Happy Chinese New Year! This week, while I'm decompressing from 10 days in the Alps, my friends at the Asia Society of Switzerland have graciously offered to let me share a podcast recorded just after the U.S. presidential election in November at their annual State of Asia event. "The State of China" features three terrific guests: Wang Qing (王卿), the host of the popular Chinese podcast "The Weirdo" (不合时宜), Zichen Wang of the Center for China and Globalization, and Adam Tooze, one of the truly great public intellectuals of our time. It's all skillfully moderated by the South China Morning Post's Europe editor, Finbarr Bermingham, and it covers a lot of ground. I'll be back next week in conversation with my dear friend Jeremy Goldkorn, and we'll be asking (and answering) the big question — Are we in the middle of a narrative shift on China?May the Year of the Snake be prosperous and full of happiness and success for all you Sinica listeners!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

My guest today is a legend of Club Med and he worked for them from 1992 to 2006. I had the SUPREME pleasure of working with him during my first season during the summer of 1994 in Turks and Caicos (and two other villages- Columbus Isle & Cancun). He started playing hockey at 3 years old and learned to barefoot in a Speedo (a Speedo?). His first season was at the opening of Club Med Columbus Isle in 1992 as a Bar. G.O. despite never having taken a bartending course and we are going to ask him all about that and so much more. Still don't know who I'm talking about? It is the one, the only, the man, the myth, the living legend, from Montreal, Quebec, Freddy Bermingham, AKA, "El Fuego"! Freddy's connection to Club Med started with his cousin who was a Hostess G.O. at the opening of Club Med Cancun! Freddy worked in the Club Med resorts such as Martinique, Cancun, Playa Blanca, Phuket, Kemer, and Paradise Island, to name just a few. On this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, Senior Editor Phil Keren speaks with Jennifer Bermingham, Director of Golf Programming for Invited, and a PGA/LPGA member. June is Women's Golf Month. Invited, the leading owner-operator of private golf and country clubs, and city clubs in North America, has partnered with the LPGA Foundation to celebrate Women's Golf Month. Invited has launched numerous women's golf programs at 120 of its clubs in North America. Bermingham discusses the programs that Invited and the LPGA offer to bring more women to golf. The golf boom during the COVID-19 pandemic gave rise to many positive trends in the game, including the fact that more women than ever are playing golf. Today, according to the 2024 National Golf Foundation report, females account for 26% of on-course participants – the highest proportion on record. Phil and Editor-In-Chief Rob Thomas also talked about large-scale projects happening at three different clubs around the country. Members of Great Hills Country Club in Austin, Texas recently approved a $22.3 million golf course and clubhouse enhancement project. This plan includes replacing the 50-year-old irrigation system and establishing a Task Force on Golf Course Sustainability and Playability to develop a long-term plan for the golf course. Greens, bunkers and the practice facility will be upgraded. Conceptual plans are also in place to create a quiet dining space, a casual family bistro, a new outdoor bar and a children's playscape area. Rob and Phil also highlighted plans for a $35 million renovation of the 46,000-sq.-ft. clubhouse at Glenmoor Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo. The expansion will increase the clubhouse footprint by approximately 10,000 sq. ft. Glenmoor will build a new pro shop, expand its fitness center, add pickleball courts and include structural upgrades. This project is part of a broader trend at Glenmoor, such as a $4 million pool and patio remodel in 2019 and an $8 million golf course renovation, that included a new irrigation system and updated greens, in 2023. King's North at Myrtle Beach (S.C.) National closed earlier this month to begin a comprehensive, two-part, two-year renovation project. Phase one, which will focus entirely on the front nine, includes renovating and restoring the greens, and installing Capillary Concrete bunker liners throughout the layout.

Breeda Bermingham is an award-winning menopause coach on a mission to change the global story for menopausal and midlife women. Breeda coaches women individually and in group settings focusing on symptom management along with the positive aspects of menopause transition. She is a staunch believer that the taboo around menopause continues to limit and disempower women in their middle years, and needs to be removed in order to enable women to thrive. She's also the best-selling author of “Midlife Women Rock - A Menopause Story for a New Generation.” We talk about how our generation is finally bringing about the tipping point for societal change to break through the shame, stigma, and taboo surrounding menopause. Back in 1910, the average age of reaching menopause was 56, with an average life expectancy of 58, so it's clear to see where the correlation between ‘old age' and menopause is rooted - but now with many of us spending upwards of 30 years post-menopause, that narrative is both inaccurate and damaging. Midlife women have so much to offer in terms of their creativity and their potential for leadership. Breeda and her fellow campaigners have succeeded in bringing the topic of menopause mainstream in Ireland with the launch in October 2022 of the nationwide education and awareness campaign which resulted from the government's 2019 Women's Health Taskforce. Since then much has changed globally of course around the narrative, with more of us sharing our stories. That said, we still have a long way to go in breaking taboos - most critically in the workplace - where a few courageous voices sharing their experiences can make a huge difference to creating a culture where the topic is as normalized as any other life transition. Breeda is leading the way in telling a new, more positive story about the second half of women's lives, one where our changing hormones allow us to recalibrate, refocus, and tap into our full power. You can find Breeda at https://midlifewomenrockproject.com/ and her book at https://midlifewomenrockproject.com/book/ Don't forget to follow us over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/middlingalong_podcast/ or find out more/listen to past episodes/subscribe to the newsletter at https://middlingalong.com It would mean so much if you'd subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts to share the love! Diversion is a key tool for supporting youth outside of the formal justice system. When done well, it supports public safety and youth accountability while involving victims and stakeholders in the decision-making process. In this episode, Robert (Bob) Bermingham delivers his first-hand account on how Fairfax County, Virginia implemented and sustained successful diversion practices and offers takeaways for how other jurisdictions can do the same. The outcomes achieved in Fairfax County are impactful, including decreased court dockets, reduced recidivism, and increased collaboration amongst stakeholders.
James Bermingham is responsible for delivering Virgin Hotel's global growth, operational excellence, multi-award-winning customer experience, and unique culture. But where did he get his start? Well, James began his career in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland, followed by ten years in London, England, including executive roles with ITT Sheraton Corporation and the Luxury Collection. Why is it that so many of us default to “Yes,” even when we're depleted and at wit's end? My guest on this episode of She Turned Entrepreneur is highlighting ways in which stressed-out moms can do a reset to refresh not only their spirits but the lives of those around them. Kelly Bermingham, founder of The Motherhood Mentorship Program, shares insights that improve quality of life with a minimum of muss and fuss – because who has time for that? At the heart of her program is Kelly's belief that we need to stop pretending and throw off societal expectations that are inauthentic. It's okay – unavoidable really – if we can't be all things to all people at all times. We can create a mold for ourselves that matches what truly matters most, if we commit to doing the work of getting honest and defining exactly what those core values are. Kelly, who has been both a mom and a career educator, is on a mission to help women on the run tune into their inner knowing. And, on the practical side, she also helps them create simple, practical life systems so they can stress less and enjoy the journey more. A veteran of 22 years as an educator with a track record as a direct sales entrepreneur, Kelly has traversed midlife and is here to send a message back to women just starting to navigate the insane sprint that life can be when we're juggling jobs, kids, relationships and the daily challenge to keep the domestic machine chugging along on time. She shares how she developed her online course and why the one-to-one coaching element is so fulfilling. The episode wraps with some great recommended reading and a shout-out for the importance of improving and supporting education in our communities and across the nation. Are you a stressed mama? If so, you're not alone. Click here to join The Motherhood and learn more about Kelly and her amazing platform! Click here to listen to, rate and review this or previous She Turned Entrepreneur episodes. Here are key takeaways from the conversation:· Personal losses can serve as an invitation to reconsider – and reset – core priorities.· Don't wait until midlife to confront those midlife crisis questions. Start asking now!· The Power of No: It may not come easily, but women must find ways to set boundaries.· Just starting out? Google research is your friend. There are abundant free resources out there for aspiring entrepreneurs of all kinds.· The online hivemind can be a rich source of support and information. Have a question about growing your business? Put it out to your social media community. Here's a quick look into the episode:· Kelly shares the path she took into a career in technical education and eventually an entrepreneurial venture in direct sales to make some extra $$. · A series of losses within a short timeframe prompted Kelly to reconsider her life and very intentionally prioritize around the things most important to her and her family.· Kelly grew a practice around her observation that women were under intensive – and unrealistic – pressure to do it all and be everything.· Kelly shares some practices that help women in The Motherhood get clarity:o Define your core values to determine what kind of life you want to live.o Identify where your hours are going and how it aligns with your mission.o Come up with simple systems that protect time and improve quality of life.o Develop a self-care practice that integrates quiet moments throughout the day.· The biggest stressors women are facing:o Work.o Maintaining the home.· The single most effective thing women can do to relieve stress? Learn to set boundaries and to say no when necessary.· About how Kelly developed her program:o She networked and asked questions of women who had already established businesses.o She grew her venture organically, through online research and posting on social media channels.o Drawing from her own life, strengths and limits, Kelly developed an online course that busy women could tackle in increments. o She added a one-to-one element to personalize her coaching.o The process of self-reflection – and learning – was and is ongoing.· What's next for Kelly? Finding a way to advocate for kids by helping to improve our troubled educational system, which she had a front-row seat as a teacher.· Recommended Reading:o "Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies About Who You Are So You Can Become Who You Were Meant To Be," by Rachel Hollis.

SCMP Europe correspondent Finbarr Bermingham analyses the fallout of the meeting between the EU senior leadership and China’s Li Keqiang and Xi Jinping, labelled a ‘dialogue of the deaf’ by one attendee. While Beijing refuses to discuss the Ukraine war or China’s state media amplifying alleged Russian disinformation and war crimes denials, Bermingham reveals the US is actively modelling the types of sanctions employed against Russia for use on China’s financial system. In this episode, Nellie and Kelly travel through parenthood in a rear-view mirror. Kelly has already raised her son now and realized there were some things she would have done differently if she were to do it again. She has turned this into a passion for moms in helping them destress, build healthy boundaries, and show up as their authentic selves. Dairy farmer, Mike Bermingham, joins Emma-Louise Coffey on this week's Dairy Edge podcast with an update on the grazing and calving season during February, and looks forward to the remainder of the first grazing rotation. On 1st March, Mike had 32% of the farm grazed and an average farm cover of 1,000 kg /ha. Mike intends on maintaining a high level of grazed grass in the diet in March, supplementing with 4 kg meal and high quality baled silage if farm cover dips below target. Mike had a significant issue with milk fever 2 years ago, explaining cows were over-conditioned, silage was high quality and he has crossbred cows who are predisposed to milk fever. Mike has taken proactive steps to reduce cases including BCS at dry off, mineral analysis on silage, restricting silage intake and feeding straw once per week.
