His research shows this is true across industries and geographies, and he offers advice on how to improve in each area. He's author of the book Inspire: The Universal Path for Leading Yourself and Others as well as the HBR article “What Sets Inspirational Leaders Apart”.

Adam Galinsky: Inspire Adam Galinsky is the Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Paul Calello Professor of Leadership and Ethics at the Columbia Business School. He co-authored the book Friend & Foe and his TED talk, How to Speak Up for Yourself, is one of the most popular of all time with over 7 million views. He's the author of Inspire: The Universal Path for Leading Yourself and Others. Leaders can delegate many things, but vision is not one of them. Most every leader needs to be able to articulate the future. In this conversation, Adam and I explore the building blocks to get better at inspiring others. Key Points Every leader has the potential to be inspiring. We can choose to get better. Whatever a leader says, either positive or negative, will be amplified. When values are brought front and center, they inspire behavior that creates a better future. Inspiring leaders offer a big picture, optimistic view of the future. Make visions simple and vivid. Simplicity is the key to inception. Use strong imagery that brings details to life. Repetition is essential for a vision to take hold. The more often we hear something, to more likely it becomes our own truth. Have you ever felt unsure about your leadership instincts? Do you question your decisions because they don't align with traditional expectations? In this episode of Leadership is Feminine, Kris Plachy dives into the challenges women face when self-doubt creeps in and disrupts their confidence as leaders. She examines why so many women, despite their success, find it difficult to trust their intuition, especially when navigating the complexities of leading a team. Kris highlights a powerful truth: “The common theme of the women that I work with has nothing to do with skill or ability, but has everything to do with what I would call learned self-doubt.” Through this lens, she explores how conditioning erodes confidence and teaches women to second-guess their instincts, even when they have proven their capabilities time and time again. Kris emphasizes the importance of breaking these cycles by embracing self-belief and standing firm in your vision—even when it feels isolating or unconventional. She redefines leadership as an act of nurturing accountability, showing that feminine leadership is not about pleasing others but about setting clear boundaries and holding people—including yourself—accountable to their commitments. If you've ever questioned whether you're “doing it wrong” simply because you're doing it differently, this episode offers validation, empowerment, and actionable insights to reclaim your confidence as a leader. Join Kris to discover how embracing your instincts and breaking old cycles can not only transform your leadership but inspire others to do the same. Identifying and nurturing leadership potential is more critical than ever in today's diverse and dynamic workplace. Bias in the selection process can undermine efforts to build an inclusive environment, potentially perpetuating systemic inequities and hindering diverse perspectives. This issue becomes particularly pressing when selecting leaders, whose influence shapes organizational culture and performance. To address this challenge, it is essential to adopt strategies that mitigate bias and ensure fair evaluation of leadership potential.  Dr. Kimberly Janson is CEO of Janson Associates, a talent and organizational development company, and was named a Top 10 Thought Leader, Top 10 Executive Coach in 2021, and Top 10 Inspirational Leader in 2022.  Dr. Melody Rawlings is a business professor, doctoral chair, and director of the Center for the Advancement of Virtual Organizations at Northcentral University.  Their new book is: Determining Leadership Potential: Powerful Insights to Winning at the Talent Game. In this episode, Kimberly and Melody explore the keys to assessing leadership potential, focusing on methods to uncover and mitigate bias during the selection process. By leveraging objective criteria, structured assessments, and insightful questioning, organizations can better identify and promote leaders who are both competent and high-potential leaders.    What you will learn from this episode:  Identify the three challenges of determining leadership potential. Discover why assessments play a crucial role in identifying leadership potential and explore the valuable assessment resources available. Uncover the key predictors of leadership potential and learn why job performance doesn't indicate good leadership.   "This is honestly where a number of women get limited in terms of their trajectory, the problem is that performance is the most commonly used indicator of potential. It's just a mistake." - Kimberly Janson   Valuable Free Resource:  To the first five people who go on the website and complete the contact form, you get this book for FREE! A: If not you, then who is going to change it? If you think it might be you then figure out what you need to do in order to create this change.   Key Takeaways: "90 plus percent of folks in all three studies relied on observation as indicators of their criteria. But the reality is people aren't trained behaviorists." - Kimberly Janson "Someone who is really negative, or caustic, or extremely conservative, or very self-promoting; takes credit for themselves, so detail-oriented that they can't elevate to see the bigger picture. If you have those in extreme, you are limited in your leadership impact." - Kimberly Janson "You absolutely can learn capabilities that help you look for things that tell of high intelligence or no derailing personality characteristics." - Kimberly Janson "But you are most successful when you have a multi-trait, multi-method assessment process of which observation is one and then balanced with other resources to help you with that." - Kimberly Janson "Performance isn't a predictor, because what you have at this job, at this level, is different from what you need at this next level." - Kimberly Janson "One thing that was obvious was because of all these variations, it's clear why so many people are mismatched and are in leadership roles when they shouldn't be." - Melody Rawlings "If those who are selecting the leaders are not trained, or do not have the skillset to, or framework, to be assessing leadership skills, then how can they place the right people?" - Melody Rawlings   Ways to Connect with Kim Janson and Melody Rawlings: Website: https://www.determiningleadershippotential.com   Ways to Connect with Sarah E. He led the strategy that propelled his father's book, Dr. Stephen R. Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, to become one of the two most influential business books of the 20th Century, according to CEO Magazine. He's the author The Speed of Trust and more recently Trust & Inspire: How Truly Great Leaders Unleash Greatness in Others*. Despite everything we know about good leadership, a lot of places still operate in a command and control mindset. In this conversation, Stephen and I explore the key ways to shift from command and control to trust and inspire. Key Points In spite of all progress, most leaders today are still operating from a command and control mindset. The carrot and stick approach still dominates most organizational cultures and tactics. The biggest barrier to becoming a Trust & Inspire leader is when we think we already are one. People are whole people. The best leaders care for the body, heart, mind, and spirit. There is enough for everyone. Trust & Inspire leaders elevate caring above competition. Enduring influence is created from the inside out. The job of the leader is to go first. All people have greatness inside them. Trust & Inspire leaders work to unleash potential, not control it. Guest Dr. Oleg Konovalov is named among the top eight global experts in leadership and shortlisted for the Distinguished Award in Leadership by Thinkers50. He is the #1 Global Leading Coach named one of the Global 100 Inspirational Leaders 2022, along with Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Oprah Winfrey. Having been named ‘the da Vinci of Visionary Leadership' by many leading authorities of our time, Oleg is considered #1 in the world in the field of vision and visionary leadership. He is the author of The Fisherman's Path to Leadership, The Vision Code, Leaderology, and other books. My co-host, Rich Gassen, works as a print shop supervisor at UW-Madison, where he focuses on empowerment, creativity, and process improvements with staff. He also chairs the Campus Supervisors Network (CSN), a community of practice at the UW supporting supervisors in their roles by offering training and networking events, a weekly newsletter, and a website. Rich is an avid reader, sharer, and practitioner of leadership. Summary Oleg Konovalov, an expert in vision leadership, shares his insights on cultivating curiosity and leadership. He distinguishes between two types of curiosity: "curiosity to know" and "curiosity to explore." The latter is more valuable, as it allows leaders to go beyond surface-level information and develop practical solutions to complex problems. Oleg emphasizes the importance of vision, which he sees as a space in the future defined by the value we create for people, rather than just lofty goals or wishes. He stresses that true leaders must be able to read "weak signals" and explore their own limits to better serve their people. Oleg also discusses the role of peace, connectedness, and love in effective leadership, arguing that leaders must be at peace with themselves and their people to unlock their full potential. Overall, Oleg's perspective highlights the need for leaders to move beyond ego-driven strategies and cultivate a heart-centered, exploratory approach to guiding their organizations into the future. Three Major Ideas: The need to distinguish between "curiosity to know" and "curiosity to explore" The importance of vision as a space in the future defined by value creation, not just goals The role of peace, connectedness, and love in effective leadership Oleg uses an extended analogy between fishing and leadership throughout the conversation. Here are the key elements of the fishing analogy that Oleg draws: Reading Weak Signals: Oleg compares effective leadership to fishing, where leaders need to be skilled at reading "weak signals" - the subtle cues and indicators that aren't immediately obvious, similar to how a skilled fisherman can detect the presence of fish in the water even when they can't be directly seen. Adaptability and Handling Changing Conditions: Just as a fisherman must constantly adapt their techniques and lures based on changing weather, water conditions, and fish behavior, Oleg says effective leaders must be able to nimbly adapt to fast-changing realities and challenges. The Journey, Not the Destination: Oleg likens leadership to a journey or "path" rather than reaching a final "finish line" or destination. Like fishing is an ongoing activity without a clear endpoint, Oleg emphasizes that leadership is a continuous process of growth, exploration and adapting to new circumstances. Revealing Greatness: Oleg states that the role of a leader is to "reveal the greatness" in their people, similar to how a skilled fisherman can bring out the full potential of the fish they are trying to catch. In this episode, which is the 30th in David´s CALM leadership series he outlines 9 steps anyone can follow to become an inspirational leader. To get people into an environment where they can develop, grow, and achieve common goals. According to a large study conducted by Harvard Business School, the ability to inspire is the single thing that creates the highest levels of engagement, and productivity in people. So, listening to this episode and applying what you learn is bound to pay dividends. KEY TAKEAWAYS Leadership is about the ability to inspire others. Leadership starts with your leading yourself wisely. Doing so enables you to learn how to lead others and become a role model they can use to become leaders too. You need to have integrity and be authentic. Leaders are not mindlessly optimistic, but they do remain positive by reminding themselves that they can navigate through any situation. David shares an exercise you can do to glean knowledge from the leaders who have inspired you. Examine your leadership qualities. David explains how in the episode. Commit to maintaining the qualities you already have and improve those that you are not good at. BEST MOMENTS ‘Leadership is about motivating people to change to grow, and to achieve common goals.' ‘Inspirational leaders are able to maintain a positive attitude even when times are tough.' ‘Score yourself out of those character qualities.' ‘How you see yourself is not necessarily always how you are perceived.'   EPISODE RESOURCES John C Maxwell - https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/John-C.-Maxwell/author/B001H6NROC Lao Tzu - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laozi ABOUT THE SHOW People with purpose make a difference. Imagine a world where more people can just get their purpose out of them, into a plan and then actually make it happen. What a world that would be - People everywhere finding meaning and harnessing that to bring inspiration and energy to each and every day, changing lives for the better. But no one ever achieved anything on their own - we all have something unique to bring and that means we all have to play our part - if we want to go far, we have to go together and lead or serve towards a vision of the world we want to see. Everyone has a story to tell, and this show is where these stories come to life. ABOUT THE HOST David Roberts is a highly regarded CEO, mentor, and investor with 30 years of experience across multiple sectors. As an intrapreneur and entrepreneur, David has bought, grown, started and sold several businesses, working with values-driven start-ups, award-winning SMEs, and multinational corporations on strategies for service excellence, leadership, and profitable growth. Relationships matter. They are finite, and you need to take advantage of them in a good way for as long as they're offered to you. - Jim MacPhee Jim MacPhee is a former executive leader with Disney who joins to share some of his lessons on becoming an inspirational leader throughout his 43 year career. His experiences range from starting as a boat driver and retiring as the COO/Senior Vice President of Walt Disney World. We spend a lot of time discussing the impact of building relationships and creating positive experiences. He emphasizes the fact that effective leaders make people feel valued. Throughout his career at Disney, Jim discovered that true engagement involves looking people in the eye, asking about their lives, and listening to their responses. He believes that caring leadership fueled by authentic engagement can turn average performances into extraordinary ones. Making emotional connections and making people feel valued contribute to the overall success and reputation of an organization. This is echoed in Jim's philosophy of inspirational leadership, which is rooted in engaging, inspiring, and leading others. True engagement involves making eye contact, smiling, and showing appreciation to everyone in the organization. He shares how he made people feel valued throughout his career. I love when he says that the true measure of an experience is how an organization or individual makes someone feel. This is also why he encourages leaders to spend time engaging with frontline employees. They often hold valuable insights and play a crucial role in shaping the customer experience. This episode is a wonderful conversation with valuable insights around improving leadership skills and enhancing customer and employee engagement. On this episode I share the unforgettable community collaboration group hikes that we hosted during the month of May 2023. I felt compelled to do a solo episode as it was quite the action packed month filled with many full circle moments. I had the opportunity to co-host a group hike to Sandstone Peak with the outdoor writing legend Casey Schreiner (Founder of Modern Hiker), a 4 peak challenge in the San Gabriel Mountains with beloved hiking groups LA Trail Killers, OutAdv+, and SweatSoGuud, a #WeHikeToHeal sunset trek to Echo Mountain with the powerful spirit Karla Amador (Founder of the 52 Hike Challenge), and even had a collaboration with the Spotify for Podcasters team around the topic of community building. Co-hosting these adventures with some of the most inspiring leaders in the outdoor community was powerful & impactful and what makes it all extra special is that each individual was a previous podcast guest on this very show.
