pass it) and how science makes for thrilling drama.
