Edward Lucas blickar framåt i försvarsfrågan. Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/hakeliuspopova. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Nya sängar i Sydafrika, hur gör man? Vi har hackat det. Landerholmsgrejen rullar vidare. I Fokus Sticket, förstås. Och I Fokus börjar också den nyväckta debatten om Bertholt Brecht, dramatikern som enligt den österrikiske kanslern Bruno Kreisky "var en skithög och inte kunde han skriva heller". The year in politics has begun with a bang, with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announcing a cabinet reshuffle that sees two big portfolios, health and transport, handed to new Ministers. But how will the new Ministers perform in their new jobs, and what did Shane Reti and Melissa Lee do wrong to lose their biggest responsibilities? Also, Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. What impact will his policies have on New Zealand and the world? To answer those questions, Rongotai MP and Green transport spokeswoman Julie Anne Genter and National's Wairarapa MP Mike Butterick joined Nick Mills for Politics Thursday. My guest today is my friend and PPT community favorite, Betsy Butterick! Betsy is a lifelong athlete who played college basketball, a coach, and communication specialist. She is known in the industry as “The Coaches' Coach”, mentoring leaders - from the boardroom to the locker room. Betsy has committed her life to helping leaders learn essential communication skills to help them better connect with the people they serve. As a communications expert and a generous teacher, she deeply understands the sociology of sports teams, and the importance of creating an optimal sports environment. More than anything, Betsy is committed to the lifelong practice of learning. If you are a coach, a leader, a parent, or around humans in general, you can learn something from Betsy. In our episode today, we chat about one of the most relevant topics in today's sports landscape: Coaching Gen Z! We cover: How to get athletes to buy-in and co-create their sports environment The challenges Gen Z faces that older generations did not. Modern coaching challenges that are causing coaches to leave their careers Simple tips to communicate with Gen Z, without sacrificing “old school values”. How psychological safety on a team impacts performance. Why strong-arming Gen Z athletes won't work, and what to do instead This episode gives coaches a new perspective and actionable tips to help them connect with their team in a way that makes the coach-athlete relationship and the team stronger. Follow Betsy: Instagram: betsy_thecoachescoach Facebook: www.facebook.com/betsbutter Website: www.betsybutterick.com Here's a glance at this episode: [1:42] Betsy talks about how catching up on reading led her to one of her newest favorite resources, “The Art of Disagreement”. She then defines ”Gen Z”. [2:50] Betsy asks coaches to finish the sentence, “Kids these days are… “ and explains what that helps her discover about a team. Lindsey and Betsy discuss the few defining challenges that Gen Z has that older generations didn't have. [6:33] How can I get Gen Z to listen to me? Why do they seem to care so much about what other people think of them? Betsy shares her perspective and explains the extreme way in which Gen Z internalizes failure. Rather than - “I failed”, it's - “I am a failure”. [9:46] Betsy shares an example of one big mistake she sees many coaches making when it comes to giving feedback to Gen Z athletes. Lindsey and Betsy discuss why many lifelong coaches are now leaving their careers because what they're doing is no longer working with this generation. [14:54] “It's not that old school values are irrelevant, I would argue they're more needed than ever. Our ability to connect with athletes today is paramount to our ability to transform them.” [16:56] Lindsey asks Betsy for a few actionable tips to give coaches who work with Gen Z. Betsy chats about the importance of co-creation and defines what that looks like. [21:00] Lindsey draws a parallel between the best practices for coaching Gen Z and the way she approaches parenting. [22:50] Betsy tells a story about working with a coach who had a sign saying “Because I Said So” mounted to the wall. [26:46] Betsy outlines the huge risk to coaches who want to strongarm their way into coaching athletes their way. The two discuss the importance of “psychological safety” in sports. [28:28] How has the attention span of Gen Z shifted, and what can we do as educators to meet them where they're at? Lindsey talks about the importance of practicing what you preach. [32:56] Betsy peels back the curtain to share the highlights and structure of her Gen Z workshops. [35:28] Betsy talks about her new workshop, “Updates from the Field, Coaching Gen Z in an Optimal Sport Experience” - based on the last 5 years of conversations she had with Gen Z athletes, and why it has become the most requested keynote. My guest today is my friend and PPT community favorite, Betsy Butterick! Betsy is a coach and communication specialist with a history of coaching D1-D3 college basketball, and the WNBA. Today, Betsy is opening up about her choice to leave it all behind for the never ending adventure of being her own boss. Betsy works with individuals and teams that are ready to improve. Her work spans the locker room to the boardroom, and is applicable to every area of life. Anytime I get the pleasure of sitting down with The Coaches Coach herself, I leave with renewed motivation and nuggets of wisdom that I take into my own coaching. One thing I admire about Betsy is how she'll do anything to push toward that next level. In this episode, she talks about using her part-time job at an airport to get her business off the ground, and how sitting at a children's hospital helped her practice being uncomfortable. Beyond being one of the best-spoken people I've ever met, Betsy is honest, vulnerable, and relatable. Her successful business didn't happen overnight, and she's not afraid to peel back the curtain. This episode is full of practical wisdom and is super encouraging, especially for all my aspiring mindset coaches out there. In her words, “I'm a normal and average person [...] If I can do it, you can do it!” Follow Betsy: Website: www.betsybutterick.com Instagram: @betsy_thecoachescoach YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/BetsyButterick ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here's a glance at this episode: [0:58] Betsy introduces herself. She was a college golfer, then coached college-level basketball, eventually making her way to coaching in the WNBA. She identifies the exact moment she realized coaching existed outside of sports, which soon brought her to her current career coaching coaches as a communication specialist. [5:27] It was not an easy decision to make the jump from leaving a great coaching job to building a business from the ground up. [9:58] Shared experience and relatability goes so far in coaching, and it's a great way to counter Imposter Syndrome. Betsy shares a tip for aspiring mindset coaches that helped her get her foot in the door. She also introduces her ACT video series. [15:20] Right out of the gate, Betsy wanted to work with the people that she understood the best: Coaches. In her opinion, offering value before you're asked is one of the most valuable things you can do to be successful in the field. [19:25] “Don't measure your success by what you don't know. Put out into the universe what you know is good and of value, and do that consistently.” Lindsey and Betsy discuss the unique challenges with marketing via social media and the importance of staying grounded in what you know and who you're targeting. [24:33] It can be hard to be your own boss and remain confident; Betsy digs into her own relationship with confidence and trusting the process. She opens up about how being a mom has changed her life. [30:27] Lindsey asks the question “How did you suspend the how?” Betsy's answer includes 2 stories that illustrate how she learned to “sit with suffering”. [36:04] After she left coaching, Betsy landed her very first client that she describes as, “The best first client I could have hoped for… because she was so skeptical”. Betsy takes Lindsey through how she landed her first client and took advantage of the right opportunities. [40:37] The HUSTLE is all about getting creative. Betsy talks about how she worked on her skills, made the ask (even when it was intimidating) and even worked part-time at an airport in exchange for flying standby anywhere in the country. [44:13] Betsy jokes about her “beer meeting” and how she's worked on her money mindset. In her words, “People can't accept what you don't offer”. [47:33] “We can criticize ourselves for the things we didn't do, or congratulate ourselves for the risks that we take”. Betsy explains the very real reward of starting a business, pushing through the fear, and seeing it through. [52:18] Wrapping up the episode, Lindsey asks Betsy how people can learn more about her and the good work she does. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts “I love Lindsey's straight forward, realistic approach to motivation and living your best life.”

If I ask you do you fancy making your own coat, what thoughts go through your head? I remember the first time someone suggested that to me and it was way out of my comfort zone.So what about you? Are you thinking - it's easy Jacqui I've already done it - if so, then kudos to you. Or are you thinking - I'd love to do that but it seems way too difficult? Whether you have already made a coat or if it's one of those projects you keep putting off until you are better at sewing then I'm hoping that today's episode is going to dispell any fears and motivate you to give it a try.Like with all garments there are different types of coats and some are definitely more complicated or involved than others. So today I want to talk about a pattern for an unlined coat that I actually made a couple of years ago but that I think can be a great starting point for anyone wanting to have a go without it being overly difficult. The last coat I bought was one that I happened to stumble on when not really looking for a coat in TKMax. I'm not a big shopper and I find clothes shopping a real challenge. So that's why I ended up biting the bullet and making my own. There's lots of great benefits to making your own coats and there is a growing range of great coat patterns out there to choose from.So the pattern I want to talk to you about today is a Butterick pattern from their Lisette range. It's the B6244 and the name on the pattern is draped collar coat and dress. In this episode I share my experience making this coat, some tips if you want to get started and some things I'll change from the lessons I learnt from this make. For the full details, links and resources visit this page: https://sewmuchmorefun.co.uk/post/episode54If you enjoy this episode please add a rating and/or review as it helps others to find us and be sure to share with any friends that love to sew. Also, if you haven't done so already, follow the podcast. Sean: Now I want to hop a little bit forward. So you sold that business and what went through your mind? I mean, you have this pile of cash now and not sure where to go. How long did it take you for you to have - I don't know what you did right after. Did you go on a break vacation with your husband, with your family, or did you want to already look into what's next? What can we do next? Carol: No, I didn't do anything for a while. I mean, I find that business ideas show up in my head and then I start figuring out whether they make sense or not. That second one came because I'd been sewing for my kids. I never known how to sew, but when I started having kids, I thought, I better learn how to sew because it's expensive to buy clothes. Right? And I remember going at the place it happened was I went into the Bitex, which is a huge fabric store in San Francisco, and was talking with several of the salespeople there and mentioned how I'd like to learn how to design my clothes. And I ended up getting a class, talk to a woman there. And slowly I began to build this idea that if I could make I had to make a pattern for myself. Other people must want to do that. Carol: Bitex had this set up where you could become a member of countries internationally with cost you a couple hundred bucks and you could then buy the fabrics that the designer used for the pattern you were making. And I thought, Hmm, I should do this for more than me. And that's kind of how business ideas come to me, just like I didn't like being treated as a tenant, and certainly so I created business to take care of that. I didn't like the idea that I always had to take somebody else's design. I wanted to take my own. And then I created that business; before I ever sold it, I created into a community, a network of people. We ran fashion shows in big restaurants. People modeled the clothes they had made using my patterns and my fabric, which brought more people into my business. And by then, I was in graduate school and soon was teaching at a university. Carol: And that one ended more because I'd figured out how to do it and I was a little bored. And that out of nowhere, well, the fact that I was doing a fashion show and working with Bitex, they talked to the Butterick distributor or whatever they are, who went back and talk to them about what I was doing. And that's how I got approached by them because I was very connected. And I'm always talking about what I'm doing, like you and I right? And I haven't actually talked to this story probably in 30 years, so it's such fun to remember it all. But that led to a door. So another lesson there is keep people informed. Don't worry about they're going to steal your idea. I watch a lot of entrepreneurs get worried. No, tell people what you're doing. Because if you're following something that's coming out of you, nobody can copy it. They may take an idea, but they'll never be able to do what you're doing. Sean: Yeah. Yeah, for sure. 100%. - - - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/leadershipstack Join our community and ask questions here: from.sean.si/discord Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leadershipstack Leadership Stack Merch: https://leadershipstack.com/shop/

What began as just a hobby in Mimi's Los Angeles home in 2012 blossomed into an international brand. She's achieved a daily engagement of more than 3.2 million followers across all social media platforms, 22 million pageviews and 2.2 million unique visitors annually on her blog and courses on DIY. But her love of sewing started long before that.Mimi began sewing when she was twelve, taking apart clothes, and figuring out how to put them back together again. She didn't realize that she was teaching herself the basics of construction and pattern making. Although she was a runaway at 15 and a single mom at 16 living on the streets of L.A., Mimi always knew that she had some sort of purpose in life. Although it was hard to sew while she was homeless, her love of sewing never left her. She eventually got a job in film production, started a sewing blog, created home sewing videos for You Tube, and became a successful and respected entrepreneur. She signed on as a licensee for Simplicity in 2014 and was the first blogger to have her own pattern line. Within a few years, her tenacity and talent led her to the role of VP for the Big Four (McCall, Butterick, Vogue, Simplicity). Mimi shares, in detail, her journey to creating several multi-million-dollar businesses. (2:32 – 22:16)Mimi has consistently been an advocate for creating more sexy and confident patterns for plus-size women, more stylish patterns for men, styles for brown and black women, new sewists and young sewists. She is integrally involved in every aspect of the business, from creating the patterns, to obtaining fabric rights, to merchandising and branding. In addition to her role as a Vice President, her blogs, online classes, and other highly successful ventures, Mimi, along with her friend and fellow sewist, Brittany J. Jones, founded Melanated Fabrics and Creative Center in Atlanta. To add to her list of accomplishments, Mimi has written a book, which will be released next year.Simply put, Mimi's story is a story of hope, fortitude and grit. An important part of her mission in life is to inspire men and women to embrace their power, find their voice and discover their purpose. She attributes much of her success to following her inner voice and being authentic. She believes that if you do what you love, the money will follow. In her words, “It has to be something that's special to you, and something that you would do even if you weren't being paid for it.” The purpose, she says, has to be genuine. (22:24 – 38:55) As you listen to this amazing and engaging podcast, you realize that Mimi's story is not about the struggles, but about the triumphs. The best way to reach her is through Instagram @Mimi G style. The buzzword most often associated with high performing teams is "chemistry". Chemistry is formed through connection, and at the heart of connection is communication. Betsy understands that language is the most powerful tool we possess, and that elevating our communication skills gives us a competitive advantage in any arena. As a former coach with experience in DI, DII, DIII, and the WNBA Betsy utilizes her unique background with individuals ready to improve and teams of all kinds - from the locker room to the boardroom. As a facilitator and educator, people are her passion. In her role as "The Coaches' Coach", Betsy meets individuals where they are and supports the growth that they're looking to make. As a Communication Specialist, Betsy helps organizations improve communication effectiveness while working collaboratively to create positive change at all levels of team. Professional, playful, and with a talent for people-centric design, Betsy offers an experiential approach towards learning and development. A life-long athlete, Betsy grew up playing all sports and was a competitive basketball player (and awful golfer) at the collegiate level. She now spends her time in coastal California cycling, hiking, surfing, practicing yoga, chasing sunsets and in constant pursuit of the perfect breakfast burrito. The Way of Champions Podcast is brought to you by Sports Refund. When kids sign up to play youth sports there are always fees involved. And parents pay those fees so their child can be on the team, not the injury report. That’s why I love Sports Refund, and parents will too. Sports Refund is low-cost sports fee insurance – NOT health insurance, sports fee insurance. So if your child becomes injured or sick and can’t play, you get your fees reimbursed for that lost time, from one game to an entire season. It’s that simple. This product not only saves families wasted fees, it saves injured athletes the stress of feeling like they’re wasting their parents’ money. The fees come back until the player comes back. So they can focus on fully recovering and making a healthy return to the game. Sports Refund has options for individuals and organizations. Ask your club if they offer it, or visit SportsRefund.com/Game to learn more and sign up today. That’s SportsRefund.com/Game. Can’t Play? Don’t Pay. With Sports Refund. Help Support the Podcast! When you click through and make a purchase, SewHere receives a commission at no cost to you. You buy the right stuff and we continue to make AWESOME sewing media- wahoo! Self Sewn Wardrobe Member Susan Low posted this picture in the group a couple of weeks ago: Photo courtesy of Susan Low[/caption] It's a picture of a small section of a tissue pattern from the Kwik Sew brand. The text on the pattern reads: "WHEN CUTTING OR TRACING THE PATTERN PIECES, ALWAYS FOLLOW THE SAME SIZE ON ALL LINES AND PIECES. NEVER CUT BETWEEN SIZES OR "BLEND" SIZES BY CUTTING FROM ONE SIZE TO ANOTHER. Visit www.kwiksew.com/support for more information" Well, did that all cause a stir! In fact, even 2 weeks later, people are still commenting! So many people commented with hilarious sarcasm, and I can't recreate it all here- so go to the Self Sewn Wardrobe Facebook Group and check it out. There was lots of mentions of the sewing police and hopes that one would be forced into "sewing jail" (hours of continuous sewing) if they broke the rules. Of course, there were a few more practical and serious comments along the lines of "If I never blended between sizes, I'd never make clothes that fit". So, can you- should you- always/never/maybe blend between sizes? ----------------------------------------------------- Blending or Grading Between Sizes on a Sewing Pattern ----------------------------------------------------- First off, I believe this warning exists as a COA (cover our ass) for the pattern brand. If you incorrectly blend two sizes together and ruin your $75/yd fabric- they don't want you to come crying to them. Understandable. That's ok- you'll make a test garment ( https://sewhere.com/podcast/sewing-out-loud/test-wish/ ) , won't you? People blend between sizes, because they are one size in one area (say the bust) and another size in another area (say the hips). This is normal. In fact, a lot of pattern companies instruct the user on how to properly grade between their sizes (something this Kwik Sew pattern clearly does not do). So, if you make a t-shirt and decide you need a size Medum in the bust and a size X Large in the hips, you might be tempted to blend between sizes. We would be tempted too. No, we wouldn't be tempted- we'd just do it. There are indeed ways to do blend incorrectly- but let's talk about how to avoid those! ---------------------------------------- Trace Trace Trace Your Sewing Pattern!!! ---------------------------------------- Before we go too far, I'd highly recommend you trace your pattern when blending- don't cut it out. You could be right, you could be wrong- but tracing will make sure that you don't eliminate any important information you might need later- in case you change sizes, want to make the garment for someone else or find out that your adjustment was incorrect or unnecessary. ------------------------------------- Make Sure Your New Seam Lines Line Up ------------------------------------- When you change the shape of a pattern out of the envelope, you need to be cognizant of how the whole thing fits together. Blending between a bust/waist difference on a tank top with two pieces is different than blending between sizes on a princess seam dress with 6-7 pieces that go around the body. -------------------------------- Is Your Pattern Nested Properly? -------------------------------- Some patterns are not nested properly in order to grade them. This may have even been true about the Kwik Sew pattern that Susan posted- but, probably not. Anywho, see if the way the pattern is nested "makes sense" for blending. This means the pattern would grow out from a common point, like the crotch point on a pair of trousers, or the bust level of a shirt. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Check the Vertical Measurements on Your Body and on the Sewing Pattern ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This is actually something you should do all the time, but it's important in this case especially. One SSW member cautioned that blending could result in "disproportionate" pattern pieces. Well, that's kind of the point- right? Our body may be "disproportionate" to the formulae used by the pattern company, and that's why we modify. Heck, that's probably why we're buying a sewing pattern in the first place. I think if you check on the nesting and find that things are grown from a common point, but you need to double check! When you really look at the distance between sizes on a sewing pattern, you'll find them to be subtler than you expected. There are normally about 2 to maybe 4 inches difference between sizes. Divide that by 4 and you get small incremental changes between the 2 sides of front bodice pattern and 2 sides of a back bodice pattern- but we know it makes a difference! The same is true for length. You will find that larger sizes are generally longer. Sometimes people misunderstand this as pattern companies thinking that if people have a larger hip size, they are suddenly taller. There's a little bit of that going on, but we also need to remember that we are not just x and y axes- and if someone has wider hips that another person, they may very likely need a longer rise in a trouser. *Tangents* -The KwikSew.com domain has not been maintained by the new company who now owns Kwik Sew, Vogue, Butterick and McCall's. One commenter spoofed the warning and said "NEVER VISIT THAT DOMAIN, THE SECURITY CERTIFICATE IS OUT OF DATE..." That gave us a good chuckle, but also made me sad that the new brand hadn't maintained the domain. -Speaking of domains- we own a lot of domains. We can't stop coming up for names for things. Do you have a good idea for what "StitchSlapped.com" could be? Let us know- we own it. -Speaking of domains again...we decided to start a podcast and kept brainstorming names until we landed on the PERFECT ONE! "SEWING OUT LOUD"!!! We checked the domain and someone already owned it- luckily it was US! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Our Font of All Sewing Knowledge Barbara laments that the Big Four sewing pattern companies (Vogue, Butterick, McCalls, and Simplicity) aren't what they once were. Has the art and craft of pattern drafting taken a turn for the worse? The Mavens weigh in on what clues to look for to assess how well a pattern might be drafted before you cut your fabric, and talk about their favourite indie pattern alternatives to the Big Four. Inevitably, we find ourselves complaining about taping PDF patterns together, so we explore the emerging practice of using a projector to trace patterns directly onto fabric. Lastly, our Joy Correspondent Hila asks us to imagine what our 'dream sewing life' would look like, and tells us how to help make it happen through mood boards. A note for our listeners: We've chosen to carry on talking about sewing without reference to COVID-19. We hope this provides you with a bit of respite from the harsh realities of the world right now. Stay home, be kind, and stay well.
Hope you are all staying safe, positive, and encouraged during these unprecedented times. We are replaying episode 13 with Betsy Butterick. She is one of my favorite people to listen to. Knitting News, Notes and Events PalKal2016 officially begins on June 15th! Rules: The basic idea is to support a podcaster you listen to or watch by knitting one of their patterns and/or using their yarns for your project. You can also use a project bag or stitch marker by a podcaster! The design, yarn/fiber and/or project bag must be from a knitting/crochet/fiber podcaster. (Not all 3, just one of those to qualify). Spinning also counts, just make sure it’s a finished product. Use the chatter thread for discussion. Make suggestions. There are TONS of podcasts out there and almost no one knows about all of them, so if you know of a podcaster designer/yarnie/bag maker, feel free to share with us! You are encouraged to take advantage of the coupon codes offered by our sponsors, but you are not limited to those podcasters for the KAL. Sponsors and coupon codes are listed in the appropriate threads and will be listed on the podcast as well. Please post finished objects in the non-chatter thread and include a link to the podcaster you are supporting. Enter as many projects as you like! There is no minimum yardage requirement or limit to the projects you can enter. If you use more than one podcaster product/design/bag/etc on one project, you may create multiple entries for that project. For example: Knit the Zigzagular Socks by prairiegirlsusie using yarn by Oh! Loops and use a project bag by thefatsquirrel, you can enter that project into the FO thread 3 separate times, just link to each podcaster seperately in each post. A note about project bags: a project bag may only be entered into the contest one time for an entry. (You can’t just keep using a podcaster project bag over and over and entering the contest that way). The same applies for stitch markers. Wips count! Just finish them between June 15 and September 15, 2016. You must be a member of the Actually Knitting Podcast Group to win. Have fun supporting a podcaster designer or yarnie! Please support as many different podcasts as you can! Please do not chatter in the non-chatter thread. It makes it more difficult to draw a winner! Use the tag PALKAL2016 here on Ravelry and #palkal2016 on Instagram. Feel free to double, triple, quadruple dip! Steve Vladeck joins us to dive further into federal courts and federal rights. After getting Steve’s take on our discussion concerning federal courts of appeals and gay marriage last week with Michael Dorf, we discuss the issues raised by what Steve thinks could be a major new case in the Supreme Court this term: Armstrong v. Exceptional Child Center. How and when can you enforce a federal statute or the Constitution against state officials? Simple question, right? This show’s links: Steve Vladeck’s profile, his writing, his info and posts on the Just Security blog, and his Twitter feed Oral Argument 34: There’s Not Really a Best Font with Matthew Butterick and Oral Argument 11: Big Red Diesel (when Butterick’s Practical Typography was first brought up on the show) Oral Argument 37: Hammer Blow, in which Michael Dorf delivered many lessons in the relationship between state courts and lower federal courts, an issue critical for the current state of gay marriage in the United States Danforth v. Minnesota (deciding that states, as a matter of state law, may apply retroactively new constitutional rules announced by the Supreme Court, even if federal law does not require retroactive application) Bush v. Gore (Rehnquist’s concurring opinion arguing that state courts may not interfere, even through state constitutional judgments, with certain legislatively enacted election laws that interact in advantageous ways with federal law) VOPA v. Stewart Stephen Vladeck, Douglas and the Fate of Ex Parte Young Douglas v. Independent Living Center The Eleventh Amendment: “The judicial power of the United States shall not be construed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or prosecuted against one of the United States by citizens of another state, or by citizens or subjects of any foreign state.” Ex part Young (And note in dissent we find Justice Harlan, the heroic dissenter in Plessy v. Ferguson, sounding the federalist alarm: Allowing private suits in federal courts against state officers for their official actions “would inaugurate a new era in the American judicial system and in the relations of the National and state governments. It would enable the subordinate Federal courts to supervise and control the official action of the States as if they were "dependencies" or provinces.”) The cases Steve cites as leading up to Ex parte Young: Hans v. Louisiana (interpreting the Eleventh Amendment to bar suits arising under federal law against a state not only by citizens of “another state” but also by its own citizens) and Lochner v. New York Adar v. Smith (the Fifth Circuit case to which Steve referred that permitted Louisiana to refuse to add a gay adoptive parent’s name to a birth certificate) Alexander v. Sandoval (marking the end of inferring private causes of action in federal statutes) Gonzaga University v. Doe Lyle Deniston, Opinion Analysis: A Right to Sue Under Medicaid – Maybe Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association v. Houstoun (in which then-Judge Alito notes that while providers may not sue under the Medicaid access requirements “Medicaid recipients plainly satisfy the intended-to-benefit requirement and are thus potential private plaintiffs” under section 1983) SCOTUSblog page for Armstrong v. We discuss the role of design in the practice of law with renowned typographer-lawyer Matthew Butterick. The conversation ranges among very practical tips for making better documents, why so many legal documents are poorly designed, why lawyers should care about design, and what it even means to design a document. Matthew explains why IRS forms are some of the most well-designed legal documents around. Also, Joe manages to connect (positively) enjoying physical books with smelling gasoline. The U.S. News rankings of law schools are out! We wish they would go away. After follow-up on last week’s episode and a dip into viewer mail, we discuss what problems the rankings might be attempts to solve, how they are calculated, and the obvious problems with them. The Spring Break episode in which Joe and Christian take a break from solving the world’s legal problems to talk about the technology and culture of writing. We start with some listener feedback, and then Joe reports on an accidental experiment he performed with his car lights. Moving on to email, we discuss a number of bad habits, including needless attachments and clicking on links. Then, the big daddy: Microsoft Word. We discuss what Christian thinks is horribly wrong with it and the excellent, usable alternative to the whole concept of the WYSIWYG word processor. We argue. We close with Memphis. Christian's spouse conducts various noisy activities in the background. And Darcy barks. Never fear: we'll get back to the law stuff next week. Is that garment you're sewing a shirt or a blouse? Is it the collar stand, or lack thereof that makes you decide one way or another? How about set-in sleeves versus dropped? Maybe it's your choice of fabric.... This month Laurel talks about her experiences creating her No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Shirt, with a Butterick pattern that sometimes says shirt and other times blouse. She also discusses sewing techniques that say shirt, and chats a little about the history of shirts and shirty language (with special attention to a scene from a Harry Potter book ). This podcast is an extension of my on-web sewing life journal Me Encanta Coser, a blog that tells the story of an arty-romantic plain sewist in CA. My blog is written in English. The blogs name, and occasional references, pays tribute to the beautiful Spanish language which is a part of both the history and modern culture of the San Francisco Bay area, where I live.
