Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Scott Sistek, CASCADE OF HISTORY's official meteorologist - as well as the man behind the Emerald City Weather Blog. We spoke with Scott Sistek late on the evening of Friday, March 13, 2026 in order to create an "instant history" of the "Friday the 13th" snowstorm that struck much of the Puget Sound region earlier in the day. March snow is rare in Seattle and environs, so Scott tells us what happened and why - with an eye to documenting what happened so that future historians might better understand a particular moment in local meteorological history. We also covered the windstorm that took place earlier in the week, and looked ahead to a "heatdome: forecast for California and the American Southwest, and what impact it might have on the Pacific Northwest. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Tom Heuser, Seattle-based Architectural Historian with Willamette Cultural Resources Associates - or WillametteCRA. Under Mr. Heuser's leadership, WillametteCRA in 2024 began offering a service called "Pacific Northwest House Histories" to give homeowners, real estate agents and others interested in the histories of specific homes access to professional historical research - the kinds of services typically offered to larger and more institutional clients in the cultural resources management field, but instead focused the residential sector. CASCADE OF HISTORY spoke with Tom Heuser on March 11, 2026, and he explained how the "House Histories" came to be, shared stories he's uncovered for clients, and explained how the service is structured in three tiers of complexity and expense. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks Jim Providenza, co-author (with the late Mike McLaughlin) of "Life Along The Tracks: Candid Stories From A Career Railroader." The book was published in March 2026 by the Basalt Books imprint of WSU Press in Pullman, Washington. "Life Along The Tracks: Candid Stories From A Career Railroader" is a collection of first-person anecdotes originally written by Mike McLaughlin about his decades working on railroads in the Northwest, the Mountain West and in other parts of the United States. McLaughlin was born in Seattle in the 1930s and passed away in 2012. His friend Jim Providenza made it a labor of love to edit Mike's work, gather photos and commission maps from their mutual friend Dave Clemens. The result is a highly readable, well-illustrated book unlike just about any other recent title devoted to railroad history. The book, originally published in 2003, has just been issued in a new paperback edition. Ralph Barnes was born in Oregon and educated in the Beaver State in the early 20th century. He became a journalist and worked as a newspaper reporter in Europe in the 1930s during the run-up to World War II. Stalin punished Barnes for publishing factual stories that reflected poorly on the Soviet Union, and Hitler banished Barnes from Germany - when Barnes published a prescient story predicting that Germany would eventually attack the Soviet Union. Barnes' career was cut short by the crash in November 1940 of an RAF bomber on which he was a passenger. He was 41 years old. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Cecily Marcus, Director of Collections for the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul, Minnesota. For the past few months, Minneapolis and St. Paul have been the target of the Trump Administration's Department of Homeland Security and what the federal government calls “Operation Metro Surge.” Two American citizens - Renee Good and Alex Pretti - were shot to death by federal agents in Minneapolis in January 2026. Demonstrations have been largely peaceful, but chaotic scenes of raids and riot suppression have been a fixture in the media for those who don't live there. CASCADE OF HISTORY reached out to the Minnesota Historical Society to get a sense of what it's been like to cope with the reality on the streets and in the communities of Minnesota, and to learn how they are responding – from an artifact and collections perspective – during this, to put it mildly, historically significant time. News broke today - February 10, 2026 - that Mr. Robson has passed away at age 91. Robson was the “Voice of the Canucks” on radio and TV from their inaugural NHL season in Vancouver in 1970 until 1999. Years before that, Jim Robson began his radio career as a 17-year-old, calling basketball games in Port Alberni, British Columbia, in the early 1950s. He was even a finalist in 1969 for the role of “play by play man” for the one-season-and-done Seattle Pilots of Major League Baseball. Feliks Banel interviewed Mr. Robson in January 2021 for a look ahead at the Seattle Kraken's expansion season in autumn 2021. Lytle's group is called Citizens for the Protection of Des Moines Historic Resources. The ship is the bark "Windward," and it was once used as a breakwater at the foot of Madison and Marion Streets. When the waterfront tidal area was filled in during the 1880s, the ship was left in place and buried. Many have written about the ship, including long-ago historians Clarence Bagley and C.T. Feliks Banel's guests on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY are Patricia Fels of Friends of Gas Works Park and Barbara Swift of the Gas Works Park Alliance. The City of Seattle Department of Parks & Recreation (SPR) will, this coming Wednesday, January 21, 2026, ask - once again - for permission from the City of Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board (LPB) to make significant changes to the historic towers at Gas Works Park. Gas Works Park is a landmark on the north end of Lake Union, whose design by the late landscape architect Rich Haag is regarded worldwide as an iconic and brilliant re-imagining of a former industrial site. It's also one of Seattle's most beloved public spaces. Because Gas Works Park is a City of Seattle landmark, SPR must seek permission from the LPB to make any changes - in this case, SPR wants remove ladders, walkways and other elements of the iconic towers that SPR deems a safety hazard. SPR appeared previously before the LPB in 2025 to ask permission, and the request was not approved, with LPB members asking for additional information. A staff report issued last week by the City of Seattle - in advance of the January 21, 2026 meeting - recommends that the LPB approve the request. Both Patricia Fels and Barbara Swift disagree with the City of Seattle staff report, and they share their reasons why in this interview. This episode was recorded on Saturday, January 17, 2026. This BONUS ENCORE of CASCADE OF HISTORY was one of our LISTENER FAVORITES in 2025, when Feliks Banel spoke with Lee Reynolds, public affairs officer for the U.S. Army's Center of Military History, the part of the Army that funds and manages Lewis Army Museum at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) near Tacoma. In this interview from Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Mr. Reynolds said that Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll would "any day now" adopt a plan to close Lewis Army Museum and 15 other Army museums. Reynolds responded to questions about the threatened closure, including lack of public process, and the specific criteria that were used in selecting museums for closure. The effort to identify museums for closure or consolidation dates to 2024, Reynolds said, and the closures will save a total of $114 million over the next decade. The total of 16 closures represents about half of the museums funded and operated by the U.S. Army. Reynolds also explained that JBLM officials might choose to create a "heritage center" - with no Army artifacts, but perhaps with replicas of artifacts - once the Army museum is shut down. As of December 31, 2025, no further information has been released by the U.S. Army regarding their plans for the future of the 16 museums which were believed in July to be slated for closure as early as August or September 2025. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, we dig into the archives for an interview with the late Stuart McLean, host of “The Vinyl Café” for CBC Radio in Canada. Feliks Banel interviewed Mr. McLean in the lobby of the Paramount Theatre in Seattle on the afternoon of December 11, 2013. That night, Mr. McLean would present a special holiday touring edition of his radio show to a sold-out theatre packed full of American "Vinyl Café" fans. "The Vinyl Café" is a little hard to describe for those who have never heard it. As part of each broadcast, Stuart McLean would tell long and often humorous stories about a man named Dave who owns the world's smallest "reh-cord" store (and that's how the word is pronounced in parts of Canada). Dave's wife is Morley, and their kids are Sam and Stephanie. Along with the storytelling, "The Vinyl Café" often featured music by Canadian bands. The audio is from the “field tape” or raw recording of an interview shot on video as part of a feature for a local public TV station in Seattle. It's been lightly edited – and the audio quality of the off-mic portion – of Feliks nervously asking questions – is not that great. Stuart McLean passed away in 2017 at age 68. Just a few weeks ago, we featured a 2013 interview with Bryan Johnson about when he was on the radio in Seattle in 1963 breaking the news about the Kennedy assassination. With word of Mr. Johnson's passing, we went back into the archives for this conversation from October 9, 2009. The occasion was his unbelievable 50th anniversary at KOMO Radio and TV in Seattle, which would be officially marked the next day, October 10, 2009. This interview has been lightly edited. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel presents vintage audio – recorded by him by holding his Sanyo tape recorder near the radio speaker on the night of December 8, 1980. Former Beatle John Lennon had been assassinated in New York City. In Seattle, on FM rock station KISW, legendary DJ Steve Slaton was on the air. Within minutes of the news reaching Seattle, he did what live and local radio used to do better than any other medium: he opened up the phone lines. In this long excerpt, we hear what amounts to a master class in how thoughtful, talented and local radio voices worked regularly to subtly build community, by connecting real live people in real-time to something bigger than themselves. Radio used to do this kind of thing every day of the week, and it was especially priceless during times of crisis or heartache. As most people know in 2025, while it has some value, social media can often feel hollow and algorithmic. The humanity is often scrubbed away and re-packaged. In this tape - from a defiantly human era of radio and a particularly heart-wrenching night - we hear a real person, organic and unfiltered and serving a mass audience, and providing that "community glue” that radio, in the right hands, can still do so well. The sound quality is not great, and during pregnant pauses, music from another station can be heard. The content is surprisingly raw, with both Slaton and one of the callers uttering expletives – which have been bleeped out after the fact (those expletives, remarkably, went out over the airwaves on December 8, 1980).
