What if the biggest summit you ever face isn't a mountain, but it's the life that unfolds when everything around you falls apart, you've hit rock bottom, and wonder if you have the strength to climb back up.My guest, Dianette Wells, has climbed Mount Everest not once, but twice. She's conquered the Seven Summits, crossed deserts on foot, raced across continents, and faced down physical extremes most of us can't imagine.  But her greatest feat?  Rebuilding a life after unimaginable personal loss of her son and finding the courage to keep going when standing still seemed easier.Today, in our gripping and deeply human conversation, Dianette will share how the same mindset that carried her up the world's tallest peaks helped her navigate the emotional terrain of heartbreak, reinvention, and healing after the tragic death of her son.Her memoir, Another Step Up the Mountain, chronicles her journey that will resonate with anyone who has ever hit rock bottom—and wondered if they had the strength to climb back up. Dianette is now on a mission, through her speaking and writing, to inspire others to chase their own “Everest”, whatever the odds.Connect with Dianette:Website: https://dianettewells.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dianettewells/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DianetteWellsEnduranceAthleteLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dianette-wells-32602110/CONNECT WITH DEBIDo you feel stuck?  Do you sense it's time for a change, but are unsure where to start or how to move forward? Schedule a clarity call!Free Clarity Call: https://calendly.com/debironca/free-clarity-callWebsite – https://www.debironca.comInstagram - @debironcaEmail – info@debironca.com Check out my online course!Your Story's Changing, Finding Purpose in Life's Transitionshttps://course.sequoiatransitioncoaching.com/8-week-programThe Family Letter by Debi Ronca – International Best Sellerhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SSJFXBD

Heat stress affects four out of five Americans with many unaware they're experiencing it, and over a quarter don't know how to react in an emergency situation. Lexi Engelbart from Ergodyne joins us to discuss Project Heat, an educational initiative aimed at helping people recognize and respond to heat-related illnesses before they become life-threatening.• Heat stress is highly personal – medications, hydration, alcohol consumption, and fitness level all affect how individuals respond• Signs of heat-related illness progress from heat rash to heat cramps to heat exhaustion to heat stroke, with cognitive decline being a serious warning sign• The "taco method" (Tarp Assisted Cooling Oscillation) can save lives in remote locations by creating a makeshift ice bath• Acclimatization is crucial – gradually expose yourself to heat over 1-2 weeks rather than jumping straight into hot conditions• Cooling products range from evaporative cooling vests and sleeves to phase change technology designed for different environments• Proper cooling not only prevents heat illness but also improves performance by allowing better nutrient absorption• The time-tested formula for heat stress prevention remains "water, rest, and shade"• Looking out for signs of heat stress in friends, family members, and teammates can prevent serious medical emergenciesLearn more about heat stress prevention and products at Ergodyne.com/heat-stress.Here's the products we discussed in the episode that Lexi recommended: Arm SleevesCooling Towel (their most popular item)Dry Condition VestPVA Cooling Wet Vesthttps://www.ergodyne.com/heat-stress Support the show

# 167 - What drives someone to abandon their shoes and run barefoot through mountains, forests, and even snow? In this captivating conversation, Ken Posner reveals the unexpected journey that turned him from a corporate professional with chronic running injuries into a barefoot endurance athlete who's completed thousands of miles without shoes.Ken's transformation began pragmatically – seeking relief from injury and following the principles in Christopher McDougall's "Born to Run." But what started as injury prevention blossomed into a life philosophy. Far from merely a physical adjustment, going barefoot created what Ken calls "the original human mindfulness." When your feet are unprotected, large portions of your brain that normally process worry must instead focus on safely navigating terrain, creating a natural state of presence that's increasingly rare in our hyper-connected world. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as Ken shares his remarkable accomplishment of completing "the grid" – climbing all 35 Catskill peaks every month for a year, totaling 420 ascents. This monumental challenge emerged during a period when his corporate career had plateaued, giving him purpose when he most needed it. Through blizzards, ice, and challenging terrain, Ken discovered that moving slowly through nature was mentally harder than the all-out effort he was accustomed to – a profound lesson for our hurried lives.Drawing inspiration from American transcendentalists like Thoreau and Emerson, Ken articulates how these physical challenges become spiritual pilgrimages that strip away modern preoccupations and reveal our authentic connection to nature. His current goal of climbing 1,000 mountains barefoot (he's at 521) serves as a structured way to "take himself offline" from conventional life and work on his character.Whether you're a committed athlete or someone simply curious about reconnecting with natural movement, Ken's insights will change how you think about the ground beneath your feet. Perhaps the wisdom we seek is already there – if only we're brave enough to feel it.To learn more about Ken and his book, Chasing the Grid, check out his website www.barefootken.com and give him a follow on Instagram @long_brown_path.Want to be a guest on Journey with Jake? In this episode, host Pete Moore reconnects with longtime friend and fellow Emory University alum, Marcus Gordon. They dive into the significant evolution of endurance sports over the years, and the business opportunities surrounding the endurance athlete community. Marcus shares his journey from collegiate athlete and marketing professional to passionate triathlete and entrepreneur—highlighting the explosive growth in triathlons, marathons, and ultra events across the globe. Pete and Marcus chat about the gaps in the market for facilities catering specifically to endurance athletes, the concept behind Marcus's upcoming venture Endurance Ohana, and how advances in tech are transforming training and competition prep. They also touch on the importance of community, the power of simulation-based training, and what makes a truly next-level fitness experience for serious endurance enthusiasts. Marcus pulls back the curtain on his exciting plans for a destination-style facility focused on not just performance, but recovery, community, and the full spectrum of an athlete's needs. On 'viral' indoor cycling tech, Gordon mentions, "You'll be able to ride the entire Ironman Hawaii course on your trainer. And except for the wind on your face and the sun glaring down your back, you get every element of that course in terms of being able to see who's in front of you, who's behind you, the elements of going up a hill, coasting down a hill, and so on. We can bring that environment indoors and people love doing that!" Key themes discussed Endurance sports culture and personal journey Growth and popularity of triathlons/ultras Gaps in facilities for endurance athletes Concept and mission Tech integration in training and recovery Community and togetherness as core values Premium experience: Performance, recovery, and social aspects A few key takeaways:  1. A New Kind of Performance Center: Marcus is launching “Endurance Ohana,” a boutique gym and performance center specifically catering to endurance athletes—everyone from 5K runners to Ironman competitors. While traditional gyms have amenities endurance athletes use, none are truly targeted at this community's unique needs. 2. Community and Experience at the Core: The concept centers on the Hawaiian term “ohana,” meaning family and community, emphasizing a supportive, communal environment. It's not just about physical training, but also bringing together passionate individuals with similar goals in a space specifically designed for collective motivation and support. 3. High-Tech, Multi-Disciplinary Training: The facility will also feature cutting-edge options for swimming, arena-style cycling (with advanced indoor trainers, including options to bring your own bike), running, strength, mobility, and top-tier recovery options like cold plunges and saunas. There's a major focus on integrating tech for tracking and simulating real-world race conditions. 4. Training, Recovery & Content Creation: Beyond just equipment, Ohana will offer full support: Nutrition, recovery, strength, mobility, and even social media and content creation resources. The facility looks to be a true “third place” for athletes, complete with recovery lounges and podcast/video studios. 5. A Premium Membership for a Passionate Community: Expect a high-end experience, with membership hovering in the $300+ per month range. This reflects both the deeply invested target audience (endurance athletes already spending heavily on gear and races) and the all-inclusive nature—training, recovery, storage, and community all under one roof. Unplugging for Performance: Rediscovering Intuition in a Tech-Driven Athletic World

Can technology truly enhance athletic performance, or are athletes becoming overly dependent on data? Join us as we explore how tech overload affects endurance athletes, sometimes hindering performance by drowning them in a sea of metrics. We share personal experiences and introduce Product 28, an initiative urging athletes to unplug, trust their instincts, and focus on the essence of training, much like the precision required in NASCAR, where only a few key metrics really matter. From primitive tracking tools to social media-like community hubs, training platforms like TrainingPeaks and Strava have revolutionized how athletes engage with their routines. We examine the cultural shift they've sparked—where sharing workouts has become as anxiety-inducing as missing them. Strava's evolution, in particular, serves as a fascinating case study of how gamification and social sharing reshape training behaviors, often prioritizing social validation over personal fitness goals. Data paralysis is real, and it's reshaping athletic training. Athletes can find themselves overwhelmed by sleep trackers, HRV graphs, and AI-driven workouts that make decisions for them, leading to outsourced decision-making and a disconnect from their intuition. We recount a personal tale from the 2009 Ironman Coeur d'Alene that underscores the value of listening to one's body over blindly following data. Through this narrative, we highlight the importance of balancing technology with personal insight for a more fulfilling training journey.
