On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with Randall Adams with an update on the saga of the City of Sumner, Washington - the same city that last week tore down the Ryan House - where city officials had announced a give-away of park benches, many with memorial plaques still attached. Tuesday, July 29, 2025 was bench and plaque give-away day, and Randall Adams was there, bright and early, at Sumner City Hall, wearing his SUMNER SPARTANS t-shirt and vintage SUMNER SPARTANS football helmet - all to make sure that the bench dedicated to his late friend Danny Crook would end up in a good home. Randall Adams shares the story of what happened in this bonus episode. CASCADE OF HISTORY reached out to City of Sumner spokesperson Carmen Palmer late on the afternoon of Thursday, July 24, 2025. She declined a phone interview and offered to try to answer questions via email instead. We also share some of her answers in this episode, too. Feliks Banel's guests on this LIVE REMOTE BROADCAST of CASCADE OF HISTORY from the ruins of the Ryan House in Sumner, Washington include Nick Biermann of Save Ryan House, Nancy Ryan Dressler (descendant of the builder of the Ryan House), Tina Patton Burnett and other grassroots historic preservationists and lovers of local history who have been working for nearly two years to try to save one of the oldest structures in the Evergreen State. It was part vigil, part wake, part celebration of life, and an attempt to process a serious amount of collective grief. The broadcast originated from 1228 Main Street in Sumner, Washington where the historic Ryan House stood for 150 years - until late this past Thursday night when it was demolished by the City of Sumner, against the wishes of one of the most engaged groups of citizens Sumner has seen in decades. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with Randall Adams about the City of Sumner, Washington's surprising plan to give away park benches from the town's Heritage Park, many with memorial plaques still attached. The give-away is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29, 2025. A plaque on one of those free-for-the-taking benches says: In Loving Memory Daniel Stewart Crook Sept. 30, 1955 May 5, 1974 We Lost Someone Very Special Randall Adams knew Danny Crook, and Mr. Adams is upset that the City of Sumner appears to have not made any effort to find Mr. Crook's relatives, who still live in the area. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with Jerry Cornfield of The Washington State Standard for an update about the threatened closure of Lewis Army Museum at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) near Tacoma. There have been a number of developments in the story in the past few days, including a letter sent by U.S. Senator Patty Murray, Democrat of Washington, to Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll. Senator Murray is seeking answers to questions about the threatened closure and has given Secretary Driscoll until August 11, 2025 to respond. U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland, Democrat of Washington's 10th District, which includes JBLM, sent a similar letter on June 30, 2025 giving Secretary Driscoll until August 1, 2025 to respond. Meanwhile, Army Museum Enterprise and Center of Military History public affairs officer Lee Reynolds told CASCADE OF HISTORY on July 18, 2025 that a presentation about the closure initiative will be given to Congress on August 4, 2025. Reynolds declined to answer several questions posed earlier by CASCADE OF HISTORY – seeking specific details about the closure process and the Lewis Army Museum in particular – until after the August 4, 2025 presentation. Reynolds also said that he expects Secretary of the Army Driscoll to sign the closure plan before the end of July. “The approval of the plan and the [AUGUST 4] presentation are not connected," Reynolds wrote in an email. "The approval is working its way through a [HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY] staff review, and we are hoping to have it approved before the end of the month.” For additional information and context, please see these earlier episodes: Interview with Lee Reynolds, Army Museum Enterprise Public Affairs https://soundcloud.com/cascadeofhistory/bonus-episodes-secretary-army Interview wity Erik Flint, retired former director of Lewis Army Museum https://soundcloud.com/cascadeofhistory/bonus-episode-lewis-army-museum CASCADE OF HISTORY is broadcast LIVE most Sunday nights at 8pm Pacific Time via SPACE 101.1 FM in Seattle and gallantly streams everywhere via space101fm.org. It's time for one more BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY devoted to the Claquato Church in Lewis County, Washington. On this episode, Feliks Banel speaks once again with Lewis County Commissioner Lindsey Pollock about the process to find a buyer, via sealed bid auction, for Claquato Church - a process which Lewis County now all but admits is tilted toward the private, non-profit Claquato Cemetery. The cemetery has had months (or perhaps even years) to ready a proposal, while other potential buyers only learned of the opportunity on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 and have until July 31, 2025 to prepare and submit something. At one point in this interview, Feliks Banel says to Commissioner Pollock, "It seems like that opportunity [of bidding on Claquato Church] should have been offered to everybody in the same time frame, with the same amount of time to prepare a decent proposal." To this statement, Commissioner Pollock responds: "I would agree with that." Lewis County newspaper The Chronicle, whose Brian Mittge broke the news of Claquato Cemetery's involvement in the behind-the-scenes process in a social media post on Wednesday, published a detailed piece on the paper's website Friday, July 18, 2025: LINK: https://www.chronline.com/stories/a-plan-to-restore-historic-claquato-church,384204 CASCADE OF HISTORY is broadcast LIVE most Sunday nights at 8pm Pacific Time via SPACE 101.1 FM in Seattle and gallantly streams everywhere via space101fm.org. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel digs deeper into the controversy brewing in Lewis County, WA where a decision by the Board of County Commissioners - with little or no public input to sell a historic building with a two-week bidding process - has caught many residents off guard, and upset some who care about history and historic preservation. The Claquato Church in Lewis County, Washington was built in 1858 and is one of the oldest structures in the Evergreen State. Lewis County Commissioners approved a plan on July 15, 2025 to auction it off as surplus property; the deadline for bids is July 31, 2025. Criteria for the winning bid is described as "highest and best" - as far as who can guarantee preservation of the building - but the process and the way it's described in official documents strikes some as a little unclear. In this episode, we hear public comment from the Board of Commissioners meeting of July 15, 2025 when the plan was adopted; we speak with Lewis County Commissioner Lindsey Pollock in an interview from July 16, 2025; and another interview from later the same day with descendant of the original church builder, Marla LeFevre. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with Lee Reynolds, public affairs officer for the U.S. Army's Center of Military History, the part of the Army that funds and manages Lewis Army Museum at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) near Tacoma. In this interview from Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Mr. Reynolds confirms that Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll will "any day now" adopt a plan to close Lewis Army Museum and 15 other Army museums. Reynolds responds to questions about the closure, including lack of public process, and the specific criteria that were used in selecting museums for closure. The effort to identify museums for closure or consolidation dates to 2024, Reynolds says, and the closures will save a total of $114 million over the next decade. The total of 16 closures represents about half of the museums funded and operated by the U.S. Army. Reynolds also explains that JBLM officials might choose to create a "heritage center" once the Army museum is shut down. On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, we present audio from a live reading of the Declaration of Independence held at the old MOHAI - Museum of History & Industry - in Seattle's Montlake neighborhood. When an original printing of the Declaration of Independence visited Seattle in August 2003, it was displayed for 11 days at MOHAI. The document was here as part of a national tour organized by Norman Lear, the TV producer who had purchased what's known as a “Dunlap broadside.” MOHAI presented a live reading of the Declaration of Independence with a cast of local current and former elected officials – with then-Evening Magazine host (and future Sammamish City Councilmember) John Curley as emcee. Among the voices reading the Declaration are late former Governor John Spellman, late former Seattle Mayor Gordon Clinton, late former Seattle Mayor Paul Schell, Seattle's then-Mayor Greg Nickels, Washington's then-Secretary of State Sam Reed, future Attorney General Rob McKenna, future King County Executive Dow Constantine, and other well-known figures. Feliks Banel's guests on this LIVE REMOTE BROADCAST of CASCADE OF HISTORY from the farewell event for Seattle High School Memorial Stadium include Clay Eals and Jean Sherrard of the Seattle Times' Seattle Now & Then; Northwest sports historian and collector David Eskenazi; and music historian Eric Magnuson. The 1947 stadium, deemed unworthy of landmark status, will soon be demolished and a shiny new stadium built in its place. The structure, designed by noted architect George Stoddard, was dedicated in 1947 to the memory of 800+ Seattle Public Schools alums who died in World War II. Apart from bidding farewell to the doomed (not "domed") stadium, discussion also included the recent passing of Bobby Sherman, who played Jeremy Bolt on "Here Come The Brides" - the 1969-1971 TV series set in 1860s Seattle, which also spawned the song, "(The Bluest Skies You've Ever Seen Are In) Seattle." Tell us.” - asking for input about local places and products that tend to serve locals as well as tourists. The resulting piece, which will be something of an "unconventional visitor's guide," will be published in the magazine in the Sunday Seattle Times on August 3, 2025. The City of Seattle and Seattle Public Schools are inviting the public to say goodbye to Seattle High School Memorial Stadium this Thursday, June 26, 2025 from 4pm to 7pm. Memorial Stadium – built in 1947 - was deemed to be not worthy of landmark status in Seattle and will be demolished, while the 1951 wall engraved with names of Seattle Public Schools' WWII war dead was given landmark status and will be preserved. With the stadium's imminent destruction prior to construction of a new facility, Feliks Banel's focus on this BONUS ENCORE EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is what's often called the "anti-nomination" process for potential landmarks. These "anti-nominations" are reviewed by the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods' Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board, and this unofficial term applies when a building's owner does NOT want the building designated as a city landmark. Consultants and attorneys join in a process that probably runs counter to how many people believe historic preservation programs should operate in the United States. On Wednesday, October 4, 2023 the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board voted to designate only the 1951 memorial wall at Memorial Stadium as a city landmark, and to not designate 1947 Memorial Stadium. Through audio from the meeting and excerpts from email correspondence, we use Memorial Stadium as a case study to show how public resources are being devoted to processes that appear to be lacking some key elements of what might be called good government.
