Here's a breakdown of the articles we've featured in this podcast: (1) Our feature spotlight today is from Minidoka County where Mike Wilkins farms with his family. Of all the jobs on the farm, Wilkins says his favorite is operating the sugarbeet digger. Freelancer Julia McCarthy tells us his story. (2) As water becomes ever more valuable to Idaho, a group of ag producers consistently evaluate proposed increases to help legislators, the public and the Public Utilities Commission understand what's at stake for irrigators. Learn more about the Idaho Irrigation Pumpers Association. (3) Our next guest knows all things market related – Clark Johnston. Well, he'd probably argue that he doesn't know ALL things, but studying historical trends can certainly inform tomorrows choices – in any market. The real difficulty, Clark says, is remaining calm through turbulent times. (4) “Shoeboxes and coffee cans” pretty well sums up humorist Michele Coleman's column. Where else would you find a pinewood derby car pushed up against two gift cards to the local farm supply store and business cards from tractor salesmen but a farmer's pocket and keepsake cleanout?
Dairy farmer, Mike Bermingham, joins Emma-Louise Coffey on this week's Dairy Edge podcast with an update on the grazing and calving season during February, and looks forward to the remainder of the first grazing rotation. On 1st March, Mike had 32% of the farm grazed and an average farm cover of 1,000 kg /ha. Mike intends on maintaining a high level of grazed grass in the diet in March, supplementing with 4 kg meal and high quality baled silage if farm cover dips below target. Mike had a significant issue with milk fever 2 years ago, explaining cows were over-conditioned, silage was high quality and he has crossbred cows who are predisposed to milk fever. Mike has taken proactive steps to reduce cases including BCS at dry off, mineral analysis on silage, restricting silage intake and feeding straw once per week. Michael Parkot is a self proclaimed accidental agricultural entrepreneur. While pursuing a career in healthcare he noticed that despite the new advances in medicine, people are sicker than ever; he felt as though food has more of an impact than anyone is willing to admit. In starting his farm, he found a passion, drive and desire to produce ethical, nutrient dense, superb food products. After a surprise investment grant from Ignite Buffalo via 43 North, Always Something Farm and Mike are off and running, supplying top local restaurants, home consumers, and trying to build a local food system supporting other farmers. Now that the farm has grown from a passion project to business with employees he's finding and addressing the pitfalls of a new business owner, learning on the fly, and truly discovering how accurate the phrase Always Something fits entrepreneurial life.
Mike Wagner began his dream of owning a rice farm 35 years ago during a college class. Our guest today is Mike Dickson, the Fit Farmer from Big Pond Farm in North Carolina. Today we’ll discuss how Mike went from the fitness industry to farming, why ducks are more fun than chickens, how to improve your health and fitness, and so much more. Shownotes: Big Pond farm is 10 acres but uses about 2 acres of it, with 1 acre as the Pond and 1/3 acre market garden. They also raise chickens, ducks, and even a goose! They employee Australian shepherds to protect the poultry and keep deer away from the garden. Mike initially didn’t plan on raising ducks, but they have become a favorite on the operation. Raising ducks versus chickens depends on your circumstances, but for Mike’s farm ducks are best. Primary benefits of ducks on Big Pond Farm: They are consistent egg layers (even in Winter), they shepherd easier to where you need them to go, and most of all, they are more entertaining. Big Pond Farm raises Khaki Campbell ducks primarily because they are consistent egg layers (laying 200 eggs per year). Mike’s background is from nutrition, physical training, and professional bodybuilding.
