Haverhill Public Schools recently won national recognition as one of 192 districts in 38 states whose students have improved significantly faster in math than peer schools.The award called “Districts on the Rise” is a collaboration of the Harvard University Center for Education Policy Research and the Stanford University Educational Opportunity Project along with faculty at Dartmouth College. Haverhill School Superintendent Margaret Marotta talked recently about the honor on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program. She explained how the Education Scorecard is computed.“They take every school district across the country, all public school districts, and they look at their test scores, they look at their NAEP, the National Educational Progress Assessment, and they look at your standardized test scores and your attendance scores,” Marotta explained.The partnership has produced its Education Scorecard for the last four years. The most recent report analyzed national student achievement trends for approximately 35 million students in grades three to eight, from 2022 through 2025. Eleven states were not included due to data limitations.The Beverly, Braintree, Reading, Scituate and Westfield school systems also received the honor for their students' progress in math. Other Massachusetts schools honored were Cambridge, for both reading and math progress, and Duxbury, Lexington, Mansfield, Plymouth, Salem, Sharon and Weymouth for reading progress.Marotta credited both the adoption of a new math curriculum as well as the hard work of teachers in implementing it for the recognition.“We've been changing up the curriculum, trying to improve things over in the last couple of years, and it is paying off. But it was definitely our teachers and their hard work and learning curve,” Marotta said.Haverhill was also called out by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a statewide Spotlight District during a recent education conference in Washington, D.C., for its implementation of a new literacy curriculum at the high school. Specifically, DESE said, Haverhill has been effective in providing coaching to high school teachers as they introduce the new reading supports in their classrooms. The coaching has helped the teacher feel more engaged and less overwhelmed, DESE reported.Support the show

Profiled in a prominent women's magazine,  Lindsey's “A Letter to My Daughter” essay caught my heart and my attention.  https://www.pinkchairstorytellers.com/storytellers/lindsey-disch.   Back in the day, people would see a mom who felt sad after childbirth and wave her off, saying, “she's got the baby blues,” but thanks to heightened medical protocols regarding PPD, more women are getting the help they need.  For Lindsey, that meant admission to a mental hospital during the first year of her daughter Alexa's life.   In this interview, she reveals what it was like to give birth after a complicated and unexpected pregnancy and shares the story of how ashamed and overwhelmed she was in the weeks following her daughter's birth.  “I just didn't care about anything anymore. All I wanted to do was lay in bed, and I thought this horrible feeling would never end.” It was during this time that her husband found her crying in the closet.  A certified mental health clinician herself, Lindsey knew there was something wrong with her.  She sought counseling and was prescribed medication, but nothing worked.  A trip to the ER resulted in Lindsey being admitted as an inpatient at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts (mcleanhospital.org).   Nationally recognized as the #1 psychiatric care facility in the nation, Lindsey followed the advice of her care team and received 30 rounds of ECT or Electroconvulsive Therapy.  Administered under anesthesia, ECT treatment sends small electric currents through the brain, changing its chemistry, often improving symptoms of certain mental health conditions, including severe depression. However, this treatment has side effects, including difficulty with thinking, word retrieval, and memory loss. He came home with dinner. She was in the backyard. The children were in the basement.Part 1 of our five-part series on the Lindsay Clancy case begins exactly where the story begins — the night of January 24th, 2023 in Duxbury, Massachusetts — and doesn't let you leave until you understand why four more chapters are necessary to tell it right.Cora was five. Dawson was three. Callan was eight months old. Lindsay Clancy, a labor and delivery nurse at one of the most respected hospitals in the country, allegedly strangled all three children with exercise bands before attempting to take her own life. She survived. She has been paralyzed from the chest down ever since, held at Tewksbury State Hospital while her case moves toward trial.She has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege she planned every detail of that night with deliberate intent. Her defense maintains she was in a state of active psychosis, hearing command hallucinations she could not control — the result of a serious illness the medical system allegedly failed to identify or treat. On January 24th, 2023, Patrick Clancy came home to find his wife injured and his three children dead in the basement of their Duxbury, Massachusetts home. Lindsay Clancy — a labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital — is charged with the murders of Cora, five; Dawson, three; and Callan, eight months old. She has pleaded not guilty. Her trial begins July 20th, 2026.The defense says Lindsay spent months before that night desperately seeking help for a postpartum mental health crisis that was being managed with thirteen different medications across multiple providers who weren't coordinating her care. She called a crisis line. She checked into McLean Hospital. She told her husband and her mother she was having thoughts of harming the kids. Her husband called her doctors himself, told them it was urgent. Days later, her dose was raised.Prosecutors say she planned the murders — that phone searches for methods of killing, a calculated timeline for her husband's absence, and the deliberate nature of the attacks point to premeditation, not psychosis. Their expert says the medications in her system could not have caused the break the defense describes.The insanity defense is being prepared. A prosecution psychiatric evaluation is scheduled for April 10th. Her attorney has told the court she remains at daily risk of suicide. In 2018, a mother in Brockton, Latarsha Sanders, killed her two young sons while in the midst of a psychotic episode. But the tragedy didn't end with their deaths. SwimSwam spoke to Duxbury High School senior Henry Perda. Henry, who has been swimming since he was seven years old, received a heart transplant during his sophomore year of high school. The transplant took him out of school and out of his sophomore swim season, and he had to re-learn how to swim again in the lead-up to his junior season. However, as a junior he came back to help Duxbury break the school record in the 200 medley relay, splitting 21.7 on his freestyle anchor leg.
