Ryan J. Haddad is an actor and playwright whose work across theater and television consistently challenges outdated narratives around disability, queerness and identity. He made a striking Off-Broadway playwriting debut with “Dark Disabled Stories” at The Public Theater, which enjoyed a sold-out, extended run and earned him the Obie Award for Best New American Play. His autobiographical solo show “Hi, Are You Single?” has become a defining part of his artistic voice, touring nationally and earning critical acclaim. Ryan's television credits include memorable appearances on Hulu's “A Murder at the End of the World” and Netflix's “The Politician.”In addition to performing, Haddad is a dedicated writer and access advocate. His essays have appeared in The New York Times and Out Magazine, and he is a contributor to the anthology “Disability Intimacy,” curated by Alice Wong. His creative work and activism have earned him a Drama Desk Award, a Paula Vogel Playwriting Award from Vineyard Theatre and a Disability Futures Fellowship. He is also a proud alum of the Public Theater's Emerging Writers Group. In this interview, conducted just a few days before he premiered his latest solo piece, “Hold Me in the Water,” at Playwrights Horizons in New York City, Ryan reflects on the pivotal experiences that shaped his journey as an artist, from performing fairy tales in his childhood living room to commanding major stages and screens. He speaks candidly about navigating the entertainment industry as a gay man with cerebral palsy, building a career on his own terms and advocating for authentic representation and accessibility in the arts.https://www.ryanjhaddad.com/https://www.playwrightshorizons.org/about/production-history/2020s/2425-season/hold-me-in-the-water

On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Joshua Silverstein, an award-winning actor, comic, writer, allergy-culture advocate and food lover. Silverstein's creativity clearly lends itself well to the kitchen, especially since he needs to work around his many allergies. “My relationship with food has been challenging, it's been exciting, it's led to a lot of interesting stories,” he explains. The executive director of Cazadero performing arts camp, he is also a staple writer-performer at The Braid Jewish Theater Company. Silverstein's The Braid's shows include “True Colors,” “What A Surprise” and the upcoming “Hold Me, Heal Me,” as well as a solo show. “Because I'm a father with a multicultural family that leaves room for a lot of experimentation [especially since] my children also have allergies,” he says. Silverstein explains how he gets to be a “mad scientist” in the kitchen. Combine the mindset of exploration with being inclusive. “The kitchen should be a place of play and fun, and that's a privilege,” he believes. “Keep trying new things [and] keep being curious about what's on the other side of people's palates.” Joshua Silverstein talks about his upbringing, creativity in the kitchen, and how everything his family eats is a community project. He also shares about his grandmother's latke recipe, which you can get at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. There are also shout outs to Natasha Feldman, NoshwithTash.com, author of “The Dinner Party Project.” Learn more at JoshuaSilverstein.com and CazFamilyCamp.org. INTERLOPER! We have an interloper in the podcast! It's Sean Corse of Famicom Dojo and Two Boobs Watch the Tube fame, here in the spirit of Nerd & Tie unification. This episode we're looking at the Unification trilogy, a multi-part story that spans multiple Star Trek series and over 800 years! First up, Picard and Data go to Romulus to hunt down Spock, who might have turned traitor! We also have Riker chatting up a multi-armed widow and a junkyard guy who has way too many face-folds. Then, we fast forward to Discovery in their grimdark future era and while unifying the Romulans and Vulcans is a good thing, this is actually still all about Michael. Oh, and Tilly, take the damn job already! 00:05:43 What non-Star Trek things we've been enjoying: House of the Dragon Season Two, Paddington 2, Taskmaster New Zealand 00:21:30 Star Trek: The Next Generation “Unification I & II” 01:13:26 Star Trek: Discovery “Unification III” Talking points include: Three Kingdoms, Third Doctor, Farscape, Sean paying for Twitter, Famicom Dojo, Two Boobs Watch the Tube, Quantum Leap (old and new), A World of Ice & Fire, the old Indiana Jones video game, Tom Bombadil, lengthy definitions of “Twee”, Ted Lasso, Kate Fox's Watching the English, Taskmaster New Zealand, Americans understanding Vic Reeves, Adam Adamant, Bono's Vertigo Comics look, Miles is coming for David Tennant, Actually liking a U2 track, our threat of a Lost podcast, the guy played by Cameron from Ferris Bueller's Day Off (also from Bunheads), some X-Men level convoluted BS, Come On Eileen, Romulan retirement plans, sleazy space bars, Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Riker deepfakes, are Bones and Spock married? I never truly know where they'll end up and I enjoy that mystery.”With “Hold Me,” Nikena is most proud of her ability to step out of her comfort zone.“I let the song unfold naturally. I allowed myself to have fun and release myexpectations, even though I'm often very critical of my work. I'm constantly challengingmyself.”Nikena's musical story starts in her native country of Jamaica at the age of 11. One dayshe was sitting in her classroom and the newspaper was delivered, and in one sectionthere was a photograph of Aaliyah with some of her song lyrics.“I thought she was so beautiful,” Nikena said. “This was my first time being exposed toan R&B singer and music. I thought, one day I want to have a song and do somethinglike her.”Soon after, she moved to Brooklyn where her love for music continued to blossom. Sheparticipated in talent shows and singing in choirs as she grew up. For fun, she wouldjust go to the library on the weekends and print out lyrics to music from artists likeBrandy, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera to practice.Nikena became a nurse after college, but her desire to make music was unwavering. Atthis point she was writing and singing constantly, and this when inspiration hit.“One day, I wrote a song outside a laundromat,” she explained. “It was a hot summerday and having just ended a relationship, I wanted to escape the sadness I felt at thetime. I began to think of what I could do to get out of the mindset I was in. I decided towrite a song, not about how I was feeling in the moment, but the complete opposite. SoI started to imagine a romantic escape with a future partner by waterfalls in Jamaica. Amelody came to mind and that's how ‘Water' the first song I ever released came to be.”Shortly after “Water” was written, she had a realization that music was a direction thatshe needed to take. She had an epiphany that was reinforced during an encounter witha woman she was introducing herself to at work. The woman complimented Nikena onher great speaking voice and asked if she was a singer. Nikena mentioned her song“Water,” and the woman encouraged her to go and record it.This was 2019 and Nikena has been in the studio ever since. Nikena loves the processand everything involved, from recording to doing open mics and shows. Since she started she has recorded eight songs and released six, but she has plentymore to go.Nikena is inspired by life experiences and says she 'loves everything about love.' Sheenjoys writing about love and even heartbreak. Whenever she faces a situation, sheturns it into a song. She is also influenced by her Jamaican culture, infusing Caribbean rhythm into hersounds. Nikena added that the music video also displayed her culture through thedancing and attire. “I try to incorporate my culture into my work, even in the smallest ways,” she said.Nikena mentioned that her goal is for people around the world to hear her music. "Iwant people to enjoy my music as much as I do and for them to join me on my journey.”Be sure to check out “Hold Me” and the music of Nikena, available on all platforms.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

Can human connection and dignity survive in a profit-driven healthcare system? On this episode of "Love Conquers Alz," we are joined by the talented artist and filmmaker Teace Snyder, who introduces his thought-provoking film "Hold Me." The film explores the emotionally charged and controversial topic of voluntary euthanasia, focusing on a woman whose job is to comfort individuals in their final moments. Teace shares the poignant inspiration behind the film, highlighting the ambiguous professional role of a "holder" and how the film raises essential questions about human connection, grief, and end-of-life care. Our conversation with Snyder sheds light on the delicate balance between personal choice and ethical implications in these profound moments. Our discussion expands to the broader issues of systemic neglect and the isolating experiences of the elderly and sick in our healthcare system, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We draw parallels to solitary confinement and critique the pervasive influence of money in healthcare, particularly within the hospice system. Through a candid examination of systemic corruption and the hidden influence of the nursing home lobby, we aim to inspire grassroots movements and honest conversations. The writer and director of “Hold Me”, Teace Snyder, returns to give us the backstory on the making of his film, and why the topic of assisted suicide has become a focal point of an unusual push coming from the Canadian government in the form of Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID). The movie shows the massive shortcomings of the healthcare industry in the West, and how life-saving decisions are being made based on the way the system was designed. If the medical industry wasn't bad enough, the government bureaucracy that is laid on top works to smother any hope of long-term care for those in need. It creates a situation in which sick people are forced to consider cheaper ways to die.

We're down to eight great comeback songs; which ones will join the Do Call It A Comeback season's Final Four? We're quoting Wayne's World, we're putting things in plaid place out of eight, we're remembering upsetting Beatles gifts, we're adding salt to temp tracks, and we're wondering why it so often seemed like nobody cared about Laura Branigan's reputation. Transmitting live-to-tape from the floor of the Utah legislature while on a date with Bonnie Raitt, it's Mark And Sarah Talk About Songs! Our intro is an LL Byrne J mash-up, and our outro is by Squeeze. For more information/to become a patron of the show, visit patreon.com/mastas. SHOW NOTES Not sure what's going on here? 1993 could be considered as one of the most important years in the history of Pearl Jam. Vs. sold over a million copies in a week, their popularity was skyrocketing to unprecedented heights where mainstream news sources like TIME Magazine wanted in on the hype. Believe it or not, we haven't dabbled in many 1993 shows on this podcast. That's why this entire month is dedicated to the tour year where we'll talk about some great shows that may get overlooked next to the all-timers such as Indio, Mudfest and others. This episode will take us to Ed's hometown in San Diego for the second of a two night stint that displayed the power and authenticity of the band in their sophomore year. A lot of the conversation here will be about Dave A and how comfortable he felt behind the kit during this time period. His heavy, bombastic style brought even more power and ferocity to the songs that had already claimed that identity. But he also made a song such as Release feel like a triumphant, exhilarating live experience that elevated every band member to match his intensity. The big story of this show comes within one of the most polished improv performances they'd ever attempt with a song that is known as Hold Me. We'll get into a deep discussion on how locked in the band was at this time that they were able to make these improvs feel like well rehearsed songs that could've been confused as b-sides. Porch and Once are also major highlights of this show to tune in for. Our Gear Guru segments this week feature Javier getting into whether Stone is using a Fuzz Pedal on Jeremy, how electric guitar works for a song like Small Town and what made the improv come all together to feel complete. Javier has a brand new single out called La Distancia under the artist name Panamericana. You can find the song on Apple Music and Spotify streaming platforms. Please go check it out! The story of Fleetwood Mac is an oft-told rock n' roll tale: British blues-rock band sells poorly until two Americans join, bringing California vibes and lots of drama. Everybody fights, cheats, drugs, and boozes. Out pops Rumours and tons of hits. It's more complicated than that. Those two Americans—Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham—got all the media coverage and wrote many great songs. But the quiet lady behind the keyboards, Christine McVie, actually wrote more of the hits: “Don't Stop.” “Say You Love Me.” “Hold Me.” “Little Lies.” “Everywhere.” They were all Christine compositions. Join Chris Molanphy as he remembers Christine McVie, who died in late 2022 at age 79, and restores her rightful place as the glue that held Fleetwood Mac together. Podcast production by Kevin Bendis.
