The incredible work of a nurse that inspired a hit charity song and global humanitarian effort to feed starving people in Africa is remembered in our latest podcast episode. On the 40th anniversary of the formation of charity superstar group Band Aid, Nursing Standard talks to the nurse who helped prompt the cultural phenomenon led by musician Sir Bob Geldof.Dr Dame Claire Bertschinger was working for the Red Cross in Ethiopia in 1984 when she was featured in a BBC news broadcast about the devastating drought.Journalist Michael Buerk described the biblical famine he was witnessing as the ‘closest thing to hell on earth'.Thousands of people had already died and seven million were threatened with starvation in the war-torn country.Dame Claire tells journalist Erin Dean how she was running a feeding station where hundreds of women brought their starving babies each day.‘There were just thousands of people starving, hungry, wearing tatters, not even clothes, just rags,' she says. ‘There was insufficient food for everyone. It was the most horrendous thing you can imagine.'There were few resources available, and Dame Claire had to choose who would be fed and saved. One day she went out to select the 60 or 70 children they had food for that day – and found there were more than a thousand waiting outside. The BBC footage prompted musicians to launch Band Aid, and the recording of charity single Do They Know It's Christmas? It featured some of the most famous musical stars in the world at that time, including George Michael, Bono, Boy George and Sting. The song was also performed at a charity concert, Live Aid, on 13 July 1985, which raised more than £100 million for famine relief in Ethiopia.Dame Claire describes how she had little idea what was going on with the fundraising at the time – but it did have a rapid impact on the care available in Ethiopia. She reflects in the podcast on her experiences in Ethiopia and other countries, the impact it has had on her, the legacy of Band Aid, and what she has learned through her varied career. For more episodes of the Nursing Standard podcast, visit rcni.com/podcast Hosted on Acast. Irritability teetering on unexpected rage, feeling physically and mentally exhausted and down - and like the only option is to flee work?Is this the consequence of workplace pressures … or could it (or also) be the perimenopause? The perimenopause - the phase when women are experiencing menopausal symptoms but are still having periods – is the subject of this episode of the podcast. Our guest is Katharine Gale, consultant nurse in women's health and menopause and director of Fluxstate, which provides care for women going through the menopause and training for workplaces. Nine out of 10 nurses are women and more than a third are aged 41 to 55, which means a significant proportion of the workforce are likely to be going through the perimenopause right now.Ms Gale talks about the impact that the perimenopause can have on nurses and their mental health, the lack of support many find, and how this is causing nurses to leave their jobs. ‘I hear from nurses who are quitting because they feel they have made a mistake or are not good at their job,' she says. She tells journalist and podcast host Erin Dean where nurses can get support and offers advice to nursing managers on supporting their staff through this phase.‘They do not need to be an expert,' says Ms Gale about managers. ‘Come from a place of empathy and compassion. Are you missing out on money that you could reclaim from the tax office? Employed nurses and other members of the nursing team can claim a refund from HM Revenue and Customs on many work-related expenses. This includes for costs around washing uniforms if employers don't offer this service, for professional fees, union subscriptions and for journals such as Nursing Standard, and also for mileage if not covered by employers. In this episode, Clare Merrills, a spokesperson for the HMRC, explains what nurses can claim and how to go about getting it back. With the average claim for work-related expenses coming to £125 per tax year, it is well worth doing, she says. But too many people use an agent to make their claim who can take big cuts from payments awarded. These companies can take 50% or more from the sum that nurses are entitled too, HMRC says. Ms Merrills tells journalist and podcast host Erin Dean it is simple for nurses to claim themselves and explains how individuals can go about doing it. ‘It's highly likely you are entitled to a claim this extra allowance and it is really straightforward to do it,' she says. ‘If you're entitled to it, get it in your pocket.'For more episodes of the Nursing Standard podcast, visit rcni.com/podcast Hosted on Acast. What do nurses need to know about tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), which has recently arrived in the UK? Spread by the bite of an infected tick, TBEV can lead to a spectrum of illness including meningitis and encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and is potentially lethal. This episode hears from Sylviane Defres, a consultant in infectious diseases at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and a senior clinical lecturer at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Dr Defres tells interviewer journalist Erin Dean about the signs and symptoms nurses should be looking out for and how the illness presents and develops. They discuss the areas that are higher risk in the UK with more infected ticks and what is known about the spread of the virus in the UK. The importance of public health advice from nurses to protect people from getting bitten by ticks and the availability of a vaccine is also covered. Dr Defres also shares her top three tips for nurses on TBEV: Be aware of the importance of advice on avoiding tick bites as this can protect from TBEV and other tick-borne illness. Be vigilant and consider the possibility of TBEV if seeing a patient with relevant symptoms. Ask them if they have been outside in grassy areas working or enjoying the countryside. Refer on and seek specialist advice when a patient has possible symptoms which cause concern, especially neurological ones. Patients with neurological signs should be referred to hospital as an emergency. For more episodes of the Nursing Standard podcast, visit rcni.com/podcast Hosted on Acast. How can you make your money stretch a bit further, plan for retirement and feel in control of your finances? Times are tough financially for many nurses at the moment, with pay not rising as fast as the rocketing cost of living. This episode hears from money mentor for women and NHS GP Nikki Ramskill who shares information on how nurses can get to grips with their money and make it work for them better. Known as the Female Money Doctor, Dr Ramskill is on a mission to improve women's money management skills. She advises knowing exactly what money is coming in and out, how to reduce unnecessary costs and check pension statements to fully understand the current financial situation. She tells podcast host health journalist Erin Dean that nurses should consider expanding their horizons outside of the NHS to earn more, and consider ‘side-hustles' that can bring in extra money. Nurses need to try as hard as possible not to come out of the NHS pension as it is such a good plan, she says. ‘Unfortunately, what you are doing is robbing your future self,' she says. ‘Women have already got a massive gap in their pensions.' Dr Ramskill shares her four top tips with nurses: Know your numbers. Get clarity on where your money is going and look at your NHS and state pension statementsReview your expenses regularly to get rid of unnecessary costsDon't assume that someone else will do a better job than you on your financesKnow your worth – think about making more money, potentially outside the NHS. You may have outgrown your old branding and logo, or you may want to evolve to attract a new Ideal customer avatar. Whatever the reason, rebranding can give your business the boost it needs to create new growth. From a design perspective, it's important that your website and brand mark stay current. So some reasons to rebrand would include:Updating an outdated website, so that your potential customers get excited about your product or service when they land on your website.Updating your logo if it's outdated or not aligned with your current products or services. One of the benefits of rebranding is creating an overall more consistent look and feel for your brand. So maybe it's just taking a look at your social media profiles, and updating your imagery and graphics to create a more unified look so that your brand becomes more recognizable. For example, I recently updated my Pictonat Photography website by refreshing the theme and how the colour palette is used and it felt amazing, more aligned to how I want to show upRebranding really breathes new life into your business. Something as simple as updating your logo and website can get you excited about your business again and when you're excited your customers will feel your excitement and want to engage with your brand. They will also feel part of your journey and more connected with your brand. You can even start small by updating the images on your website and improving your content strategy . Even this can help your business feel fresh and new.If you are going to rebrand you should also go deep into your ideal client avatar. Who gets you excited about your business and serving? How do you differentiate yourself from the competition? And also your why , why do you do what you do? What difference are you trying to make in the lives of others.Tune into the full episode to learn more about the strategies for successfully rebranding along with examples of entrepreneurs who have successfully refreshed and rebranded their business.Links mentioned in the episode:Sunrise Brand Collective courses on-demand: https://sunrise-brand-studio.mykajabi.com/store?preview_theme_id=3112015Follow the team at Sunrise Brand Studio on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/sunrisebrandstudio/https://www.instagram.com/pictonatbrandingcreative/https://www.instagram.com/erindeanwilliams/Join our free private Sunrise Brand Collective Facebook group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/sunrisebrandcollective
Hello friends and welcome to another episode of the Sunrise Brand Collective, we are your hosts Erin Williams and Nathalie Amlani and we are so excited to wrap up our year of podcasts with a talk on Resilience in Business. If 2020 has taught us anything, it's how to be resilient in the face of adversity and discomfort. We've learned that we can't control everything and to focus on the things that we can control. Here are Nathalie's thoughts on what keeps her going during hard times:Getting into massive action has helped us get through these difficult times. Examples - brand strategy, project management.Personal development, expanded network, attending Sabrina Greer's mastermind, diving deeper into spirituality and intuition. Practicing the miracle morning routine.Evolving, updating our competency in areas of personal growth and development, learning from others how to deal with adversity, and challenge our thinking.Asking for help from coaches and people in our network. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable and ask for help, you are giving people the opportunity to serve which helps them grow.Being flexible and making adjustments to accommodate our families and the new restrictions. Learning how to quickly pivot and adjust, and not be complacent.Expanding our network by joining groups, forums, and masterminds. How to have a growth and abundance mindset so there's always room for growth. There always enough time, productivity and time management.Having the courage to speak our truth and be open and honest with the people in your life, including business partners, friends and family.Looking back, this year has given us an opportunity to explore our passions and partnership with one another even deeper. We are grateful for this discomfort because it has helped us grow not just as individuals but also as business owners. Also know that you're not alone, there is always someone willing to help you just have to ask. Sometimes things have to get out of balance to get back into balance.Celebrating wins no matter how big or small are still wins and deserve to be celebrated! Today we dive into website strategy and why a website is one of the most effective ways for a small business to stand out in a busy online space - and where to begin. These key insights are gathered from co-host Erin Dean Williams, a Creative Director and User Experience Designer with over 10 years of experience designing websites and brands for both large corporations and smaller start ups.Erin shares the top five reasons why a website helps businesses stand out in a busy online space:1. Social Media Platforms Own Your Content.I'm not saying don't leverage your social media properties but we must remember that these platforms own your content and decide when and how to share it. You are ultimately creating content for them, helping their bottom lines and platforms shine. The exposure can be great but I would argue it should not take priority over your own website.2. Your Website Gives you Control. You decide the user experience, narrative, and messaging your potential customers see. Your website content, such as blogs and other resources, bring people to your website by increasing your SEO (helping you get found through Google searches) and building your authority and credibility. You can create offers, discounts, and content that bring value to your audience and drive sales.3. Your Website Builds Your Mailing List. They say people have to come in contact with a brand at least 7x before buying or engaging with their services. Having a great lead magnet or newsletter opt-in offer will help you build your email list, and by leveraging email marketing, you can share valuable content and offers through email keeping you and your brand top of mind.4. A Good Website Works for You.Creating a website with a strong content strategy will answer basic questions about your service offerings, brand and business ethos, and products 24 hours a day! Structuring your content properly will help deflect unnecessary calls and emails by helping people independently find the answers they are looking for online.5. A Website Is Expected.People expect you to have a website and when you don't they will most likely do business with your competitor who does.Listen to the full episode to learn more about website strategy and how to get started with building a website that is best for your business goals. Your online presence is your digital ID and we believe that it is the foundation that must be set up properly in order for a business to grow.Learn more about creating your own website by joining the Sunrise Online Brand Booster Mastermind that kicks off on September 15th.
