Welcome to a VERY SPECIAL EPISODE of Sporadically Board. AireCon NW has just ended, and while Dan drove home with nary a care, Mike braved the horrors of British Airways and the Manchester Airport to eventually get home to the US. His luggage arrived days later. While at AireCon, Dan put together a cracking quiz show where Mike, Zee and Camilla (from The Dice Tower) represented the United States against the entire UK represented by Dan's ridiculous questions and the audience. This battle of cultural knowledge was as hard fought and underhanded as you can imagine. WHO answered the diabolical questions the best? WHAT was Mike doing with a slide whistle? WHERE were the Yorkshire puddings? WHEN will we be allowed to re-enter the UK? All of these questions answered and more on this SPECIAL LIVE EPISODE of Sporadically Board!

I have attended quite a few different board game events in my time. I've been visiting conventions in Germany and the United Kingdom as a paying visitor, a member of the press as well as part of a demo team. From the more sedate and gaming-focussed AireCon to the crazily busy more business-focussed Essen Spiel and various exhibitions, shows, conventions or whatever you want to call them somewhere in between. So if you're planning to attend a board game event yourself and want to make the most of your experience, here are some tips that come from my own experience and that I hope you will find useful. Airecon was absolutely amazing, and we have many gifts we've brought back for you, including Nidhoggr Mead, uh, mead, and Honey Badger Games tea, accessible character sheets and Roll Table for 2 from Fights and Fancy, and the short, strategic, simple, and sneaky Ominoes from YAY Games. But that's not it, oh no! There's also jumping aboard the space bus and tearing through the universe in Wormholes from AEG, and deducing the machinations of a mastermind in Tragedy Looper: New Tragedies from WizKids Games, as well as the perfect little pub game - Kluster from Borderline Editions (via Games Crusade). Plus, miracles. 00:00 - Warning: lots and lots of Airecon chat ahead. 02:00 - Nidhoggr Mead. 09:22 - Tea from Honey Badger Games. 12:30 - Accessible character sheets and Roll Table for 2 from Fights and Fancy. 15:53 - Ominoes from YAY Games. 26:02 - Oh no! We're going to have to play Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition, aren't we? 30:13 - The First Miracle of Airecon. 34:53 - The Second Miracle of Airecon. 38:20 - Wormholes from AEG. 45:50 - Kluster from Borderline Editions (thanks to Games Crusade for showing us it). 50:02 - Tragedy Looper: New Tragedies from WizKids Games. Warning: This podcast contains strong language and adult content Andy has been to Airecon, so not only has he got a truck full of board games to talk about, he's also got lots of dirty street food to discuss, including the lowdown on Race to the Raft, Heat and the new game from Dávid Turczi (aka Big Davey T). Ghibli-esque slice of life Shin chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation The Endless Seven-Day Journey is Millennium Kitchen's nostalgic return to Boku no Natsuyasumi, and Mada is all about discovering the hidden game within just as much as it's about hand management, risk taking, and prickly pears. Kids go hunting for ghosts in Joe Cornish's very bingeable Lockwood & Co. that has sharply-written dialogue throughout its eight episodes of creepy horror, and we're off to Airecon and have some convention advice for anyone that'll listen. I feel that the board game hobby is great and that our community is wonderful. Board games bring like-minded people together. I know, nothing is ever perfect and we can't ignore the bad actors, but on the whole, board game people, if I may address you all this way, are great folk. Playing board games is my happy place and I feel very much at home whenever I see board games. My last board game convention was Airecon 2020 and it was the last event of its kind in the UK - and as it turned out, there wasn't going to be another in-person UK board game convention until 2021. It was a wonderful event, even though everything felt weird. Nobody was sure whether to shake hands or not. The special guests who had flown in from the USA weren't even sure if they would be able to get back home. Luckily, they did make it back safely and it wasn't long until the UK went into full lockdown. So, I was keenly looking forward to Airecon 2022, the first board game convention I was happy to attend after a two-year break.
