If Lindsay Clancy is convicted of first-degree murder, a Massachusetts judge has no room to weigh in on her sentence at all. The charge carries mandatory life without parole. Not the illness, not the medication, not the wheelchair, not a single fact about who she was before January 24, 2023, when Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan died at their Duxbury, Massachusetts home. The judge doesn't get a say. Neither does the jury, once they've reached that verdict. Lindsay is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. She's a former labor and delivery nurse. Prosecutors say roughly three months before the killings, she typed something about her older children into her phone, a note a prosecutor later read aloud in court. The defense says she'd been begging the medical system for help for weeks and was handed prescriptions instead. She's permanently paralyzed after going out a second-story window the night her children died. The other possible outcome isn't freedom either. A finding of not criminally responsible sends her to a locked state psychiatric hospital with periodic reviews to determine whether she can ever safely return to a community. She's already been in state custody since 2023. Two rigid outcomes, and nothing in between since prosecutors dropped the lesser charges that once existed. Jury selection began July 20 in Plymouth Superior Court, and whichever way this goes, one number, life without parole or indefinite commitment, is the only thing waiting on the other side. Patrick Clancy is on the defense witness list. There used to be a middle ground in the Lindsay Clancy case. As of July 9, there isn't one anymore. Prosecutors dropped all three strangulation charges against Lindsay Clancy that day, calling them redundant. What that filing actually did was erase the space between the two remaining verdicts: life without parole, or not criminally responsible. No compromise. No lesser finding for the jury to land on if they're not fully convinced either way. Lindsay is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan, at their Duxbury, Massachusetts home in January 2023. She's pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. She'd checked herself into a psychiatric hospital on New Year's Eve after telling her husband she was having thoughts of hurting her children. She was discharged. Nineteen days later, the children were dead. Her attorney puts her medication count at roughly thirteen psychiatric drugs across about four months, with a dose increase and a sleepless night the day before it happened. The narrowing didn't stop there. On July 13, the judge blocked women who've survived postpartum psychosis from testifying about the condition in their own words. On July 20, the first morning of jury selection, prosecutors moved to challenge the defense's own experts, the third motion in eleven days aimed at limiting Lindsay's defense. Patrick Clancy, her husband, is on the defense witness list. He's also suing her healthcare providers and has publicly asked people to forgive her. Two jurors were seated by lunch. Everyone around Lindsay Clancy saw her getting worse. Her husband saw it and said so, directly to her doctors. The question this episode asks is simple: did the people treating her know, and if they did, why did they raise her medication instead of pulling back? She would go on to kill Cora, Dawson, and Callan, and both sides now agree on that fact — only her mental state at the time is in dispute.  Tony Brueski is joined by psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, author of Night Bird, to examine the treatment record behind Lindsay Clancy's ongoing murder trial in Plymouth, Massachusetts, over the deaths of her children Cora, Dawson, and Callan in Duxbury. Shavaun starts with the diagnosis problem — providers allegedly logged intrusive thoughts at the same time Lindsay was reportedly describing a commanding voice telling her to harm her kids, two clinically distinct phenomena that got blurred together. It wasn't until after the killings that a forensic evaluation confirmed Bipolar I, a diagnosis her providers had weighed but never settled on.  From there, the prescribing history: thirteen medications across four months, five different providers, and — according to the lawsuit — no coordinated review of any of it. Patrick Clancy told providers his wife was ten thousand times worse on Seroquel. They increased the dose. She called a suicide hotline and was screened out. She waited three days at McLean Hospital before seeing a doctor.  Shavaun weighs in on how much of this was preventable, what a properly coordinated psychiatric team would have caught, and where the line falls between individual error and structural failure. Her own malpractice lawsuit describes that final dose increase, paired with a night without sleep, in the hours before Cora, five, Dawson, three, and Callan, eight months, died in their Duxbury, Massachusetts home. She's pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. She'd checked herself into a psychiatric hospital on New Year's Eve after telling her husband she was having thoughts of hurting her children. She was discharged. Nineteen days later, the children were dead. Jury selection began July 20 in Plymouth Superior Court. That same morning, before a single juror was seated, prosecutors moved to challenge her defense experts, the third motion in eleven days aimed at limiting her defense. Prosecutors had already dropped all three strangulation charges on July 9, calling them redundant, a move that erased any middle ground between the two remaining verdicts: life without parole, or not criminally responsible. On July 13, the judge blocked women who've survived postpartum psychosis from testifying about the illness in their own words. That leaves the jury with paper: prescription records, a dosage change, a malpractice complaint describing exactly how the medication was mishandled. Her husband, Patrick, has said she seemed to be acting like a zombie. An outside hospital later determined she'd been overmedicated and misdiagnosed, and her nurse practitioner allegedly never responded when she reached out. Her civil lawsuit alleges that what she reported as intrusive thoughts were actually auditory hallucinations, and that the distinction never got explored. A forensic psychiatrist has since diagnosed her with Bipolar Disorder I with postpartum onset, a condition where the very antidepressants doctors prescribe can trigger psychosis. Postpartum psychosis affects roughly one to two women out of every thousand births, and there is still no standardized screening for it anywhere in the country. She was also gravely injured that night and has been paralyzed from the waist down ever since. She has never given police a statement about what happened, not once, in three and a half years. Prosecutors have their own version of that missed question. They argue other mothers who lived through postpartum psychosis or depression without harming their children prove sickness alone doesn't explain what happened. The island is uninhabited and sits roughly ten miles offshore — no shelter, no water, no signal. His friends made it back. A National Park Service ranger found him in the water two mornings later. Two examinations exist, neither released, cause and manner of death undetermined. Ben Crump is investigating for the family. PPD survivor & outpatient therapist soleowellness.com When I finally sat down to write my postpartum depression story, the words just came pouring out.  -Lindsey Disch  In this latest episode,  we meet Lindsey Disch, whose journey through Post Partum Depression or PPD casts a bright light on a condition many people still don't understand. Profiled in a prominent women's magazine,  Lindsey's “A Letter to My Daughter” essay caught my heart and my attention.  https://www.pinkchairstorytellers.com/storytellers/lindsey-disch.   Back in the day, people would see a mom who felt sad after childbirth and wave her off, saying, “she's got the baby blues,” but thanks to heightened medical protocols regarding PPD, more women are getting the help they need.  For Lindsey, that meant admission to a mental hospital during the first year of her daughter Alexa's life.   In this interview, she reveals what it was like to give birth after a complicated and unexpected pregnancy and shares the story of how ashamed and overwhelmed she was in the weeks following her daughter's birth.  “I just didn't care about anything anymore. All I wanted to do was lay in bed, and I thought this horrible feeling would never end.” It was during this time that her husband found her crying in the closet.  A certified mental health clinician herself, Lindsey knew there was something wrong with her.  She sought counseling and was prescribed medication, but nothing worked.  A trip to the ER resulted in Lindsey being admitted as an inpatient at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts (mcleanhospital.org).   Nationally recognized as the #1 psychiatric care facility in the nation, Lindsey followed the advice of her care team and received 30 rounds of ECT or Electroconvulsive Therapy.  Administered under anesthesia, ECT treatment sends small electric currents through the brain, changing its chemistry, often improving symptoms of certain mental health conditions, including severe depression. However, this treatment has side effects, including difficulty with thinking, word retrieval, and memory loss. Lindsay Clancy — a labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital — is charged with the murders of Cora, five; Dawson, three; and Callan, eight months old. She has pleaded not guilty.
